As a boy, I was hockey obsessed and growing up in Goderich meant I had access every year to the grand-daddy of all hockey tournaments. Young Canada Week began in 1950 as a one-day, 12-team competition for peewee age players and over the years it grew into an exciting and important part of the fabric of Goderich and area. It would go on to draw players like: Paul Henderson, Darryl Sittler, Brad Park, Ron Ellis, Goderich's own Larry Jeffrey and Gary Doak and yes, Wayne Gretzky ... and many more. On this episode, Lion's Club member, former teacher & coach Richard Madge will join us along with one of my oldest friends, Rob Bundy to chat about the tourney's humble beginnings, it's rise to become one of the most famous tournaments in the world, the push to stay relevant in an ever changing world and some of our own special memories and brushes with hockey fame.

Brad Park has been voted one of the 50 best hockey players of all time. The nine-time All-Star finished second of the Norris Trophy, awarded to the NHL's best defensemen, a record six times, thanks to his one mistake: being born the same year as Bobby Orr, considered the best defenseman of all time. Here he talks about Team Canada coach Harry Sinden, who led the country's first “Dream Team” of NHL All-Stars against the Soviet Union in the 1972 Summit Series.Team Canada was supposed to win every game, but after winning just one game in the first five, plus a tie, Team Canada had to win all three games in Moscow. “We weren't in the kind of shape they were, they played a style of hockey we'd never seen before, and we didn't take them seriously – at first!” Park recalls. But Team Canada discovered they had certain advantages, too: led by Sinden, they were smart enough to adjust, they knew how to handle a long series – unlike the Soviets -- and they created a team spirit where none had existed before during a two-game layover in Sweden, on the way to Moscow. They also had their country behind them. More Canadians watched the last three games in Moscow than the moon landing three years earlier. As Wayne Gretzky told me, “This was more important!Under unprecedented pressure, and with Bobby Orr out with a bad knee for the entire series, Brad Park played some of the best hockey of his life, and Team Canada actually did win all three games, each by a goal, including Paul Henderson's famous game winner with 34 seconds left in the final game.“We learned humility and respect, and how to rely on each other,” Park recalls. “Hey, when it's you against the world, you gotta come together! I'll never forget it – and no one else will, either.”About our Host:For info about the book or this podcast please visit our website:http://www.letthemleadbybacon.comhttp://www.johnubacon.comYou can connect with John via these platforms:https://www.facebook.com/johnubaconhttps://twitter.com/Johnubacon

On this episode we chat with Danceland, an Americana Jam band based out of Toronto, Canada. The group recently released their debut album ‘Pink Lem'. Rooted in the timeless psychedelic Americana tradition, complete with storyteller song-craft; sunny harmonies; lonesome pedal steel; stratospheric lead guitar passages; and a touch of Eastern mysticism. The 7-track album was mixed by Grammy award-winning engineer Gregg Rubin (The Avett Brothers, Harry Connick, Ben Folds). Additional PRESS ‘Pink Lem' is the culmination of a long, strange trip for the group. The band's founding guitarist and singer-songwriter, Joe Ferland, came up as a musician in the 1990s New York City music scene, playing in a variety of rock and pop-punk contexts, and earning a few record deals along the way. Eventually, the music biz hustle burned him out, but music came back into his life during the passing of his mother when he and his wife—his co-writer and co-vocalist Jale—found their way to Danceland. Comprised of the core trio of Joe, Jale, and drummer Brad Park, the band operates with an open door policy in terms of keyboard players and bassists. Initially Danceland was conceived as Cherry Garcia Band, a project performing imaginative versions of Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band tunes, but has evolved to be much more. Jeremy has done the PTC four times now with 2018, 2019, 2020, and now 2022. Shawn is new into the ultra-running scene with this being his first trip to the PTC! Shawn has gone from 446lbs to ultra-runner! With an event like this, there are so many people in the community that a play a role into getting wheels moving and making the race the success it is. Folks like your Race Directors Kelley Hewett and Luis Gomez. Then you've got Brad Park, David Whiteside, Carrie Graves, Susan Murphy, Jeff Iosa, Sonja Craparo, and Staci Guten. All of the volunteers and local organizations from the eight aid stations, bib pick-up, the starting line, and the finish! Tonya Olson was your Medical Director; she's been saving feet at the Western States 100 for many years and was out at the Skunk Ape Night Run! The Pinellas is an Ultramarathon that runs the Pinellas Trail. The race is an out and back event that starts in St. Petersburg, Florida takes you to Tarpon Springs and then back to Dunedin. The length of the race is measured at just over 46 miles! The history of the Pinellas Trail goes back to Florida Railroad boom. The Atlantic Coast Line and the Seaboard Air Line railroads both served St. Petersburg and Clearwater for many years. They merged in 1967 to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. After the SCL joined CSX Transportation in the 1980s, 34 miles of trackage in Pinellas County was abandoned, and purchased by the Florida Department of Transportation. After voter approval, the County acquired the property and began construction of what is now the beautiful Pinellas Trail.

