Straight Talk- Mind and Muscle
Ania Drozd never set out to become a clinical movement specialist. She began, instead, with a single question: Why? Why do people move the way they do? Why does pain persist even after treatment? Why do standard protocols so often fall short? The answers weren't in the textbooks. They were in the body. And they were inside her own.Raised in a family where sports were as natural as breathing, Ania's first passion was equestrian show jumping. Her early years were marked by discipline, competition, and performance under pressure—qualities that would later define her professional philosophy. But when the mental and physical toll of that life became unsustainable, she did something rare: she listened to her instincts and walked away. What followed was not retreat, but reinvention. Ania dove into weightlifting, calisthenics, and eventually clinical movement practice—not as a hobby, but as a form of personal problem-solving. Injuries, chronic pain, and a lack of clear answers from specialists forced her to build her own solutions. When MRIs, X-rays, and professional opinions led nowhere, she trusted her gut and went inward, combining her formal education in neuropharmacology with thousands of hours of experimentation and self-study.What emerged was a framework grounded in biology, behavior, and biomechanics—a common-sense system built not on trends, but on truth. She came to understand pain not as an enemy, but as a signal—one that reveals the body's inefficiencies, compensations, and imbalances. She began asking better questions—and helping others do the same.Today, Ania leads a select group of clients through that same process: breaking cycles of chronic pain and rebuilding functional movement from the ground up. Her work is defined by precision, quality, and a refusal to do anything halfway. She prioritizes depth over scale, impact over popularity, and results over trends. Her philosophy is simple:“You don't fix movement by treating symptoms. You fix movement by understanding the system.”This mindset has shaped her transition from in-person coaching to a streamlined, high-accountability online practice that spans time zones and continents. She's built a trusted brand, not by marketing noise, but by meaningful results—and by earning her clients' respect through clarity, consistency, and care.Ania Drozd is not selling movement. She's selling autonomy. For those willing to do the work, her process doesn't just relieve pain—it redefines the way people move through life.
Tim Stout “How A Pro MMA Career Paved the Way for Real Estate Success” This time, I had the pleasure of chatting with Tim Stout, former professional fighter turned real estate mogul. Tim's journey is nothing short of inspiring, and I can't wait for you to dive into our conversation. Tim, also known by his fight nickname "MOAB" (Massive Ordnance Air Blast), earned the title for his explosive, powerful presence in the ring. The nickname reflects his intense fighting style and the impact he had on opponents. Tim began his journey in martial arts at age seven and went on to become a professional MMA and kickboxing fighter, eventually competing in Strikeforce. With a pro MMA record of 16 wins and 10 losses, including 8 knockouts, 3 submissions, Tim's career was forged in real competition. Today, he's known not just for his fight record but for building a thriving real estate business grounded in the same discipline and drive that fuelled his years in the cage.As Tim grew up, his passion for combat sports expanded into tough man competitions—venues where he could test himself against untrained but determined opponents. One humbling session with a jiu-jitsu instructor changed everything, leading Tim to train seriously in the art and ultimately go pro. Despite his success, Tim recognized the limitations of a long-term career in combat sports. The physical toll and financial uncertainty—especially while running a gym—pushed him to make a bold pivot: real estate.“You can't teach tough.” For Tim, toughness is about mindset. It's the ability to take a hit—literally or figuratively—and keep moving forward. This combat sports mindset became his greatest transferable skill. In business, just like in the ring, setbacks are inevitable. Tim credits his success in real estate to the same principles he used in fighting: staying calm under pressure, showing up consistently, and pushing forward even when things get hard. Confidence isn't just a feeling—it's something earned through repeated exposure to discomfort and challenge.Tim's training philosophy is rooted in realism and development. For kids, he recommends boxing as the foundation—it builds confidence and helps them learn to manage fear and contact. He also values wrestling as a dominant, control-based discipline. For adults, particularly women, Tim stresses proactive, decisive action in dangerous situations, focusing on targeting vital areas like the eyes, throat, and groin. And for law enforcement, he advocates for training that bridges the gap between sport and survival—equipping officers with practical, hands-on skills to reduce reliance on weapons and improve outcomes in the field.Today, Tim splits his time between leading one of the region's top real estate teams and running his gym, Independent MMA & Fitness in Newnan, Georgia, where clients from 20 to 55 train not to hurt, but to learn. His advice spans far beyond the mat: be proactive, build confidence early, and never underestimate the power of physical and mental preparation. From the dojo to the closing table, Tim Stout's life proves that real-world resilience is the ultimate transferable skill.

