Alan Davis is one of the most consistent artists in the business. More than five decades into his career, the English cartoonist has worked with some of the biggest names in comics, among them Alan Moore and Chris Claremont, and drawn some of the most beloved characters, from Batman to the X-Men. Radio Rackham's Matthias Wivel caught up with him at the Copenhagen Comics Festival for a chat about his work and career. We discuss his beginnings on the British comics scene, notably his work with Moore and others on Captain Britain (1981-85), Dr & Quinch and Marvelman (1982-83). Davis brings to life that heady, innovative time of youthful enthusiasm and describes how much of it descended into ‘farce' because of personality clashes. Among the highlights of Davis's career in the United States, we have the story of how an editorial mandate over how to drawn Batman's gun caused him to quit the lucrative Batman: Year 2 (1986) after one issue. We hear how Claremont is “the most creative person” Davis ever worked with and he is mystified by our report that their joint work,Excalibur (1988-93), has become a something of a cult classic for its queer undertones and general horniness. We also discuss series such as ClanDestine (1994-95) , JLA: The Nail (1998) and Fantastic Four: The End (2007), all high points in Davis's career as a writer-artist. Overall, it is a portrait of a jobbing artist in the old school tradition, proud of his speed and ability to deliver on time, meek and drily humorous.

Another editorial powerhouse, Bob Schreck has been all over the comics industry for the better part of five decades! He started out organizing and running conventions for Creation Entertainment in the mid 70s, then worked in marketing for Marvel before taking the reins at Comico (with then-wife and past guest Diana Schutz as EIC). From there, it was on to Dark Horse, where Bob expanded from his marketing role into editorial, overseeing such titles as Frank Miller's Sin City, Art Adam's Monkeyman and O'Brien, and the influential anthology Dark Horse Presents. Soon after his Dark Horse stint, he co-founded Oni Press, where among other projects, brought filmmaker Kevin Smith into the comics world. Then it was on to DC, where Bob oversaw huge Batman storylines like Hush, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, and Batman: Year 100, as well as Green Lantern, Green Arrow, All-Star Superman, and Sweet Tooth (Vertigo). And he still wasn't done, working for IDW and Legendary Comics after that. But jeez, we've got to end this intro! You can follow Bob on Facebook._________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. This week, we're going back to the future, as the Dark Knight wages a crusade against a fascist police state in Paul Pope's Batman: Year 100. Released in 2006, Year 100 is a window into the anxieties of the Bush years, as well as a thrilling starting point for exploring urban legends, folk heroes, and cyberpunk as methods for resisting authoritarianism. Oh, and I work some Shakespeare in there, too. We have a Patreon! This week marks the 100th episode of Quarantined Comics — so we wanted something SO epic, but instead we just picked TWO comics with the number 100 in the titles: 100% + Batman Year 100 - by Eisner-award-winning wunderkind Paul Pope In 2006 - DC decided to tell yet another tale of Batman in a far off dystopian feature - with Batman Year 100. The year is 2039 in Gotham City, but NOT the Gotham we know and love from the mainstream DC Universe, but rather Paul Pope's universe of continuity from his hit series Heavy Liquid. The Batman, is but a a forgotten icon from the past, is wanted for the murder of a federal agent. Amid the chaos Gotham City Police Detective Gordon, grandson of the former commissioner, discovers that the man they are chasing shouldn't exist at all. And before that, 2002 - Paul Pope released 100% - re-visiting his same Heavy Liquid Universe of his previous work - in an alternate future New York. But gone are the criminal conspiracies — 100% simply focuses on the intertwining struggles and relationships of six characters — surrounding a seedy strip club, no holds bar boxing matches, and a manipulative art scene...with tea kettles? Across much of his indie, alternative work - also including books like Heavy Liquid and Battling Boy - Paul Pope has become known for a unique, emotionally charged style. His stories often present a futuristic world where everything is seedy, technology is ubiquitous, and privacy is pretty much a thing of the past Soooo...contemporary historical fiction

This week, BEFORE we risked life and lung to go see THE BATMAN on the big screen, we decided to read BATMAN IMPOSTER, written by Mattson Tomlin, and illustrated by Andrea Sorrentino. Tomlin happens to also be an (uncredited) screenwriter of the latest film, so it's an... interesting look into what feels like it could be in the same tonal universe but not quite. What feels like a Batman Year 1.5 story has Batman alone and at odds with his city, and the few people remaining in his personal circle. Gone is Alfred , and confronting him is Dr. Leslie Thompkins, the young doctor who cared for him after his parents were murdered. Also, Jim Gordon is swapped out for plucky Asian detective that Bruce has to collaborate with. Set atomic batteries to power, because this is a dark one... Special Guest: Paresh Jha.
In preparation for the upcoming The Batman movie. We review Batman Year one, the comic that inspired the movie.

