This Lenten hymn helps us to give thanks for all of the benefits that Jesus has won for us by His suffering and death in our place. Throughout the hymn, numerous pictures are used to help us see the fullness of the Gospel. Christ has accomplished the great exchange for us in so many ways. He was bound to set us free. He was wounded to heal us. He took our curse to give us His blessing. He received shame so that we might have honor. His crown of thorns means a crown of heavenly glory for us. For this, we give hearty thanks to Jesus now and forever. Find this hymn at hymnary.org/hymn/LSB2006/420. Rev. Jeremiah Johnson, pastor at Glory of Christ Lutheran Church in Plymouth, MN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Lutheran Service Book #420, “Christ, the Life of All the Living.” Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Sharper Iron is underwritten by Lutheran Church Extension Fund, where your investments help support the work of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Visit lcef.org. Lutheran Service Book 420 1 Christ, the Life of all the living, Christ, the death of death, our foe, Who, Thyself for me once giving To the darkest depths of woe: Through thy suff'rings, death, and merit I eternal life inherit. Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. 2 Thou, ah! Thou, hast taken on Thee Bonds and stripes, a cruel rod; Pain and scorn were heaped upon Thee, 0 Thou sinless Son of God! Thus didst Thou my soul deliver From the bonds of sin forever. Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. 3 Thou hast borne the smiting only That my wounds might all be whole; Thou hast suffered, sad and lonely, Rest to give my weary soul; Yea, the curse of God enduring, Blessing unto me securing. Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. 4 Heartless scoffers did surround Thee, Treating Thee with shameful scorn And with piercing thorns they crowned Thee. All disgrace Thou, Lord, hast borne, That as Thine Thou mightest own me And with heav'nly glory crown me. Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. 5 Thou hast suffered men to bruise Thee, That from pain I might be free; Falsely did Thy foes accuse Thee: Thence I gain security; Comfortless Thy soul did languish Me to comfort in my anguish. Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. 6 Thou hast suffered great affliction And hast borne it patiently, Even death by crucifixion, Fully to atone for me; Thou didst choose to be tormented That my doom should be prevented. Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. 7 Then, for all that wrought my pardon, For Thy sorrows deep and sore, For Thine anguish in the Garden, I will thank Thee evermore, Thank Thee for Thy groaning, sighing, For Thy bleeding and Thy dying, For that last triumphant cry, And shall praise Thee, Lord, on high. The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.

A mini audiobook - for the time to think in the evenings after the presents have all been unwrapped, or for a listen with the children:As the story goes, on Christmas 1914, during world war 1, in the trenches of Belgium, German and English soldiers laid down their weapons, shook hands, and played a game of football in the no man's land between the lines. Historians are unsure if an actual match was played, you can find more on that debate in the shownotes. But for today, that is neither here nor there. At the very least, on that day, the possibility of football pointed beyond the war. And so, this Christmas, 2023, we'll pause our regular conversations. I will be reading from the award winning children's book The War Game, by Michael Foreman, from 1994. Foreman narrates the story of Freddie, Billy, Lacey and Will, avid soccer playing teenagers from the English countryside, who find themselves caught up in the euphoria of flag-waving and patriotism when war breaks out in 1914. "We'll be back by Christmas," they think. By Christmas however they are in the muddy trenches, as a soccer ball emerges between the battle lines. Whether the story ends in tragedy or in hope remains up to you. HELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODE:Michael Foreman, War GameThe Christmas Truce: What Really Happened in the Trenches in 1914? Olearius, arranged by Nathan Clark George Lyrics: Comfort ye my people Speak ye peace thus saith our God Comfort comfort Comfort those who sit in darkness Mourning 'neath their sorrow's load Speak ye to Jerusalem Of the peace that waits for them Tell her that her sins I cover And her warfare now is over Hark the voice of one that crieth In the desert far and near Bidding all souls to repentance Since the kingdom now is here O that warning cry obey Now prepare for God away Let the valleys rise to meet Him And the hills bow down to greet Him Make ye make ye Make ye straight what long was crooked Make the rougher places plain Let your hearts be true and humble As befits His holy reign For the glory of the Lord Now o'er the earth is shed abroad And all flesh shall see the token And all flesh shall see the token That His word is never broken Comfort ye my people Passage: 1 “Comfort, comfort my people,” says your God. 2 “Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and announce to her that her time of hard service is over, her iniquity has been pardoned, and she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins.” 3 A voice of one crying out: Prepare the way of the LORD in the wilderness; make a straight highway for our God in the desert. 4 Every valley will be lifted up, and every mountain and hill will be leveled; the uneven ground will become smooth and the rough places, a plain. 5 And the glory of the LORD will appear, and all humanity together will see it, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken. 6 A voice was saying, “Cry out!” Another said, “What should I cry out?” “All humanity is grass, and all its goodness is like the flower of the field. 7 The grass withers, the flowers fade when the breath of the LORD blows on them; indeed, the people are grass. 8 The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God remains forever.” 9 Zion, herald of good news, go up on a high mountain. Jerusalem, herald of good news, raise your voice loudly. Raise it, do not be afraid! Say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!” 10 See, the Lord GOD comes with strength, and his power establishes his rule. His wages are with him, and his reward accompanies him. 11 He protects his flock like a shepherd; he gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them in the fold of his garment. He gently leads those that are nursing. (Isaiah 40:1-11 CSB17) Musical Reflection: Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus, tune by Rowland Hugh Prichard Reflection Notes: This jubilant Advent text was written by the well-known hymn writer, Charles Wesley. While several tunes have been used over the years, one of the most popular for the Advent season is HYFRIDOL, a lilting Welsh melody composed by Rowland Hugh Prichard in the early nineteenth century. Prayer: This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.

