Buckle up for a trip (pun intended) into the midlife brain. This week we sit down with neuroscientist Dr. Grace Blest-Hopley to connect the dots between cannabinoids, psychedelics, trauma, and the menopause transition. We cover CBD/THC for sleep, anxiety, pain, and inflammation; how the endocannabinoid system works, and how psychedelics like psilocybin act on serotonin pathways, reduce neuroinflammation, and promote neuroplasticity—potentially countering some brain changes seen with estrogen loss. We also dig into trauma (including why PTSD risk and expression differ by sex), the importance of set, setting, and skilled facilitation, who should not use psychedelics, the legal/clinical landscape, and much more. Curious about midlife brain health and whether these therapies are worth exploring? This one's for you.Dr. Grace Blest-Hopley is a neuroscientist with 12 years experience researching cannabis, cannabinoids, and psychedelics. Grace completed her PhD in Neuroscience at King's College London and currently serves as the Chief Scientific Officer at NWPharma Tech. She is the Research Director at Heroic Hearts Project, a charity that supports combat veterans with mental health challenges resulting from trauma and is also the founder of Hystelica, a community focused on understanding women's biology for safe and effective psychedelic use. In addition to her research and professional roles, she has served as an officer in the British Army Reserve. Dr. Blest-Hopley advocates for the therapeutic potential of these substances and strives to advance the field of psychedelic research. (Ex.19:1-2,9-11,16-20; Dn.3:52-56; Mt.13:10-17) "Blest are your eyes because they see and blest are your ears because they hear." Jesus tells us today, "Many a prophet and many a saint longed to see what you see but did not see it, to hear what you hear but did not hear it." How blessed are we, for the light of His face now shines upon us, for His teaching is now in our ears. With fear and trembling the Israelites came to Mount Sinai to witness the presence of God. They wished not to be there as He revealed Himself in mighty signs: "There were peals of thunder and lightning, and a heavy cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled." What an astounding scene! For "the whole mountain trembled" and "the trumpet blast grew louder and louder, while Moses was speaking and God answering Him with thunder." Here is the revelation of God in all His majesty as He communicates Himself to His people. Our psalm, too, sings of the glory of the Lord and the praise due Him: "Blessed are you in the temple of your holy glory," "on the throne of your kingdom," "in the firmament of heaven." The Lord is indeed "exalted above all for all ages." But overwhelming as the Lord is and difficult as it may be to find Him, we must never close our hearts to His presence. Yes, there must always be proper fear for the awesome glory of God, but our eyes must yet be open to see Him and our ears open to hear Him. He comes now to us not in thunder, not in earthquakes – but in a still, small voice… in the gentle presence of our Lord, Jesus Christ. And though this pregnant silence radiating the Word of God may be just as fearful to the heart darkened by the cares of the world, though the refining fire it is may bring a greater pain to the soul being cleansed of its sin, we must not turn away as did the ancient Israelites, as did many of Jesus' time: we must not allow our hearts to be "sluggish" to understand. He stands before us now, present here at Mass and in all His holy sacraments. Indeed, He comes to us speaking through the people and all the things around us. He is ever calling to our hearts, ever shining His light upon our minds. Do we open ourselves to Him? Do we seek to grow in the Spirit each day, every day…? Blessed are we now that Jesus has come and on the third day been raised from the dead. The Lord instructed Moses: "On the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai before the eyes of all the people." That day is now fulfilled in our sight; let us cleanse our hearts, that we might be prepared to see Him. ******* O LORD, what we see and hear, what we taste and touch, each day at your altar! YHWH, how can we look upon you who are so far beyond our understanding, who are exalted above all for all ages, we who are so sluggish of heart? The ancient Israelites trembled at your glorious presence revealed to them at Mount Sinai. How could they bear the trumpet blasts, your voice speaking in peals of thunder, the fire, the smoke covering the mountain…? Would not any soul die at such display? How shall we approach your mountain? Yet you look into the depths in which we dwell in our misery, in our darkness and our fear, and you come to us gently in the presence of your Son. Our fears you understand, LORD, and so seek to allay them; yet our blindness remains. Even to Jesus we close our hearts, though He comes only in love and bearing blessed truth to save our souls. O let our eyes look gladly upon His face and our ears hear expectantly the words from His lips! Let us turn to Him, LORD, and find healing for our hardened hearts. Let us be at peace in your presence.
