Sunday Evening March 5, 2023 Brother Jack Andrews
Thank you Brother Jack for your Godly influence on my family. Thank you for sharing Jesus with my family and asking us to come to church. By your love and faithfulness, you have proven that you are, “A man after God's own heart”.
Brother Jack McDuff is one of the most celebrated jazz organists in music history, but few music fans are aware of his deep connection to Naptown. This week we’ll explore McDuff’s work on the Avenue.
Annie Bartosz still considers her brother Jack, who passed away from Neuroblastoma in 2012 to be one of her best friends as he looks down on her from above. Annie will talk about Jack, and her father John who passed away from the late effects of the cancer that he had as a young adult. Now a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania and hoping to eventually start a career in Pediatric Oncology, Annie will also discuss her role as an advocate for Pediatric Cancer, which began when she was 11 years old.
So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives. And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God. (1 Samuel 30:3,6) 8 Here sometime ago down in Louisiana, Brother Moore, here on the platform, and I, we were going down, way down to some little city, to a little church, and have a meeting. And his beloved daughter, and wife, and all of them was along. And I was—had my suitcase that some folks give me many, many years ago, over in California, and I'd just bought me a new suit. I had it in the suitcase, and had an old one on. And he had it laying on top of his car, driving fast down through Louisiana. All at once, when we got down there, we found out the suitcase wasn't on top; it was gone. I didn't even have a pocket handkerchief. So he was very much discouraged. I said, “Oh, the Lord will take care of that.” All my wardrobe, complete, was in it, besides my overalls, at home. So, he said, “Brother Branham, I'm going out and buy you a new suit.” I said, “No, it's all right.” He said, “You haven't got a chance, Brother Branham,” said, “that was lost way up, along the road there,” and said, “just… lot's of colored people live up through this way.” And said, “Now, the first thing,” said, if some man come along the road and he found the suitcase…” I said, “My Bible is in there, had my name in it.” He said, “Well, if he found that suitcase, Brother Branham,” said, “the thing he'd do, is sell those suits,” and so forth like that. I said, “Well, maybe he needs it worse that I do. 'Cause the Lord gave them to me, so maybe he needs them worse; the Lord's giving them to him.” He said, “Well, and if he found my Bible, and if he knew me,” I said, “he'd bring it back anyhow.” He said, “Oh, no, Brother Branham,” said, “if a sinner finds it,” said, “he will sell the clothes.” and said, “If a Christian finds it, they'll cut those suits up, and sent them to one another for prayer clothes.” Said, “You haven't got a chance.” So I said, “Well, we'll just trust the Lord.” 9 Two days past, and Brother Brown, over there, he said, “I want in on this too. I want you—I absolutely want to get you some new suits.” I said, “No, the Lord will bring them back somehow.” So we… Two or three days past; he said, “You see,” said, “we met a police down there, and the police said, ‘Sure, I'll—I'll go up the road looking for it.' (His mother had been healed in my meetings), he said, ‘Certainly.'” One of the state police, and we'd told him we lost the suitcase up there, way up in the swamps somewhere, oh, maybe a hu—two hundred miles, three hundred, up and down the road. So then the next day, we went over, and Brother Jack was just persistent that I was going to get a suit of clothes anyhow. Said, “Boy, a thousand miles from home, no clothes at home, and none here.” Said, “My, what are you going to do without even a handkerchief or a clean shirt?” Said, “Well, the Lord will take care of that.” 55-0223 - "Job" Rev. Last summer Charlotte began limping and complaining of leg pain. Her primary care doctor referred the family for blood work and x-rays. Her original diagnosis was minor leg length discrepancy and was sent to a physical therapist. After about a month with no improvement from physical therapy and her symptoms getting worse, Charlotte had additional x-rays, blood work and an MRI. The MRI showed a mass pushing on her lower spine. The mass had wrapped around her nerve that ran down her leg. Charlotte went into surgery the following morning. Charlotte's treatment has included triple laminectomy to decompress her spine -- 8 rounds of chemotherapy and 6 weeks of daily radiation. Charlotte completed her treatment in April. Charlotte loves playing outside with her brother and neighborhood friends. She likes to color and tell stories. She enjoys singing and dancing around the house too. Charlotte is going into kindergarten at Moose Hill School in Londonderry