Bill Fahy is a Texas-based website designer and firearms instructor with extensive experience in self-defense and situational awareness. Despite his background, Bill faced a potentially dangerous situation that emphasized the importance of constant vigilance. In addition to his professional work, Bill is also a passionate advocate for veterans' mental health, actively supporting Camp Hope, a vital initiative aiding veterans suffering from PTSD.Back to Bill's story. Despite his training, he ignored initial warning signs, like as a suspiciously parked car and a seemingly innocent young woman engaging him in conversation. His gut instinct told him something was off, yet he dismissed it. Fortunately, when the situation escalated, Bill's quick thinking and assertive response deterred the potential threat. This experience reinforced a critical lesson: even experienced individuals can become complacent, making consistent awareness and preparedness essential. Here are key insights for enhancing personal safety:Trust Your Instincts: Bill emphasized the importance of trusting your gut feelings. If something feels off, it probably is. Don't be afraid to leave a situation if it doesn't feel right.Be Present and Aware: Avoid distractions like headphones or your phone when you're out in public. Pay attention to the people around you and be proactive about your safety.Project Confidence: Bad guys often prey on the weak. Projecting confidence and awareness can deter potential threats.Avoid Distractions: Remain aware of your surroundings by avoiding distractions like headphones or excessive phone use in public spaces.Have a Plan: Always know your exit routes, and consider carrying self-defense tools when appropriate.Beyond his safety insights, Bill's advocacy for veterans shines through his involvement with Camp Hope. This organization provides immediate assistance to veterans dealing with PTSD, offering free accommodations and community support from fellow veterans. Bill's dedication to this cause highlights the urgent need for mental health resources for those who have served.Bill started his career in technology, opening FDI Creative Services, a website development firm, in 1996 in Chicago, Illinois. Bill is also a firearms enthusiast and competitive shooter, competing in IPSC matches for most of his adult life.Bill's main focus in the web design field is to help Firearm dealers, Hunting and Fishing Outfitters, as well as various other industries build their business through web design and Internet Marketing. This passion led Bill to Partner with Mark Atchison, an NRA pistol instructor and Federal Firearms Licensee. Together, they built www.everythinggun.com, evgun.com and armsads.com. These websites provide online shopping for firearms and gear in addition to pistol training and Conceal Carry Licensing. You can find our more about Bill at-https://camp-hope.com/www.FDIcreative.com Bill's web design company and main business.www.Everythinggun.com is his e-commerce firearms websitehttps://www.instagram.com/billfahy/I am Damian Porter , Former NZ Special Forces Operator, Subject Matter Expert from www.hownottodieguy.com and www.eatwellmovewell.netAnd you are listening to my STRAIGHT TALK MIND AND MUSCLE PODCAST sponsored by www.mystait.com - the ultimate daily formula for optimum hormone health, stress management, energy and performance. 100% natural and clinically proven ingredients, it provides everything you need to raise your game, in a convenient gut-friendly capsule. “The Evolution of U.S. Marine Corps Special Operations”: Insights from John DaileyJohn Dailey is a retired Marine Force Recon sniper and member of Detachment One, the first USMC unit in SOCOM. A veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq, he now trains Marine Raiders and holds multiple master's degrees, including an MFA in creative writing. He is also the author of Tough Rugged Bastards. Over the course of his career, John played a pivotal role in shaping the Marine Corps' special operations capabilities, including the formation of the Marine Raiders. From his early days in Force Recon to deploying alongside Navy SEALs in Iraq, John's experience spans some of the most transformative moments in modern military history. In this episode, John shares a powerful insight that has shaped both his military career and his life beyond service:"When the mission changes, your mindset must change with it. Adaptability isn't just a skill; it's a survival tool.”This mindset defined John's ability to lead through shifting roles, new threats, and unexpected challenges. After 9/11, as the Marine Corps was tasked with creating a new special operations unit, John found himself at the forefront of this transformation. Working alongside Colonel Robert Coates, John helped form the Marine Corps' first special operations unit, which would later become the Marine Raiders. Their initial deployment alongside Navy SEALs in Iraq in 2004 marked a turning point for the Marine Corps' role in SOCOM and the wider