Bat Therapy: Psychology of Batman and other Comic Superheroes
Remember when we talked about Batgirl: Year One? One of the authors listened and loved it! We talked with Scott Beatty about another comic he co-authored, Nightwing: Year One. Scott Beatty has written several hundred comic book stories for DC Comics and other publishers including CrossGen Entertainment, Dark Horse Comics, Dynamite Entertainment, and IDW Publishing. His most notable releases include Robin: Year One, Batgirl: Year One, Nightwing: Year One, Batman: Gotham Knights, Joker: Last Laugh, Gen13, Number of The Beast, Ruse, Buck Rogers, The Last Phantom, and many others.Get to know more about Scott here:X: @Scott_M_BeattyThreads: scottmbeattyInstagram: scottmbeattyWebsites:https://scottbeatty.blogspot.com/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Beattyhttps://www.amazon.com/stores/Scott-Beatty/author/B00JJDIS3K?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_2&qid=1727738848&sr=1-2&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=true
Send us a Text Message. Before he wrote for comics and other comics-inspired projects, Scott Beatty was the founding editor of ToyFare magazine, a spin-off from Wizard that focused on, what else, toys! But comics and superheroes are his original passions, and you can see that on display in his "Sidekick Trifecta" that he co-wrote with Chuck Dixon: Robin: Year One, Batgirl: Year One, Nightwing: Year One, in addition to Joker: Last Laugh. And 20th Anniversary Editions of these books are starting to hit shelves! Besides the actual comics, he's written a ton of superhero reference books, including Ultimate, Definitive, and Essential Guides to the Avengers, Batman, DC Comics, JLA, Superman, and Wonder Woman! The guy knows his stuff.Look for Nightwing: Year One - The 20th Anniversary Edition slipcase hardcover coming out on August 6. Bat Therapy: Psychology of Batman and other Comic Superheroes
We love how Babs comes onto the scene – she is unapologetically herself, just looking for a way to help the city she loves without caring what Batman or her father, Commissioner Gordon, has to say about it. Emilia ends up connecting with Batgirl more than she expected. We also talk about how this comic, much like Cognitive Processing Therapy, explores the complexities of trusting someone.
The Condiment King proves that you can hold up a bank with dijon mustard. You can't do it well, and you'll get taken down almost immediately, but you can do it. The Condiment King actually first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series, but his first comic appearance was in Batgirl: Year One. -- The Jedi Recruitment Drive is on now! Have a child who can move things with their minds? They'll find you!

We return to Gotham City with Batgirl & Robin! While we weren't expecting to stick with DC Comics for another round of episodes, this month, we allowed our listeners to pick our couple, and Dick & Babs were the chosen winners. What separates these two on-again/off-again lovers from most comic book couples is how they've been allowed to grow beyond their initial appearances, and as we see in "Batgirl: Year One," who they were when they first met is not who they are in today's continuity. There is great excitement in going back to their earliest days and watching their awkward relationship bloom under the gaze of their Batman daddy. To guide our hands with Dick & Babs, we're turning to Dr. Roberta M. Gilbert and her book "Extraordinary Relationships: A New Way of Thinking About Human Interactions." We don't live our lives alone. We're surrounded by others who shape our destiny. Don't turn from them! Embrace your Bat-family! Issues covered in this episode: "Batgirl: Year One" No. 1 - 9, written by Scott Beatty & Chuck Dixon, penciled by Marcos Martin, inked by Alvaro Lopez, lettered by Willie Schubert, and colored by Javier Rodríguez. Be sure to follow the podcast on Instagram and Twitter @CBCCPodcast, and you can follow the hosts @MouthDork & @sidewalksiren.
