A sermon teaching that true kingdom influence comes from living as salt and light—reflecting Jesus through grace, truth, and good works—despite persecution, to leave a legacy that draws others to God.
A call for believers to pursue purity of heart, reject hypocrisy, and actively cultivate peace through humility, honesty, and the transforming power of God's Spirit.

This text is a sermon on the fifth beatitude, emphasizing that true Christian life reflects God's mercy toward others as evidence of salvation and the values of the kingdom of heaven.
When John Fawcett loaded his possessions onto a moving cart to leave the small congregation he had served for seven years, he began his goodbyes. And then it was too much. He unloaded the cart and stayed. He never left. He died there fifty-four years later and wrote a hymn that captured what he felt: Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love. Joined in heart, and the hope to meet again. That is the hope of Christian relationships. But here's the foundation underneath all of it: you can only build this kind of relationship if you are in Jesus. Without that, even the deepest bonds are still temporary. With it, every friendship formed in the body of Christ carries the promise of eternity. So take an honest look at your church community. Are you knowing people, loving them in action, and genuinely concerned for their well-being? Pick one relationship this weekend and decide to invest in it more deeply.Pursuing God with Gene Appel is designed to help you pursue God, build community, and unleash compassion. Grounded in Scripture and shaped by Eastside's conviction that God's grace is for everyone, each episode invites you to discover God's presence and activity in your life.

The sermon on the mount, particularly the beatitudes, teaches the core ethics and values of the kingdom of God. Meekness, as described in the third beatitude, is not weakness but strength under control, trusting in God's authority and guidance. Hunger and thirst for righteousness involve a passion for personal righteousness, social justice, and a longing for God to set everything right.
The message teaches that true happiness and blessing come from humbly recognizing our spiritual need, trusting in God's grace, and finding comfort in Him even in mourning, as the Kingdom of God overturns worldly values.
It's Friday, April 24th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Ugandan evangelist stabbed to death by Muslims Suspected Muslim extremists, posing as taxi drivers on April 9th, killed a Christian evangelist in central Uganda, Africa shortly after he preached at a Gospel event, reports Morning Star News. They beat and stabbed Alfred Kitenga at about 9:30 p.m. along the Northern Bypass in the Wakiso District, after he and his wife, Anna Grace, were returning home from preaching in Kampala, the Ugandan capital. One local church leader said, “This is a painful loss for the body of Christ.” In John 15:19, Jesus said, "If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you." Iran says first Strait of Hormuz toll revenues banked Hamidreza Hajibabaei, the deputy speaker of Iran's parliament, claimed that Iran, not the United States, was now making demands after the first revenues for newly implemented tolls on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz were deposited into Iran's central bank, reports MSN. During a public gathering in the western city of Kuhdasht, ABC News reported that he said, "We have control over this Strait. If the United States continues on its current course, no vessels will pass through the Strait of Hormuz. We are not engaged in negotiations -- rather, we are making demands." The Strait of Hormuz, which serves as a vital waterway for trade along the Persian Gulf, is responsible for an estimated 20% of the world's oil supply traveling through. The blockade has led to soaring gas prices in the United States as the price of oil surpassed $100 per barrel multiple times. Trump orders U.S. Navy to shoot and kill any boat placing mines On Thursday, President Donald Trump ordered the U.S. military to “shoot and kill” any boat caught putting mines in the Strait of Hormuz, as his administration ramps up mine-clearing efforts in the critical waterway, reports TheHill.com. He added, “Additionally, our mine ‘sweepers' are clearing the Strait right now. I am hereby ordering that activity to continue, but at a tripled-up level!” Trump retrieves 10-year-old child from Cuba in transgender drama The Trump administration took the unusual step this week of sending a government plane to Cuba to return a 10-year-old boy from Utah who is at the center of a complicated and contentious custody fight involving the child's gender identity, reports NBC News. The boy's 42-year-old father, Mr. Ethington, who is pretending to be a woman himself, is accused of taking his son to Cuba without the permission from the biological mother, with whom he has shared custody. Federal and state authorities sought the return of the boy after a family member expressed concern that Mr. Ethington went to Havana, Cuba to get gender transition surgery for the boy. Mr. Ethington was arrested along with his 32-year-old partner, Blue, and charged in the U.S. with international parental kidnapping. The couple traveled with the boy to Canada, ostensibly for a camping trip in late March with Blue's 3-year-old child. However, the two adults deviously turned off their phones, after telling the older child's mother they'd arrived in Canada. Then, they flew from Vancouver to Mexico and then to Cuba on April 1. Navy secretary fired after feud over Trump's ‘Golden Fleet' with Pentagon leaders Secretary of the Navy