Upon its much hyped debut in 2019, Recess was dubbed by the press as “the Lacroix of CBD.” Founder and CEO Ben Witte has always preferred a different tagline: “the Red Bull of relaxation.” CBD was the fuel for Recess' hot start, but when the beverage industry cooled on the cannabinoid — the result of a challenging regulatory environment — the company turned to another trendy ingredient: magnesium. In 2021, Recess introduced Recess Mood, a new line of sparkling waters infused with magnesium and adaptogens and marketed as modern relaxation beverages. Leading with the tagline of “calm, cool, collected,” the products have become the primary driver of sales of the brand and represent the vision that founder and CEO Ben Witte says he always had for Recess: a platform of beverages intended to help people relax. The company later added Mood powders to the mix, and in 2022 launched a line of zero-proof mocktails that Ben describes as a natural extension of the brand. Recess has emerged from the pivot as a prime-time player that is sold in over 18,000 stores nationally and is one of the best-selling beverage brands on Amazon. It is mentioned and merchandised alongside the likes of high-profile drinks like Olipop, Poppi and Liquid Death. In this episode, Ben talks about how he navigated a shift toward a product mix that realizes his vision of a relaxation beverage platform, how Recess built a thriving online business, how the company utilizes consumer feedback to support its sales and marketing efforts and why it is preparing for a major expansion in brick-and-mortar retail. Show notes: 0:35: Ben Witte, Founder & CEO, Recess – Taste Radio editor Ray Latif recalls his first interview with Ben and the hype around Recess' launch in 2019, before the entrepreneur talks about his reasoning for developing a brand focused on relaxation and how the timing of Recess' launch benefited the brand. He also discusses the strategy of building a digitally native omni channel brand, how a quote from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos helped him realize the importance of patience, and how he identified magnesium as an anchor ingredient for Recess. Ben also explains how the rise of non-alcoholic beer has helped the development of Recess' zero-proof cocktails, how consumers' interactions with consumers has evolved and the brand's communication has changed and how brick-and-mortar success is tied to online advertising. Brands in this episode: Recess, Olipop, Poppi, Liquid Death, White Claw, Athletic Brewing, High Noon, Cutwater, Topo Chico, Kin, Ghia

Later we get to the main attraction of trying out some premade Moscow mules in a can. There is a house in La Jolla that is almost entirely food. It overlooks Black's Beach. It is a very, very nice house. Walk its grounds, and you come across blueberries and strawberries and cabbage and habañeros and herbs and goats and bees and chickens and greenhouses. What was once a tennis court on the grounds has been filled in with more food growing. It is a house-farm, an Eden on the sea cliff, and it's become an epicenter of San Diego's food scene. It's owned by Michelle Lerach and her husband, Bill. Michelle took a sabbatical during law school to live and work on a goat farm in Northern California. There, she saw how connected farmers and ranchers and makers were to restaurants, grocers, distributors, lawmakers (who endorse public spending on agriculture), media, etc. She wanted to bring that to San Diego. She wanted to bring them all to the same plot of land (or house, in this case) to start fostering good, local foodways. So she opened her home—affectionately called the Castle of Chaos—to all of them. Any given day, you'll see local chefs and winemakers and farmers strolling around her home, inspecting things, cooking things, or just kicking up their feet. During the shutdown part of the pandemic, she turned her front driveway into a market to help farmers move product. Food from her home is featured at some of the city's top restaurants. She started the Berry Good Night, which was an annual dinner where she'd invite thought leaders on food and environmental stewardship. It also invited some of her very high-profile and influential friends who could, upon meeting farmers and food people, either financially support their work or advocate for them in legislation. In 2015, that night evolved into Berry Good Food Foundation, which operates workshops on all sorts of responsible, good-stewardship food initiatives (seafood, soil health, food waste, food justice, etc.) and supports gardens at elementary schools on both sides of the border (they've donated $50K to 23 schools so far). She also gathers some of the biggest brains in the country for discussions on UCTV (which have over 14 million views). Finally, she was one of the executive producers (along with Giselle Bündchen, and others) on the film, Kiss the Ground, a documentary about regenerative farming. It was produced by Ryalnd Englehart (whose family owns Cafe Gratitude and Gracias Madre), narrated by Woody Harrelson, and included cameos from Ian Somerhalder, Tom Brady, and a couple songs from fellow San Diegan and farmer/food activist, Jason Mraz. That's a lot, I know. Basically, she's used her law degree and connections to move the city's food scene forward in fairly massive ways. “At the end of the day, we just want to story connect and foster an inclusive, equitable, regenerative good system in San Diego,” she says. She's our guest on this week's podcast. Specifically, she's trying to raise awareness for regenerative farming and Kiss the Ground (the organization that's also co-founded by Englehart). An upcoming dinner on Nov. 19—with chef Flor Franco and David Castro of iconic Valle de Guadalupe restaurant, Fauna—will advocate for regenerative farming being a bigger part of the U.S. Farm Bill. We talk about regenerative farming: what it is, how it works, why it's important. A fascinating talk. For “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” David rediscovers his love for Puesto and raves about their secret weapon—brewer Doug Hasker (try the Clara); Michelle says nothing beats the simple side dish of carrots at Callie; and Troy is genuinely, genuinely impressed by the new food at Cutwater's tasting room, especially the hoagie.

