Tom Quinn, twice Emmy-nominated writer/produceer who spent 22 years making documentary programs for Discovery Channel, History Channel, BBC and others including Discovery's archaeology adventure series, Expedition Unknown chats with me today about his humorous book, What Do You Do with a Chocolate Jesus? An Irreverent History of Christianity - written as an argument against the growing religious fundamentalism in American law and politics. He's also produced shows on urban legends, conspiracy theories and religious cults. Originally from New Jersey, Tom has an MFA from the American Film Institute and today works as a freelance writer for print and YouTube. He calls himself a humorous skeptic.

His one-on-one conversations take you inside the mind of a street hustler who questions God's existence. Raised in the inner city of Baltimore, Maryland Tony attended public schools where he first discovered his passion for role play. Tony worked as an Extra on The HBO show The Wire, and several other movie projects and fell in love with working in film; before making his decision to go back to college and graduated from Morgan State University, majoring in Theatre Arts. Tony is a man with a vision and a great purpose to make a difference in the lives of the youth. He offers a variety of services and has dedicated his life to Changing The Narrative of the youth in America. Thomas Quinn: "What Do You Do with a Chocolate Jesus?" is the funny and skeptical, yet genuine exploration of the Christian history they don't teach in Sunday school. It finds humor, irony, and occasional insight amid the inconsistencies, absurdities, hypocrisies, and flat out weirdness that too often passes for eternal truth. Like a history of religion as done by The Daily Show, it humorously explores the facts, the history, and the big ideas in an engaging and entertaining story. Pitting actual Scripture against pious propaganda, Thomas Quinn treks through chapter and verse of the New Testament, explores the sordid saga of medieval beliefs (including End-of-the-World panics and fights about what kind of stuff Jesus was made of), and reveals some of the shocking attitudes of America's founders toward religion. It isn't always pretty, but it's usually good for a laugh.
As is often the case with music, love can grow in increments. The Deeper Cuts trio touched on that in our discussion on Tom Waits' Mule Variations album all the way back in Season Two when Shannon first saw the artist's incendiary performance of “Chocolate Jesus” on Letterman. But even as listeners grow into a sound over time, artists themselves reveal something of their art through various stages of their careers, too. It was this phenomenon that struck Shannon when she heard 1974's The Heart of Saturday Night, which presents Tom Waits in an earlier incarnation. The album revealed new depths and new perspectives for her on his work, solidifying her fandom for all time. But what were the impressions of her two cohorts? Did we all sidle up to the bar and knock a few back in celebration of the weekend, or did we get bogged down by the threat of Monday morning? Make with the clicking to find out, friends as we begin our sixth, yes that's right, sixth season of Deeper Cuts. As ever, our nifty Spotify Playlist will cover each episode of this season, as well as the recently completed miniseries, The Live Sessions. And don't forget to talk to us on Twitter (@deepercutscast) and to rate and review us wherever you get your podcasts!

Selección musical: 🎶 "Big in Japan" 🎶 "Chocolate Jesus" de Tom Waits.

Steven Jones, filmmaker of the new documentary on Olivia Robertson, one of the founders of the Fellowship of Isis, will discuss the making of the documentary and his insights from Lady Olivia Robertson after having spent so much time filming with her. We'll discuss subjects such as the importance of the feminine in a world dominated by patriarchy, how the FOI tries to offer ways to achieve balance, why a reconnection with the suppressed divine feminine is not a gender issue, the alchemical wedding and the power of ritual, as seen in the film -- and more! AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HOUR...Thomas Quin, author, writer for print and television, documentary producer and director talks about his book, "What Do You Do with a Chocolate Jesus? - An Irreverent History of Christianity" We'll get philisophical and political with discussion about Eve's raw deal and ask questions like was Jesus a feminist? Was there a female pope? Where does the bible actually stand on abortion? Is our government based on Christian values? How do politicians misrepresent Christianity? And the Evangelical Right, Tea Party hypocrisy and the bogus Right Wing "historians"
