Episode 169:In this week's episode, I sit down to talk to Maria Mercedes Blandon, Co-Owner of Stemma Craft Coffee in Downtown Orlando. She shares her story of loss, grief and how the painful moments in her life led her to continue her husbands legacy. She began her journey in the industry hand in hand with her beloved husband, Alvaro Blandon. His love and devotion for coffee immediately captivated her. Together they traveled and discovered all the wonders behind the small roasted seeds. Their passion grew just as a fruitful tree full of coffee berries. For several years they worked together at the Hacienda. Although Alvaro's primary occupation was dentistry, he never missed an opportunity to get involved in the harvest. He always helped the great family that runs the Hacienda “La Misericordia” together with the Blandon family. After the loss of her husband, she decided to continue the family legacy with her daughter. Determined to enter the sector and hit the ground running, just as her husband would have, she obtained her import license to introduce their coffee in the United States. Thanks to this, she created contacts in the industry and began selling her own coffee. Host Chad Hughes welcomes Blandon Granger, Supervisor of Real Estate Services for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), to the show. Blandon has been in the energy industry at SMUD for the past seventeen years and supervises asset management and complex acquisitions. He talks with Chad about the impacts of EV charging and urban development on his role. Blandon explains that SMUD has a “very aggressive” zero carbon plan and by 2030 wants all their energy to be from clean sources. He talks about how SMUD approaches that goal by developing themselves as well as partnering with developers with similar goals. Renewable energy and green initiative projects come with their own challenges that Blandon describes for Chad.Chad and Blandon discuss how the real estate development deals are made, how SMUD is a public agency with an elected board of directors, how the green energy shift comes with decarbonization and the impacts of urban and residential growth on how his department operates. EV charging especially has come with its own challenges and Blandon addresses this and more with Chad in this eye-opening interview. “So, you know, a big concern, I think, anywhere is wiping out [agriculture] lands for these solar projects. Agriculture is a big customer for us. I mean, you know, we've got agricultural customers, it's a part of our heritage in the valley here. I don't think SMUD really wants to be going out there and just decimating significant farmlands and so forth. So the thought is you would bring in compatible type of AG uses. So what we've seen so far is mainly grazing. Sheep are great. They don't bother or destroy the facilities.” - Blandon GrangerAbout Blandon Granger:At SMUD, Blandon Granger manages all real estate activities of the nation's sixth-largest publicly owned electric utility. With an annual budget of $1.6 billion, SMUD is a leader in renewable technologies and developing energy projects. Blandon's group provides services for acquisition, management and disposition of all land rights necessary to operate an electrical utility with generation, transmission, distribution, retail, and administrative facilities. Blandon has also served on the City of Roseville Public Utilities Commission since 2012 and is responsible to the city council for recommendations on policies concerning evaluation, operations, and compliance with state and federal rules and regulations relating to the city's utilities within the city limits. Blandon has achieved the International Right of Way Association's (IRWA) Senior Agent (SR/WA) designation and serves on IRWA's International Electric and Utilities Committee and is the past chair of the Asset Management Committee. ---Chad Hughes | CEO, Entrepreneurial Leader, Author: website |linkedinBlandon Granger | Supervisor of Real Estate Services at SMUD: website | linkedin

In Episode 12 of the Echo Ever Proudly podcast, our main guest is author, researcher and award-winning documentary producer, Luis Blandon '81. What was life like for post-war D.C. residents in the Fall of ’45? Blandon shares his well-researched details. And give us the backstory of the '43 game that Gonzaga lost 12-6. And just how different two years made, socially. As Gonzaga celebrates its Bicentennial, the Gonzaga vs. Boys Town game, 76 years ago this week, is one of the more admirable moments for the school. Not just for what was on the scoreboard at the end of the game, but for the social significance of just playing it. And the changes it may have inspired. A quick anecdote from Randy Kozik tells how his dad, the late Joe Kozik, got some scouting help, from a name you may have heard of, Coach Bear Bryant, the Maryland Terrapins coach in 1945. Luis adds some great thoughts for young students who may be interested in history, and shares memories of his two favorite history teachers. It is Thanksgiving week, a special one for Gonzaga historically, with the annual Alumni Smoker on Wednesday night. Some may be listening on your Uber ride home. Lately the tradition of athletic alumni gatherings this week has grown to include a hockey alumni game on Wednesdays before the Smoker. The Gonzaga Crew alumni will row on Saturday the 27th @11:00a at Anacostia Community Boathouse, 1900 M Street SE, Washington D.C. At the end of this episode we visit with Gonzaga Rugby icon Lee Kelly, and Gonzaga Head Football coach Randy Trivers. On Buchanan Field Friday November 26th the Rugby Alumni Touch Tournament registration starts @9:30am. Later in the afternoon the Football Alumni game registration/warm ups begin @4:00p Game starts @4:30. Followed at 5:30p by a group photo and comments from Coach Trivers, food and fellowship on the Alumni Pavilion (outdoor venue) afterwards. ---- As mentioned, send us your holiday shout out! For our Christmas week episode, we want to include your voices sharing Christmas greetings. On this episode of the Next Round On Me podcast, Bravo talks about the highly anticipated fight between the greatest boxer of all time, Canelo Alvarez, and a pretty good, but not good enough boxer to beat the GOAT (Canelo), Caleb Plant. He then dives into the movie industry with an actual movie analyst and co-host, Blandon. He also talks about the Henry Ruggs incident that happened last week. This episode is all over the place, please excuse the audio and background noise. Thank you for listening to this episode you legend.
On this episode of the Next Round On Me podcast, Bravo continues the legacy of the podcast. Without the help and encouragement of Dan and Blandon, this boy tries to fill in all 3 spots of the table, and he does a pretty good job (sort of). Don't mind the background noise, it's bad but its still lit.
