How Austin Musicians Banded Together To Save Local Music

City Cast Austin

Austin has long touted itself as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” but for many years, there wasn't much of a safety net to help local artists survive and thrive. That's all changed now, in large part because of Austin Texas Musicians, which organized musicians behind a push to create The Live Music Fund, the first-ever sustainable public funding for music in the U.S. using hotel occupancy taxes. Host Nikki DaVaughn, a local musician herself, is joined by Patrick Buchta, the CEO of Austin Texas Musicians, about how local organizations like his are empowering musicians. And stay tuned for our special weekly segment, A Mile in Their Boots, featuring a bonus interview with Kathleen McElroy, a professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin.  This is the last of five episodes we're doing about the music community in Austin, brought to you by our exclusive launch sponsor, Tecovas. Tecovas knows more than handmade boots and fine Western wear — they've got an ear for great music, too. From legends of the past to rising stars on the scene, they love supporting musicians and music fans right here in Austin. So if you're headed for a good time on the stage or in the crowd, go in good boots from Tecovas.  You can find the rest of our Austin in Stereo series here:  Episode 1: How Can We Save Austin's Live Music Venues?  Episode 2: Can Rising Musicians Still Make It in Austin?  Episode 3: Why ‘Love Island' Is Crucial to This Austin Songwriter  Episode 4: Why Suzanna Choffel Says Austin's Music Community Is Magical  Want some more Austin news? Local COVID hospitalizations are now very close to crossing into Stage 4 range, but dropping slower than previously expected - the Omicron subvariant BA.2 could be a factor. University of Texas faculty are alarmed at Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick's comments about The Liberty Institute - a new conservative-backed think tank at UT - and worry that it is aimed at suppressing the accurate teaching of history. Austin Water has been flushing lines in south Austin after residents complained of foul smelling and tasting water - it apparently has nothing to do with the recent boil-water notice. Capital Metro expects to restore local transit service to full capacity by late this summer. Austin Bergstrom International Airport saw its fourth-busiest year in 2021 and its busiest December ever at the end of last year. Houston's Fajita Pete's opens it first Austin location with goals to open five more. The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians or HAAM has purchased an office building on South First and expects to open it by this fall. The DeLorean sportscar is making a comeback as an electric vehicle and its HQ will be in San Antonio - Austin is a possibility for the location of DeLorean manufacturing. Nine local craft brewers take gold medals in the first Texas Craft Brewers Cup with Black Star Co-op winning Best Small Brewery and Real Ale Brewing winning Best Large Brewery. And a cold front is inbound, cooling down our Friday, prior to a weirdly warm Monday and Tuesday next week.

Nakia sat down with Ashley Monique Menard on The Eff Your Fears Podcast to talk about how he doesn't let fear take him down. In fact, he uses it as fuel. They talk about everything from what it was like to be the first openly gay singer on The Voice to the pitfalls of depression and drugs. But, how following your passion can be the thing that saves you.  https://www.nakia.net/   Here's a little more about Nakia.  Professional background Nakia moved to Austin in 2002 from Chicago, where he had been working as an intern for Aware Records. After arriving in Austin, Nakia began to pursue a solo career but was first noticed by Fastball guitarist and co-founder, Miles Zuniga. Zuniga recruited Nakia to join his rock and roll lounge act side project, The Small Stars. Each member of The Small Stars had an alter-ego and complete back story. Nakia created the character, "Vic Odin", who was described as a sleazy, double-crossing, British manager. He left the band in 2006. In 2006, Nakia performed in theatrical productions of The Music Man and Rocky Horror Show. He also had a role in the independent film Lone Star Blues.[1] Nakia soon became a featured singer at many local Austin venues and a favorite among many Austin music critics.[2] Recording background Playing the Cards In winter 2007, Nakia released the EP Playing The Cards. He formed the band Southern Cousins and the band began receiving positive reviews of their live shows.[3] The band would go on to share stages with Willie Nelson[4] and BB King[5] and perform at events such as South Padre International Music Festival and Austin City Limits Music Festival. Water to Wine On April 14, 2009, Nakia release his first full-length album, Water To Wine. Produced by Mac McNabb, the album features songs written by Nakia, Michael Fracasso, and Monte Warden. The album was well received by local and national media.[6][7] St --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/effyourfears/support