Scott Beatty is an incredible guy. He's a writer, professor, father and DC Comics historian on top of everything else. Beatty has written several books in the Batman Family series of events including Nightwing: Year One, Robin: Year One and Batgirl: Year One (the latter two with Bane co-creator, Chuck Dixon). He has also published several, "Ultimate Guides" via DK Publishing that included, Batman: The Ultimate Guide to the Dark Knight, The Superman Handbook: The Ultimate Guide to Saving the Day, Wonder Woman: The Ultimate Guide to the Amazon Princess and The DC Comics Encyclopedia, to name a few. On top of all that Beatty has recently survived a major health crisis following a respiratory bout with COVID-19 that had him at one point coughing up blood. Literally, the man has gone from writing about superheroes to becoming a survivor and in all that did not lose his sense of humor, his determination to continue working and continues to take care of his family post recovery. We spoke with Beatty about his career, the false negative result of the test that doctors later confirmed was most likely the dreaded "C-word" that people don't want to mention and the future of the industry as a whole with the new normal when it comes to publishing books. You can follow Scott Beatty on Twitter @Scott_M_Beatty, his blog at ScottBeatty.Blogspot.com and find out what else he is working on via the interview above.

Character Corner - A Podcast on Your favorite Comic Book Characters
Kriss and Dpalm are back with another Character Corner episode. This time its Part 1 of a two part series on the Robins. We’ve covered most of the Robins already in previous episodes like Batman's Rogue Gallery, Tim Drake, all the Batgirl episodes and our three part Batman series. But we’ve never really dug deep into each of the Robins and gone into their differences and how they tell the larger story of Batman. We’re starting with Dick Grayson and Jason Todd not just because chronologically they were the first two robins but also because they represent the larger issues we’ve seen with Batman & DC Comics when they get translated to movies and TV. Everyone knows Dick Grayson is the first Robin but the reality is, by the time most of us were reading comics and aware of Batman, Grayson was far removed from being Robin. Same could be said for Jason Todd. Jason was first introduced in 1983 and was killed off in 1988. The first two Robins came and went before most people today were even 10. And that’s where we see DC getting into trouble. The mantle of Robin is almost just as important and divisive as Batman. There isn't another sidekick character in which you have 4-5 drastically different character holding the title and all of them are just about important. Dick, Jason, Tim/Stephanie and Damien. We’re gonna go through each Robin and talk not just about some of their key issues but really dive into how they’re different from each other, and the role they play in Bruce/Batman’s life. First up...the heir & the prodigal son: Richard & Jason. Key Issues: First Appearances Detective Comics #38 - First appearance of Dick Grayson/Robin Tales of the Teen Titans #44 - First appearance of Dick Grayson as Nightwing Batman #357 - First appearance of Jason Todd (Pre-Crisis) Batman #366 - First appearance of Jason Todd as Robin (Pre-Crisis) Early Years Batman Year 3 Batman #436 - 439 Batman Chronicles: The Gauntlet - Dick's final test from Batman Robin Year 1 - Chuck Dixen and goes really well with his Batgirl Year One book Dark Victory - Sequel to The Long Halloween and retells the origin of Dick Grayson Enter Jason Todd Batman #408 - First appearance of Post-Crisis Jason Todd Batman #410 - Post-Crisis Todd's first appearance as Robin New Teen Titans vol 2 #20 Nightwing Year One Batman #416 - Jason & Dick meet for the first time; Bruce admits to why he replaced Grayson Death of Jason Todd Batman #422 Batman #424 - Does Jason kill Garzonas or not? The first step in the Christopher Nolan trilogy is our featured review for this week; Batman Begins, released in 2005. We're delighted to have Jamie Selice on the show to also give her thoughts on the movie. Jamie is the author of screenplay Nightwing and Batgirl: Year One and has been a big fan of the Bat Family after being introduced through the Nolan movies. Please give the screenplay a read. and you can also follow Jamie on Twitter.Batman Begins was a much darker and more grounded take on the Batman character than had been seen in the previous decade. Key comic stories which influenced the story are Batman: Year One (1987), The Man Who Falls (1989) and The Long Halloween (1996-1997). Batman: Year One was written by Frank Miller and art by David Mazzucchelli, and is generally regarded as one of the best graphic novels of all time. The story looks at his early days as a costumed vigilante and how he develops, makes mistakes and grows. The Man Who Falls (1989) was created by Dennis O'Neil and Dick Giordano, and sees young Bruce fall down a hole and then later leaves Gotham to develop his martial arts and forensic skills. And the Long Halloween, written by Jeph Loeb and art by Tim