special operations landscape.John's philosophy on leadership, adaptability, and teamwork is deeply rooted in his military experience. He emphasizes that even support roles — mechanics, medics, and administrative staff — were vital to mission success. "Everybody fights," John recalls. "That mindset kept us prepared for anything.”Mental Fortitude and Problem-Solving: The ability to navigate high-stress situations and solve problems under pressure is crucial in special operations. John's resilience and growth throughout his career serve as an inspiration for aspiring operators and veterans alike.Since retiring, John has continued to share his insights on leadership, resilience, and the importance of finding purpose after military service. His book, Tough Rugged Bastards, blends personal stories with actionable lessons for overcoming adversity and embracing change. For those navigating their own transitions — whether in the military, corporate world, or personal life — John's message is clear: adaptability, teamwork, and purpose are the cornerstones of success.John's remarkable journey, from the sands of Iraq to mentoring others through his writing, stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and the enduring strength of the Marine Corps spirit. Why You Should Listen: This episode is a deep dive into the world of special operations, filled with historical context, personal stories, and valuable lessons. Matt Gantry's journey is one of resilience, transformation, and the power of storytelling. Once a truck driver navigating the open roads, his life took an unexpected turn after a devastating accident that forced him to redefine his future. Rather than letting adversity define him, Matt embraced writing as a means of healing, ultimately becoming the author of The Gamer—a thrilling story that blends his passion for gaming with his own life experiences."Writing became my way of processing everything—the pain, the uncertainty, the new reality I had to face. I never expected it to become something more, but storytelling gave me a purpose I never saw coming.”The Gamer by Matt Gantry is a gripping novel that tells the story of Harry Fearn, a video game enthusiast, with a love for the SAS ( Special Air Service) who finds himself in a real-life hostage situation. Drawing on his gaming skills, Harry navigates the dangerous scenario, using his strategic thinking and quick reflexes to outsmart the terrorists. The book, inspired by Gantry's own life experiences—including the accident that led him to pursue writing—seamlessly weaves action, suspense, and personal growth into a high-stakes narrative.Matt's journey from truck driver to author wasn't just about personal reinvention—it was about finding a voice and sharing a story that resonates. His dedication to storytelling has now led him to expand The Gamer into a six-part series, as well as an audiobook adaptation that brings his world to life in a whole new way.Matt lives by the belief that even the most unexpected challenges can lead to extraordinary transformations. Rebecca Santos: Advocate, Survivor, and Bold Voice for ChangeRebecca Santos, known as “The Bold Advocate,” dedicates her life to protecting children and raising awareness about abuse and trafficking. From her earliest days, Rebecca's life was shaped by challenges that most would find insurmountable. Conceived through rape, groomed as a preteen, and exposed to pornography as a young child, she emerged into a world marred by abuse and pain. Yet, guided by her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, Rebecca refused to be defined by her circumstances. Instead, she chose to embrace her purpose as a survivor—a thriver—a bold advocate for change.she works to educate parents, caregivers, and leaders on recognising and preventing abuse, driven by shocking statistics: 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 4 boys will face sexual abuse before 18.With encouragement from her husband, Rebecca embraced technology to amplify her advocacy, using social media and her website to connect with others and share resources. Her mission is fuelled by real-life stories of trafficking, like a 16-year-old girl narrowly escaping abduction at a football game, and by the limitations of law enforcement, highlighting the need for community involvement.Rebecca also emphasises personal safety, inspired by a terrifying experience that led her to seek firearm training and self-defence education. She advocates for open communication with children about body boundaries and recognising behavioural changes that may signal abuse.Politically engaged, Rebecca underscores how leadership and policies shape child advocacy efforts and encourages voting for candidates who prioritise safety. Her advice to aspiring advocates is simple: take action, leverage resources, and collaborate to combat exploitation.Through her relentless efforts, Rebecca Santos inspires others to stand up for vulnerable children and be part of the solution. In this riveting episode I