"Henderson has scored for Canada."Those five words, spoken by radio and TV legend Foster Hewitt, had me and five friends jumping up and down all over my parent's house on September 28, 1972. We had just witnessed history as Team Canada came back to defeat The U.S.S.R. in an eight game hockey summit series that put the Cold War on Ice.This episode, I speak with author, sports commentator and former Toronto Sun colleague Scott Morrison. His new book, "1972: The Series That Changed Hockey Forever," is the A-Z on a dramatic and unforgettable event. Scott spoke with several hockey heroes, including Phil Esposito (who wrote the forward to the book), Paul Henderson, Brad Park, Bobby Clarke, Ken Dryden, Yvan Cournoyer, Ron Ellis and others and answers every lingering question -- including whether or not Pat Stapleton smuggled the winning puck out of Moscow.   Come back to September of 1972 in this conversation steeped in nostalgia -- not just for the days of a 14-team NHL but for a nation and a culture where colour TV was still a novelty and bitcoins was what you did to see if coins were real.

A nostalgic look back at our favorite hockey hero's who wore the red, white and blue for the Rangers during the 1960's,70's and 80's. In episode number 39 we discuss the Rangers quick "play in " exit losing to the Hurricanes as well as the excitement surrounding "winning" the draft lottery and the impact that presumptive first overall pick Alexis La freniere will make on the club. We then segway to our main topic and revisit the epic 1973-74 Stanley Cup semi-finals between the Rangers and the Flyers. * What do Rangers fans and management take away from the rangers disappointing "play in" exit vs Carolina ? Is this team built physically and mentally for the rigors of the NHL Playoffs ? * Why did Quinn deviate from his regular season rotation and play Lundqvist over Georgiev after Shesterkin was deemed unfit to play ? *Will Lafreniere leap ahead of Brad Park and turn out to be the greatest Rangers player drafted when his career is all said and done? Will Lafreniere provide the grit, muscle, leadership and elite offensive talent so lacking amongst Rangers forwards. * The 1973-74 Flyers nicknamed the " Broad Street Bullies" were   a young , hungry,  intimidating and skilled team committed to initiating withering and relentless physical punishment on the opposition. *The Rangers were an established and veteran club anxious to rebound from a subpar regular season yet confident after beating the defending Stanley Cup Champion Canadiens in the previous round. * Dave Schultz mentioned before the clubs met that he preferred to play the Rangers because of their history of choking in the playoffs. * The Flyers physically dominated the first two games in Philadelphia  with Rick MacLeish, Ross Lonsberry and Bernie Parent the stars. * The Rangers rebounded in games 3 and 4 despite the Flyers taking an early 2-0 lead in Game 3. Brad Park and Rod Gilbert were the stars for the Rangers with Gilbert scoring one of the greatest OT goals in Rangers history in Game 4 evening up the series at 2.  * MacLeish dominated for the Flyers in their game 5 win at home while Park, Vickers and Gilbert did the same for the Rangers in their game 6 win at home forcing a deciding game 7 in Philadelphia. *In the most humiliating game 7 loss in franchise history and possibly in all of NY Sports history the Rangers lost 4-3 and earned the distinction of being the first original six franchise to lose to an expansion team during the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Rangers were physically punished ( with Dale Rolfe pummeled by Dave Shultz and the Rangers defenseman unable to protect Eddie Giacomin and keep the physical Flyers forwards from crashing the net down low leading to two goals by Dornhoefer, Kindrachuck and MacLeish) played sloppy defense in front of Giacomin and most egregiously of all  captain Vic Hadfield caught laughing in the penalty box to end the game and the season for the Rangers due to a too many men on the ice penalty.  * The Flyers went on to beat the Boston Bruins in the finals to capture the franchises first of two consecutive Stanley Cups.

Over that time, he scored 391 and assisted on 469 for 860 points. Dean scored 20 or more goals with all five teams he played for and appeared in five NHL All Star games.  He was a second team NHL All Star in 1959-60 after  scoring a career-high 32 goals with the Rangers. While with the North Stars, Dean was one of the first NHL players to publicly commit his life to Christianity and he and his wife, June, continued to be ambassadors for Christianity long after Dean's playing career ended. In addition, I'll review the recent weekend Alumni series between the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers — a home-and-home battle that featured six Hockey Hall of Famers.  I was there for all of it, and I thought you might want to hear some of the behind-the-scenes insights from a great weekend of classic hockey.