Sale, also explores Batman's early days of crime fighting. The premier episode of the Punch Like a Girl podcast looks at the formative years of one of the best known and most beloved superheroines in comics. Hosts Nathaniel and Lis take a look at this seminal work and pick apart the highs and lows. It seemed fitting to start with a character who shares an occupation with one half of this podcasting duo. Yes, it’s true. Lis is a masked vigilante too! Or maybe it was being a librarian… Nathaniel wrote this entry and he doesn’t do research, so this could go either way. Our theme song was composed and performed by erica dreisbach, and you can find more of her work at her website right here. And our logo art is by Nic Buxom. In this week's ball-stomping episode, Magnus continues the Batgirl and Robin megaseries, which is a megaseries all about the occasionally romantic relationship between Batgirl and Robin. Or, more accurately, Babs and Dick. The entire concept for this thing came from a Batman comic book reading project upon which your wise emperor embarked not long before recording this episode, whereupon he fell unwittingly into the Babs/Dick ship subplot. This week, the spotlight falls on the Batgirl one-shot from 1997, which was a tie-in to Batman & Robin, as well as the Batgirl- Girlfrenzy one-shot from 1998. These two issues relate to Babs and her determination to overcome, even when faced with psychotic serial killers such as the Joker and Mr. Zsasz. Unlike other books from this megaseries, the comics discussed in this episode were both written by the same writer (eg, Kelley Puckett) and explore somewhat similar ideas in very different ways. These are worthy follow-ups to Batgirl- Year One... even though that was published after these books... As a result, these two comics both fit together rather conveniently into my head canon... for those of you who go in for such things. Finally, Trentus Magnus Punches Reality has always revolved a fair amount around music. Of nothing is that more true than this Babs/Dick megaseries. Further, this week's theme song has a decided Babs-like flavor to it. Due to the avalanche of ass-kickery, unfortunately there was just no time for listener feedback this week. On the other hand, there has been a fair amount of feedback (and feed-forward!) a few weeks ago so this subject hasn't been entirely ignored lately. Patience! The vast backlog of feedback will be addressed in due time. Fear not! In the meantime, though, don't let the lack of feedback this time get you down! You can still offer your feeble effort at tribute! You humble serfs are always welcome to kiss your benevolent leader's ring. Corrupt DiManzocorp interns are ready, willing, able and eager to accept your bribe to present your meager missives to your wise emperor. The email address to use is trentusmagnus@gmail.com as the other seems to be having technical problems. In an another sublime act of truly unprecedented charity, your emperor permits you lowly rabble to suggest topics for a future episode. Thus, petitions may be sent to trentusmagnus@gmail.com for DiManzocorp interns to review, whereupon your leader might consider thinking about the possibility of potentially discussing whatever you have in mind some day. And that's a promise!

This week is a ball-kicking episode! Look at the artwork! Batgirl is kicking a bad guy in the balls! The BALLS! How was I *EVER* not using this for the art this week! So here we go! In this week's ball-kicking episode, Magnus continues the Batgirl and Robin epic megaseries! This one's all about Barbara Gordon, Dick Grayson and their rather bizarre relationship! You see, boys and girls, this all spun out of a Batman comic book reading project your wise emperor undertook a week or three before recording these episodes, whereupon he discovered the Babs/Dick ship subplot. Yes, this subplot was completely invisible to Magnus prior to just a few months ago. Really! This week, the spotlight falls on the Batgirl- Year One miniseries, which modernizes and updates Babs' entry point into the DCU. Or DCM. Or whatever the hell they call it this week. Even though this is certainly an update, it is striking (no, really, *YOU WILL BE STRUCK*) how faithful this enterprise is overall to Barbara's original introduction. Much fun is had but, perhaps most importantly, Magnus has a whole new appreciation for Babs and her badassitude! Finally, Trentus Magnus Punches Reality has always depended a fair amount of music. Of nothing is that more true than this Babs/Dick megaseries. Due to the avalanche of ass-kickery, unfortunately there was just no time for listener feedback this week. However, there has been a fair amount of feedback (and feed-forward!) in fairly recent episodes so this subject hasn't been entirely ignored. Patience! I, along with special guest and friend Kevin Cushing, discuss the nine issue mini-series Batgirl: Year One. Some of the topics we touch on are the heavy foreshadowing, Barbara's relationship with Dick Grayson, Marcos Martin's ingenious art, and how old is Babs, really? Plus I round out the episode with a literary recommendation and […]