Doth Protest Too Much: A Protestant Historical-Theology Podcast

We go further down the list of our favorite hymns in this second of a five part series on sacred music. We give a huge thanks and shout out to Aaron Shows, James's brother-in-law, who played segments of all of the hymns we discuss on organ or piano. Please do not kill Andrew for mispronouncing your name today! We featured Aaron's music on the episode as we introduced each one. Aaron is a film-composer and also serves as the organist for First United Methodist Church of Pasadena, CA. Listen in to hear what hymns we picked (we give the writing credits on the episode audio). Without giving too many spoilers, here are some show notes: James referred to the book Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers by Dane Ortlund when he was discussing the theology of his hymn. A link to the book: https://www.crossway.org/books/gentle-and-lowly-hcj/ Charlie mentioned to hymn 604 out of Lutheran Service Book as a superior version of a hymn (that isn't on any of our lists but it disliked by two of our hosts). He also mentioned hymn 539 out of the same hymnal as his favorite tune setting to his hymn that he discusses. Here is a link to the German hymn writer Andrew referred to who lived during the 30 Years War: https://hymnary.org/person/Rist_Johann Charlie mentioned the hymn scholar Jon Vieker out of Concordia Seminary who has written about Catherine Winkworth (who we mentioned on the show). Andrew was unable to find anything exclusively on Catherine Winkworth from him. However, his faculty bio page is here: https://www.csl.edu/directory/jon-vieker/ *We also recommend you search him on https://scholar.csl.edu/ The French poet and author of Stephen's hymn is Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure. The cover art to this episode is of an early music booklet of that hymn found at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placide_Cappeau#/media/File:Partition_originale_de_Minuit_Chr%C3%A9tiens.jpg

Peter W. Marty preaches about grace. Consider your life during the sermon, what good luck and breaks have you had in your life? The good fortune and chance blessings that are part of your experience? While there may be bad luck and misfortune in your life, there are ample blessings that come your way. When we focus on the positive aspects of our lives, we tend to underestimate the role of luck and blessings, the unmerited blessings that come into our lives. Gratitude is one of the finest feelings in life. “By the grace of God, I am what I am.”Now Thank We All Our GodText: Martin Rinkhart; tr. Catherine Winkworth. Music: Johann Crüger. Catherine Winkworth (1827–1878) was not German; neither was she Lutheran. How, then, did this 19th-century Anglican literary spinster become the foremost translator of German Lutheran hymns into English? In her new “Story Time” episode, Sarah introduces Erin, Bri, and Rachel to the life and times of Lutheranism's most ubiquitous female translator, the woman who penned the English lyrics to many of the our most cherished hymns, including “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,” “From Heav'n Above to Earth I Come,” and “Now Thank We All Our God.” From her sickly childhood, to her distinctive education, travels abroad, translation work, and advocacy for women's education, to her untimely death in 1878, Winkworth's life was marked by faith, hope, and loving devotion to her craft. This episode is sure to give you a new understanding and appreciation of this remarkable woman and the hymn lyrics she left behind.