“Oh, blest the house, whate'er befall, where Jesus Christ is all in all! A home that is not wholly His—how sad and poor and dark it is! “Then here will I and mine today a solemn promise make and say: Though all the world forsake His Word, I and my house will serve the Lord!”
Many of you will be familiar with the hymn 'Blessed be the tie', a very deep affirmation of the strength that comes when believers truly love each other. As so often there is a story behind the words. In the mid-eighteenth century, John Fawcett was a young Baptist preacher in poverty-stricken Wainsgate near Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire, when he received an invitation to come to a large and influential church in London. On the day of departure, with his family's possessions loaded onto a waggon, the distraught congregation begged him to stay – and he did, passing over the opportunity to minister in more affluent surroundings. In a remarkable demonstration of how precious these godly ties were, he remained faithfully ministering there for the rest of his life. May we draw fresh inspiration from the words he penned concerning the strength of our own relationships. As you will hear, I have written my own words to the tune, but with an occasional reference to the powerful original words of the hymn: God of hope and Lord of life, dearest lover of my soul You alone so worthy, You alone so dear. this is my ardent prayer: Jesus, make me evermore like You. No one else can fill my heart, no other passion satisfy; I am captured by Your beauty, and blessed by the tie that binds our hearts as one. Spirit-strong and Spirit-sure, Spirit-fired and Spirit-led, let all I am bow to serve and worship You. There is no splendour compared to knowing You, No lasting glory but Yours alone I yield my life to worship You Close companion, Shield, Defender, You confer such care on me. You reveal Yourself, dear Jesus, in speaking moments deep within my soul, that leave me trembling in awe and adoration, longing just to fill Your heart with joy. One thing I ask of You, One thing I desire: That you would open my eyes to see You in Your splendour, I want to gaze on Your beauty all the days of my life, and so become more like You, my Lord. Justin Coldstream wrote this musical arrangement for us, weaving in the theme of a popular folk song from Languedoc, (La Langue d'Oc), in the south of France. I had wondered if it might be possible to blend the two together, and he found a way to do it! Sue Harris reads the words I have written, and was joined by Thomas, Susanne and Julia Herzog, Ann Seifer, Alex Koderisch, Gabriele Kröhnert and Peter and Shirley Richards in this recent recording. These are the original words of the hymn: Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. 2 Before our Father's throne we pour our ardent prayers; our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares. 3 We share our mutual woes, our mutual burdens bear, and often for each other flows the sympathizing tear. 4 When we are called to part, it gives us inward pain; but we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again. 5 This glorious hope revives our courage by the way; while each in expectation lives and waits to see the day. 6 From sorrow, toil, and pain, and sin, we shall be free; and perfect love and friendship reign through all eternity.

This weekend we enter the second have of the Church Year with the Trinity Season. The coming 20+ weeks of the church year will focus on the RESULTS of Christ's work for us in our lives. This weekend we will be looking at the Family. The family has been created by God, and it is blessed by God. This hymn reminds us that the family is completed in Jesus. The hymn was written by a very popular German hymnwriter in the 18th Century by the name of Christoph Pfeil. His hymn was originally eight verses long and was shortened by Catherine Winkworth when she translated it. The hymn highlights the blessings that God imparts to us through the family, and weaves in Bible passages and historical accounts from the Bible as examples for us. Pfeil reminds us that Christ completes the family. Without Jesus as the center of the family, the family is incomplete. For "if He [Jesus] were not dwelling there, How dark and poor and void it were." Verse 2 is based in part on Psalm 128: "Blessed is every one who fears the LORD, Who walks in His ways." Faith in Jesus is going to bring about results. We will walk in His ways when we are brought to faith in Him. We will not be perfect, but knowing that His way is good and best, we will desire to live as He desires. Parents who instruct their children in the Word and point them to Jesus who is our all in all, will be blest (v.3). That doesn't mean that our children will not fall away from the Christian faith. They may reject Jesus as they get older. But the foundation parents give their children will help protect them from the world and its temptations. Two examples from Scripture are alluded too in this hymn. One is Luke 2:41-52 and the other is Joshua 24:15. Mary and Joseph served as a godly example of raising Jesus, bringing Him to the LORD's house, and instructing Him in the Christian faith. They are an example for us. Joshua is another example. The last verse of the hymn is a paraphrase of Joshua's words: "And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." What an confession and example for us! "I and my house will serve the LORD!" May it be true for all of us! May the LORD bless your worship this weekend, and give you strength in you family callings, assuring you of the forgiveness that is found in Jesus!