welcome Mick Hawkes, a former British 22 SAS operator, to discuss his military experiences and the transition to his current mission of enhancing rural security. This episode offers a deep dive into the complexities of covert operations, the mindset required for high-stakes missions, and actionable advice for improving security in the agricultural sector. This episode highlights Mick's dedication to leveraging his military expertise to enhance community safety."Michael Hawkes QCB," stands for Queen's Commendation for Bravery, an honour he received for his covert operations in Northern Ireland. This prestigious award was given for his exceptional service during his undercover work. He elaborates on the nature of his work, emphasising the complexities and dangers involved in such missions. Mick reflects on the challenges faced during operations, highlighting the importance of situational awareness and self-protection.He spoke about his time in Northern Ireland, illustrating the skills he developed that are now applicable to his current work. He notes that during his covert operations, he often had to blend into rural environments, which has given him unique insights into the vulnerabilities of farms and rural properties. After leaving the military, Mick found himself living on a farm in a posh area, which sparked his interest in the agricultural industry. Initially focused on personal safety and situational awareness training, he soon recognised a significant gap in security culture within the farming community. Farmers are often easy targets for criminals due to a lack of security measures and awareness. To address this issue, Mick has developed a series of courses aimed at agricultural colleges, focusing on rural situational awareness and farm security. He believes that by teaching young farmers about the tactics used by criminals, they can better protect themselves and their properties.## Captured in Bosnia: A Lesson in Composure - The IncidentThe conversation shifts to a specific incident during Mick's time in Bosnia, where he and a colleague, Billy Billingham, were captured. Mick recounts the experience, noting that while they were detained, they maintained a level of composure that allowed them to gather intelligence on their captors. He describes how Billy, who attempted to communicate in Serbo-Croat, was repeatedly dragged in for questioning, while Mick chose a different tactic for his success. He shares that this mentality of resilience and calmness in the face of adversity is something he has passed on to his children, who are also in the military.## Active Shooter Training: Practical Advice ### Run, Hide, FightMick explains their approach to active shooter training, which involves teaching everyone in a company—from the CEO to the janitor—about their options in a crisis. He outlines the three primary responses: run, hide, and fight. While running and hiding are preferable, he stresses that sometimes fighting back is necessary. He cites examples from real-life situations, such as the Bondi Stabbing incident, where individuals who chose to confront the attacker had a better chance of survival.Mick shares a story about a company in America that sought his advice on security measures. He identified safe havens, where employees could hide during an active shooter situation. By marking these locations with clear signage, he aimed to reduce panic and provide a straightforward solution.### Military ExperiencesWe talked about the differences between various special forces units, specifically comparing the SAS to Delta Force. In this episode I discuss the critical role of tourniquets in emergencies with my guest Arius Sorbonne, co-founder of Snake Staff Systems along with his amazing wife- Jessica. Arius explains the innovative design and functionality of their tourniquet, emphasizing its portability and effectiveness, especially for children. We stress the significance of emergency preparedness and advocate for carrying tourniquets as part of everyday safety gear to handle unexpected injuries. Key Features of the Snake Staff Systems' Tourniquet- as seen on the Shawn Ryan Show and featured with Dom Raso of Dynamis Alliance Compact Design: The tourniquet reduces the overall profile by about 65% by eliminating the sleeve found in traditional models, making it more portable and user-friendly. Suitable for both Children, Babies, Pets and Adults.. ( most aren't) . One-Inch Webbing: The core component responsible for constricting blood flow is a one-inch piece of webbing, which has been effective in saving lives for years. Carabiner Lock: This feature enhances reliability during patient transport, addressing a common issue with other tourniquets that can become dislodged. Arius's Family Experience: Arius shared a personal story about a friend who had to apply a tourniquet to his child after a trampoline accident. This real-life example underscores the necessity of having such equipment on hand. Practical Skills for Kids: We touched on the importance of