First we play a game, can you name the TV show and Character that spoke these phases catch-phrases? We then move over into the realm of experimentation, but not the kind we did in the high school science lab, instead we talk about trying out new ideas at work, or trying new approaches with our friends and family. This week's canned inspiration comes from Cutwater called Man-Go-Rita. We want your recommendations! What is your favorite canned beverage? We‘d love to have a taste and feature it on a future episode. Any additional suggestions, questions, or corrections you may have, we want to hear those as well! Make it personal! No half stars, we commit and stand by the full level we award. 5-Star: We love it so much, we rave about it to anyone who will listen, and actively hand them out to friends and family to try! 4-Star: We really like it, will proactively get more, and will keep some on hand to enjoy at our next social gathering. 3-Star: It's good, we like it, and equate it to our standard weekend selection. We won't go out of our way to acquire more, but will certainly have it again should the situation arise. 2-Star: It's not great. We will finish this can, but will part ways after, and will likely not meet again in the future. 1-Star: It's terrible. We won't be finishing the can, and will need another, better can, to wash the awful taste out of our mouths. 0-Star: It's so bad, it caused a visceral reaction that made us physically reject it's contents.
The Follycast Episode 13: Monday, Monday and Amongst Our Weapons preview In this month’s episode… We make our first foray into the world of the Rivers Of London graphic novels with the recently released ‘Sunday Sunday’. We have a wider discussion about the graphic novels released so far and we wonder what implications the revelations in Monday, Monday have for the (at time of recording) soon to be released new novel ‘Amongst Our Weapons’. Now that the back cover ‘blurb’ has been released, what are our hopes and predictions for the ninth book in the Rivers series? Along the way we discuss whether ‘Monday, Monday’ actually reveals quite as much as it seems to and the role the graphic novels play in the Rivers universe. Suffice it to say our opinions vary considerably. Along the way Jennie gets angry, Margaret does some name etymology and we generate the most extensive show notes so far. Whether you have read ‘Monday, Monday,’ or are wondering whether the graphic novels are really for you, this is the podcast for you. Club Dread—Broken Lizard's follow up to Super Troopers—is a riff on 80s slasher films; and it boasts a cast of characters that are eclectic, dumb, horny, and ripe for the picking. This, of course, is anchored by the Broken Lizard crew. There's Dave, the drug-addled DJ (Paul Soter); Putnam, the buttoned-up tennis coach (Jay Chandrasekhar); Sam, the chief of the Fun Police (Erik Stolhanske); Lars, the smooth-operating new masseuse (Kevin Heffernan); and Juan, the promiscuous dive coach (Steve Lemme). Their characters here are wildly different from their respective turns in Troopers, and not all are created equal. There are a few swings and misses in the bunch. That is entirely forgiven, though, by the presence of Bill Paxton as "Coconut" Pete. Paxton's Pete—a Jimmy Buffet-esque singer living out his days on his hedonistic vacation island—is just a treasure. The character is wonderfully realized. From album covers, to candid photos, to actual songs, the work the Broken Lizard crew put into crafting Pete is incredible. His vinyl greatest hits is actually available for purchase (I may or may not have bought it). That performance owns the film and is probably responsible for why it's now a cult classic. Its need for that status is actually surprising. Despite the massive popularity of Troopers, Club Dread fell flat on its face at the box office. On a budget of $8 million, it earned just $7.6 million. It was also diced up by critics. With 101 reviews, it sits at 29% on Rotten Tomatoes. To hell with them, this movie is a bloody good time; so sit back, slug down one of Cutwater's Pina Coladas, and don't ask "Coconut" Pete to play Margaritaville! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, Capt. Cash, and Mayor McCheese are never gonna lose those tails! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – How does Broken Lizard's sophomore effort fare? The Follycast Episode 12: False Value In this month’s episode… We reach the end of our quest (for the time being) as we review the most recent Rivers Of London novel, False Value, published in 2020, just before the pandemic turned the world upside down and gave us all the time to do this podcast. False Value is a tale that links Silicon Valley, Ada Lovelace and the New York Public Library, but does it have too many characters to keep track of? Is the order of the early chapters intriguing or confusing? How many different Hitchhiker’s Guide references are there? Could Nightingale be about to retire? Most importantly of all, when will the official Molly Cookbook be published? Having debated these questions we end with some speculation about where the series could