John Phelan was fired on April 22nd after months of feuding with his Pentagon bosses, particularly over his handling of President Trump's “Golden Fleet” shipbuilding initiative, reports the New York Post. Tensions among Phelan, War Secretary Pete Hegseth and Deputy War Secretary Stephen Feinberg had been simmering for months. According to one GOP source, Phelan's leadership style was “incongruent” with Hegseth and Feinberg. The source said, “The administration really wanted to accelerate the shipbuilding program because of the president's agenda … and the secretary seemed incapable of accomplishing those goals, and he wasn't well-liked. When you combine incompetence with arrogance, it usually doesn't end well.” Deputy War Secretary Feinberg had been gradually diverting responsibility for the major project away from Phelan, the New York Times reported. Hung Cao, the Naval undersecretary, is now set to replace him. Virginia voters gave 10 of 11 Congressional seats to Democrats On Tuesday, the Virginia Democrat officials successfully convinced voters to narrowly approve a constitutionally questionable redistricting push to give 10 out of the 11 U.S. congressional seats to the Democrats, a change that one judge ruled to be unconstitutional, reports ABC News. The Democrats had previously held 6 Congressional seats in Virginia. Florida's possible redistricting could help ensure more GOP seats In light of the Virginia election, the red state of Florida is now in the spotlight, reports JustTheNews. In the Sunshine State, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis is spearheading an effort to redraw their state's congressional districts before the midterm elections. That would help to ensure the Republicans could retain their majority in the House, and can fully implement President Trump's agenda. Another medical emergency uncovered at Colorado Planned Parenthood Yet another medical emergency was spotted this month at a Colorado Planned Parenthood abortion mill with a checkered history on patient safety, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Operation Rescue reported that an ambulance was spotted on April 10 arriving at the Fort Collins Planned Parenthood. The EMS radio dispatch revealed that a 19-year-old woman came in a day after her abortion complaining of chest pains. The EMS' use of the code “Charlie Medical” indicated fears that the situation was potentially life-threatening. Abortion mills across the country are regularly flagged for harming mothers through botched abortions, unsanitary tools and environments, and lack of regulatory protections such as requirements for staff to secure admitting privileges at nearby hospitals in the event of complications. The birth of the “In God We Trust” motto And finally, on April 22nd,1864, the motto "In God We Trust," which was conceived during the American Civil War, first appeared on American coinage. By a joint resolution of Congress, it was adopted as our national motto in 1956, replacing the previous one: “Out of many, one.” In 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner, including this seldom heard fourth verse, which references the importance of trusting God as a nation. Listen. “O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation! Blest with vict'ry and peace may the Heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto - "In God is our trust," And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave” (applause and cheers) Psalm 33:12 says, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people He chose for His inheritance." Pope's Essay on Man, a masterpiece of concise summary in itself, can fairly be summed up as an optimistic enquiry into mankind's place in the vast Chain of Being. Each of the poem's four Epistles takes a different perspective, presenting Man in relation to the universe, as individual, in society and, finally, tracing his prospects for achieving the goal of happiness. In choosing stately rhyming couplets to explore his theme, Pope sometimes becomes obscure through compressing his language overmuch. By and large, the work is a triumphant exercise in philosophical poetry, communicating its broad and commonplace truths in superbly balanced phrases which remind us that Pope, alas, is one of the most quoted but least read writers in English:“Hope springs eternal in the human breast: Man never is, but always To be Blest.”Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Buckle up for a trip (pun intended) into the midlife brain. This week we sit down with neuroscientist Dr. Grace Blest-Hopley to connect the dots between cannabinoids, psychedelics, trauma, and the menopause transition. We cover CBD/THC for sleep, anxiety, pain, and inflammation; how the endocannabinoid system works, and how psychedelics like psilocybin act on serotonin pathways, reduce neuroinflammation, and promote neuroplasticity—potentially countering some brain changes seen with estrogen loss. We also dig into trauma (including why PTSD risk and expression differ by sex), the importance of set, setting, and skilled facilitation, who should not use psychedelics, the legal/clinical landscape, and much more. Curious about midlife brain health and whether these therapies are worth exploring? This one's for you.Dr. Grace Blest-Hopley is a neuroscientist with 12 years experience researching cannabis, cannabinoids, and psychedelics. Grace completed her PhD in Neuroscience at King's College London and currently serves as the Chief Scientific Officer at NWPharma Tech. She is the Research Director at Heroic Hearts Project, a charity that supports combat veterans with mental health challenges resulting from trauma and is also the founder