teaching first aid skills to children. Familiarity with medical supplies can empower kids to act confidently in emergencies. Everyday Carry (EDC): Many people are now including tourniquets in their EDC, which can be a game-changer in emergencies. Having essential medical supplies on hand can significantly increase survival chances. What First Aid do YOU EDC? Beyond his work with Snake Staff Systems, Arius collaborates closely with a range of specialized units, including Special Forces and SWAT teams. His expertise in tactical medical equipment and emergency response protocols makes him a valuable asset to these high-stakes environments. By working with these elite groups, Arius ensures that the tourniquets and other medical tools developed by Snake Staff Systems meet the rigorous demands of field operations. His partnerships with these units also provide critical feedback that drives continuous improvement and innovation in their products, ultimately enhancing the safety and effectiveness of first responders and military personnel. Additionally, Arius delves into the craftsmanship behind the custom firearms he manufactures, detailing the precision engineering and rigorous testing each gun undergoes to ensure reliability and safety. He shares insights into the various models they produce, tailored for different needs, from personal defense to professional use, and underscores the importance of responsible gun ownership and proper training. Arius notes that the messaging around self-defense and medical preparedness can often be polarizing, with some people dismissing the need for such knowledge. However, he believes that framing the conversation around safety and preparedness can help bridge the gap between differing viewpoints. By focusing on universal values like protecting loved ones, they can encourage more people to engage with the concepts of self-defense and emergency medical training. Final Thoughts: This episode is a powerful reminder of the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Arius and I shared a mutual understanding of the necessity of carrying reliable medical equipment and being proactive about personal safety. I encourage you to listen to the full episode and consider investing in a quality tourniquet for your safety and the safety of your loved ones. Author, Public Speaker, Freedom-Fighting Mama Bear. Lindsey Graham moved the heart of the nation with her story. Her fight to protect her business, her family, and her freedom resonates clearly with conservatives, Republicans, and American women. Now firmly planted in the midst of the fight against cancel and woke culture, her voice ignites the spirit of patriots across the country in unified pursuit of unfettered freedom. BUT- this was not the initial reason we made plans to do the show! Lindsey was involved in a harrowing experience at an airport, where she felt threatened by a suspicious man who followed her- likely for kidnapping and human trafficking. AND.. If you listen to the end she will tell you about the time she met President of the United States Donald Trump- and what it was like for her. This episode delves into the critical importance of situational awareness, trusting one's instincts, and the broader societal implications of women's safety in public spaces. Here, we break down the key takeaways from Lindsey's story, offering actionable advice and expert insights from her training at W.O.F.T ( Where Our Families Train) and my own insights from my Special Forces and Police Experiences and Training to help you stay safe and vigilant. Lindsey's experience at the airport serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of situational awareness, trusting one's instincts, and the need for a supportive community. By sharing her story, Lindsey hopes to inspire others to prioritise their safety and advocate for a culture that values and protects women in all spaces. Here are the key takeaways: Trust Your Instincts: If something feels wrong, take action. The importance of situational awareness and trusting one's instincts, especially for women. Seek Help: Don't hesitate to ask for assistance from bystanders or authorities. Challenges women face in public spaces and the need for vigilance. Be an Active Bystander: Support others in distress and raise awareness about the importance of vigilance. Educate and Advocate: Promote education on situational awareness and advocate for cultural and societal changes that prioritise safety. By implementing these strategies and fostering a culture of awareness and support, we can create safer environments for everyone. Stay vigilant, trust your instincts, and take proactive steps to protect yourself and others. Lindsey is the Patriot Barbie – a loud, proud, pro-gun, pro-life, Jesus-loving, red-blooded conservative, Republican woman. She's a Republican icon, a conservative activist, a faith-fuelled Christian, and a freedom-fighting mama bear. Her goal is to inspire and encourage fellow patriots to hold fast to their American values