We're delighted to bring you an extended interview with the man who literally wrote the book on Tom Waits, Barney Hoskyns. Bouncing through a selection of Waits's material from the 70s to the present day, we discuss what it's like to interview and write about artists, what changed (and stayed the same) in Waits's music, and how you should always take a suggestion from Nick Cave seriously. website: songbysongpodcast.com twitter: @songbysongpod e-mail: songbysongpodcast@gmail.com Music extracts used for illustrative/review purposes include: Ol' 55, Closing Time, Tom Waits (1973) Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets To The Wind In Copenhagen), Small Change, Tom Waits (1976) Shore Leave, Swordfishtrombones, Tom Waits (1983) Goin' Out West, Bone Machine, Tom Waits (1992) Take It With Me, Mule Variations, Tom Waits (1999) Satisfied, Bad As Me, Tom Waits (2011)
Don't let the gear eclipse the performance! Jacquire talked about creating 1+1 Management, the five tiers of an artist's professional team, mixing in UAD Luna, making music for META, why social media is important, and how to mix with delay & reverb. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Jacquire King, a Grammy-winning music producer, mixer, and engineer with over 13 billion streams and more than 35 Grammy nominations. His extensive credits include: Tom Waits, Kings of Leon, James Bay, Shania Twain, Modest Mouse, Smash Mouth, Norah Jones, Buddy Guy, Zach Bryan, Punch Brothers, Ingrid Michelson, Cold War Kids, City and Colour and many many more. And I'm going to quote from his great website bio: “Jacquire has just one gold record hanging in his studio. It's Mule Variations by Tom Waits, a personal favorite in the mile-long list of critically acclaimed albums, multiple GRAMMY Awards, and national accolades he's earned in more than 30 years as a sought-after recording engineer and producer.” He grew up in the Washington, DC area, absorbing a rich mix of influences from reggae to punk rock. While his friends were forming hardcore bands, Jacquire was studying the noise, making cassette mixes, and learning to transform raw live music into a complex listening experience. If he maintains one constant aesthetic in his work, it's blending traditional recording artistry with emerging tools and technology. “Curiosity moves an art form forward, so I incorporate whatever gives the artist the freedom to create. I always want to be part of that evolution.” Jacquire is committed to playing an active role in the recording industry's next chapter, serving as an ambassador for new technology and acting as a frequent mentor to up-and-coming professionals. “I don't have any studio secrets,” he said. “If I can help someone figure out their own combination of talent and technology, I want to do that. If I can give an artist a new tool to make something great, count me in.” He has his own studio, The LBT, just outside of Nashville, Tennessee. If I've seen 80 Phish shows, I've seen at least half of those with one of the best dudes I've ever known, Jake Watson. He moved from KC to Charleston a few years back, but I was lucky enough to nab a few hours of his time on a recent visit back home, and he was kind enough to spend some of that time with me recording Episode #67.In addition to discussing the most-excellent human being that Jake is, we chatted about a few of his favorite records over the years, and they are these:Rain Dogs, Tom Waits (1985)Paul Simon's Graceland (1986)Paul's Boutique, Beastie Boys (1989)Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend (1991)So, check out our conversation. Sammy was game! Here's the list of what we covered:Closing Time (1973)The Heart of Saturday Night (1974)Nighthawks at the Diner (1975)Small Change (1976)Foreign Affairs (1977)Blue Valentine (1978)Heartattack and Vine (1980)Swordfishtrombones (1983)Rain Dogs (1985)Frank's Wild Years (1987)Bone Machine (1992)The Black Rider (1993)Mule Variations (1999)Alice (2002)Blood Money (2002)Real Gone (2004)Bad As Me (2011)Sammy was just as fantastic this time around as he was a few months back, and I'll definitely have him back for another run through some artist's body of work. As is often the case with music, love can grow in increments. The Deeper Cuts trio touched on that in our discussion on Tom Waits' Mule Variations album all the way back in Season Two when Shannon first saw the artist's incendiary performance of “Chocolate Jesus” on Letterman. But even as listeners grow into a sound over time, artists themselves reveal something of their art through various stages of their careers, too. It was this phenomenon that struck Shannon when she heard 1974's The Heart of Saturday Night, which presents Tom Waits in an earlier incarnation. The album revealed new depths and new perspectives for her on his work, solidifying her fandom for all time. But what were the impressions of her two cohorts? Did we all sidle up to the bar and knock a few back in celebration of the weekend, or did we get bogged down by the threat of Monday morning? Make with the clicking to find out, friends as we begin our sixth, yes that's right, sixth season of Deeper Cuts. As ever, our nifty Spotify Playlist will cover each episode of this season, as well as the recently completed miniseries, The Live Sessions. And don't forget to talk to us on Twitter (@deepercutscast) and to rate and review us wherever you get your podcasts!
