Brisa Carleton joins Carol Fitzgerald to talk about her debut novel, LAST CALL AT THE SAVOY, which is a Bookreporter Bets On selection. The inspiration for the book came when Brisa was visiting The Savoy Hotel in London more than a decade ago. She saw a footnote about Ada Coleman in a cocktail menu and was surprised that so little information existed about her. Ada was a prominent mixologist at the hotel from 1903 to 1925, and she invented many cocktails, including the "Hanky Panky." Brisa discusses writing a dual timeline for the book: the historical story about Ada and the modern one featuring Cinnamon Scott, an aspiring New York writer who travels to London to help her pregnant sister, Rosemary, at The Savoy. An award-winning Broadway producer with three Tony wins to her credit, Brisa also talks about her role as a producer and how it differs from being a writer. In this episode of the Prayer Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe discusses the fifth chapter of Tractate Zevachim, recited daily in the morning prayers as part of the korbanot section, aligning with the Daf Yomi cycle starting October 8, 2025. He emphasizes the spiritual and practical significance of studying the offerings, which substitute for actual temple sacrifices, and their role in fulfilling the mitzvah of daily Torah, Mishnah, and Talmud study. The episode connects the offerings to prayer, personal transformation, and the Jewish mission. Key points include:Purpose of Studying Korbanot: Reciting the verses (Torah), Mishnah (Zevachim, Chapter 5), and Brisa of Rabbi Yishmael (Talmud, planned for next week) before prayers fulfills the mitzvah of daily study, even for busy professionals. This ensures spiritual connection before engaging in prayer, as studying offerings is akin to bringing them (1:15–2:23).Written vs. Oral Torah: The Written Torah (Tanakh: Torah, Nevi'im, Ketuvim) outlines what to do (e.g., mezuzah, shechita), but lacks how-to details. The Oral Torah (Mishnah, Talmud, Midrash, Kabbalah), compiled by Rabbeinu HaKadosh into six orders, decodes these instructions, transmitted from Moshe at Sinai. Rabbi Wolbe recounts helping his attorney friend understand that Moshe wrote the Torah per Hashem's command, citing Numbers 9:23 and the small aleph in Vayikra (Leviticus 1:1) as evidence of Moshe's humility (2:23–11:25).Zevachim, Chapter 5's Uniqueness: This chapter, titled “Eizehu Mekoman” (What is their place?), is unique as the only Mishnah chapter without disputes, reflecting unity and clarity in the laws of where offerings are brought in the temple. This unity mirrors the Kohen's requirement to be at peace with others to serve, emphasizing communal harmony (13:37–14:40, 24:51–26:01).Types of Offerings:Communal Offerings: The Tamid (daily morning and evening) and Musaf (on Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh, holidays like Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot) represent collective devotion.Individual Offerings: Include Olah (burnt, symbolizing complete devotion), Shlamim (peace, elevating physicality), Pesach, firstborn, tithe, thanksgiving, and Chagigah. Each addresses a spiritual need, like the Olah atoning for forbidden thoughts (18:37–19:21, 28:22–29:29).Prayer as a Substitute for Offerings: Rav Schwab explains that the Amidah parallels the Olah: stripping physicality (hafshet, like skinning), approaching with a broken heart (nituach, like cutting), and praying with fiery enthusiasm (kolil l'ishim, like burning). This transforms prayer into a spiritual offering, connecting the soul to Hashem (29:29–33:16).Spiritual Insights:Dignity in Eating: Rabbi Wolbe cites the Talmud's comparison of eating in the marketplace to a dog, urging dignified eating (e.g., using utensils, not hands) to elevate the physical, as in the Shlamim offering (22:04–23:55).Jewish Privilege and Responsibility: Responding to his son's reluctance to attend yeshiva, Rabbi Wolbe highlights the privilege of being among the few Jewish boys studying Torah, despite antisemitism. He notes that hatred (sinah) descended with Sinai, but being chosen demands humility and shining as a light to the world (33:16–37:00).Prayer and Temple Restoration: The phrase “Eizehu Mekoman” evokes longing for the temple, paired with a prayer for its speedy rebuilding. Prayer is most effective after “feeding” Hashem with offerings, akin to Esther's feast strategy (40:44–41:30)._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Dr. Leonard & June GoldbergDownload the Prayer Podcast Worksheets:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1iBVevW1ydyjSeyeO0iCcina7e8vix3Lt?usp=sharingThis episode (Ep. #37) of the Prayer Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Dr. Leonard & June Goldberg! In this week's episode, it's just me — Charles Max Wood — and I'm joined by the incredibly sharp and open-source-loving Aral Roca, direct from Barcelona! Aral's the creator of Brisa, a new full-stack web framework that flips the script on how we build modern web apps. If you thought the "another day, another framework" meme was played out... well, Brisa might just change your mind.Key Takeaways:-Brisa's Big Idea: It's designed to let you build web apps with minimal or zero JavaScript on the client side. Think HTML streaming, server actions, and components that render server-side first, but can gradually hydrate on the client.