David Stearns discussed the Mets' trade deadline moves, highlighted by the acquisition of Cedric Mullins to bolster defense, baserunning, and lineup balance. He explained the decision to prioritize bullpen upgrades, landing Taylor Rogers and Ryan Helsley, while keeping top prospects in the system. Stearns outlined how the roster mix will work with Jeff McNeil, Ronny Mauricio, Brett Baty, and other young infielders sharing time. He emphasized flexibility over reacting to other contenders' moves, valued recent player development progress, and explained the rationale for trading prospects like Drew Gilbert and Blade Tidwell in win-now deals. Injury updates were provided on Jesse Winker and José Siri, with Winker unlikely to return before September. Stearns reiterated his belief in sustained competitiveness rather than a short “window” and acknowledged the challenge of balancing development with competing for a playoff spot. Ben and Carlos talk about the week's Hall of Fame results and debate the various cases for some of the players who were on this year's ballot before looking ahead to future candidates and looking at the surprisingly strong track record of No. 1 overall picks making the Hall of Fame. After that the two open up the listener mailbag and get into your prospect questions. Those involve plenty of topics including: are the Padres too trade-happy with their prospects? Is Coby Mayo more valuable for the Orioles as trade bait or as a member of the young hitting core? How would Samuel Basallo look as a prospect if he was being developed by another organization? Who will be the fastest pitcher to the big leagues from the 2024 draft class? Where do we stand on Mets righthander Blade Tidwell? How does Ben evaluate the Giants' current standing in the international market? How much upside can we expect for Marlins prep pitchers Noble Meyer and Thomas White? –Do you have a question you want us to answer? Connor Rogers and Joe DeMayo are back with another episode of The Mets Pod presented by Tri-State Cadillac, as the Mets look to fill their present bullpen and look to build their future starting rotation. Connor and Joe explore the current free agent market for relief pitchers that can help the team in 2024, including Hector Neris, Adam Ottavino, and others that are still out there to be signed. Later, the guys go down on the farm for a long-term look at the future of the Mets starting rotation by talking about the development of prospects like Blade Tidwell, Tyler Stuart, Dom Hamel, Justin Jarvis, and Calvin Ziegler. Connor and Joe also go down the designated hitter rabbit hole once again, chatting up the DH options in free agency (hello again Jorge Soler, Rhys Hoskins how are you?) and also wonder if the Mets just plan to roll with Mark Vientos instead. Finally, the show jumps into the Mailbag for questions about City Connect jerseys, faith in prospects Christian Scott and Mike Vasil, and which of the present members of the starting rotation will potentially be part of future starting staffs.
