Hannah Gais and Steven Monacelli join for a wide-ranging discussion about the state of Twitter (now called “X”) three years after Elon Musk first moved to purchase it. Since then, Musk has transformed the platform into a self-serving MAGA machine that is crowning a new generation of right-wing media royalty. Monacelli walks us through his reporting on one of the platform's newer standouts — “Captive Dreamer” — as an example of who's benefiting from the new status quo.Links for Steven Monacelli:* Daily Dot: “A Hitler-quoting ‘Aryan' has the attention of JD Vance and Elon Musk—who is @captivedreamer7?”* Bluesky: @stevanzetti.bsky.social * Contact/Work: linktr.ee/StevanzettiLinks for Hannah Gais: * Bluesky: @hannahgais.bsky.social * Newsletter: postsfromunderground.ghost.io/Transition Music: “California Magic” by GooseSubscribe for emails about new podcasts and occasional newsletters. Early voting is almost here, and while many of our regulars are excited to vote for Kamala Harris and Colin Allred, we remind you that it's important to understand and vote your ENTIRE ballot - and nowhere in Texas is that more true this time than in Dallas. Propositions S, T, and U are written for the ballot to appear common sense, public safety and accountability measures, but in reality, they threaten to bankrupt the City of Dallas' budget and grant unprecedented local control to wealthy activists - many of whom directly involved don't even live or work in Dallas. We're happy to welcome back Dallas City Council Member Adam Bazaldua, who has a keen understanding of how these measures threaten to upend Big D, and investigative reporter Steven Monacelli, who has just dropped a major expose on the "Dallas HERO" group behind these three measures, exposing their funding, their motives, and how they hope to establish a model for the future short-circuiting of other Democratically-run big cities in Texas. This week, what appeared to be a ham-fisted silencing of a large group of journalists and left-leaning activists on Elon Musk's X - the platform that we, frankly, generally still call Twitter - was shrugged off by Musk as a side effect of routine housecleaning of bots and fake accounts. Our friend and regular contributor Steven Monacelli, investigative reporter for the Texas Observer, was one of those who found themselves temporarily in Twitter jail this week; he's not accepting that lame explanation, and neither are we. As the all-important 2024 election year spins up, will Twitter/X remain a place where the truth, and those who make it their life's work to seek out the truth, can count on an equitable playing field? Or, will it be subject to the whims of its increasingly erratic and childish billionaire owner, seemingly more interested in basking in the adoration of his right-wing conspiracist following than truly supporting "free speech" as he loves to claim? Various Christian religious orders in Texas have begun to merge in worrisome ways: in particular, the growing political goals of the "prosperity gospel" movement have found common cause among those following the "Seven Mountains Mandate" philosophy - one that calls for Christians to take over essentially all aspects of our lives. Diving deep into all of this has been our friend, investigative reporter Steven Monacelli, who has recently published two reports on all of this for the Texas Observer - what he reveals is unsurprising in some ways, but also troubling in the growing organization and influence these religious movements are gaining not only in Texas, but nationwide. The filing deadline for Texas' May elections is coming up at the end of the day this Friday, February 17 - and this episode is directed at Texas progressives who have considered running for local office but have hesitated, thinking the fight in a "red state" will be too difficult. Using as an onramp recent controversies involving the current Mayor of the otherwise-sleepy D/FW suburb of Colleyville, investigative journalist Steven Monacelli guides us through a deep dive into how troubled George Santos-style MAGA candidates, emboldened by right-wing funding, have pressed forward a takeover of small Texas cities at the school board level - and why potential progressive candidates like you, simply by embracing common Texan and American values (which, as we've said, are progressive values) would likely stand a good chance of undermining the ongoing MAGA agenda. Steven Monacelli writes about politics for Rolling Stone and The Dallas Observer, and he was in Dallas covering the most recent CPAC (Conservative Political Action Committee) event that featured the Hungarian Prime Minister (of course), and an announcement teaser by Donald Trump. Monacelli describes an event he says is the “weirdest political event I've ever witnessed.” It all starts with a fake jail scene, he says, and it gets more bizarre from there. https://advertisecast.com/thejeffwardshow Contact: sales@advertisecast.com