-Server-first FTW: Aral walks us through how Brisa handles server actions — even capturing click and scroll events on the server — using ideas inspired by HTMX, LiveView, and server components from frameworks like Next.js.-Tiny and Mighty: The whole framework is incredibly lightweight. Web components come in at just ~3 KB, and the built-in i18n system is under 1 KB!-From Idea to Reality: Aral started Brisa to scratch his own itch — building side projects and blogs without bloated front-end code. But now, others are using it too (yes, even in production!), including one travel agency that's gone all-in.-Multi-platform Future: Brisa has adapters in the works for Vercel, Node, and Deno — plus integration with Tauri for building native Android, iOS, and desktop apps from the same codebase.-What's Coming: Roadmap goals include improved hot reloads, more adapters, transitions, lazy-loaded components, and a better playground for developers to tinker with.Oh, and yes — Aral does parkour. In the first half, filmmaker Max Lebow joined Richard Syrett (Twitter) to discuss The Final War, a gripping podcast series chronicling Lebow's experience being targeted, stalked, and manipulated by a shadowy group claiming to be dissidents of the Chinese Military. While struggling to find work as an actor, Lebow began receiving unsettling Instagram messages suggesting he was being surveilled. These bizarre communications asked him to act as a mole and gather sensitive information. Feeling pressured and lacking a clear sense of purpose at the time, he agreed. As the requests escalated, he found himself gathering information from a COVID testing site, feeling torn between the thrill involved and the looming threat of serving hard time. "I started to think, could this be a crime?" he reflected. Lebow recounted the moment he decided to push back against their demands, prompted by a conversation with his girlfriend, Julia. She challenged him by asking, "Don't you want to know the answers?"This pivotal moment led him to contact the FBI, fearing he might be committing treason. Lebow described the anxiety of being interviewed by federal agents. "I was shaking in my boots," he admitted. He asked them directly if he had done something wrong, to which they reassuringly replied, "It's a good thing you brought this to us, and not the other way around."According to Lebow, his podcast The Final War provides a detailed, first-person account of his ordeal, featuring reenactments of his conversations with a hacker and interviews with friends and experts. "I wanted the audience to kind of have my experience," he explained. Listeners can find The Final War on all major podcast platforms.------------------In the second half, philanthropist Elisabeth Carson shared her research into the transformative power of earthing and trauma healing. Earthing, or grounding, involves connecting directly with the Earth's surface to improve health. "When you connect to the earth, you feel your body shift out of a stress state and go into a more calm, relaxed state," Carson explained. She claimed the practice is based on the absorption of negative ions—electrons that she said help reduce chronic inflammation and promote overall wellbeing.Carson traced the decline in people's health back to the 1970s, coinciding with the widespread adoption of rubber-soled shoes that disconnect individuals from the Earth. She stressed the importance of reconnecting with nature, suggesting that even 20 to 30 minutes of grounding daily can lead to significant improvements in mood and stress levels.Carson also shared her personal journey into earthing, which began with her own struggles with chronic pain and stress. After experimenting with grounding products, she experienced remarkable benefits, including improved sleep and reduced anxiety. "I woke up with zero pain in my body," she recounted.Another striking story involved her friend Brisa, who had suffered a severe stroke and was locked in her body for 11 months. During a meeting with other earthing experts, Brisa was grounded using a patch. Carson described the immediate change in Brisa's voice and color as "astonishing", saying that "for the first time, she was able to eat solid food and sleep through the night."
