This week, Tara and Kris start by celebrating the conclusion of the WGA strike and sending support for SAG-AFTRA in their continued quest for an equitable deal. Looking ahead, they wonder about the future of AI. Tara doesn't think it's as bleak as it sounds. Kris disagrees. Luckily we have opinions on survival reality shows to bring us together. After getting deep into Alone Australia and Survivor, we hear more about RuPaul's Drag Race UK from Tara and then dive headlong into recommendations! Official Recommendations From Kris: Gaga: Five Foot Two (Netflix) This week, Kris recommends the 2017 Netflix documentary, Gaga: Five Foot Two, which covers a year in the life of Lady Gaga as she works on her fifth studio release album, Joanne. It's a deeply vulnerable piece according to Kris, examining long standing pain conditions that the artist suffers from. It also details the 51st Super Bowl half-time show where Gaga gave her critically acclaimed appearance. From Tara: Bingo Love by Tee Franklin (Author), Jenn St-Onge (Artist) After comic creator Lawrence Lindell talked about it in our bonus episode with him, Tara picked up one of the books he suggested: Bingo Love. Spoiler: she fell in love with it. Bingo Love is a second-chance romance between two Black women that starts in the 1960s when they meet and become instant best friends at their church's Sunday bingo. Separated once their relationship turns romantic and is discovered, they go on to marry men, have families, and then meet once more sixties at another Sunday bingo when they're in their 60's. It's a beautiful story about love, second chances, and honestly how many stories like this include Black women? We love to see it. Check it out. Kris and Tara sit down with cartoonist Lawrence Lindell to talk about his upcoming graphic novel, Blackward (releases September 26th!). As well as being a self-proclaimed introvert (hard same), Lawrence is an artist and educator, working in many disciplines like comics, music, illustration, and mixed media. His self-published graphic memoir, From Truth With Truth, was nominated for the Believer Book Awards, and the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics in 2020. Together, the three talk about Blackward, the choices that went into it, and what Lawrence is currently reading and recommending. Lawrence recommends: Bingo Love by Tee Franklin When Hazel Johnson and Mari McCray met at church bingo in 1963, it was love at first sight. Forced apart by their families and society, Hazel and Mari both married young men and had families. Decades later, now in their mid-'60s, Hazel and Mari reunite again at a church bingo hall. Realizing their love for each other is still alive, what these grandmothers do next takes absolute strength and courage. Mimosa by Archie Bongiovanni Best friends and chosen family Chris, Elise, Jo, and Alex work hard to keep themselves afloat. Their regular brunches hold them together even as the rest of their lives threaten to fall apart. In an effort to avoid being the oldest gays at the party, the crew decides to put on a new queer event called Grind–specifically for homos in their dirty thirties. Grind is a welcome distraction from their real problems: after a messy divorce, Chris adjusts to being a single parent while struggling to reconnect to their queer community. Elise is caught between feelings for her boss and the career of her dreams. Jo tries to navigate the murky boundaries of being a supportive friend and taking care of her own needs. And Alex is guarding a secret that might change his friendships forever. While navigating exes at work, physical and mental exhaustion, and drinking way, way too much on weekdays, this chosen family proves that being messy doesn't always go away with age. Happy Pride and happy (early) Juneteenth, dear listeners! On this episode, we decided to talk about a lovely, happy comic book titled, "Bingo Love" written by Tee Franklin, art by Jenn St-Onge, and colors by Joy San. This is the story of two Black women named Hazel (a.k.a. Elle) Johnson and Mari McCray who meet at church bingo in New Jersey as young girls in 1963. They go on to become best friends and fall in love, but are then torn apart by their families because their love is seen as forbidden. But this story—which spans more than 50 years—has a happy ending that celebrates love, joy, and freedom. We loved it and think you would too. Through those stories, we like to dissect the journey of our guests and present actionable lessons and advice for our listeners no matter what career or avenue of artistry they pursue. The guest for this episode is Canadian comic book artist/illustrator and self proclaimed "Bisexual Comics Cat Mom™", Jenn St-Onge. St-Onge is known for her work on series like Dynamite's Nancy Drew, IDW's Jem & The Misfits, and Image's Bingo Love, along with a selection of cover work for various comic book companies. During our chat, we talked about the projects she's worked on recently, where she found her artistic inspiration, striking out on her own to do freelance work, her mentors, the different facets of collaboration, the horror genre, and much more. Each episode, the guest is asked to suggest someone from their life/career that should be on Fresh is the Word that would have good stories to tell. St-Onge chose comic writers Kelly Thompson and Magdalene Visaggio, and her brother Jeff St-Onge. We've all been there - the fog of infatuation. How do we know when love is true or just lustful and new? Especially at the start of our sexual maturation? We discuss the science of new love in our latest episode and we use Tee Franklin & Jenn St-Onge's beautifully refreshing "Bingo Love" for our conversational framework. In the early 1960s, everyone expects Hazel & Mari to behave in a certain way and love a certain person. Familial and societal pressures often get the better of us, but that doesn't mean we have to deny our true selves forever. Sometimes we get a second chance. "Bingo Love" is about embracing that moment when it presents itself. As always, you can follow the podcast on Twitter @CBCCPodcast and you can follow our co-hosts Brad & Lisa at @MouthDork & @Sidewalksiren.