Chris and Andy tackle one of the hardest topics in comic book lore… just what are the best Batman collected editions of all time? It’s not just what to decide it’s how to rank them. To make things easy the guys picked four obvious books to start: Batman: Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Time Sale Then the guys go back and forth on some essential books for you to read and own. Andy sticks to the comic books while Chris delves into a few history books and even the comic strips. Batman: Ego and Other Tales by Darwyn Cooke Batman: From the 30’s to the 70’s Batman: Hush by Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee Batman: Son of the Demon by Mike W. It’s our 100th episode! And as we do with every anniversary, we celebrate with Batman! This time it’s Batman: Year 100 by Paul Pope, a story that takes place in 2039...aka Batman's 100th year. Then we continue our read of Secret Wars with issue 10. Galactus may be defeated, but Doom's about to Doom. We also marked this momentous occasion the only way three nerds know how: by talking about more nerdy things. Here’s to 100 more! Next Time: Batman reaches his own anniversary with Detective Comics 1000 (out on store shelves today!) and we read the first appearance of Batman in Detective Comics 27 (May 1939)
After technical difficulties, and multiple attempts, we were able to get this episode recorded. The brothers welcomes our first guest and we all discuss our dislike for this book. We hope you enjoy!
We continue our last episode by finishing off the Kree Skrull War from Avengers 94-97. We’re not entirely sure when the war started, but we do know that a fake senator (alien in disguise!) is trying to take down the Avengers by making the public scared of aliens. Bad move, dude. And then the Inhumans show up? We're also nearing the end of Secret Wars with issue 9. Next Time: We celebrate our 100th episode with Batman: Year 100!
After having crept up in the last two episodes, Joe & Kendall decided it was time and dedicated an entire episode to Batman: Year two, the mysterious story that has been effectively purged from DC conscious, though not from DC history. Did you ever want to see Batman wield a pistol with malicious intent, engage in the world’s most awkward and forced relationship, and team up with Joe Chill all while trying to stop a Pirates of the Caribbean reject with the world’s most eye-rolling catchphrase? Yeah, us neither. Buckle up, Bat-Fanatics, this is a bumpy one. Plot Pandemonium: Batman: Year Two A.C.E. Character Corner - A Podcast on Your favorite Comic Book Characters
Kriss and Dpalm are back with another Character Corner episode. This time its Part 1 of a two part series on the Robins. We’ve covered most of the Robins already in previous episodes like Batman's Rogue Gallery, Tim Drake, all the Batgirl episodes and our three part Batman series. But we’ve never really dug deep into each of the Robins and gone into their differences and how they tell the larger story of Batman. We’re starting with Dick Grayson and Jason Todd not just because chronologically they were the first two robins but also because they represent the larger issues we’ve seen with Batman & DC Comics when they get translated to movies and TV. Everyone knows Dick Grayson is the first Robin but the reality is, by the time most of us were reading comics and aware of Batman, Grayson was far removed from being Robin. Same could be said for Jason Todd. Jason was first introduced in 1983 and was killed off in 1988. The first two Robins came and went before most people today were even 10. And that’s where we see DC getting into trouble. The mantle of Robin is almost just as important and divisive as Batman. There isn't another sidekick character in which you have 4-5 drastically different character holding the title and all of them are just about important. Dick, Jason, Tim/Stephanie and Damien. We’re gonna go through each Robin and talk not just about some of their key issues but really dive into how they’re different from each other, and the role they play in Bruce/Batman’s life. First up...the heir & the prodigal son: Richard & Jason. Key Issues: First Appearances Detective Comics #38 - First appearance of Dick Grayson/Robin Tales of the Teen Titans #44 - First appearance of Dick Grayson as Nightwing Batman #357 - First appearance of Jason Todd (Pre-Crisis) Batman #366 - First appearance of Jason Todd as Robin (Pre-Crisis) Early Years Batman Year 3 Batman #436 - 439 Batman Chronicles: The Gauntlet - Dick's final test from Batman Robin Year 1 - Chuck Dixen and goes really well with his Batgirl Year One book Dark Victory - Sequel to The Long Halloween and retells the origin of Dick Grayson Enter Jason Todd Batman #408 - First appearance of Post-Crisis Jason Todd Batman #410 - Post-Crisis Todd's first appearance as Robin New Teen Titans vol 2 #20 Nightwing Year One Batman #416 - Jason & Dick meet for the first time; Bruce admits to why he replaced Grayson Death of Jason Todd Batman #422 Batman #424 - Does Jason kill Garzonas or not? This episode features Batman Year 100 by Paul Pope. In addition to gushing over Pope's art, we also discuss the ambiguity of the story and some of the politics that make up the foundation of the book, as well as the many ways it deviates from a traditional Batman story and why some fans might dislike it. Well it had been brought to my attention that the first episode had become unavailable. While I'm busy working on some stuff behind the scenes I thought I would take this opportunity to repost the original episode so anyone who has missed it will have a chance to give it a listen. Just a note this version of the episode has the same amature audio editing as the original post so just be warned. I've come a long way since then. Written By: Frank Miller Logline: A reiimagining of the classic graphic novel, Batman Year one chronicles the journey of Bruce Wayne from poor mechanic, to billionaire vigilante. It’s our 3-year anniversary, so we had to continue the tradition by reading Batman: Year 3 from 1989 by Marv Wolfman with art by Pat Broderick. No really, we had to, we’re thankful there’s no Year Four. Originally from issues 436-439, it appears to be a story retelling Robin’s origin. And then they pasted the “Year Three” title on it. Then they changed “Three” to a "3" for some reason. Look, we don’t know. Next Time - Annihilation: Conquest

It’s our 2nd year anniversary! So of course we had to keep the tradition alive and read Batman: Year Two from the late 80s, a shameless excuse to capitalize on Frank Miller’s iconic Year One. Miller wasn’t even involved, but you’ll still see Todd McFarlane first work for DC! That’s… something. We’ll also try to figure out why Batman would team up with the killer of his parents and why Jim Gordon has turned into a complete idiot.
In The Smurfs Christmas Special, Will tries to make some Smurfing sense of a wholly nonsensical plot. Then Dan and Mike try to make sense of Batman: Year Two. All around, there's little success.

Special guest Scott Snyder (Batman, The Wake, Superman Unchained) joins Paul Montgomery to discuss Paul Pope's criminally under-appreciated Batman: Year 100. Here, the man beneath the cowl is both mythic and utterly human, an enigmatic soul dedicated to a safeguarding tomorrow's Gotham. Why does Snyder rank the work as of his top five favorite Batman stories? How does it continue to influence his own work? All that and heaps more Batman. Learn more about your ad choices.