(2Cor.1:1-7; Ps.34:2-9; Mt.5:1-12) "Blessed are those persecuted for holiness' sake; the reign of God is theirs." Here is the core teaching of our faith. Here are the beatitudes, the call to sweet humility which flows like blessed honey from the lips of our Savior. And that teaching is that the humbled shall be exalted, that those who mourn and sorrow for the lack of love we find in this tainted world and who strive to bring that love to the hard heart of man shall be blessed, are blessed, for they share in the sufferings of Christ, who wept for the sins of His people, who, looking out upon them from the cross cried: "My God, why have you forsaken me?" Why has this world made in the image of Christ turned so against Him, and when shall it return to the love of God? And we who cry with Christ, even for our enemies, even for the most despicable criminal, we shall know the joy He finds – like the repentant thief, we shall be this day with Him in paradise. "Just as you share in the sufferings, so you will share in the consolation," St. Paul so concisely states. One can hear him brimming with joy as he speaks of the comfort we find in the Lord in all our afflictions, and the grace of sharing that consolation with others. This is our great possession. This is the kingdom of God within us: to see through all trouble and affliction, to conquer it in Jesus' Name – to find such strength even while here on earth to overcome all evil and come to heaven. "Blest are you when they insult you and persecute you… Be glad and rejoice." How marvelously the Lord exhorts us to come to the glory of heaven, to overcome the dark with light. For light it is where we dwell, and this light is unconquerable. Let us make room for Him in our hearts, brothers and sisters; let us give place to Him in our lives. Let us even in the simplest ways show heaven's glory here on earth. If we are lowly and we are true, our light cannot help but shine. And for those who seek it our lamps will shine, and we shall illumine one another. Let sweet humility be your treasure and the Lord's peace your goal in life. The angel of the Lord is around us to save us. Nothing of this earth shall touch us. Let us lay down our lives to destroy death's bonds. ******* O LORD, it is the cross of suffering with Christ that brings us great joy. YHWH, blessed are we when persecuted because of our love for you, because of our desire to be as your Son, for enduring all the sufferings this world brings we find great joy in your presence. You console the afflicted who call out to you, for you are the refuge of all who suffer for your sake. O LORD, let us be holy as you are holy; let us be made whole in your Son. If we must sorrow and mourn to be conformed to your Son, to be purged of all sin and join Him in your kingdom, let it be so. Let us take our strength in you; in you we find refuge. Reward in Heaven is all we desire – to you let us come by way of the Cross of your only Son. Bless you, LORD, for the goodness you show to us, for the joy you bring us in our suffering for you. You deliver us from every danger, and so we stand firm in hope, consoled by the promise in the words of Jesus. Let us remain ever blessed as we set our hearts on serving you.

2025 Feb 16 SUN: SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Jer 17: 5-8/ Ps 1: 1-2. 3. 4. 6 (40: 5a)/ 1 Cor 15: 12. 16-20/ Lk 6: 17. 20-26 We know that in Matthew's Gospel, Jesus at the beginning of his Sermon on the Mount gives us eight or maybe nine depending on how you count them, eight or nine beatitudes. They are promises that people are going to be happy in unexpected ways. We remember the first one, "Blest are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God." Well, we turn to Luke's Gospel and this is called the Sermon on the Plain. It says there that they're on a level stretch of ground. And it's interesting that Luke has Jesus proclaiming four beatitudes and four woes. And you know I've been in the habit recently of referring to people to whom I believe the woes reply -- [rather,] to whom the woes refer. But to some extent every one of us has sold out to one of these things that Jesus warns are woeful. We trust in wealth and we trust in not missing very many meals. And instead of developing a genuine sorrow, we do try to treat life as a joke. And we rely on people speaking well of us. So we need to consider how we are to be among the people who enjoy the beatitudes, the people who are blessed. We have a hint from the first reading and the Psalm today. Jeremiah talks about the need for a tree or some other plant not to be just out in some salt and empty lava waste. Instead that plant must rely upon a steady source of water. And this is the same thing we just sang about in Psalm number one. We know that we cannot rely upon ourselves. We must be rooted in the God who has given us all things and who is calling us to fullness of life, to eternal life, to heavenly life. We know we can do this because, because Jesus is risen from the dead. And we hear this truth proclaimed effectively by St. Paul. He is responding to people who they probably have gotten their Christianity mixed up with some other philosophy. And there are some who are saying there is no resurrection from the dead. And St. Paul says you have to get rid of that idea. The faith stands or falls on the fact of Jesus' resurrection, or not. We come together on the day of resurrection every Sunday to celebrate the fact that Jesus did die for us and he had to die before he could rise. He died for all of us. He is risen for all of us. We take this to heart and we are happy to reevaluate the things that bring us true happiness.