The US Justice Department is to review the police response to the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Officials have admitted police delayed entering the school for over 40 minutes as they did not believe it was still an active shooter situation. After nearly 3 months, the strike at cereal giant Kellogg's, which involved 1,400 workers at four different plants, has come to an end. On Tuesday, December 21, the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers' International Union (BCTGM) announced that its members at Kellogg's had voted to ratify the latest contract offer. We want to send all our love and solidarity to everyone who held strong on the picket line and congratulate them on their new contract. We also want to thank everyone who watched and participated in the 6-hour livestream fundraiser for striking workers that we cohosted last week with Mel Buer and the Morning Riot podcast (produced by the great David Story of The Valley Labor Report). All in all, we ended up raising just shy of $16,000 for Kellogg's workers and their families! That money is being divided equally and sent to the members of the BCTGM locals in Omaha, Nebraska, Battle Creek, Michigan, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Memphis, Tennessee. Even though the strike has ended, workers have racked up many costs since walking off the job in October, and every dollar we raised will go to helping them get through the holidays and get back on their feet. In case you were unable to watch the livestream, we are uploading all six hours of audio here for listeners. The strike may be over, but this was an incredibly special, entertaining, and solidarity-filled event that brought together powerful voices from the Kellogg's picket lines as well as special guests including: Marianne Williamson, Alex Winter, Randy Bryce, Breht O'Shea of Revolutionary Left Radio and Guerrilla History, Kim Kohlhaas of AFT-Wisconsin, Haeden Wright of the UMWA Auxiliary in Alabama, Caroline Smith of Student Workers of Columbia, Tevita Uhatafe of the Transport Workers Union, Steven Monacelli of Protean Magazine, Bryan Conlan of Strikewave, Dwight Rhinosoros of Eat the Rich, David Griscom of Left Reckoning, Jacob Morrison of The Valley Labor Report, and Professor Jon Shelton. Thank you again to all who participated and donated, and congratulations to Kellogg's workers on their new contract. Solidarity forever! Additional links/info below... This week we speak to the publisher of Protean Steven Monacelli about Qanon, astroturfing, hackers and muckraking.
Journalist Steven Monacelli of Protean Magazine joins DOOMED with Matt Binder to bring us his on-the-ground report of the big QAnon gathering in Dallas, Texas last Tuesday where QAnon believers thought JFK Jr. and other dead celebrities were going to unveil that they're still alive and supported Donald Trump. Plus on the patron half of the show: Tim Pool gets COVID, CNN's ridiculously wrong milk inflation segment, Project Veritas' latest hit job, Tucker Carlson can't make up his mind about January 6, plus your questions, comments, phone calls, and more! "I read a lot of books by dead guys but I don't want them to have the last word because they're fucking dead." In this episode of RADICALIZING REDNECKS WITH BIG TIM MURPHY and Shaan, they are joined by Steven Monacelli, journalist and found publisher of Protean Magazine, and they talk about workplace salting in popular media, Texas abortion bounty hunters, age limits for Supreme Court Justices, low voter turnouts, Disney dictating Florida legislation, Dwayne Johnson versus Ron DeSantis in 2024, the lack of Soros money, the proliferation of successful right wing media, the benefits of holsters, and more!
As Trump tried to subvert American democracy, he told DOJ officials that they were not “following the internet the way I do.” He was referring in part to ultra-rightwing conspiracy site Gateway Pundit—run by the so-called “dumbest man on the internet.” This week's episode of Fever Dreams goes inside how the habitually wrong website so influenced the president that he carried print-outs of its articles around the West Wing as he pushed the Justice Department to declare a fraudulent election. (One official says he threw the printouts in the trash. Or maybe recycled them.) Hosts Will Sommer and Asawin Suebsaeng also break down how new restrictions on anti-vaxxers are convincing some of them to finally get the jab, and how ISIS militants have infiltrated the alt-right's new social media network Gettr. Elsewhere on the episode, Daily Beast reporter Kelly Weill talks about how all those conspiracies about Trump retaking power in August are now imploding, and reporter Steven Monacelli breaks down how a flyer purportedly from Black Lives Matter groups making the rounds in Texas—which asked white parents to pledge to not send their kids to Ivy League schools—was in fact the work of a conservative PR firm and was amplified by the right-wing media ecosystem.. Former national security adviser Michael Flynn stands with a QAnon-themed quilt as it is auctioned off to audience members at For God & Country Patriot Roundup in Dallas, Texas. It sold for $6,500. (Image Credit: Steven Monacelli / Twitter)Over Memorial Day weekend and deep in the heart of Texas, powerful MAGA political figures and QAnon believers joined together for a wild-west themed conference inside an event venue made to look like a cowboy town. Joining SH!TPOST is Protean Mag publisher and independent journalist Steven Monacelli, who spent time at the conference incognito.Correction note from Steven: “I mentioned a salute done by Brace Belden that I erroneously described as a "Daesh" salute. That salute has broader and more general use in the Islamic world. It was effectively hijacked by Daesh and I regret associating it with them as such.”Follow Steven Monacelli: https://twitter.com/stevanzettiSteven’s favorite thing online: Ken Klippenstein tricking prominent conservatives into wishing Lee Harvey Oswald a happy Memorial Day.If you liked this episode, consider subscribing!