Just in time for Black History Month we read Bingo Love by Tee Franklin, Jenn St-Onge, Joy San, & Cardinal Rae Emitown by Emi Lenox Abbott by Saladin Ahmed, Sami Kivelä, & Jason Wordie Also in this episode: Umbrella Academy Chat Jess gets hyped for nothing Hallmark sex scenes Ashley questions the wisdom of divorce Old woman wants Portland youth off her lawn Panelists: Jamie(@thatcomicfan), Ashley(@sierradean), Scott(@goddamnitscott), Jess (@GeekyChicky87)
Colorists get a huge shout out in this episode of Comics! Stripped. We get two vibrant stories: one about a dysfunctional super family (Umbrella Academy Vol. 1) and another about two grandmas in love after decades apart (Bingo Love Vol. 1).
Bingo Love is a comic by Tee Franklin with art by Jenn St-Onge. It is a beautiful and sometimes tragic love story following two queer women of color. Bingo Love is a story about love, family, and aging. Bingo Love has humble beginnings as a kickstarter, but has received great reception and has been picked up by Image comics with more on the way. This week we bring you a special episode on our experience with Flame Con 2018 in NYC! We talk about our personal experiences with the world's largest LGBTQA+ convention and talk to some amazing comic book creators, artists, and curators! We start off talking about the troubles of finding a good "all purpose gay bar", the ways this con went out of it's way to be queer friendly, and our general impressions. We then follow up with interviews with Anne Ishii of Massive Goods where we talk about the importance of erotic art being culturally valued, we catch up with illustrator Shae Beagle of the image comic Moonstruck and discuss the importance of making queer content for future generations, and end with the talented and effortlessly charismatic Tee Franklin of Bingo Love and her upcoming series Jook Joint! Thank you to all the event organizers, artists, fans, and wonderfully queer individuals that filled our hearts with gay, gay love! Links below as to where you can buy things from these creators!!! Massive books, fashion, and more are sold here! Moonstruck can be bought here or wherever you buy comics. (follow Shae on Tumblr for more of their art) You can buy Tee Franklin's Bingo Love here or at your local comic shop as well! We are joined by Brittany Gregory to discuss the romantic independent comic from Tee Franklin, Bingo Love. It's a love story about two people torn apart by their families and society. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will warm your heart. Warning: This episode might bring you to tears. But like, in a good way?

This is our chattiest episode yet. Before we dig into our book talk, we find out the ending of #cockygate, fangirl over Beverly Jenkins tweets and do a quick survey of popular books we have — and haven’t — read. Don’t worry, we find time to discuss Bingo Love, by Tee Franklin, Jenn St-Onge and Joy San. ----more---- Pop in around the 40-minute mark to hear us analyze Elle and Hazel’s romance, as well as try and figure out what Jake’s big secret is. (Also, what’s going on with his wonky colored eyes???) It was a cute book that we wish we could have had more of. In other news, we’re getting close to our second birthday! We’re planning to celebrate with a nostalgic throwback read, so tweet us your favorite over at @blackchicklit. Thanks for listening and be sure to rate, review and subscribe to us on iTunes. And finally, thanks to Suite45 for our theme song, Jones’n.