In this episode, Joe interviews two members of the Heroic Hearts Project team: Director of Donor Development and founder of The Hope Project, Allison Wilson; and Director of Research and founder of Hystelica, Dr. Grace Blest-Hopley. They discuss how The Hope Project – a nonprofit that supports spouses of veterans, Gold Star Wives, and female veterans with scholarships to psychedelic healing retreats, integration, community, etc. – merged with Heroic Hearts Project, and why this is such a necessary part of the veteran healing story: How does a family hold space for a vet returning to a suddenly alien civilian life (especially after a psychedelic journey)? How does a spouse deal with their own trauma from constant worry and isolation? Wilson and Blest-Hopley are learning that, for many spouses, having their own experience (and with other spouses) has been incredibly beneficial. They talk about: The concept of secondary PTSD (often referred to as ‘compassion fatigue') and the many ways it can manifest How Heroic Hearts is working with Imperial College London to use veteran retreats as real-world observational research The importance of involving family in the healing process, and how positive outcomes can trickle down to children The need for more research into how PTSD and the effects of psychedelics are different in women based on their unique physiology (as most studies have focused on men) and more! Order of Service: - Prelude - Blest are They D. Haas: Blest are they, the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of God. Blest are they, full of sorrow, they shall be consoled. / All: Rejoice… Blest are they, the lowly ones, they shall inherit the earth. Blest are they who hunger and thirst; they shall have their fill. / All: Rejoice… Blest are they who show mercy, mercy shall be theirs. Blest are they, the pure of heart, they shall see God! All: Rejoice… Blest are they who seek peace; they are the children of God. Blest are they who suffer in faith, the glory of God is theirs. / All: Rejoice… Blest are you who suffer hate, all because of me. Rejoice and be glad, yours is the kingdom; shine for all to see. / All: Rejoice… (twice) - Lamentations 3:18-26: And I said, “My strength and my hope have perished from the Lord.” Remember my affliction and roaming, the wormwood and the gall. My soul still remembers and sinks within me. This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I hope in Him!” The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. - Prayer - Hymn 377 - Why Should Cross and Trial Grieve Me?: vv. 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 - Blessing - Postlude Service Participants: Rev. Blest Be the Tie That Binds & Benediction Closing Music from the October 22, 2023 Worship Service Groveport UMC, Groveport Ohio Rick Birk, Pastor
Sermon preached on Sunday Morning 8/20/2023 from Acts 20:28 at FBC Easton, titled "Blest Be The Tie That Binds the Pastor and His People" by Pastor Paul Fedena, a friend of First Baptist Church of Easton.
Link to MusicAnother Hymn to St. John the Baptist (Feast: June 24th). This and it's more famous counterpart Ut Queant Laxis were originally part of the same hymn, split into three for the Divine Office. Both can be sung to the same melody (which you can learn in Episode 50) but today we'll learn a new melody. O more than blessed, merit high attaining, Pure as the snow-drift, innocent of evil, Child of the desert, mightiest of Martyrs, Greatest of Prophets.Thirtyfold increase some with glory crowneth; Sixtyfold fruitage prize for others winneth; Hundredfold measure, thrice repeated, decks thee, Blest one, for guerdon.O may the virtue of thine intercession, All stony hardness from our hearts expelling, Smooth the rough places, and the crooked straighten Here in the desert. Thus may our gracious Maker and Redeemer, Seeking a station for His hallowed footsteps, Find, when He cometh, temples undefiled, Meet to receive Him.Now as the Angels celebrate Thy praises, Godhead essential, Trinity co-equal; Spare Thy redeemed ones, as they bow before Thee, Pardon imploring.