be headed next. Hopefully our next episode will review the next Rivers Of London book as and when it is written and published! In this month's podcast with the beer gurus at Katcef Brothers we say goodbye to summer but welcome fall with open arms! The Buy A Family A Meal program was a resounding success with 15,000 meals provided to local families in need. But with fall, comes football and you want to be sure to catch the Bud Light brigade at any of the home Navy Football games beginning this Saturday vs Marshall and next weekend against Air Force! Into some wine? 101 North will be poured at Maryland Hall's Arts Alive on September 10th. And Cutwater beverages will flow at the Cutwarter Event at City Dock in Annapolis also on September 10th where Cutwater Yachts is bringing in the boats to sip Cutwater spirits. Live music and a lot of fun brought to you by Oasis Marinas and Snag A Slip. And of course, Bill Catron and Jack Glover spilled the beans on the craft beers and the ready-to-drinks that will be hitting the shelf soon. We questioned the Toasted Marshmallow and Honey Pear flavored seltzers and we all agreed they were questionable. But look for the pumpkin spice seltzer to be a hit! And with the Labor Day Holiday, we discuss safely and responsibly ushering out summer! It was fun. As always! Have a listen!

The Follycast Episode 11: What Abigail Did That Summer In this month’s episode… We conclude our look at the three Rivers Of London novellas by Ben Aaronovitch that have been published so far, with the (at time of recording) recently published What Abigail Did That Summer. With Peter and Beverly away in Herefordshire investigating unicorn-related child adbuctions, Abigail has adventures on and around Hampstead Heath, assisted by her friend Simon and a band of talking foxes. Of the three novellas this generates the most debate on the pod. Do these novellas set during earlier gaps in the Rivers timeline lack a sense of jeopardy? How successful is Ben Aaronovitch writing as a teenage girl? How many cheese puffs out of five will we give it? Next episode we come bang up to date with the most recent main novel, False Value. The Follycast Episode 10: The October Man In this month’s episode… We continue our three part look at the Rivers Of London novellas by Ben Aaronovitch that have been published so far, with The October Man. For the first time in the podcast we leave Peter, The Folly and London behind as we investigate uncanny events in Trier, Germany with a new team. We also discuss the nature of spin-offs more generally and are actually surprised in hindsight at how many new things we learn about the rules of the Rivers universe. Some have direct implications for the unfolding story in London, particularly the nature of River Gods and their offspring. As a result, we totally forget to ask the most obvious question: who is the October Man? Next episode: What Abigail Did That Summer. Welcome back to Happy Half Hour! We have a special treat for our listeners this week: Joining us on the show is Wil Myers! The San Diego Padres are the most exciting team to watch in Major League Baseball right now, and they just made history last week with their first no-hitter. Wil has been a familiar face in the Petco Park outfield since he joined the team in 2013. On April 10, 2017, he hit for the cycle against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field—it was only the second cycle in Padres history—and on August 18, 2020, he hit a grand slam in a 6–4 win against the Texas Rangers, which extended the Padres grand slam streak to two games. Two days later, the Padres would make history as the first Major League team to hit a grand slam in four consecutive games. Wil joined us while on the road in Texas to talk about the new partnership between the Padres and Cutwater Spirits. Cutwater just launched new limited-edition cocktails whose can designs are inspired by the Padres' uniforms: There’s a vodka mule with ginger, a splash of bitters, and lime; and a new paloma with Cutwater’s tequila and grapefruit soda. Wil teamed up with the distillery to promote the new line (he says the vodka mule is his favorite) and participated in the company’s Cut Out for Baseball campaign. Wil shares with us how this season feels compared to 2015, the excitement of signing Fernando Tatís Jr., and the new high expectations for the team. He says this World Series chatter is new for him, so the pressure is on—but that’s a positive thing! Wil also talks about pregame food rituals, why he doesn’t wear batting gloves, and what city is his favorite to eat in. And yes, we asked the burning question about why he agreed to switch jersey numbers with pitcher Blake Snell. Tune in to hear what he says! During this episode, we learned that the Padres have dedicated chefs at the clubhouse in Petco Park, and they can order food through an app. Although professional athletes have regimented diets and work with nutritionists, Wil says the chefs at Petco make amazing Philly cheesesteaks and quesadillas—which is what he orders when he’s able to indulge. His love for Chick-Fil-A is well known, and he says another one of his