Your favorite Black-owned brand may quietly close this year — that's what Oui the People founder Karen Young shared with her followers a few weeks ago. In 2020, the beauty industry underwent a revolution of sorts. Black-owned brands became a much-needed albeit long overdue priority. Movements like Pull Up For Change encouraged brands to share what percentage of their business employed Black workers, and many brands whose focus specifically highlighted Black skin were launched, supported and celebrated. However, in the last year, we've seen a wave of hurdles coming for Black-owned businesses and DEI initiatives. We're seeing it in other industries as well: top Chief Diversity Officers at top entertainment companies were said to be “leaving their jobs” last year in a Wall Street Journal story titled “The Rise and Fall of the Chief Diversity Officer.” It was recently reported that thirteen lune, a retailer that highlights minority-owned brands, owed thousands of dollars to brands under its umbrella and their partner JC Penney was restructuring the partnership as a result. And the Fearless Fund, the Black women-owned venture capital firm backing early-stage businesses owned by women of color, including the beauty and wellness brands like Brown Girl Jane, Live Tinted, Bread Beauty Supply and more was indefinitely barred from deploying a program last year that doles out $20,000 grants to Black female entrepreneurs. Karen joins us to share what Black founders are up against and what we can do to help support some of our favorite brands.Shop this episodeWatch our episodes!GlossAngelesPod.comCALL or TEXT US: 424-341-0426Join our Slack to try new products before they launchJoin our FB GroupInstagram: @glossangelspod, @kirbiejohnson, @saratanTwitter: @glossangelespod, @kirbiejohnson, @saratanEmail: glossangelespodcast@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. The world of niche fragrances is booming and one brand leading the category is Brown Girl Jane — the first Black woman-owned fine fragrance brand to launch at Sephora! The line of fine perfumes focuses on “scent for wellness,” knowing that scent has the proven ability to affect us on a psychological level. Malaika Jones, co-founder and CEO, joins us to share how they leveraged clinical studies that measured brain activity when smelling different scents, why “Z-alphas” are obsessed with fragrance, how social media made buying a scent without smelling it the norm, and the trend she thinks will rise this year.Shop this episodeGlossAngelesPod.comhttps://glossangeles.komi.ioCALL US: 424-341-0426Shop products from our episodesJoin our FB Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/glossangelespodcastInstagram: @glossangelspod, @kirbiejohnson, @saratanTwitter: @glossangelespod, @kirbiejohnson, @saratanEmail: glossangelespodcast@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. Editor's note: This episode originally aired on Feb. 4, 2022. CBD — those three small letters have led to a billion-dollar industry. CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a compound from the cannabis plant that does not produce a high. People can consume it, vape it or apply it to their skin. Manufacturers are putting CBD in everything from lattes to lotions. Proponents say that CBD helps manage many health conditions, especially pain and anxiety. "One of the things that we've found that CBD is wonderful for is bringing your body closer to homeostasis, back to alignment. We know that that affects everything from stress to the ability to sleep, etc.," Malaika Jones, co-founder of Brown Girl Jane, said on Under the Radar. "Especially these days, folks are finding themselves, you know, feeling out of whack. So, our consumers really tell us that it [CBD] has been most helpful with anxiety, stress relief and sleep. ... The brand and the products have really resonated with people who need these everyday solutions to their life," she said. But many researchers insist that the substance may not work, let alone be touted as a cure-all. "One particular formulation of [CBD] was FDA approved in 2018 for the treatment of three types of seizure disorders," said Dr. Kevil Hill, an addiction psychiatrist. "But the reality is that probably 95% or greater of the CBD that people are using is not that formulation and it's not regulated by the FDA. And with that come a host of issues and those issues are related to the risk." Guests: Dr. Kevin Hill, addiction psychiatrist, director of the division of addiction psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is also the author of “Marijuana: The Unbiased Truth about the World's Most Popular Weed” Malaika Jones, co-founder of BROWN GIRL Jane, a Black woman–owned company that offers broad-spectrum CBD products. She was named one of the most powerful women of 2020 by Entrepreneur Magazine

In this episode of THE IDEALISTS. (formerly Grit & Grace), host and entrepreneur Melissa Kiguwa interviews Tai Beauchamp, co-founder and Chief Brand Officer of Brown Girl Jane, a disruptive, plant-based wellness and beauty collection named by Refinery 29 as Beauty Innovator of the Year and winner of Best in Beauty Awards by Instyle, Allure, and Popsugar. Formerly a top editor for Harper's Bazaar, O, The Oprah Magazine, and Seventeen magazines, Tai uses her vast platform to empower, educate, and entertain women of all ages. In this episode, Tai shares what it means to grow up with the gifts of strength and self-reliance as well as what it means to unlearn old habits to forge the kind of partnerships that make a company Brown Girl Jane possible. Most of all, her audacious goal to impact ten million women will leave you inspired and enlightened. . . . . In the episode: - Tai starts off the episode by describing why self-reliance is so historically ingrained in women's ideals and belief systems and why she believes it's so important women realize they don't have to go it alone—not in business and not in their personal lives. - She shares her journey of being raised by a single mother and grandmother, going to an all-girls high school, and then on to Spelman College to become the youngest magazine editor at Seventeen—all under the messaging of: “You're going to achieve this all on your own. And keep going!” - Tai then recounts the story of how she reconnected with her Spelman sisters to co-found their groundbreaking beauty innovator startup Brown Girl Jane and how that partnership led to some of the crucial unlearning that's set her on her path now. - At the end of the episode, Tai shares her audacious vision for impacting the lives of 10 million women and how much the ripple effect matters even with our smallest actions. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theidealists/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theidealists/support
