Halacha follows the opinion that "Misvot Serichot Kavana" – meaning, one who performs a Misva must have this purpose in mind in order to fulfill his obligation. Thus, for example, before one begins reciting Shema, he must pause and think for a moment in his mind that he prepares to fulfill the Torah obligation to recite the daily Shema. This applies to both the daytime and nighttime Shema recitations. In some situations, a person does not have specific intention that he fulfills a Misva, but it is clear from the setting and context that this is his objective. For example, even if a person forgets to specifically think about the Misva before he begins reciting Shema, it is abundantly clear that one who comes to the synagogue, dons Tallit and Tefillin, and recites the prayers from the Siddur has in mind to fulfill the Misva. The Mishna Berura (Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan, 1839-1933) cites a number of Halachic authorities who rule that one fulfills his obligation in such a case. Even though one must Le'chatehila (optimally) have specific intention to fulfill the Misva, he nevertheless fulfills his obligation even without this intent if it is clear from context that he performs the given act for this purpose. (The Mishna Berura proves this conclusion from a number of Talmudic passages.) Other examples where this ruling would apply are eating in a Sukka and shaking a Lulab on Sukkot. Even if a person does not have specific intention to fulfill the Misva, it is obvious that he eats in the Sukka or shakes the Lulab for the purpose of the Misva, and he thus fulfills his obligation even without specific intent. It must be emphasized, however, that this applies only "Be'di'abad" (after the fact). Optimally, one must, indeed, have specific intention before performing a Misva that he performs the given act for the purpose of the Misva. The Be'ur Halacha (supplementary essays accompanying the Mishna Berura) notes that for many people, it would, indeed, be necessary – even "Be'di'abad" – to have specific intention before reciting the nighttime Shema. It is very common during the summer months for congregations to recite Arbit before sunset. Since the Misva of the nighttime Shema takes effect only at nightfall, those who recite Arbit before sunset do not fulfill their Shema obligation at Arbit; they must repeat Shema later, after dark. For such people, then, reciting Shema during the Arbit service in the synagogue is not necessarily done for the purpose of fulfilling the Misva. Since they frequently recite Arbit before sundown, when they cannot fulfill the Shema obligation, it cannot be assumed that they have in mind to fulfill the Misva of Shema when they recite Shema during Arbit. Therefore, if a person who normally recites Arbit before sundown happens on one occasion to recite Arbit after dark, he does not fulfill his obligation of Shema in Arbit unless he has specific intention to fulfill the Misva. Without specific intention, it cannot be assumed that he recites Shema for this purpose, since he normally recites Shema in Arbit without fulfilling the Misva. In this case, then, one who recites Shema without specific intention would have to repeat Shema. Summary: One who performs a Misva must first think in his mind that he performs the given act for the purpose of fulfilling the Misva. However, if he did not have this specific intention, he nevertheless fulfills his obligation if it is clear from the setting and context that this was his purpose in performing the act. Thus, for example, one must think before reciting Shema that he does so for the purpose of the Misva, but if he did not have this intention, he nevertheless fulfills the Misva since it is obvious that he recites Shema for this purpose. The exception to this rule is the case of somebody who normally prays Arbit before sundown, when he cannot fulfill the obligation of the nighttime Arbit. If such a person happens one time to recite Arbit after dark, he does not fulfill his Shema obligation in Arbit unless he has specific intention to this effect.

An exploration of using degeneracy in the loss landscape for interpretability https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.10927 2. An empirical test of an interpretability technique based on the loss landscape https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.10928 Not to be confused with Apollo's recent Sparse Dictionary Learning paper. A key obstacle to mechanistic interpretability is finding the right representation of neural network internals. Optimally, we would like to derive our features from some high-level principle that holds across different architectures and use cases. At a minimum, we know two things: 1. We know that the training loss goes down during training. Thus, the features learned during training must be determined by the loss landscape. We want to use the structure of the loss landscape to identify what the features are and how they are represented. 2. We know that models generalize, i.e. that they learn features from the training data that allow them to accurately predict on the test set. Thus, we want our interpretation to explain this generalization behavior. Generalization has been linked to basin broadness in the loss landscape in several ways, most notably including singular learning theory, which introduces the learning coefficient as a measure of basin broadness that doubles as a measure of generalization error that replaces the parameter count in Occam's razor. Inspired by both of these ideas, the first paper explores using the structure of the loss landscape to find the most computationally natural representation of a network. We focus on identifying parts of the network that are not responsible for low loss (i.e. degeneracy), inspired by singular learning theory. These degeneracies are an obstacle for interpretability as they mean there exist parameters which do not affect the input-output behavior in the network (similar to the parameters of a Transformer WV and WO matrices that do not affect the product WOV). We explore 3 different ways neural network parameterisations can be degenerate: 