favorites is Lolita’s Mexican Food: He orders the California burrito and doesn’t add anything else to it because it’s perfect as is. In Hot Plates, Junya Watanabe, the founder of RakiRaki Ramen, opened a new restaurant specializing in karaage, Japanese-style fried chicken. Metl Bar, which is known for their boozy ice cream, opened a second restaurant in North Park that’s serving brunch. The Kebab Shop is opening their tenth San Diego location tomorrow in La Jolla Village Square. In Two People for $50, Wil’s pick is In-N-Out (celebrities, they’re just like us!). Troy’s pick this week is the carne asada tacos at Taquería Revolución, which has locations in Bonita and Otay Ranch. David recommends Rudford’s Restaurant, the historic diner that’s been in North Park since the 1940s (and he says the housemade salsa is really good!). Thank you for listening! As always, we want to hear from our listeners. Need a recommendation for takeout? Is there a guest you want us to book on the show? Let us know! You can call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a voicemail, or if you’re too shy, you can email us at happyhalfhour@sdmag.com. See you next week!

In this month's pocast with the beer gurus at Katcef Brothers we are all over the place! A critique of the Superbowl ads including the Anheuser-Busch corporate one, the Cutwater one and my favorite--the Jeep one with The Boss. But there is also 31 days of a Shamrock Stroll coming up on March 1st, so we touch on that and all the great local bars and restaurants that can help you with your Bud Light fix and hook you up with a coozie! Valentines Day is here, and the recommendation from the Katcef crew is Buds and Babes and the new 100 calorie ...and aptly named... Babe 100. And speaking of Babe, we do go off the rails a bit when Cassie takes control of the Zoom call and plays a hysterical outtake reel of Bill trying to film a Babe spot. Definitely worth the listen! It was fun. As always! Have a listen!
The Follycast Episode 8: Tales From The Folly In this month’s episode… …..after reading the first seven novels and still recovering from the climax of Lies Sleeping, we take a sidestep to look at the recently published short story collection, Tales From The Folly. Whilst we don’t usually enjoy short stories, we do enjoy these tales. A short story collection can be like a box of Quality Street chocolates – a bit hit and miss. So which are the caramel swirls and which are the green triangles? Along the way we get into a discussion about the birds and the bees of how rivers procreate and suggest some other Rivers characters that could feature in future short stories or novellas. We also reveal the results of our poll of listeners’ favourite stories from the book, which contains some surprises. The Follycast Episode 7: Lies Sleeping In this month’s episode… …..we review Lies Sleeping, book seven in the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch. The book brings to a conclusion the Faceless Man and Mr Punch plotlines (or does it?) in a story that somehow ties together magical bells, oubliettes, The Silmarillion, Merlin, King Arthur, goat sacrifices, foxes, cheese puffs, St Pauls, Glastonbury, Roman London and Covent Garden Tesco Metro. In our next episode we will be reviewing the recently released book of short stories ‘Tales From the Folly’ Credits Hosted by Margaret Holborn and Richard Marks, with Jan Trott and Jennie Beck Produced by Richard Marks for Uncertain Smile productions Theme tune: ‘London Is Inspired’ by Cutwater: www.cutwaterband.co.uk. The Follycast Episode 6: The Hanging Tree In this month’s episode… … after a magical midsummer sojourn with unicorns and fairies, we are firmly back in London and the hunt for the Faceless Man takes centre stage. Peter and Guleed investigate a drug-related death at a socialite party and along the way encounter shady US agents, Lady Ty floods part of central London and we discover the history of magic from a female perspective. And yes, Lesley is back and Harrods electrical department is trashed in the process. We tackle such issues as the collective noun for rich girls, at what point in the book Richard’s head nearly exploded, why Rivers Of London books are easier to read on a Kindle and what any of this has to do with the history of women’s football and the Number 14 bus route. When the weather is perfect on a mid-October afternoon, you head outside with our friends at Katcef Brothers, Inc. to sit at a picnic table and record a beercast! This week, I am joined by Cassie, Lauren and Bill from Katcef Brothers Inc. and we talk about tailgating at home, some perfect brews for Halloween and the fall and how Cutwater is really disrupting the market with their canned spirits. We also get distracted by that "33" on a Rollng Rock bottle. I am not sold on a White Russian in a can, nor am I convinced that a peppermint seltzer is something I want to try. And the NFL season is underway and you can win the Golden Raven Ultimate Bud Light Tailgate Giveaway by spotting the golden raven, snapping a photo, and posting to social media. Details are right here and the odds are good! Have a listen!
