March is Women's History Month and in this episode of Talking Taiwan I'll be speaking with the Angela Feng, the organizer of the Empowering Women Through Education and Community Action panel, a UN CSW69 Parallel Event that's going to be held here in New York City on Friday, March 14th from 4:30pm-6:00pm. CSW69 stands for the 69th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Also with me in this interview are the other two panelists Cindy Wu who's been a previous guest on Talking Taiwan and Dr. Remi Duyile.   There are quite a few acronyms tossed around in this conversation so I thought I'd mention them upfront here like SDG goals, which stands for Sustainable Development Goals which were adopted by United Nations Member States. There are 17 SDGs because ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.   The other acronym you'll hear is BPW which stands for Business and Professional Women.   The theme of the panel is how education and community initiatives equal empowerment. The session will dive into how education and grassroots programs can transform lives.   Angela, Cindy and Dr. Remi not only talked about the panel, and work of their respective organizations, but I ask each of the women who were their earliest role models who helped to shape who they are today, and to share about challenges that they've had to overcome in their careers thus far.   If you'd like to know how you can attend the Empowering Women Through Education and Community Action panel visit TalkingTaiwan.com where we'll share a link to register for it on Eventbrite.   Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: ·  Angela Feng, Cindy Wu, and Dr. Remi Duyile are the organizers and panelists for the Empowering Women Through Education and Community Action Panel. ·  The panel's theme is "How Education and Community Initiatives Equal Empowerment." ·  The session will explore how education and grassroots programs can significantly transform lives, particularly for women and girls. ·  Angela Feng is the president of Soroptimist Taipei International, Girls Power, a female non-profit organization recognized by the UN and Taiwan. ·  Cindy Wu is a trilingual financial management professional, singer-songwriter, and motivational speaker, involved with the International Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW). ·  Dr. Remi Duyile is a Nigerian-American, a UN ambassador of peace, and the founder of Legacy Premier Foundation, a global developmental non-profit. ·  The discussion will delve into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how these goals relate to women's empowerment ·  Angela, Cindy and Dr. Remi the work that they have done with each of their respective organizations ·  Angela, Cindy and Dr. Remi talked about their early role models and the challenges they have overcome in their careers. ·  The panel aims to provide practical insights and inspire action, moving beyond abstract concepts of women's empowerment. ·  The women want to provide action steps, and resources to the audience ·  Soroptimist International of Taipei Girls Power focuses on education for young women, from elementary school through college. ·  The Legacy Premier Foundation focuses on financial literacy, and providing access to resources to underserved communities, and teaches skills that are needed in the market place. ·  The International Federation of Business and Professional Women works to create opportunities for women through promoting employment, and protecting rights.   Related Links:

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The Local Interaction Basis: Identifying Computationally-Relevant and Sparsely Interacting Features in Neural Networks, published by Marius Hobbhahn on May 20, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. This is a linkpost for our two recent papers, produced at Apollo Research in collaboration with Kaarel Hanni (Cadenza Labs), Avery Griffin, Joern Stoehler, Magdalena Wache and Cindy Wu: 1. An exploration of using degeneracy in the loss landscape for interpretability https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.10927 2. An empirical test of an interpretability technique based on the loss landscape https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.10928 Not to be confused with Apollo's recent Sparse Dictionary Learning paper. A key obstacle to mechanistic interpretability is finding the right representation of neural network internals. Optimally, we would like to derive our features from some high-level principle that holds across different architectures and use cases. At a minimum, we know two things: 1. We know that the training loss goes down during training. Thus, the features learned during training must be determined by the loss landscape. We want to use the structure of the loss landscape to identify what the features are and how they are represented. 2. We know that models generalize, i.e. that they learn features from the training data that allow them to accurately predict on the test set. Thus, we want our interpretation to explain this generalization behavior. Generalization has been linked to basin broadness in the loss landscape in several ways, most notably including singular learning theory, which introduces the learning coefficient as a measure of basin broadness that doubles as a measure of generalization error that replaces the parameter count in Occam's razor. Inspired by both of these ideas, the first paper explores using the structure of the loss landscape to find the most computationally natural representation of a network. We focus on identifying parts of the network that are not responsible for low loss (i.e. degeneracy), inspired by singular learning theory. These degeneracies are an obstacle for interpretability as they mean there exist parameters which do not affect the input-output behavior in the network (similar to the parameters of a Transformer WV and WO matrices that do not affect the product WOV). We explore 3 different ways neural network parameterisations can be degenerate: 1. when activations are linearly dependent 2. when gradient vectors are linearly dependent 3. when ReLU neurons fire on the same inputs. This investigation leads to the interaction basis, and eventually the local interaction basis (LIB) that we test in the second paper. This basis removes computationally irrelevant features and interactions, and sparsifies the remaining interactions between layers. Finally, we analyse how modularity is connected to degeneracy in the loss landscape. We suggest a preliminary metric for finding the sorts of modules that the neural network prior is biased towards. The second paper tests how useful the LIB is in toy and language models. In this new basis we calculate integrated gradient based interactions between features, and analyse the graph of all features in a network. We interpret strongly-interacting features, and identify modules in this graph using the modularity metric of the first paper. To derive the LIB basis we coordinate-transform the activations of neural networks in two steps: Step 1 is a transformation into the PCA basis, removing activation space directions which don't explain any variance. Step 2 is a transformation of the activations to align the basis with the right singular vectors of the gradient vector dataset. The 2nd step is the key new ingredient which aims to make interactions between adjacent layers sparse, and removes directions which do not affect downstre...