with unwavering resolution. The truth is, Lindsey Graham had no intention of being a public figure. All she said was, “No” and everything changed in an instant. When Lindsey said “No” to Oregon's statewide COVID-19 lockdowns and opened the doors of her salon in defiance of government mandates, she became the voice of millions of Americans tired of ridiculous government overreach. Her hallmark courage sparked boldness in weary business owners across the country, inspiring them to follow suit. That spark ignited a blazing firebrand – The Patriot Barbie. Her agenda is America's agenda, and she's resolutely calling out the left's woke lies. Currently, Lindsey is thriving in her role as a public speaker and advocate for personal freedoms and small business rights. She travels across the country sharing her story and insights, aiming to inspire others to stand up for their beliefs and take proactive steps in safeguarding their liberties. I'm thrilled to share with you all a sit down with my good friend, Jamie Pennell. Jamie is a former member of the New Zealand Special Air Service (NZSAS), one of the many heroes from the hostage rescue operation in Kabul in 2011 and the author of a gripping new book about his military journey- Serviceman J: The Untold Story of an NZSAS Soldier. We delve into not only Jamie's military experiences, but also his transition to civilian life, family and how he met his wife Alia, and his motivations for writing a book about his journey. Jamies's decision to write a book was sparked by encouragement from peers and family, as well as a personal tragedy. The death of our comrade, Steve Askin, motivated James to share his story. He began writing a tribute for Steve's family, which ultimately led him to expand his writing into a full book. Jamie's book offers a raw and authentic look into the life of an NZSAS operator. He shares the gruelling selection process, intense training, and high-stakes operations. His stories highlight the physical and mental toll of serving in special forces. In a gripping recount of the Kabul Intercontinental Hotel siege, Jamie Pennell delves into the harrowing details of the operation that unfolded over ten intense hours. The siege began when a group of heavily armed terrorists stormed the hotel, taking numerous hostages and creating a chaotic and perilous environment. Jamie describes the initial moments of the attack, highlighting the confusion and urgency that gripped both the hostages and the responding forces. The terrorists, equipped with automatic weapons and explosives, had meticulously planned their assault, aiming to maximise casualties and create a high-profile crisis. Jamie emphasises the critical importance of clear communication and coordination among the various responding units, including local Afghan forces and international special operations teams. He details the tactical decisions made in real-time, such as the strategic placement of snipers and the careful breaching of rooms to minimise harm to hostages. The operation required not only physical bravery but also psychological resilience, as the rescuers had to navigate booby traps and potential suicide vests worn by the terrorists. Jamie's account underscores the complexity of urban combat and the necessity of maintaining composure under extreme pressure to ensure the safety of innocent lives. Jamie recounts the painstaking efforts to gather real-time information and adapt strategies accordingly. Jamie's detailed narrative provides a vivid portrayal of the bravery and professionalism exhibited by the special forces, shedding light on the often unseen and under-appreciated complexities of Special Forces operations. Jamie's book chronicles his journey through the rigorous selection process, intense training, and operational experiences in the NZSAS. He provides a realistic portrayal of what aspiring special forces candidates can expect, emphasizing the physical and mental toll of the training and the operational challenges faced during his 18 years in the regiment. This episode of the "Straight Talk Mind and Muscle Podcast" provides a candid and insightful look into Jamie's journey from a member of the NZSAS to a fulfilling civilian life. Through personal anecdotes and practical advice, James inspires listeners to embrace change, cultivate self-awareness, and seek support as they navigate their own transitions. His experiences serve as a testament to the resilience and dedication of those who serve in elite military units, offering valuable lessons for anyone facing challenges in their own lives. Understanding Bipolar Disorder Through the Lens of Major General Gregg Martin: In this episode I interviewed a distinguished military leader with a compelling story of resilience and advocacy. Our conversation delved into Greg's journey with bipolar disorder, his mission to destigmatize mental health issues, and the lessons he has learned along the way. Gregg's Mission and Purpose: Gregg's mission is to share his bipolar story to help stop the