For the Drink of the Week this week we have the Vodka Mule and Bloody Mary by Cutwater. Cody explains his new nickname, Dustin recalls a story of misunderstood anal, and we all discuss the late RBG and how that could effect us moving forward.
The Follycast Episode 5: Foxglove Summer In this month’s episode… …after a summer break we discuss, appropriately enough, Foxglove Summer – book five in the bestselling Peter Grant series of novels by Ben Aaronovitch. It's a story that ties together changelings, unicorns, dogging, forests, steam traction engines, bees, fairy queens and Roman Roads, but if we are entirely honest, did we entirely understand the plot? Is it a much needed break from London and the Folly, or frustrating after the explosive conclusion of the book before it, Broken Homes? After a re-read is it still Margaret’s favourite book? Why does Jennie think it ends like an opera? Why does Richard hang around in a den of geeks and will Jan be able to visit Herefordshire any more? All this will be revealed in the next 42 minutes. On this episode of our podcast, Scene in San Diego Featuring Eater, we talk about how one well-known local distillery is still hosting tasting events – at home – and how these kinds of events are one way for San Diegans to take part in our local food and drink scene. Before the coronavirus pandemic, Cutwater Spirits would host its “Sensory Experience” cocktail pairings at its 250-seat tasting room and restaurant in Miramar. Those tastings have shifted online, still expertly-led by the brand’s director of quality and innovation, Gwen Conley.Cutwater Spirits founder and master distiller Yuseff Cherney joins us to talk about how, exactly, those virtual tastings work. He also talks to us about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on his distillery – and how Cutwater is managing to keep those canned cocktails moving, despite today’s unique set of COVID-19 challenges.Of course, as some San Diego companies find ways to keep business going, others must, sadly, throw in the towel. The economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic has forced many beloved local restaurants and bars to permanently close. This week we talk about another closure that really hurts: Jayne’s Gastropub on 30th Street in San Diego’s uptown area.Episode 5 Show NotesVirtual Cutwater Spirits: A Sensory ExperienceThese days, everyone’s comfort level is different when it comes to going out or staying home. Since practically everything’s gone virtual during the pandemic, we’ve been exploring some cool, local events that have taken that route. One of those events comes from San Diego-based distillery, Cutwater Spirits. It’s called “Sensory Spirits Experience” and it is a (usually) monthly class that pairs Cutwater’s cocktails with small bites. The brand’s next tasting will be held on Aug. 28 at 5:30 p.m. live on Cutwater’s Instagram account., for California-based consumers only. Here’s how it works: Customers pre-order the tasting kits here – either for home delivery or pickup at Cutwater’s Miramar tasting room. The kits include all the drinks and snacks that’ll be paired during the virtual class, plus instructions on how to plate the goodies when it’s time. The kits cost $25.This time, the class will focus on these three spirits from Cutwater: Black Skimmer Rye Whiskey (a 50ML bottle); Cutwater Opah (a 50ML bottle); Cutwater’s Paloma canned cocktail. Then, at the set time and date, Conley will lead the virtual tasting event, offering her rich knowledge and unique perspective on which cocktails pair well with which snacks.Cheers to that. Guest Interview: Yuseff Cherney, Cutwater Spirits Founder & Master Distiller Cherney joined our Scene in San Diego Ft. Eater podcast to talk about how Cutwater shifted those tastings online and why they’re both fun and educational for cocktail enthusiasts.“We have a fantastic partner in Gwen Conley,” he said. “She calls herself the ‘Sensory Goddess.’ And now she’s sending out these little care packages.” “She’s been able to go online and host these experiences, so people feel like they’re still connected to the brand and being able to experience these new products that we offer,” Cherney explained. “The Sensory Experience is not only an educational tool; it tends to expand the horizons of folks who maybe didn’t think of pairing a cocktail with food, you know? They were thinking wine or beer,” he added. “The expertise she has is amazing.”Cherney also talks to us about how Cutwater Spirits has been lending a hand in the community.Early in the pandemic, the distillery was one of more than a dozen members of the San Diego Distillers Guild that started producing hand sanitizer, donating it to places in need. Meanwhile, the Cutwater Spirits tasting room and kitchen in Miramar has been hosting free lunch pick-up events for local restaurant and bar industry workers impacted by the pandemic. Cherney knows times are hard for the industry, and small things like that can help.Although Cherney is fortunate enough to be able to keep his brand going during these challenging times, he talks about some obstacles along the way – like not being able to sell Cutwater’s signature canned cocktails at Petco Park during this year’s modified MLB season. The downtown San Diego ballpark is normally a huge stage for the brand when the Padres play at home, with actual live fans in the stands. He also talks about changes at the Cutwater Spirits tasting room.As Cherney touches on the future of local distilleries weathering the COVID-19 crisis, he also gives us the scoop on some new spirits and cocktails that are in the works, including a heavy-hitting, canned Long Island Iced Tea.For more content from The Scene, visit this website. Just because our local Oktoberfests have been cancelled along wth the real Oktoberfest is no reason that we can't start thinking about the delicious fall beers and the team at Katcef Brothers Inc teases us a little bit with a Spaten-Devils Backbone collaboration. We also hit on Cutwater's international tequila award and marvel at how well Bud LIght Seltzer contines to do with the intro of three nw flavors--pineapple, cranberry, and grapefruit. September 18th is Global Beer Responsibility Day and I am searching Hallmark for a card... but locally, you want to stay tuned to Eye On Annapolis and Katcef Brothers for a fun promotion this fall that could score you a wild tailgate party....when we can do that again! :( Enjoy and cheers!
The Follycast Episode 4: Broken Homes In this month’s episode… …we discuss ‘Whispers Underground’, the fourth novel in the Rivers Of London series by Ben Aaronovitch. In Broken Homes, Peter finds a whole new set of senior officers to annoy as bodies pile up across the home counties and South London. All roads lead to Skygarden tower, a fictional, but strangely familiar, tower block in Elephant & Castle. Peter and Lesley move in together, but not in the way many of us would have been hoping for back when we were reading book one. We experience a trippy Spring Court on the South Bank, Nightingale manages to lay waste to a farmhouse and the book ends with a huge revelation, much to the relief of hosts Margaret and Richard who have been carefully policing potential spoilers in the first three podcasts. As BBC continuity announcers are fond of saying, “Things will never be the same after this episode of the Follycast.” Credits Hosted by Margaret Holborn and Richard Marks, with Jan Trott and Jennie Beck Produced by Richard Marks for UncertainSmile productions Theme tune: ‘London Is Inspired’ by Cutwater: www.cutwaterband.co.uk. The Follycast Episode 3: Whispers Underground In this month’s episode… …we discuss ‘Whispers Underground’, the third novel in the Rivers Of London series by Ben Aaronovitch. We review a tale of pigs, potteries, FBI agents, sewers, art installations, Underground raves, earthbenders and time travel hallucination. The Grant and May partnership is back, but how well is Lesley coping and how has her relationship with Peter evolved? Are the noticeably lower level of horror and the smaller body count good things? If Zach had been more co-operative would that have made for a much shorter book? Does the London Underground feature as much as we were hoping? Eight years on from ‘Whispers Underground’ will Crossrail ever be finished? Meanwhile, as Peter settles down to watch the 2012 Doctor Who Christmas special at the end of his first year at the Folly (yes, everything so far really did all happen in the same year) we close the episode with a Rivers Of London quiz covering the first three books. Play along at home! The Follycast Episode 2: Moon Over Soho In this month’s episode… …we discuss ‘Moon Over Soho’, the second novel in the Rivers Of London series by Ben Aaronovitch. We all loved the first book, so how does this live up to expectations as a sequel? We welcome important new characters to the series and witness the appearance of a major new foe. We debate some of Peter’s questionable choices, Richard shares his