Singer-songwriter Cory Branan is our guest to chatter about Mule Variations, the 1999 album from Tom Waits. We've been looking forward to being able to share this conversation with you all. Cory has a fantastic new album, When I Go I Ghost, which is being released this week (10/14/22).The album features guests Jason Isbell, Brian Fallon and Garrison Starr and is hands down, one of our favorite records of the year. From the moment you drop the proverbial needle and hear "When in Rome, When in Memphis," it's a sure bet that you'll be on board with this release from Cory.Cory had great insights regarding Waits and it was a real pleasure to welcome him to The Record Player. Check out his music and dates for his fall tour which is in progress as we speak. Get out and see a show. You'll thank us later.
Singer Niamh Regan tells Dave about her love for Tom Waits' album Mule Variations from 1999.
This week's Record Club is a very special - and unusual - one, as we tackle Tom Waits for the second time, zeroing in on his 1999 masterpiece Mule Variations, to examine the craft of his songwriting and all of the ways he is a compelling and moving musical presence and wordsmith. However, to add a wrinkle to the conversation, we also complement this by integrating Scarlett Johansson's 2008 album of Tom Waits cover songs, Anywhere I Lay My Head, which has been largely forgotten... for good reason. How did this bizarre curio (which features guest appearances from David Bowie!) go so terribly wrong, and what does it tell us about the songcraft and one-of-a-kind personality of the madman Tom Waits himself? Watch the video version of this episode and support the channel here.

On this bonus episode of On In Five, Anton talks with Mooka Rennick, the founder of Prairie Sun Recording Studio, and Jeff Sloan, the Studio Manager during the years of Tom Waits. The studio was used by Tom Waits for a few of his albums, including Bone Machine, Mule Variations, and the Orphan collection. They talk about their time working with Tom, how he discovered and used what has now been known as the Waits Room, and some other artists who have come through the studio.

Note: Sam refers to Eddie Campbell as Australian; he is actually Scottish and just lived in Australia for a number of years. website: songbysongpodcast.com twitter: @songbysongpod e-mail: songbysongpodcast@gmail.com Music extracts used for illustrative/review purposes include: Eyeball Kid, Mule Variations, Tom Waits (1999) That's Not My Name, We Started Nothing, The Ting Tings (2008) We think your Song by Song experience will be enhanced by hearing, in full, the songs featured in the show, which you can get hold of from your favourite record shop or online platform. Justin returns to discuss the nature of abandonment and housing with Martin and Sam, as well as our feelings about Waits's sentimental tone. The breadth and intimacy of Waits's writing is highlighted by our new guest host, director Justin Audibert, who joins Martin and Sam for this quasi-title track from Mule Variations. We discuss the emotional expression of singing through popular music, how Waits paints a portrait of America with specifics and generalities, and yodelling. Lots on yodelling. Waits returns to the vignette form (at least by Sam's estimation) in this sentimental track that (in Martin's estimation) doesn't manage to hit on all levels. The value of sentiment, the origins of songwriting and the "truthfulness" of expression in music writing, and the ever-present question of authenticity all feature in this third conversation with Chad Clark. website: songbysongpodcast.com twitter: @songbysongpod e-mail: songbysongpodcast@gmail.com Music extracts used for illustrative/review purposes include: Hold On, Mule Variations, Tom Waits (1999) Fast Car, Tracy Chapman, Tracy Chapman (1988) We think your Song by Song experience will be enhanced by hearing, in full, the songs featured in the show, which you can get hold of from your favourite record shop or online platform. Chad Clark rejoins Sam & Martin to discuss the second track of Mule Variations... or is it just a retread of the first? We return and begin again, this time with Chad Clark of Beauty Pill joining Martin and Sam for the first track of 1999’s Mule Variations. After last week’s vote ended in 100% of people agreeing that Mule Variations should go into the discography, we thought we’d return to punk and cover Sing Sing Death House by The Distillers. We also welcome back Anna Goldthorp! The Distillers only released 3 albums in their career, and people generally tend to look more favourably on their 3rd (and to date, final) album Coral Fang. But this week Anna and Mark are here to argue Sing Sing Death House is not only unsung but also the band’s best record. On this episode, aside from going into the band’s limited back catalogue, we spend a good chunk of time talking about how influential Brody Dalle is, why The Distillers were an important band in the early 00s, and her legacy. As we’re now recording remotely, we’re still sorting out a few things on the audio side, so this episode may sound a little strange in places. Sing Sing Death House - unsung classic? You decide.
