Christ Addresses Christian Disciplines.
Thank you for joining Word of Life's Online Campus. Today we are starting a new series entitled "Practicing". It's all about the practices of a follower of Jesus Christ. Traditionally these practices are called Christian Disciplines, but that makes me think about getting in trouble. These are not activities intended to punish you or a check list to measure your holiness. These practices are the life rhythms of a Christ follower. Practicing our faith is about growing in our dependence on God and his grace. Recorded live at Word of Life Church in Le Sueur, Minnesota, on October 6, 2024, Pastor Jason Lang preaching.
Philippians 3:8-14 Motivation for the Christian Disciplines: God's Grace
John 1:12-13 The Grounds for Christian Disciplines: Adoption
Jeremiah 28-29:13 The Goal of Christian Disciplines: God's Glory
Ephesians 4:17-5:17 The Christian Disciplines: Abandon & Adopt
In a culture of "hustle," how do we think through the things that are vying for our attention. How can you create more space in our life to pay attention to God so you aren't weight down by the feeling of inadequacy? Today we talk about pastor Mason King about new book—Christian Disciplines—and some of the practices he's found to be instrumental in cultivating a relationship with God. The Christian life is the expression of our personal love relationship with the Lord. The spiritual disciplines are for the purpose of drawing closer to God, and deepening our relationship with Him, and thereby growing spiritually. Derek shares how to introduce a new believer to the life of a disciple of Jesus, based on God's love and grace to them. It's all about loving God based on His amazing love for us, and this includes spending time with Him in the Bible and Prayer. Our love for God will also cause us to want to please and glorify Him in the way we life our life. Derek points out the 2 opposite ditches of indiscipline and legalism. When we love God we give Him our heart, and this will be naturally expressed in a disciplined life of seeking God, and obeying His revealed will.

The essence of the Christian life is our love relationship with God rather than following a list of rules. A disciple is a follower of the Person of Jesus, who wants to be as close as possible to Him. This does involve discipline. There are important disciplines that are part of being a disciple, like Bible reading and having a devotional time with God every day, with praise, prayer and confession, being faithful in Church, and finding ways to serve God and people. But we do not do them for their own sake but as expressions of our love for the Lord, in order to be close to Jesus and glorify Him. We are precious to the Lord. Above all, He wants our heart. He wants us to give Him our heart, which starts by opening (the ears of) our heart to Him, to receive His words of love and His grace to us, for our ears are the receivers of our heart (Isaiah 55:1-3). Then as He fills us with Himself (His life and love), He takes possession of our hearts by his Spirit (Presence), and our hearts become fully His, so that we then love Him with all our heart.

This follows up on the Rule of Life teaching. Now we populate the Rule with eremitic disciplines, namely solitude, silence, and reposed prayer (waiting prayer). Fasting is included in here as well as it is the underlying value of all these type of disciplines. Mark 1:35 “Early in the morning…”
Pastor Tom Grieb continues our series "Old Habits/New Habits."Bible study is one of those “holy habits” that every one of us would do well to make a part of our lives. God is able to speak through his word in ways he is able to do no other way. God is able to both challenge and inspire us through scripture. Through scripture God is able to guide our way and provide a mooring in uncertain and choppy waters. The Psalmist writes in Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” I am thankful for the guidance God provides in his word. Whenever I read scripture, I ask myself, “What is God saying to me?” and “What am I going to do about it?” These two questions put me to listening intently and preparing my heart to act. James writes in James 1:22, “Do not merely listen to the word. Do what it says.” Through his word God not only speaks but prepares our hearts to act. In the end, Bible study is not so much about information, but transformation that leads to God's good work being done in and through us.

Discipline for the Christian is a must! Think of it this way, we need "spritiual disciplines for the Christian life." I didn't think up this phrase. It's actually the title of a book in my library. The authors are Donald S. Whitney and the forward is by J. I. Packer, two writers with whom we are very familiar. The word "discipline" can carry a negative connotation and brings to mind punishment. While growing up, I was diciplined by my parents. Even today, I am still being disciplined by my Heavenly Father to whom I belong. Hebrews 12:11 (NIV) says, "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." Discipline also means teach, coach, and drill. Those words shed light on what we must consider doing to grow in godliness. Join us Tuesday, February 25, 2020, at 3:30 PM, PST.We will talk about practicing 10 basic spiritual disciplines that will help us get out of the weeds so we can start producing a harvest. It's so easy to forget. In fact, it seems like our society encourages a consumer mentality that keeps us thinking only about what we don't yet have. We willingly sell all of our most precious commodity, TIME, to get a little more of the elusive things that will 'make us happy'. We become slaves to what we want and the methods required to get them, while becoming more and more ungrateful for what we have. We used to take a day every week to just "give thanks", but now we trade that day of worship and family and rest to work for a few more bucks. Maybe we will be able to buy that new car, or afford another entertainment device, never realizing that we have sold our time needed to enjoy what we 'get'! The epilogue of the series, The Domino Effect, reminds us to reclaim our Time and redeem our attitudes with Christian Disciplines that open up Joys found, relationships rekindled, Rest restored. Remember these wonderful things that promise to bring us life and that more Abundant!