childhood nightmares and we wonder at exactly what point in the future Peter Grant decides to get this all down on paper. All whilst listening to multiple versions of ‘Body and Soul’ We introduce our first listener feedback section, but there’s no spoiler zone this episode (although the spoiler klaxon does make its debut for the first time). The Follycast Episode 1: Rivers Of London In this month’s episode… …we start our look at the Rivers Of London novels by Ben Aaronovitch with – logically enough – Rivers Of London itself, the first book in the series. Will new readers Jennie and Jan share hosts Margaret and Richard’s enthusiasm for the world of the Folly? In the nail biting finale to the show we find out whether our control sample want to stick with the podcast for the next book or whether we will need a new pair of ‘test subjects’ upon whom to inflict our enthusiasm next time. Before that dramatic reveal we speculate about the influences on the book, London as a character in the novel and the significance of the ‘Molly Folly Bite Time Machine’. We wonder how on earth it could be made into a TV show and, in his desperate attempts to not mention Doctor Who, Richard talks about Sons Of Anarchy for no obvious reason. Richard and Margaret then retire to a spoiler zone to discuss how the book works effectively as a ‘Season Premiere’. What about spoilers? Each show will contain plot points for that particular book but, to not spoil the series for new readers, how the book fits into the series as a whole will be left to the end of each podcast (from 37:20 in this episode), so new readers can skip and come back at a later date. Tough times don't last, but tough people do. ㅤ ... ㅤ Edited by: @benlionelscott Spoken by: Tyrese Gibson, Myles Munroe, Jocko Willink, Les Brown Footage by: Cutwater, Barry O'Connell, Cale Glendening, Dan DiFelice, Fran Mendez, Max Paolucci, Mirko Bakulic, Rudy Gold, Travis Hanour, Whiplash, Ninja Assassin, Doctor Strange, Batman Begins, Kill The Messenger, Jobs Music: Alliance - Apocalypse Tomorrow ㅤ ... ㅤ Sometimes a setback is a set up for the greatest blessings of all times. You will grow through what you go through. It's called character. Instead of you complaining about how challenging and how crazy your life is right now, the question becomes this; Are you willing to go through it? Life is seasonal. That means, that no matter what you go through, it cannot last. Seasons guarantee change, seasons give hope, nothing remains the same in a season, seasons half always temporary, and the key to life is outlasting the season. When you are in a dark moment, sometimes you think that's a permanent address. But never make a permanent decision to try and solve a temporary problem. You go through a very tough moment, I mean hell on earth, believe me, you've got a choice; Am I gonna make a permanent decision at this point, or am I gonna outlast this season and make it through this dark moment? If you break, the fight isn't over. The fight is just beginning. You have the opportunity to get stronger. To show the world what you are really made of. When you come through that kind of experience and are able to reclaim your life, It strengthens you. you come back with a certain kind of power, and you'll never be the same again. Stay the course. You listening? Stay the course. Stop wanting everybody to play sorry for you like you're the victim. Be more responsible for your choices. Most people won't take on responsibility, most people won't say "I'll make that happen." Most people don't have that kind of guts. But see, I'm saying to you that when you acknowledge that, "Hey it's me. I'm the one that's going to turn this around. This opposition won't stop me from doing what I want to do. It can temporarily cripple me, but it will not determine my reality." Don't ever say when you're going through some rough time, "I'm going through a really bad tragic time." No. Say, "I'm going through a character-building experience." There's certain things, when you go through those things, and you come up out of those things, you come up a different kind of person. Different spirit, different power, different energy. I'm doing this because I wanna make my mama proud of me. I'm doing this because I want my children to have a better life than what I had. I'm doing this because all my life I've been told I'd be a loser, that I wouldn't make it. I'm doing this to make them a liar. I believe like Frank Sinatra, he said, "The best revenge in life is massive success."