stigma, promote recovery, and save lives. He emphasised that this has become his full-time occupation, and he finds great fulfilment in it. Here are key takeaways from the episode: Pursue continuous learning and balance professional responsibilities with academic pursuits. Recognise the symptoms of bipolar disorder and seek early intervention. Share your story and support mental health advocacy efforts. Prioritise self-care and consult healthcare professionals for medication management. Acknowledge the impact of trauma on mental health and support veteran mental health initiatives. Communicate openly and show empathy in rebuilding relationships affected by mental health issues. By implementing these insights and recommendations, we can contribute to a more informed and supportive community for those affected by bipolar disorder and other mental health challenges. Understanding Bipolar Disorder: Gregg provided a comprehensive explanation of bipolar disorder, a mood disorder that affects the brain. It causes individuals to experience periods of mania and depression. Managing Bipolar Disorder Gregg highlighted the importance of lifestyle changes in managing bipolar disorder. He mentioned that getting enough sleep and not taking the job too seriously could have slowed down the progression of his condition. The Role of Medication: Gregg shared his positive experience with lithium, a medication that stabilised his brain chemistry and alleviated his symptoms of depression. The Impact of Military Service on Mental Health and The Triggering Event” Greg recounted the pivotal event during his service in Iraq in 2003, which he believes triggered his bipolar disorder. The combination of pressure, thrill, euphoria, and stress during this period activated his bipolar gene. The Prevalence of Mental Health Issues Among Veterans: The conversation also touched on the high prevalence of bipolar disorder and other mental health issues among veterans. Greg noted that while 3-4% of the general population has bipolar disorder, the rate is significantly higher among veterans. Rebuilding Relationships Greg shared how he rebuilt his relationship with his spouse after going through a difficult period of mental health challenges. He emphasized the importance of communication, empathy, and mutual support in rebuilding their relationship. This episode offers valuable insights into the complexities of bipolar disorder, the importance of mental health advocacy, and the impact of military service on mental health. My esteemed guest, Dr. Leslie Dobson, a seasoned clinical and forensic psychologist, joined me to unravel the complex tapestry of the criminal mind, particularly focusing on sexual predators. Before we dive into the details of our discussion, I want to mention Leslie's recent contribution to the literary world. Leslie has authored a compelling book titled "The Friend Cleanse," which is an insightful exploration into the dynamics of personal relationships and the importance of surrounding oneself with positive influences. This book is a must-read for anyone looking to improve their social circle and enhance their overall well-being. Here's a sneak peek of what we dived into:
Steve Lazarus- Author,- "Behind the Badge: A Retired FBI Agent's Journey into Writing" I introduce the one and only Steve Lazarus, FBI agent turned author, and I know you'll love the show as much as I did. Steve Lazarus is a first-time author, retired FBI Special Agent, and United States Air Force veteran. He served twenty-two years in the FBI, spending the first half of his career investigating drug trafficking organisations and violent street gangs. Later, he became a full time bomb technician, an assignment which led him to Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan as part of the Global War on Terror. After retiring from the Bureau, he spent several years as a national security contractor in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Steve's journey from law enforcement to literary success is nothing short of inspiring. His debut novel, "Call Me Sonny," is a thrilling dive into the world of a hitman network operating in the shadows of the dark web. The kicker? It's inspired by a real-life threat Steve faced during his FBI days. Steve's debut novel was inspired by one of his real-life cases. After arresting a subject who threatened to unleash a bioterror attack on the Atlanta subway system, Steve and his partner found themselves of the receiving end of a death threat from the soon-to-be convicted felon. And though that subject would spend the next 25 years in prison, Steve couldn't help but wonder….what if he could make good on his threat, even from behind bars? The most logical solution would be if he hired a hit man, and….voila!!!! A novel was born. Talk about authenticity! “Call Me Sonny” was a labor of love incorporating the personalities, anecdotes, and experiences of Steve's multi- faceted FBI career, and it will be the first in a series of Bryce Chandler crime thrillers.