Forumosa is an online discussion forum for English-speakers about Taiwan and in full disclosure, they have been a sponsor of Talking Taiwan.   I was wondering what all the controversy was about so I spoke to my friend Cindy about it and this led to a discussion about how foreigners are viewed in Taiwan and oddly enough the discrimination that overseas Taiwanese sometimes experience in Taiwan.     Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode:   One of the most popular podcasts in Taiwan the 百靈果(Bilingual) News Podcast How an episode of the 百靈果(Bailingguo) News Podcast generated a lot of discussion amongst the English-speaking expat community in an online discussion forum on Forumosa.com What the discussion on Forumosa.com was about If the slang term lao wai (老外) that refers to foreigners in Taiwan is insulting What makes the 百靈果(Bailingguo) News Podcast so controversial How people have compared the style of the hosts of the 百靈果(Bilingual) News Podcast to Joe Rogan and Howard Stern Why the English-speaking expat community on Forumosa.com were upset by the episode People's opinions of the 百靈果(Bailingguo) News Podcast The discrimination that foreigners experience in Taiwan The discrimination that some overseas Taiwanese experience in Taiwan     Related Links: To view all related links for this article, click link below: https://talkingtaiwan.com/bilingual-podcast-discrimination-that-overseas-taiwanese-experience-in-taiwan-talking-with-cindy-wu-ep-166/

In this episode, I’m interviewing Cindy Wu. My good friend Cindy is the Honorary President of the HK Baptist University School of Chinese Medicine and the Vincent & Lily Woo Foundation, She is also the Head Martial Arts teacher at the Mandarin Flagship Hotel in which she specialises in Qi Gong. Both Cindy and Cindy’s grandmother Mrs. Lily Woo are amazing women. Lily Woo was the Director of Po Leung Kuk (which is an organisation here in Hong Kong that supports orphaned children, education and other charitable services) When I mentioned to Cindy about She Means Bizness, both Cindy and I agreed that we had to tell her grandmother’s story. Mrs.Lily Woo was a woman who fully embodies, “She Means Bizness”. For Cindy, “She Means Bizness” makes her think of a female who knows exactly what she wants; a woman who doesn’t mess around. A woman who sees a target and goes for it and doesn’t get deviated. Cindy also appreciates that nowadays it is socially acceptable for women to be entrepreneurs or to go into business. Some say that Mrs. Lily Woo was born in the wrong era. She had all the ingredients to be a successful business person but during her time it was not socially acceptable for a woman to be a successful business person. Now, we are so blessed to have the opportunities we have and the possibilities are endless. Cindy's Message:We are fortunate to be born in an era in which it is okay for us women to succeed at what we are good at. We have all the resources and all the emotional support to achieve everything that our grandmothers wish they could have done. How do you feel about funding scientific research, particularly medical research? How efficient, effective and fair is the grant system in deploying billions of taxpayer dollars? Are funds targeted towards diseases proportional to their occurrence in patient populations? Are the influences of disease specific non-profit groups helpful or hurtful? Are the interests and activities of biomedical companies aligned with the needs of you, and your patients? Well, if you think there's room for some serious improvement, today's episode is for you. Cindy Wu was a young undergraduate student at the University of Washington, working on a way to modify an enzyme treatment for anthrax, using a videogame. (which, by the way, is a heck of a lot more than I was doing in college) Eager to find funding for her idea, Cindy approached her professor. “Cindy, [he responded] the system doesn’t fund people like you...It only funds tenured professors.” Although he ended up helping her by sharing money from one of his own research grants, Cindy had taken her first glance at the huge world of underfunded, and undiscovered science. Cindy wanted to do something, but she needed help. She discussed the problem with her friend, Denny Luan, a fellow student with a software background. The amazing solution they came up with was pitched to silicon valley investors in 2013, at Y Combinator. That three minute pitch brought in 1.2 million dollars in initial startup funds, and Experiment.com, a unique crowd funding platform for scientific research was born. Like early stage investing, it's easy to see this space as early stage research. Bill Gates has described Experiment as a, "solution [that] helps close the gap for potential and promising, but unfunded projects." Most research in gap can be funded by as little as 5 to 10 thousand dollars! We know what you're thinking. 5-10 grand? Maybe for a university science fair, but certainly not for legitimate medical research. As we're seeing though, technologies such as CRISPR gene editing, 3D printing and artificial intelligence are already lowering the costs and barriers to researchers in ways that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. This will only continue, and companies like Experiment are leading the way into this undiscovered country. With that said, we're happy to bring you the founders of Experiment, Cindy Wu and Denny Luan....