of Hystelica, a community focused on understanding women's biology for safe and effective psychedelic use. In addition to her research and professional roles, she has served as an officer in the British Army Reserve. Dr. Blest-Hopley advocates for the therapeutic potential of these substances and strives to advance the field of psychedelic research. Many of you will be familiar with the hymn 'Blessed be the tie', a very deep affirmation of the strength that comes when believers truly love each other. As so often there is a story behind the words. In the mid-eighteenth century, John Fawcett was a young Baptist preacher in poverty-stricken Wainsgate near Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire, when he received an invitation to come to a large and influential church in London. On the day of departure, with his family's possessions loaded onto a waggon, the distraught congregation begged him to stay – and he did, passing over the opportunity to minister in more affluent surroundings. In a remarkable demonstration of how precious these godly ties were, he remained faithfully ministering there for the rest of his life. May we draw fresh inspiration from the words he penned concerning the strength of our own relationships. As you will hear, I have written my own words to the tune, but with an occasional reference to the powerful original words of the hymn: God of hope and Lord of life, dearest lover of my soul You alone so worthy, You alone so dear. this is my ardent prayer: Jesus, make me evermore like You. No one else can fill my heart, no other passion satisfy; I am captured by Your beauty, and blessed by the tie that binds our hearts as one. Spirit-strong and Spirit-sure, Spirit-fired and Spirit-led, let all I am bow to serve and worship You. There is no splendour compared to knowing You, No lasting glory but Yours alone I yield my life to worship You Close companion, Shield, Defender, You confer such care on me. You reveal Yourself, dear Jesus, in speaking moments deep within my soul, that leave me trembling in awe and adoration, longing just to fill Your heart with joy. One thing I ask of You, One thing I desire: That you would open my eyes to see You in Your splendour, I want to gaze on Your beauty all the days of my life, and so become more like You, my Lord. Justin Coldstream wrote this musical arrangement for us, weaving in the theme of a popular folk song from Languedoc, (La Langue d'Oc), in the south of France. I had wondered if it might be possible to blend the two together, and he found a way to do it! Sue Harris reads the words I have written, and was joined by Thomas, Susanne and Julia Herzog, Ann Seifer, Alex Koderisch, Gabriele Kröhnert and Peter and Shirley Richards in this recent recording. These are the original words of the hymn: Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. 2 Before our Father's throne we pour our ardent prayers; our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares. 3 We share our mutual woes, our mutual burdens bear, and often for each other flows the sympathizing tear. 4 When we are called to part, it gives us inward pain; but we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again. 5 This glorious hope revives our courage by the way; while each in expectation lives and waits to see the day. 6 From sorrow, toil, and pain, and sin, we shall be free; and perfect love and friendship reign through all eternity.

This weekend we enter the second have of the Church Year with the Trinity Season. The coming 20+ weeks of the church year will focus on the RESULTS of Christ's work for us in our lives. This weekend we will be looking at the Family. The family has been created by God, and it is blessed by God. This hymn reminds us that the family is completed in Jesus. The hymn was written by a very popular German hymnwriter in the 18th Century by the name of Christoph Pfeil. His hymn was originally eight verses long and was shortened by Catherine Winkworth when she translated it. The hymn highlights the blessings that God imparts to us through the family, and weaves in Bible passages and historical accounts from the Bible as examples for us. Pfeil reminds us that Christ completes the family. Without Jesus as the center of the family, the family is incomplete. For "if He [Jesus] were not dwelling there, How dark and poor and void it were." Verse 2 is based in part on Psalm 128: "Blessed is every one who fears the LORD, Who walks in His ways." Faith in Jesus is going to bring about results. We will walk in His ways when we are brought to faith in Him. We will not be perfect, but knowing that His way is good and best, we will desire to live as He desires. Parents who instruct their children in the Word and point them to Jesus who is our all in all, will be blest (v.3). That doesn't mean that our children will not fall away from the Christian faith. They may reject Jesus as they get older. But the foundation parents give their children will help protect them from the world and its temptations. Two examples from Scripture are alluded too in this hymn. One is Luke 2:41-52 and the other is Joshua 24:15. Mary and Joseph served as a godly example of raising Jesus, bringing Him to the LORD's house, and instructing Him in the Christian faith. They are an example for us. Joshua is another example. The last verse of the hymn is a paraphrase of Joshua's words: "And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." What an confession and example for us! "I and my house will serve the LORD!" May it be true for all of us! May the LORD bless your worship this weekend, and give you strength in you family callings, assuring you of the forgiveness that is found in Jesus!

