Dave Brown is an outstanding former Navy SEAL known for his small stature but immense determination. Standing at just 5'3", he was always underestimated, both by high school bullies and Navy recruiters, yet he remained undeterred and locked in on his goal to serve. Despite being initially dismissed due to his size, Brown's persistence and resilience led him to pass the rigorous Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training, even running with two stress fractures during "Hell Week." He graduated with BUD/S Class 115 and served with Underwater Demolition Team 21 and SEAL Team 4. His deployments took him across Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. His memoir, "And Goliath," tackles the human side of being a Navy SEAL. Especially in Brown's case, where his physical limitations seemed to doom his dreams, "And Goliath" chronicles the willpower he needed to tap into his potential for success, overcome perceived limitations, and come out at the end as an inspiration to all current, former, and aspiring special operators. 122 The Naked Warrior: Unleashed Navy Seal Principles with “Iron” Ed Hiner On today’s show I talk with Retired Navy Seal Lt. Commander and along around tough guy, Iron Ed Hiner! Welcome back to the show! Today we’ll learn from Iron Ed about breaking out of a victim mindset, naked soldiering and we’ll learn a brand new acronym called VUCA! Here’s a little more info on Ed. Ed Hiner was born and raised in Virginia's Blue Ridge mountains. He grew up with a thirst for competition, and developed an indomitable will to win that would serve him well in his life's work as a warrior and a leader. Ed graduated Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training in 1993 with class 189. He later attended Officer Candidate School, where he earned his commission as a distinguished honor graduate and class president. He had an acclaimed 20-year career as a Navy SEAL, during which he made nine major deployments on five continents. Twice awarded the Bronze Star with “V” for valor and combat leadership, Ed commanded hundreds of direct combat missions and low visibility operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Southeast Asia and Central America. In addition to his combat tours, he led BUD/S instructors, managed the training program for the West coast SEAL Teams, and was in charge of all SEAL basic and advanced training. Ed now offers up this vast experience base as a coach and consultant specializing in leadership, team building, mental toughness, resiliency and personal conflict resolution. He utilizes the principles from his book "First Fast Fearless, How to Lead Like a Navy SEAL," to help individuals and corporations build and lead effective teams. He believes leaders are only able to unleash the full potential of their team when they first understand and work through their own fears. First, Fast, Fearless!!! My guest this week is remarkable. He now applies his talents on Wall Street, searching for smaller cap companies trading at huge discounts in an effort to compound wealth for his investors. He is classically trained, having earned his graduate degree from Colombia, a school known for producing value investors. But his method also reflects what he learned across more than a decade of active duty in the U.S. military. Mike Zapata served us all as a Navy SEAL in the aftermath of 9/11 and ultimately as a member of the SEAL’s “Development Group,” commonly known as SEAL team 6. I think everyone listening strives for excellence in what they do. This week we get to hear from someone who has pursued excellence on our behalf. I’ll let him explain the meaning of his firm’s name, Sententia, but for now suffice to say we are lucky to have quiet professionals like Mike. If you are interested in supporting the families of soldiers who fought with Mike and lost their lives, I encourage you to check out the Tip of the Spear foundation and make a donation along with me, small or large. Please enjoy my conversation with Mike Zapata. For more episodes go to InvestorFieldGuide.com/podcast. Well there are a few more steps in-between the title of this episode. I had to bring back my guest Brandon Webb because his latest book, two in just a few months, is to important to not be talked about. Reading my advance copy of Total Focus: How to Make Better Decisions Under Pressure shifted me out of lethargy faster than anything I have read in a long time. Maybe it was timing. This show, and my guests are the best kind of therapy. Each week my perspective gets shifted, last week's show with Wayne Pernell prepared me for the impact of this one. Hopefully you have had a chance to listen to it and many of the others. They build, they shift and most of all, according to you, my listeners make thinking happen. Seven principles laid out, each more powerful than the last. Why powerful? Their simplicity. Not that they are always simple to implement but simplicity in the Why? And you know I love the Why? question! Integrity, authenticity and most of all a driving need to share his experience to help others learn and grow is why Brandon is back on the show with an open invite anytime. So lets go into some things we cover on this show: Why front sight focus with total situational awareness is the key to success in anything you do. How you can Embrace the Suck and come out the other side. Why you need to create a yearly vision theme and how it can change everything. At the end of the day, it is the choices we make that define who we become. Let me know what choices you are making after you listen to this episode. Find me on Twitter @thelaurasteward After leaving home at age sixteen Brandon finished high school, and joined the US Navy to become a Navy SEAL. His first permanent assignment was as a helicopter Aircrew Search & Rescue (SAR) swimmer and Aviation Warfare Systems Operator with HS-6. In 1997 his Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) package was approved. He would class up with over 200 students in BUD/S class 215, and go on to complete the training as 1 of 23 originals. As a SEAL he served with SEAL Team 3, Naval Special Warfare Group One (NSWG-1) Training Detachment sniper cell, and completed his last tour at the Naval Special Warfare Center (NSWC) sniper course where he served as the Naval Special Warfare west coast sniper course manager. Throughout his career he completed four deployments to the Middle East, one to Afghanistan and would later go back to Iraq in 2006-7 as a paramilitary contractor. His proudest accomplishment in the military was working as the SEAL sniper course manager, a schoolhouse that has produced some of the deadliest snipers in US military history. An accomplished and proven leader, Brandon was meritoriously promoted to E-6 while serving as an advanced sniper instructor at NSWG-1, and was recommended and promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer (E-7) his first time eligible while at the sniper course. He has received numerous distinguished service awards including the Presidential Unit Citation (personally awarded to him by President George W. Bush), and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal with “V” device for valor in combat. Webb ended his Navy career early after over a decade of service in order to spend more time with his children and focus on entrepreneurship (both his parents were small business owners). Today Brandon is focused on building his media and ecommerce business. He is the founder and CEO of the Hurricane Group, a U.S. & European based media and ecommerce company focusing on military entertainment, news, and monthly clubs. Brandon is regularly featured in the media as a military and business subject matter expert. He has contributed to ABC’s Good Morning America, NBC’s Today Show, FOX news, CNN, the BBC, SIRIUS XM, MSNBC, and The New York Times. Webb is a New York Times bestselling author. His books include, The Red Circle (St. Martin’s Press) Among Heroes (Penguin-Random House), Benghazi, The Definitive Report (Harper Collins), The ISIS Solution (SOFREP books), and The Power of Thought (self-published). He has two books scheduled to publish in 2017. The Killing School: Inside the World’s deadliest sniper program, is set to publish with St. Martin’s Press May, 2017. Total Focus: How to Make Better Decisions Under Pressure, publishes with Penguin Random House in the August, 2017. In 2012, after losing his best friend, Navy SEAL & CIA contractor Glen Doherty, in Benghazi, Libya, he founded The Red Circle Foundation (RCF), a non-profit with a 100% pass through model; every dollar donated goes to the mission and business partner donors pick up the Foundation’s overhead. RCF is focused on supporting families of the Special Operations community through emergency memorial, medical, and child enrichment programs (camps & scholarships). Brandon is an active member of the Entrepreneurs Organization New York (EONY), and enjoys spending time with his tight circle of amazing family & friends, being outdoors, and flying his experimental aircraft upside-down. He splits his time between his residence in San Juan, PR and Manhattan, NY.