Brian and John are excited to be back! It's been 1.5 months since we've heard from our heroes, and they've got some stories to tell. I thought to buy a few graphic novels at my nearest comic book shop. Midtown Comics in NYC by 40th st and 7th ave. was the place to go. The three books I purchased were Snotgirl volume one, Black Science volume one, and Bingo Love. Bingo Love was the slimmest of the three. The cover tells you it's a lesbian love story between two black women. On a recent Sunday night after work, I caught up on the most recent episodes of Ash Vs. Evil Dead and the Walking Dead. I didn't want to go to sleep with zombie images on my mind. I picked up this book and began reading it. Bingo Love had me quickly emotionally invested. Smiling, crying, laughing. All within a 40-minute read. What a beautiful love story. The comic book format is a fantastic medium to tell a(written)story you'd find in a traditional book. The main characters are Hazel and Mari. I found myself rooting for their forbidden love to be recognized. The art style is a mix between an anime style and the Scott Pilgrim comics. It fit the story well. I don't want to give away too much of the book's story but if you want a feel-good graphic novel? Bingo Love is it! Whatever author Tee Franklin does next, I'm in. I hope it's in a similar format. This weekend in Seattle's Convention Centre, ReedPOP's EMERALD CITY COMIC CON is attracting thousands of eager nerds and pop culture enthusiasts, along with some incredible Special Guests and Exhibitors. Joining them is AEISD's 'man on the ground' Dan Berry, who is holding a number of interviews over the course of the event. Here, Dan has the chance to get in a few words with Tee Franklin, in between her being mobbed by many fans and well-wishers of the hugely popular BINGO LOVE graphic novel which exploded over social media last year after a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign - the book, about the lives of two women, bonding at bingo, coming to terms with their sexuality and finding themselves after lives of conformity, struggle, love and loss, is a cracking piece of work, and has been picked up for mainstream release by Image Comics, Here Tee talks about the books genesis, her inspirations, her joy at the books success and what is next for upcoming projects. Thanks to Tee for her time, and thanks to Dan Berry for hosting the interview.

And this year, there are quite a number of new comics devoted to love and relationships...and with curious twists. And speaking of twists, they begin their show by discussing the first two issues of the new Image Comics series, Twisted Romance. This is a four-issue anthology published weekly throughout the month of February, and in issues #1 and #2 we see comics contributions from the creators Alex de Campo, Katie Shelly, Sarah Horrocks, Alejandra Gutierrez, and Meredith McClaren, with short prose offerings from Magen Cubed and Vita Ayala. From there they go to Death of Love #1 (Image Comics), written by Justin Jordan with art by Donal Delay. Much like Twisted Romance, this is a skewed look at love -- and this one includes assholes and drugs. Following that, Gene and Derek discuss one more recent release from Image Comics, Tee Franklin and Jenn St-onge's Bingo Love. This is a unique LGBT narrative that focuses on the relationship of older citizens. While intended for teen readers, this is a graphic novel that can be appreciated by all ages. After that they visit, once again, the wacky world of Craig Yoe and his partner Clizia Gussoni. Weird Love, Vol. 6: So This Is Love! (IDW Publishing/Yoe Books) is the latest collection of their Weird Love series, classic romance stories from the 1950s and 1960s that not only appear warped to our contemporary eyes, but were probably strange to their original audiences. And finally, the guys wrap up their special Valentine's Day episode with an offering from DC Comics, Young Monsters in Love. Much like last October's DC House of Horror, this is an extra-long seasonal anthology issue written and drawn by a who's who of DC creators. Included are stories focusing on, among others, Swamp Thing, Man-Bat, Raven, Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E., Solomon Grundy, Deadman, the Creature Commandos, and (one of the guys' favorites) Monsieur Mallah and the Brain. Love is definitely in the air this week!
Writer Tee Franklin joins Off Panel this week to talk her upcoming Image Comics graphic novella, Bingo Love. Franklin discusses her path into comics, her interest in writing comics before, figuring out how to write comics, the origins of Bingo Love, the impact of artist Jenn St. Onge, the Kickstarter experience, the downside of crowd-funding, what made Image the right fit for the comic, the importance of representation in comics, the marketing of independent comics, her personal and business mottos for 2018, and more.
