In this episode of Story Behind the Story, host Clara Sherley-Appel talks to journalist John Gibler about his 2014 book, Torn from the World: A Guerrilla's Escape from a Secret Prison in Mexico. Torn from the World tells the story of Andrés Tzompaxtle Tecpile, a member of an armed resistance group who was forcibly disappeared and tortured by the Mexican military long after the government claimed it had stopped using these tactics. Gibler has been reporting on social movements in Mexico since 2006, when he accompanied members of the Zapatista movement on The Other Campaign (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Other_Campaign). That experience shaped his understanding of the role of journalists and journalism in resistance movements, and since then, much of his work has focused on chronicling these movements and the violent means states use to suppress them. In addition to Torn from the World, he is also the author of Mexico Unconquered: Chronicles of Power and Revolt (2009), To Die in Mexico: Dispatches from Inside the Drug War (2011), and I Couldn't Even Imagine that They Would Kill Us: An Oral History of the Attacks Against the Students of Ayotzinapa. While he lives and works primarily in Mexico, his reporting has taken him all over Latin America.

To Live is Christ, To Die is Gain - Philippians 1:20-26 - Stephen Watson
In Philippians chapter 1 we saw Paul detailing his hardship and how he continued to persevere…until verse 26 where Paul speaks about his struggle and how he defined life: for me to LIVE is Christ (meaning every breath he takes was because of God's goodness)…and then he says TO DIE is gain (that if this fleshly existence ended, Jesus is still faithful and in control). In verse 26, Paul stops focusing on his own trials and starts to talk about the Philippians' trials. It's important to remember Paul's letters did not originally have chapter or verse breaks. Chapter 2 is not a new thought; it is a continuation. Paul starts with the word “so” Phil 2:1-2 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Und was müsste anders laufen? Living on PurposePhilippians 1:12-26Message Slides For the bulletin in PDF form, click here. To Live is Christ - Live to advance the Gospel…not myself. - Live for the progress and joy of others. To Die is Gain - Death means being with Christ for those who are in Christ. - Death can be faced confidently for those who are in Christ.Home Church Questions1. In Philippians 1:21, we discover Paul's purpose in life: “to live is Christ.” Most people don't seem to live with this purpose. What are some examples of other purposes for which people live? 2. “To live is Christ” means I live to advance the Gospel . . . not myself (1:12-18). Paul views his current situation as an opportunity to advance the Gospel, even though he is imprisoned. What are some practical next steps you can take to advance the Gospel where God has placed you? 3. All people are longing for meaning and purpose. Why is this? How would you explain to someone that “to live is Christ” is the purpose that will truly bring satisfaction and joy? 4. “To live is Christ” means I live for the progress and joy of others (1:25-26). I experience joy by working for the progress and joy of others. This teaching is counter-intuitive, but we see it throughout the Bible. Why is joy found through working for the joy of others? Have you experienced this? What next steps can you take this week to work for the progress and joy of someone else? 5. Paul says, “to die is gain” (1:21). He is not afraid to think about death and talk about death. Do we think and talk about death a healthy amount and in a healthy way? Why or why not? 6. Paul says “to die is gain” because death means being with Christ for those who are in Christ. We often emphasize that death means escaping the pains of this world. And we often emphasize death means enjoying the benefits of heaven. But we don't often emphasize that death means being with Christ. Why should this be what we emphasize? What does it look like to emphasize this? 7. Paul says “to die is gain” because death can be faced confidently for those who are in Christ. We see Paul's confidence in vv.18-20. What are some reasons we can be confident in the face of death? 8. Are there any conversations you need to have with someone as you think about death? Is there someone in your life who is not confident about facing death? Do you need to have a conversation with someone so that you can become confident about facing death? Paul's entire life was dedicated to fully living for Christ so that at the end of his life, he could confidently say he had fought the good fight and finished his course. His life was devoted to laboring for the gospel, and though he accomplished much, he wrote, "To die is gain." Join us for the conclusion of Not Ashamed, as Paul's life challenges us to live each day for Christ and embrace the truth that for the believer, there is no greater gain than death.Verses Used:Acts 28:23, 30-31Philippians 1:21Philippians 3:7-8Philippians 1:22-252 Timothy 4:6-82 Timothy 4:17-18Discussion Questions:1. When Paul says, "To Live is Christ," what does he mean? 2. Paul says that to live means fruitful labor for him. What sort of fruitful labor did he engage in throughout his life? What kind of fruitful labor do you engage in? 3. Paul said, "To Die is Gain." How could he have that perspective, and why should we feel the same?4. Are you living your life in such a way that if today was your last day, you could confidently say alongside Paul that you have "fought the good fight?" Why or why not? What could you do differently to fully run the race that God has set before you and be able to say that you, too, have fought the good fight?
