I'm certified with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and brain spotting. I love those, but I also help people with sleep. (45:10) • In my work, folks experience things and see things that we should not be asking normal human beings to see. (47:04) • [Marcus] When you're doing your job and you're runnin' and gunnin' - no matter what it is - and it tarts creeping into your dreams, that means your database is full. (50:25) • Taking time to reflect either alone or with someone you trust: How is this impacting me? What's happening? (51:36) • I have a book coming out on sleep coming out on sleep. It's called The Sleep Advantage. (56:02) • If you're really getting good sleep, it can impact your decision-making, and your reaction time. The episode explores the concept of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in law enforcement and the prevalence of PTSD symptoms among LEOs. The host introduces cognitive processing therapy (CPT) as a potential approach to address the negative beliefs and hypervigilance associated with trauma exposure. In this detailed and important conversation with Dave Emerson, the man who coined the term trauma-sensitive yoga, we get insights into Dave's extensive research on the impacts of trauma-informed yoga for survivors including his most recent paper comparing trauma-sensitive yoga and cognitive processing therapy. We explore the difference between Complex Trauma and PTSD and the implications of those differences on survivor validation and services. We discuss the harmful power dynamics that occur within abusive relationships and the importance of healthy interpersonal encounters in yoga spaces which propose to heal trauma adaptations. Dave shares why yoga is one of, if not the strongest embodied practice for healing the impacts of trauma and just how much of this style of practice is needed as well as other deep insights from his work and what he's learned about research and forming research studies for yoga claims.  Dave Emerson (he/him/his) is the founder of Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) for the Justice Resource Institute in Massachusetts, where he coined the term “trauma-sensitive yoga”. from 2009-2011 he was responsible for curriculum development, supervision, and oversight of the yoga intervention component of the first-of-its-kind, NIH-funded study to assess the utility of yoga for survivors of trauma. Dave has developed, conducted, and supervised TCTSY groups for rape crisis centers, domestic violence programs, residential programs for youth, active duty military personnel, survivors of terrorism, and Veterans Administration centers and clinics, and more. He is the co-author of Overcoming Trauma through Yoga, released in 2011 by North Atlantic Books, and Author of, Trauma-Sensitive Yoga in Therapy (Norton, 2015). In 2018, Dave Emerson co-founded the Center for Trauma and Embodiment at JRI. What if you could successfully treat PTSD in 2 weeks instead of 12? Massed delivery of PTSD treatments such as Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure are gaining empirical support. But how does it work and could you offer it to your patients? Our guest in this episode is at the forefront of research answering these questions. We're joined by Dr. Cynthia Yamokoski, the Associate Director of the PTSD Mentoring Program at the National Center for PTSD. She shares the benefits and challenges of massed treatment for PTSD and provides suggestions for how to get started in your clinical practice. Of course, she also shares her “EBP Confession,” describing how she let her EBP pendulum swing too far. Just about everyone in the world has experienced something that can be characterized as a trauma. Humans are resilient, and most people recover on their own and function well. Some continue to be affected by trauma long after the fact, and it is not always easy to identify who that may be and how a history of adversity may impact our interactions. There is a difference between trauma-specific care (such as Cognitive Processing Therapy or Prolonged Exposure therapy) and trauma-informed care. Join us and our amazing guest, Dr. Lydia Bartholow, as we discuss trauma-informed care and how we can reorient from a “What's wrong with you?” to a “What happened to you?” approach and implement psychological “universal precautions” to transform our systems to acknowledge a history of adversity.Lydia Bartholow, DNP, PMHNP, CARN-AP, is a doctorally prepared psychiatric nurse practitioner specializing in addiction medicine and trauma-informed care. When Patricia Resick, Ph.D., became involved with the first-ever crisis center for sexual assault victims in 1974, she found that the psychology field was severely lacking valid answers for how these women responded to the trauma they faced. After years of research and development towards a process that would help survivors of sexual abuse, survivors of domestic violence and veterans, she solidified a therapy that changed the course of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment for good: cognitive processing therapy (CPT).This episode of Menninger Clinic's Mind Dive Podcast features Dr. Resick, accomplished psychologist, author and developer of CPT joining hosts Dr. Kerry Horrell  and Dr. Bob Boland for a conversation on how CPT became a first-line therapy for PTSD, the fundamentals of treatment, and how to approach it within comorbidities. Dr. Resick is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center and Adjunct Professor at Medical University of South Carolina. She is the co-author of newly published self-help book, “Getting Unstuck from PTSD: Using Cognitive Processing Therapy to Guide Your Recovery.” “The vast majority of people will recover from a trauma, but for some, something was interfering with their natural recovery,” said Dr. Resick. “They haven't let themselves feel the feelings and think about the trauma differently and they feel they're just running in a circle. CPT addresses the ‘getting stuck' feeling.” Follow The Menninger Clinic on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to never miss an episode of Mind Dive. Any guide to “small talk” will tell you that there are just some topics that you shouldn't broach in most social situations. One of those topics is spirituality. But should spirituality be taboo in psychotherapy? Does the direct discussion of spirituality have a place inside evidence-based practice? In this episode, Andy, Kevin, and Jenna chat about some practical ways to answer these questions and offer ideas for “going there” when spirituality might be a useful domain to explore with your clients. Andrew Santanello, Psy.D s a licensed, clinical psychologist. Dr. Santanello worked in the Department of Veterans Affairs as a PTSD specialist for over a decade before moving to his current position as a Military Behavioral Health Psychologist, PTSD subject matter expert, and National Cognitive Processing Therapy trainer at the Center for Deployment Psychology.Although Dr. Santanello has extensive expertise with "second-wave" CBT interventions such as CBT-D, Prolonged Exposure Therapy, and Cognitive Processing Therapy, his passion for "third-wave" behavioral interventions, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, is