But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes for the law, but that which is through faith in Christ – the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. - Devotion - Prayer - Hymn 435 - All Praise To God Who Reigns Above: vv. 1, 4, 5 & 6 - Blessing - Postlude Service Participants: Dr. Gene Pfeifer (Preacher), Rev. Prof. Dennis Marzolf (Pianist), Greta Bloedel (Singer), Kathryn Matzke (Singer)

Link to MusicA few days ago we celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, one of the great Marian Dogmas of the Catholic Church. In honor of our Immaculate Mother, we learn a hymn from about 200 years before this dogma was officially proclaimed by the Church.Blest guardian of all virgin souls, Portal of bliss to man forgiven, Pure Mother of Almighty God, Thou hope of earth and joy of heaven!Fair Lily found among the thorns, Most beauteous Dove with wings of gold, Rod from whose tender root upsprang That healing Flower so long foretold.Thou Tower against the dragon proof, Thou Star to storm-tossed voyagers dear; Our course lies oer a treacherous deep, Thine be the light by which we steer.Scatter the mists that round us hang; Keep far the fatal shoals away; And while through darkling waves we sweep, Open a path to light and day.O Jesu, born of Virgin bright, Immortal glory be to Thee; Praise to the Father infinite And Holy Ghost eternally.
This is a devotional taken from "Daily Devotions from the Psalms" written by Rev. John A. Heys, and published by the Reformed Book Outlet in Hudsonville, Michigan. Rev. Heys studied in the Protestant Reformed Seminary under the instruction of Herman Hoeksema and George M. Ophoff. He was ordained to the ministry of the Word, and installed as pastor, in Hope Protestant Reformed Church in Walker, Michigan in 1941. He served consecutively, and under the blessing of God effectively, three other Protestant Reformed churches, till his emeritation in 1980. In his 'retirement' he continued to be of service to the churches, and evidence of which is this set of daily devotions, one for each day of the year, published originally some 25 years ago by the Men's Society of Hudsonville (MI) Protestant Reformed Church, and reprinted here for the spiritual benefit of readers old and new. Scripture passages quoted by Rev. Heys are from the King James Version of the Bible, and the versification of the Psalms to which he refers are from the 1912 edition of the Psalter. May these brief meditations of Rev. Heys serve for the edification of the reader, as they also deepen his appreciation for the psalms-those "immortal songs of the Holy Spirit, those matchless hymns of the Bible which...with their measured language of religious feeling and devotion will abide until the end" (preface to the 1912 Psalter). "Blest powers forbid thy tender life Should bleed upon a barbarous knife; Or some base hand have power to rase Thy breast's chaste cabinet, and uncase A soul kept there so sweet; oh no, Wise Heav'n will never have it so; Thou art Love's victim, and must die A death more mystical and high; Into Love's arms thou shalt let fall A still-surviving funeral." Richard Crashaw was a 17th-century English poet and Anglican priest who later in life converted to Catholicism. He taught at Cambridge and served as curate of the Church of St. Mary the Less, where he became known for his High Church Anglicanism. Puritan detractors cited him for his "Mariolatry", or excessive devotion to the Virgin Mary, and also found fault with his adornment of the church with Christian art and his use of Catholic vestments. Under Oliver Cromwell, Crashaw was expelled from his parish and forced to flee the country. It was during this exile that Crashaw converted to Catholicism, eventually ending up in Rome under the employment of a Catholic cardinal. This same cardinal would appoint him to be canon of the Shrine of the Holy House of Loreto, where Crashaw died a few short months later. Crashaw is known for his religious poetry with distinct mystical themes. He was inspired by the works of St. Teresa of Avila, despite the fact that in England she had yet to be translated and was largely unknown. Crashaw wrote three poems about St. Teresa, of which "A Hymn to the Name and Honour of Saint Teresa" is the first. In it, Crashaw traces a development from the child Teresa's desire for physical martyrdom to the adult Teresa's mystical conquest of the inner self. St. Teresa of Avila, pray for us!