Tune in for the sister episode to last week. This case covers another woman sentenced to death via electric chair in New York, just like Martha Place. Meet Maria Barbella, who walked up to her lover, Dominico Cataldo, and slit his throat from ear to ear because he refused to marry her. However, there is much more to this story than the newspapers are willing to print. For this episode I got to reconnect with Nick Ryder from the band Adapter Adapter. We get much deeper into his music history this time and I have to say there were a lot of surprises to me that came out during our conversation! We discussed playing in a metal band in his youth, his learning curve with guitar, and he tells a very honest account of making Adapter Adapter's new album, Sleep Spell!!! Interlude song order: "Devoid of Faith" by Axiom from their EP, Ruins of Prosperity "Fixin' To Die" by Adapter Adapter from their Self-titled EP "RI Shakedown" by Adapter Adapter from their album, No Comfort "Sleep Spell" by Adapter Adapter from their album, Sleep Spell "Voorhees" by Adapter Adapter from their album, Sleep Spell // Interview recorded February 23, 2023 via video chat // Intro music by Cedros // Hosted by James Toomey //
Pastor Nate brings the message "To Die or Deny" from Mark 14:53-72. Earlier in the garden Peter had told Jesus, "If I must die with you, I will not deny you." Yet, when the pressure cooker of life heated up, Peter's real treasure came to the surface: self-preservation. In contrast, Jesus continues his path to the cross of death and perseveres in what is true. The contrast is once again obvious. And, we are thankful that Jesus did die in our place.
Gentry goes Backstage on the set of 'To Die For' to talk to actor and country singer John Schneider. The 'Dukes of Hazzard' star talks about his newest movie 'To Die for' which Schneider leads and directs. The film honors the people who have sacrificed for our freedoms and sets the record straight about what matters in this country today. Going against woke culture and defeating the snowflakes is the goal this motion picture shoots to achieve. John describes the importance of the American flag in today's society and why we should be fighting to protect it. He also describes the importance of debate and conversing issues with one another. Gentry and John talk about 'The Dukes of Hazzard', making movies, patriotism, and so much more. Make sure to subscribe and follow for the latest interviews.
In this episode Doctor Beep and Nurse Claire join the conversation to discuss, dissect, and demolish the quivering request in a piece published in The Atlantic that we have a “COVID Amnesty” — that the same people who wanted you to lose your job, bar you from shops and restaurants, wanted you TO DIE, now want to say “Okay, yeah, you were right — are we cool now?” Ideas, opinions, and policies have consequences and it would be a miscarriage of justice to ignore the evil that was done in the name of fear (at best) or malice (definitely likely in some cases). And lest we forget: death comes for us all so remember the souls who have gone before us and are now in Purgatory: pray for them because many of us will be there soon enough! This week I spiraled out with actor, writer, comedian and true gem Sydney Battle (Stapleview, Swan Boy.) We dug deep into what went wrong in Sydney's very fresh therapy break-up, agreed we'd rather be caught doing the dirty by a huge group of strangers than a single family member, discussed how people in NY vs LA respond to a public panic attack, and so much more. Plus, Sydney shares a shame story about missing a college midterm because she spent six hours trying to choose an outfit. But obviously...it's a bit more complicated than that. What makes a man put his life on the line for others day after day...FOR FREE? That's exactly what I asked former reserve police officer AND volunteer firefighter of 25 years, now author, Joseph Fair. He tells us of his heart to serve and why he's willing to do it for free. We learn where the safest place is for your patrol car to catch on fire. And we answer the age old question of "Who's cooler, policemen of firemen?" Joseph Patrick Fair is a father to college age twins Jenny and Ryan; they are the center of his universe. He lives in West Michigan. After a near fatal on duty gunfight, Joseph found his inner-author. His writing is trademark courage and camaraderie with a sprinkling of small-town-ism. On any given day, Joseph can be found writing or championing a philanthropic cause. He is a man of purpose and meaning in life.