In the Live Music Capital of the World, it’s not uncommon for fathers who regularly play gigs in the clubs at night to be on dad-duty during the morning and afternoon if their spouse has a full-time day job. We talked to two such Daytime Dads as Father’s Day approaches: Corey Baum, who plays urban country music as the leader of Croy & the Boys, and Andrew Nolte, a pianist and pop music composer who was our December 2018 Austin360 Artist of the Month.

A prodigious live performer, she appears regularly in clubs and concerts around the world. Winner of numerous awards, she is  Amanda also inspires and encourages her fans to respect and value all cultures through their shared love of music to create a more peaceful world society and support women in music. Her most recent album, Walking Two’s has already won awards and her Bollywood Remix single will be released shortly West Texas-born Sydney Wright grew up learning and loving music, crafting songs and amping up her skills as a performer as a teen playing country and rock. She developed her stunning performing skills with an impressive knack for looping tracks during live performances  with a huge voice that often gets her compared to Florence and the Machine and Sara Bareilles.  Post-college, in 2015, after recording at the famous Sonic Ranch Studios in El Paso, Wright moved  to Austin and took up sound engineering in town. But she also started performing,  making her way through venues as a formidable, usually solo, performer.  A hit-and-run accident put her in the hospital for 10 weeks, but with the help of  Health Alliance for Austin Musicians she has fully recovered and is back playing and recording, launching an indigogo site, creating stunning videos and, of course,  sound engineering.

loop-pedal pop artist and Austin-based sound engineer, Sydney Wright. She releases her new single, "Time of Night" from he upcoming albumSeiche, today via idobi radio. Listen to the single HERE. Follow up to “You Can Stay” (August 2017), “Tip” (July 2018) and video, “Seiche” (May 2018), the single are from her upcoming album Seiche, due out November 9, 2018. Between her latest releases, Wright endured a harrowing experience on June 30, 2018: ahit and run accident in downtown Austin. Surviving several severe injuries and surgeries. including four rods in her right leg, screws in her ankle, a wrist splint, a compound ankle fracture, broken tibia, multiple wrist and lumbar fractures, Wright is still pressing on and releasing music throughout the Fall. After the accident, the Austin community came to her side. Wright was approached by The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, and her friends and family started a Go Fund Me. Cheer Up Charlie’s, where Wright ran sound primarily is hosting a benefit show on September 29; Wanderlust, where she ran sound and booked Live Music Classes, hosted a benefit class in August. "It’s about Denton, Texas, where I graduated college. I met my best friends there. We went so hard, we were good at turning the weekday cares into that weekend flare,” Wright says of the song. There’s a powerful sense of peace and pure happiness in “Time of Night”. The synths move you and the (heart)beats skip as the vocals float overhead. “‘Time of Night’ is after the bars closed when we would stay out and keep visiting under the stars and streetlights on the town square.”

Do you know what $50,000 in cash looks like? Rikki Hardy, HAAM Director of Marketing and Events, sure does (hint: it's gross). And she's hoping to see a lot more on HAAM Day, September 11 in Austin.   Rikki, along with Katie Crowley, joined the show to tell us how the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians helps local musicians with their healthcare. They are in the final stages of preparing HAAM Day, their biggest donation day of the year.   If you're in Austin, check out some of the hundreds of bands that will be performing across the city on September 11 to support HAAM. Rikki told us about all the plans for that day, and she made the case for all local musicians to visit HAAM for their healthcare needs.   It's an incredible resource for our city and our music culture.