NH. Sara admits that she never really understood what the Jimmy Fund was prior to her daughter's diagnosis. She'd see the logo at a Red Sox game or hear about a fundraiser and knew it had something to do with sick kids but that was about the extent of it. Now that she has seen firsthand and experienced the care, they provided her family, she is forever in their debt and will do anything she can to help raise awareness and funds. It's eerie coming across the literary version of yourself, essentially the same person who lived a different life and made different decisions.'My Brother Jack' by George Johnston is a classic Aussie story about family relations, cultural snapshots, responsibility and dashed dreams. It is narrated by David Meredith and is mostly an introspective story but with the constant play of the polarity between himself and his brother Jack. There are many themes contained within but David's shirking of responsibility and Jack's portrayal as the classic Aussie bloke really jump out.I summarised the book as follows. "It him home hard and was maybe even too close to home. I saw so much of my innate personality in David, basically an alternate Kyrin living an alternate life (& I didn't like what I saw eeeep). It reveals the cultural feeling in the air between the two world wars and the ending left me reeling. A fantastic book that is very close to being in my top 10!"As always, I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. It is almost a year since Saskia Jones and Jack Merritt were killed in an attack at Fishmongers Hall in London. They were among five people who were stabbed by a prisoner who had been released on license during an event being held to celebrate five years of the Learning Together Programme, which helps prisoners gain qualifications alongside students from Cambridge University. Now, one of Jack Merritt's close friends, Rosca Onya, has released a song in his memory. Rosca grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he had survived the horror of war. He settled in the UK but struggled at school and became involved in crime. He was serving a prison sentence for delivering a firearm when he met Jack, a 25 year old course co-ordinator for Learning Together and the two became good friends. Rosca explains how he and Jack developed an incredibly close bond, and why he has now come to know Jack’s father as ‘Dad’. Warning: This audio contains descriptions from Rosca about his experience of racism when settling in the UK, and includes racists words and language.

The Hammond B-3 organ gets some big love in this episode. First up is the Delvon LaMarr Organ Trio and their debut album Close But No Cigar, a Billboard #1 in the jazz charts. The band takes the well honed sound and constructs an incredibly funky outing that comes off like a live mixtape. It harkens the spirit and quotes from the titans of B-3 like Booker T. and the MG's, the Incredible Jimmy Smith, and Brother Jack McDuff. Speaking of which, The Major Scale has been waxing on for a long time about the need to spread the word on Brother Jack McDuff's overlooked spaced-out jams of the late '60s and early '70s. We take a look at a trio of albums he cut for Blue Note during this period: Moon Rappin', To Seek A New Home, and Who Knows What Tomorrow's Gonna Bring? Unlike his other work, these albums don't turn up often on playlists, but when they do they dazzle and delight with their surreal soul and hard driving funk. Crate-diggers and producers have looked to these records since the dawn of hip-hop; just ask, J Dilla, Nas (who's father plays on one of the albums) A Tribe Called Quest, or Black Moon.
Brother Jack and Brother Sean just returned from Northern Nigeria, an area where it’s very dangerous to be a Christian; an area where radical Islamic group Boko Haram is active. “You can’t be a pastor, you can’t be a believer, without Boko Haram knowing who you are in these areas,” says Jack. Christians in the area have seen their homes and churches targeted, while Muslim homes even right next door aren’t bothered in Boko Haram attacks. Jack and Sean will also share about persecution by Fulani Muslims in Nigeria, and how that persecution is coordinated with Boko Haram attacks. In the midst of what is often a war zone, brave Christian pastors are boldly ministering for Jesus Christ and building His church. Often times they must send their families to someplace safer while they continue to minister in the hostile areas. Yet without their bold faithfulness, thousands of Christians would lose their pastors. Listen to how these pastors’ sermons have been changed by their personal experience with persecution. Be encouraged this week by the stories of how the Body of Christ is standing firm in Nigeria, even amidst tragedy, loss and hunger. You’ll also be equipped, as you listen, to pray specifically for our brothers and sisters in Nigeria.
