JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI - MAYOR LUMUMBA CLAIMS BEING PURSUED BY FBI IS NOT ANYTHING FOREIGN TO HIM

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba used his most recent episode of “Ask Antar” to thank supporters and reassure residents the city of Jackson is moving forward even as he faces multiple corruption charges. In October, a federal grand jury indicted Lumumba, Ward Six Councilman Aaron Banks, and Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens in connection with a bribery scheme to bring a convention center hotel to downtown Jackson. The comments mark only the second time the mayor has discussed the indictment since it was unsealed on November 7. “People have been keeping me lifted up... sending me daily text messages, prayers, Scriptures, lifting up my family, not only in Jackson but around the country,” he said. “These are the moments that you're taught who really are your friends and who support you, and I've been grateful for that support.” Lumumba, dressed in a gray sweater and a black button-up shirt, reiterated statements he made outside of the Thad Cochran Federal Courthouse last month, that he was going to continue to fight the charges and work for residents. “I don't want anyone to be fearful for that,” he said. “I'm going to move around. I'm not going to walk around as if I'm guilty of something I am not.” He pointed to the fact that after his arraignment, he went to Tampa, Florida, for the National League of Cities Centennial Summit “to seek solutions for the city” and to “appear for multiple speaking engagements.” “[I want] our residents to know that, as I've said, ‘I'm not only innocent, but I'm going to fight those charges and I'll let my attorneys handle that,'” he said. “I owe them a responsibility, and so I'm going to make certain I maintain and adhere to that responsibility.” “We're still working, we're still meeting, we're still seeking solutions to the problems that face Jackson residents every day... I'm grateful to have a team around me that can focus in.” Lumumba is charged with conspiracy, federal program bribery, the use of an interstate facility in aid of racketeering, honest services wire fraud, and money laundering after he allegedly accepted $50,000 in bribes to benefit developers wanting to bring a convention center hotel to Jackson. The developers, who claimed to be with Facility Solutions Team out of Hendersonville, Tennessee, turned out to be confidential human sources with the FBI. The mayor told Director of Communications Melissa Faith Payne during the roughly 30-minute episode that this was not the first time he's been investigated by the agency, and that he's dealt with the FBI “my entire life.” “We were often surveilled. To this day, I actually have FOIA documents to demonstrate that... I've seen my high school pictures in FBI documents, [pictures from] my mother's funeral in FBI documents, details on my parents' relationship in FBI documents,” he said. “Unfortunately, it's not uncommon to me... It's not something I want for my children. I really have to question what family, or anybody, would justify that level of scrutiny, that level of investment, to follow a family that long,” he continued. “It is not something that is foreign territory to me.” Lumumba is in his second term as Jackson's mayor. He was first elected in 2017 and re-elected by a landslide in 2021. He is the son of the late Nubia and Chokwe Lumumba, a civil rights attorney and activist who died in 2014, about eight months into his first and only term in office.

This is an (almost) unedited version of our livestream with Kali Akuno from this morning (11/10/24) Here Kali Akuno offers thoughts on where we go from here after the re-election of Trump. Our previous video discussion with Kali Akuno provides more of the nuts and bolts of the type of organizing he's callling for, but this conversation underscores the urgency of this program now that we are in the reality (at least in terms of electoral politics and control of government) that he predicted would come to pass.  Kali Akuno is a cofounder and codirector of Cooperation Jackson. He was the director of special projects and external funding in the mayoral administration of the late Chokwe Lumumba of Jackson, MS. His focus in this role was supporting cooperative development, the introduction of eco-friendly and carbon reduction methods of operation, and the promotion of human rights and international relations for the city. Akuno has also served as the codirector of the U.S. Human Rights Network, and the executive director of the Peoples' Hurricane Relief Fund (PHRF) based in New Orleans, after Hurricane Katrina. He was a cofounder of the School of Social Justice and Community Development (SSJCD), a public school serving the academic needs of low-income African American and Latino communities in Oakland. Since the rise of Trump in 2016 debate has increased in liberal and left political spaces pertaining to the rise of a fascist moment in America. Jackson, Mississippi Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba has a vision that distinguishes him from most elected officials in the United States, even from most progressive elected officials. He is not afraid of the world radical, in fact he relishes discussions about what it means to go to the root of challenging issues, to identify the sources of injustice, and to address them. Mayor Lumumba comes from an activist family, his father, Chokwe Lumumba, was a legendary figure in Jackson and nationally, a brilliant lawyer, and organizer with the Republic of New Afrika and other groups on behalf of communities that have been let down by both major parties. The senior Lumumba warned against imagining that answers would come from distant political figures. He believed in building from the grassroots up. Eventually, he was elected mayor of Jackson in 2013, a victory that drew national attention because of what it said about the opening up of American politics, especially in the south. He was described as America’s most revolutionary mayor. When he died less than a year after taking office, his son ran to replace him, and lost. That defeat did not dissuade Chokwe Antar Lumumba, he kept speaking up, organizing, and campaigning. In 2017, running on a people’s platform and an agenda of social justice, economic democracy, he won the mayoralty by a landslide, taking 94% of the general election vote. He promised to make Jackson the most radical city on the planet. As mayor, he has stood up to Donald Trump, and he has taken on national issues, but his primary focus has been on the grassroots work of delivering services, people-powered budgeting, and community empowerment. Chokwe Antar Lumumba, the mayor of Jackson, Mississippi, is our guest this week on Next Left. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Akinyele Omowale Umoja. A professor of African-American studies at Georgia State University, Dr. Umoja invested decades researching the history of White Supremacy in this area of the world as well as the history of black resistance. We'll discuss his 2014 publication, We Will Shoot Back: Armed Resistance and the Mississippi Freedom Movement. The book details centuries of White Terrorism targeting black people, but quickly inserts the equally long tradition of black people arming themselves and, despite overwhelming odds, striking back against Racist violence. Dr. Umoja's text is an effort to counter the narrative that black southerners were too compliant and passive to subscribe to counter-violence. Importantly, the book details how black females were just as vested in the armed protection of black people as black males. Although, Dr. Umoja's work focuses on black resistance in Mississippi, their resilience was mirrored elsewhere. This is a supremely important bit of scholarship because so many Victims of White Supremacy have been convinced into believing that black people are cowardly chumps, who've never fought back against White savagery. Racist entertainment like the 2012 film Django Unchained helps re-enforce this lie. We Will Shoot Back also demonstrates that frequently, when black people defended their lives and property, Whites got busy producing Justice and countering Racism because they did not want to see White lives lost. We'll also be sure to include commentary on the late Chokwe Lumumba. INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#