It’s difficult to imagine a world without Tom Waits. You may not be a fan, or even at all familiar with his music, but he’s been such a well known cult musical figure for so long that he’s taken on an almost mythical air. And mystical. And mythological. Basically, anything that starts with m and ends in al. That’s largely because he remains something of an enigma. An intensely private person, fans only really know him through his music, and his music is weird. This week Chris brings his 12th studio album Mule Variations to the table, obstinately proclaiming that it is an unsung classic. We try to give his entire 16 album catalogue a once over and manage to drag this our discussion to a conclusion in just over an hour and half. If you’re not a fan of Waits, it’s unlikely this episode will do much to change your opinion, but hey, you might just learn something in the process. Is Mule Variations an unsung classic? Only you can decide.

Jeff and Jobe reveal some deep dark secrets from their musical past on Episode 28: Skeletons in Our Closet —music they might be ashamed they like...or are they? Plus the guys talk about Mule Variations from Tom Waits, and music from Noehart in the Unsigned Artist Spotlight.
Sometimes an album can offer you a point of departure: that moment when suddenly – WHAM! – everything clicks and new musical vistas are in front of you. We return to a theme we discussed back in episode 7 of our first season as we talk about Shannon’s journey with Tom Waits, specifically with his 1999 album Mule Variations. In this episode, we talk about how we perceive music and its affectations. We talk about how we are confronted and challenged by music that comes out of left field in a way we don’t expect. We talk about how we’re charmed by it, changed by it, even annoyed by it. Graeme isn’t convinced, but Shannon and Rob certainly are – and lively discussion ensues! And after our journey is over, where do we end up? There’s only one way to find out, kids. Lend us your ears. Our Spotify playlist has all the songs from this album. Each week, we'll add the other albums we cover this season to it as well, so check it out!

My guest this week is Grammy winning producer and engineer, Oz Fritz. Oz is the man behind many amazing sonic masterpieces, including a number that we hold in high esteem on this show. In particular, John Hammond's "Wicked Grin" and Tom Waits' "Mule Variations". But those 2 faves aside, he has collaborated on over 60 projects with John Zorn and Bill Laswell and has worked on albums for Iggy Pop, The Master Musicians of Joujouka and many more. Oh, and I found out he made a rap album for Hulk Hogan in his early days! We got a chance to talk through all that and more. Enjoy my conversation with Oz Fritz, and please subscribe to the podcast for free on iTunes!
Stephen Hodges joins us this week on Music Makers and Soul Shakers. Stephen is an incredibly creative and grooving drummer who plays on the most iconic Tom Waits' albums (Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, and Mule Variations to name just a few!), all of Mavis Staples' recent recordings, and lots of other cool sessions and albums. He worked with David Lynch on the "Fire Walk With Me" Soundtrack, and cut his teeth in the bars of Long Beach and Los Angeles in the late 70's and early 80's alongside Los Lobos and the Blasters. Stephen discusses his early days as a drummer/composer for modern dance classes, working in seedy bars in through the 70's, getting his mind blown by Howling' Wolf, developing his unique drum setup with James Harman, and landing gigs with Tom Waits and John Hammond. This is a hilarious and energetic interview with a very humble and generous musician and much can be learned from him by drummers and non-drummers alike!