a common thread throughout his professional career. His professional interests include dissemination and practice of Evidence-Based Psychotherapy with an increasing focus on mechanisms of change and process-based psychotherapy, psychological resilience, and the intersection of behavioral science and mindfulness-based approaches to alleviating human suffering. In addition to his work with the CDP, Dr. Santanello is an active member in the Military Special Interest Group and Mid-Atlantic Chapter (MAC) of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS) and maintains a small private practice in Baltimore, MD.Resources mentioned in this episode: (Didn't mention this specifically in the episode, but I think that it is worth including. "It's about these little moments and choices. It's about once again, again, and again, and again, noticing where we're at and choosing to meet our own needs." Jemma Schwartz, psychotherapist and yoga instructor, joins Courtney on the show to discuss how our nervous systems and emotions become dysregulated, and what we can do about it! Jemma's work focuses on the mind-body connection and the role of movement in helping to alleviate distressing emotions and nervous system activation. We are, in many ways, delicately attuned creatures, and we live in a world that frequently results in prolonged exposure to provocative stimuli. Jemma's work, and explanations here, help us learn to recognize and compassionately respond to this activation thoughtfully and physically. It's a tough world out there, kids, and Jemma's helping us all move through it with increased ease. About our guest, from Jemma: I am a licensed clinical social worker and registered yoga instructor. I graduated with a BS in Psychology and Disaster Studies in 2006 from SUNY New Paltz, then completed the Master's in Social Welfare program in 2012 at the University at Albany. I have gained rich experiences working in mental health clinics, home visiting programs and doctors offices, lending me to be skilled in treating clients with a wide age range and need in areas of mental health, substance use, maternal mental health, and chronic illness management. I promote healing by tailoring interventions to the person sitting in front of me and the moment they are in. Through skilled and compassionate interventions, I aim to assist people in increasing self awareness of their thoughts, emotions and physical experiences. My passion centers around using the body to heal the mind. Such practices increase internal awareness, decrease stress, shift unhelpful patterns, and ultimately promote empowerment and wellness so that you can be the version of yourself you want to be in the world. I am trained to offer you Accelerated Resolution Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Open Dialogue, Motivational Interviewing, Problem Solving Therapy, and Mindfulness modalities. As a hungry life time learner, I earned my 200 hour yoga teacher certification in 2019 at The Living Seed after years of personal practice. As of 2021 I am a Licensed TIYT Clinical Facilitator with Sundara Therapy, offering their brilliant Overcome Anxiety Clinic. I am also a trained doula and have been blessed by being able to assist four mama's in bringing their little ones into the world. My self care bag of tricks include spending purposeful time with husband, daughter & loved ones, my rescue pups Rubah and Rylee, practicing yoga and meditation, day dreaming about travel, traveling, music and cooking. — Have you thought about meeting your therapist outdoors and walk together while the therapeutic processes unfold? If not, it's time for an added natural healing component! Nature! This is not a new practice method. In fact, it is a very ancient concept. Aristotle and Socrates famously walked during lectures. Sigmund Freud often walked with patients during the analysis process. Although it is unknown why this form of teaching and therapy fell out of fashion, it is finally seeing a resurgence in popularity and utility. Not only do we have increasing evidence of the effectiveness of walking with your therapist, there are many practical reasons that this form of therapy may be right for you. Exercising, especially walking, provides well-established cardiovascular benefits and the incorporation of movement with the therapeutic conversation increases the integrative capacity of each therapy session. In other words, moving while talking makes short work of problem solving, gaining insight, and making positive changes in your life! Valeria interviews Layla Niemann  — She is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with Waypoint Wellness Center located in Huntsville, Alabama.  She earned her MSW at Alabama A & M University. Since starting out in the Social Services field in 2001, she has worked in the areas of Child Welfare, Child Forensic Interviewing, Hospice, Bereavement, Adoptions, and Geriatrics. Ms. Niemann enjoys weaving her myriad experiences into her clinical practice serving adults and children with special interest in PTSD, OCD, ADHD, Autism, and Sleep Disorders. Her approach is rooted in the belief that positive therapeutic relationships have the power to change individuals and the world around them. Ms. Niemann works diligently for racial and gender equality in her professional and personal life. She is a strong ally for LGBTQ+ individuals. She provides an affirmative approach and utilizes empowerment strategies throughout treatment. She is also a neurodiversity-affirmative therapist. Ms. Niemann is nationally certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. She is trained in multiple therapy modalities including CBT, mindfulness, and Cognitive Processing Therapy, among others. Ms. Niemann believes the power of movement and the outdoors to be profoundly healing. The bilateral movement of walking is particularly useful combined with therapeutic conversation. This approach is a wonderful way to fastrack problem-solving, getting unstuck, or working through a complex personal problem. She began to notice the benefit of walking with her clients when working in assisted living facilities and skilled nursing homes. She has now expanded this practice to walking with clients in her private practice. Ms. Niemann enjoys spending time in the outdoors with her family, fostering with Huntsville Animal Services, playing music, backpacking, and running. To learn more about Layla Niemann and her work, please visit: waypointwellness.net           — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. We're digging into how EMDR can help improve pregnancy success. The fertility journey can be filled with triggers, heartbreak and frustration. A theme we see with couples on the fertility journey is trauma. We often see childhood trauma (i.e. physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect. emotional neglect. mental illness, divorce and substance abuse). We especially see the trauma that results from the fertility diagnosis and visualizing a different path to parenthood. This can result in unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships and physical symptoms such as nausea or headaches. That's why I'm including a referral partner for EMDR as part of our Fab Fertile Method.
