A group of Apple employees, calling itself Apple Together, has opposed the company's ‘hybrid working pilot' return-to-office policy as a measure that actually kills flexibility, even diversity, and perpetuates a culture of working in silos. Google has sacked another AI researcher for questioning its science, NYT reports. And investors pour hundreds of millions more into Indian startups. Notes: A group of Apple employees calling itself Apple Together has opposed the company's ‘hybrid working pilot' return-to-office policy, first announced last year and being implemented from April, as a measure that actually kills flexibility and even diversity and perpetuates a culture of working in silos. In an open letter published last week, the group said the policy is really motivated by fear. “You have characterised the decision for the Hybrid Working Pilot as being about combining the 'need to commune in-person' and the value of flexible work," the letter says. "But in reality, it does not recognise flexible work and is only driven by fear. Fear of the future of work, fear of worker autonomy, fear of losing control.” Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the policy mid-last-year, requiring staff to return to offices on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and work from home or remotely available on the other two days. “Office-bound work is a technology from the last century, from the era before ubiquitous video-call-capable internet and everyone being on the same internal chat application. But the future is about connecting when it makes sense, with people who have relevant input, no matter where they are based,” the group said. Google has fired another top AI researcher from its Google Brain unit, less than two years after it dismissed two researchers who criticised the biases built into artificial intelligence systems, New York Times reports. The company has fired Satrajit Chatterjee, who questioned a paper it published on the abilities of a specialised type of AI used in making computer chips. Chatterjee led a team of scientists in challenging the acclaimed research paper, which appeared last year in the scientific journal Nature that said computers were able to design certain parts of a computer chip faster and better than humans, according to the New York Times. Chatterjee was fired in March, shortly after Google told his team that it would not publish a paper that rebutted some of the claims made in Nature. Google confirmed his dismissal to the New York Times and defended its decision to not publish his team's paper, according to the report. Zepto, a quick delivery service for groceries started by two Stanford dropouts, has raised $200 million in its Series D funding, valuing the company at around $900 million. Traceable AI, an API security and observability company, has raised $60 million in Series B funding, valuing the venture at more than $450 million. Toplyne, a SaaS platform provider that helps companies to monetise their product-led growth, has raised $15 million in Series A funding led by Tiger Global and Sequoia Capital India, and existing investors including Together Fund. Kaleidofin, a fintech company, has announced a second close to its $15 million Series B equity round led by Michael and Susan Dell Foundation. Google released its Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones on Tuesday, which are equipped with some of the AI capabilities that the internet search giant has to offer. Most notably, the new phones have an AI-powered camera system so big that it takes up an entire bar across the width of the phones, jutting out on the back. The phones run on Google's Tensor processor, a system-on-chip designed by Google. Reports in August suggested the chip was based on an Exynos chip from Samsung. The Pixel 6 starts at around $600 dollars and the Pixel 6 Pro will set you back by about $900 dollars. The phones will be available in the US from October 28. Aiven, an open-source data management startup in Finland, has more than doubled its valuation to $2 billion in fresh fundraising, the company's CEO Oskari Saarenmaa said in a blog post. Aiven has raised $60 million in an extension of a Series C round in which it had raised $100 million in March. The company had been valued at $800 million at the time. The company's investors include World Innovation Lab, IVP, Atomico, Earlybird, First Fellows, Lifeline Ventures and Salesforce Ventures. Zoho Corporation, an India-US software products company that makes business management and office productivity software, has introduced six new apps, three new services and seven major platform enhancements in Zoho One—the company's flagship suite of products. The new release helps businesses solve disjointed data challenges and close communications gaps across silos, so they can become more productive, adapt more quickly to remote and hybrid work models, and be better prepared for growth, Zoho said in a press release. ConveGenius, a Singapore-India ed-tech company, has raised $5 million in funding to develop a conversational AI platform, the company said in a press release. The pre-seed round was led by new investors, BAce Capital, Heritas Capital and 3Lines Venture Capital and existing investors, Michael and Susan Dell Foundation. Convegenius.AI aims to expand its products on Whatsapp and other Conversational AI-based channels horizontally, to service more customers across different verticals and allow developers to launch their solutions on the platform. Devnagri, a startup that offers an Indian language translation engine of the same name, with its focus on business customers, has raised $600,000 in seed funding from Venture Catalyst, Inflection Point Ventures and other co-investors. Nakul Kundra and Himanshu Sharma, the founders of Devnagri, want to make the internet accessible to Indians in their own languages. The platform combines neural machine translation with machine learning and a community to help with translations. Its AI-human combination can help businesses scale their operations in local languages at lower costs and faster and more accurate translations, according to the company. Rajah Augustinraj, principal at BCG and lead author of the report, and Geeta Goel, country director at Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, discuss their report on gig economy workers in India on this episode of the Capital Ideas podcast. What are the dynamics, pain points and opportunities for action in the emerging sector—that has the potential to serve up to 90 million jobs, roughly 30 percent of India's non-farm workforce; add up to 1.25 percent to India's GDP in the long-run, and create millions of new jobs across all sectors of India's economy
India is facing an alarming surge in coronavirus cases, a dangerous second wave that’s threatening to again derail both lives and livelihoods. Hard lockdowns last year battered its economy, and fresh restrictions and regional lockdowns to contain the surge are making many wonder what an economic recovery is going to look like. Many millions have lost their jobs over the last year, or seen their incomes dip. Is this a temporary phase? Recent estimates have raised India's growth forecast for this year to higher-than-expected, at over 12%. But how severely will the fresh wave affect recovery? How much of it depends on the rate of vaccinations? And how badly will the new curbs, curfews and lockdowns affect consumer sentiment? In this edition of WorklifeIndia, we discuss what can be done for India's economic recovery. Presenter: Devina Gupta Contributors: Gurcharan Das, author, commentator; Geeta Goel, country director, Michael & Susan Dell Foundation; Deep Kalra, founder & CEO, MakeMyTrip