Richard's philosophy shatters the conventional definition of a 'savage,' redefining it as someone who fiercely follows their beliefs and adds value to their life. Richard's approach to life – focusing on the present and maximizing every 24 hours – is a powerful reminder to live intentionally. We also explored the transformative journey of his Military career with the Arctic Rangers, the profound impact of nature on our lives, and the limitations of a fitness culture obsessed with aesthetics over functionality. Richard's holistic approach to training, emphasizing performance and mental fortitude, is a breath of fresh air in a world fixated on surface-level appearances. A New Zealander based in the USA- just outside of Memphis, Tennessee, shares his journey from the New Zealand SAS (NZSAS) in the 1980's to establishing a specialized training school for high-end military and law enforcement personnel in the US. With over 4 decades of experience in teaching and training in the US he spoke about the niche focus of his company on professional Tactical and Breaching training for military, law enforcement, and other government agencies. We spoke about the transition from New Zealand to the vastly different scale of operations in the US. Alan reflected on the continuous learning environment in America and his adaptation to the new training landscape, emphasizing the importance of specialized skills and constant improvement. His experience with NZSAS, which included both domestic and international missions, provided him with a unique perspective on special operations and the importance of advanced training methods- that demanded precision, quick thinking, and a deep understanding of tactical operations. After a distinguished career in NZ, Alan decided to leave for several reasons. He sought new challenges and wanted to leverage his expertise to make a broader impact on the field of tactical training. He saw an opportunity to fill a gap in the training of military and law enforcement personnel in the United States, where he could apply his specialized knowledge to improve their operational capabilities. He has built a reputation for excellence and become a respected figure in the tactical training community. Alan's dedication to his craft and his commitment to continuous improvement serve as the foundation for his company's success and the success of those he trains. A Great yarn with a true down to earth, good Kiwi Bloke and a Professional Operator, I hope you enjoy the show as much as I did. Barrie Rice NZSAS Addressing the Demons- Through The Dark Times To Live A Better Life Today I spoke with Barrie Rice, former New Zealand SAS Operator, Reality TV star, Movie Advisor and Actor, Author and one of the Original Blackwater Private Military Contractors. I would like to thank Geoff “Tank” Todd of the https://toddgroup.com/ for connecting us and making this amazing interview happen. The show started off how I thought it would, but Barrie surprised the hell out of me 13 minutes from the end about his personal journey and by god-it gave me goosebumps and has turned out to be one of the most powerful shows I have ever had the honour to be a part of. Truly mind blowing! We discussed Barrie's work and career from military to civilian security, his work with the America's Cup Teams, and his experiences in close protection and private military contracting. Barrie shared his preference for working with American military personnel, his progression to Blackwater, and his respect for Blackwater's founder, Erik Prince. He addressed the media's negative portrayal of Blackwater and the political complexities of military operations. Barrie also reflected on his combat training and his role in the movie "Zero Dark Thirty, Hurt Locker,” and even his view on who really killed Osama Bin Laden. But - and unexpectedly-In the final 13 minutes of the podcast, Barrie opened up about his personal battles, providing a raw and honest account of his struggles with alcohol and mental health issues. He shared a look into the dark times he faced after during his PMC work, the challenges of finding his footing back in civilian life, and the journey towards sobriety, well-being and happiness, for himself AND his family. Barrie's story is one of resilience and hope, as he shared the steps he took to reclaim his happiness and the lessons he learned about the importance of mental health support for veterans.