They are recruiting participants in the study. If you wish to take part, you can get in touch here.Beyond Hystelica, we discuss Grace's military experience and her work with the Heroic Hearts Project, which supports veterans through psychedelic therapy and the importance of community support to bring psychedelic therapies to veterans.Key Takeaways:* Grace's work with Heroic Hearts Project focuses on using psychedelics to support veterans with PTSD. Grace believes that understanding the military experience is crucial for addressing PTSD effectively.* Hystelica was founded to address the lack of research on psychedelics and women's health.* The gender data gap in research is a significant issue. Research needs to focus on women's specific health needs and women's health should not be seen as niche.* Understanding the menstrual cycle is essential in research, and microdosing psychedelics may help alleviate menopause symptoms.* Patient advocacy is vital in the psychedelic research space.Listen now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Substack Podcasts.Recommended Timestamps* 00:00 Introduction and Grace's Background* 06:04 Military Experience and Leadership Development* 12:02 Heroic Hearts Project and Its Impact* 22:01 Research Initiatives and Data Collection* 29:07 Future Directions and Collaborations* 36:30 Designing the Studies at Hystelica & Observational Insights* 44:48 The Gender Data Gap in Medical Research* 49:57 Innovative Tools for Women's Health ResearchWhere to find Grace Blest-Hopley, PhD:* Hystelica* Impact of Microdosing Psychedelics on Menopausal Symptoms Study* Heroic Hearts* LinkedinWhere to find Nina Patrick, PhD:* Newsletter* LinkedIn* WebsiteThanks for listening to Nina's Notes #115. In this episode, Joe interviews two members of the Heroic Hearts Project team: Director of Donor Development and founder of The Hope Project, Allison Wilson; and Director of Research and founder of Hystelica, Dr. Grace Blest-Hopley. They discuss how The Hope Project – a nonprofit that supports spouses of veterans, Gold Star Wives, and female veterans with scholarships to psychedelic healing retreats, integration, community, etc. – merged with Heroic Hearts Project, and why this is such a necessary part of the veteran healing story: How does a family hold space for a vet returning to a suddenly alien civilian life (especially after a psychedelic journey)? How does a spouse deal with their own trauma from constant worry and isolation? Wilson and Blest-Hopley are learning that, for many spouses, having their own experience (and with other spouses) has been incredibly beneficial. They talk about: The concept of secondary PTSD (often referred to as ‘compassion fatigue') and the many ways it can manifest How Heroic Hearts is working with Imperial College London to use veteran retreats as real-world observational research The importance of involving family in the healing process, and how positive outcomes can trickle down to children The need for more research into how PTSD and the effects of psychedelics are different in women based on their unique physiology (as most studies have focused on men) and more! Order of Service: - Prelude - Blest are They D. Haas: Blest are they, the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of God. Blest are they, full of sorrow, they shall be consoled. / All: Rejoice… Blest are they, the lowly ones, they shall inherit the earth. Blest are they who hunger and thirst; they shall have their fill. / All: Rejoice… Blest are they who show mercy, mercy shall be theirs. Blest are they, the pure of heart, they shall see God! All: Rejoice… Blest are they who seek peace; they are the children of God. Blest are they who suffer in faith, the glory of God is theirs. / All: Rejoice… Blest are you who suffer hate, all because of me. Rejoice and be glad, yours is the kingdom; shine for all to see. / All: Rejoice… (twice) - Lamentations 3:18-26: And I said, “My strength and my hope have perished from the Lord.” Remember my affliction and roaming, the wormwood and the gall. My soul still remembers and sinks within me. This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I hope in Him!” The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. - Prayer - Hymn 377 - Why Should Cross and Trial Grieve Me?: vv. 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 - Blessing - Postlude Service Participants: Rev. Shawn Stafford (Preacher), Andrew Wade (Instrumentalist), Caleb Schulte (Singer), Daryan Rosenthal (Singer), Rev. Prof. Dennis Marzolf (Pianist), Hannah Caauwe (Instrumentalist), Kaleb Schmidt (Singer)

Link to MusicAnother Hymn to St. John the Baptist (Feast: June 24th). This and it's more famous counterpart Ut Queant Laxis were originally part of the same hymn, split into three for the Divine Office. Both can be sung to the same melody (which you can learn in Episode 50) but today we'll learn a new melody. O more than blessed, merit high attaining, Pure as the snow-drift, innocent of evil, Child of the desert, mightiest of Martyrs, Greatest of Prophets.Thirtyfold increase some with glory crowneth; Sixtyfold fruitage prize for others winneth; Hundredfold measure, thrice repeated, decks thee, Blest one, for guerdon.O may the virtue of thine intercession, All stony hardness from our hearts expelling, Smooth the rough places, and the crooked straighten Here in the desert. Thus may our gracious Maker and Redeemer, Seeking a station for His hallowed footsteps, Find, when He cometh, temples undefiled, Meet to receive Him.Now as the Angels celebrate Thy praises, Godhead essential, Trinity co-equal; Spare Thy redeemed ones, as they bow before Thee, Pardon imploring.