1. when activations are linearly dependent 2. when gradient vectors are linearly dependent 3. when ReLU neurons fire on the same inputs. This investigation leads to the interaction basis, and eventually the local interaction basis (LIB) that we test in the second paper. This basis removes computationally irrelevant features and interactions, and sparsifies the remaining interactions between layers. Finally, we analyse how modularity is connected to degeneracy in the loss landscape. We suggest a preliminary metric for finding the sorts of modules that the neural network prior is biased towards. The second paper tests how useful the LIB is in toy and language models. In this new basis we calculate integrated gradient based interactions between features, and analyse the graph of all features in a network. We interpret strongly-interacting features, and identify modules in this graph using the modularity metric of the first paper. To derive the LIB basis we coordinate-transform the activations of neural networks in two steps: Step 1 is a transformation into the PCA basis, removing activation space directions which don't explain any variance. Step 2 is a transformation of the activations to align the basis with the right singular vectors of the gradient vector dataset. Generally speaking, one may not ask a gentile on Shabbat to perform an activity that is forbidden for Jews on Shabbat. Thus, for example, it is forbidden to ask a gentile to turn on a light, or to drive to pick up something for him. There are, however, a number of important exceptions to this rule. Firstly, one may ask a gentile to turn on a light if there is a child present who is afraid of the dark and inconsolably frightened. Halacha allows asking a gentile to perform a Melacha (activity forbidden on Shabbat) if this is necessary for the care of an ill patient, and all children are considered "Holim" ("ill") in this regard. For the needs of a frightened child, then, it is permissible to ask a gentile to perform a Melacha – even an act that is forbidden for a Jew on Shabbat by force of Torah law. Hence, it is permissible to ask a non-Jewish housekeeper, for example, to turn on a light if a child is in distress due to the dark. Asking a gentile to perform Melacha on Shabbat is also allowed in the case of cold conditions. Halacha considers all people "ill" with regard to cold temperatures, due to the potential to fall ill from exposure to the cold. Therefore, it is permissible to ask a gentile to turn on the heat if the home is cold. Of course, one should make a point of turning the heat on before Shabbat. But if somebody forgot to turn on the heat, or if he was expecting mild conditions and it became cold on Shabbat, he may ask a non-Jew to turn the heat on. With regard to air conditioning, too, there is room to allow asking a non-Jew to turn on the air conditioning if the heat is intolerable. Generally speaking, heat is not considered a potential health risk like the cold, and therefore, under normal circumstances, one may not ask a gentile to turn on an air conditioner or adjust an air conditioner on Shabbat. For example, if the air conditioning is running and one wants the temperature to be lowered another two degrees, he may not ask a gentile to adjust the thermostat. If, however, one did not expect hot conditions, or if a brief power outage disrupted the operation of the air conditioning, and the heat becomes insufferable, on may ask a gentile on Shabbat to turn on the air conditioner. Of course, as mentioned above, heat and air conditioning should be turned on or set before Shabbat; the Halachot discussed here apply only if, for whatever reason, one had not set the unit before Shabbat. Summary: Although it is generally forbidden to ask a gentile to perform on Shabbat any activity that is forbidden for a Jew on Shabbat, it is permissible to ask a gentile to turn on a light if a child is inconsolably distressed because of the dark. It is also permissible to ask a gentile to turn on the heat under cold conditions, or to turn on an air conditioner in situations of severe heat. Optimally, though, one should make a point of setting the heat or air conditioning before Shabbat.

LShanda talks about the significant mental and physical aspects involved in breastfeeding “success” and what “success” even means in this situation. She discusses how lactation consultants can help people with under or over supply of milk due to hypothyroidism, diabetes, breast surgery, etc. LaShanda advocates for creating your “village” of people to help you stay nourished and take care of you and your home so that you can focus on breastfeeding. Especially in the early days, breastfeeding can be a round-the-clock activity as newborns have tiny tummies and need to feed often. After the birth of her daughter in 2009, LaShanda's passion for breastfeeding and supporting mothers and families in the postpartum period blossomed. She became a trained postpartum doula while pursuing her IBCLC credential. LaShanda currently provides lactation support prenatally and postpartum via virtual visits and in person support groups. She has supported families of all diverse, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds throughout NYC. Highlights from the March 2023 Global Update from the Global Technical and Regulatory Affairs team at the Almond Board of California. ABC participation in the Gulfood Show ABC exhibited in the USA Pavilion at the Gulfood show in Dubai during the week of Feb 20. The USA Pavilion included 158 U.S. companies and associations including nine almond exporters. The show hosted over 5,000 exhibitors from 125 countries and was attended by over 2 million commercial visitors. Many of them expressed interest in almonds! It seems almond demand in the Middle East and across Africa is higher than ever. We had visitors from the beginning to end of the show waiting in line to ask us questions about the industry, particularly related to finding suppliers and technical information. The entire region continues to grow, with California almond shipments to UAE increasing from $193 m in CY2020 to $310 m in CY2022. The FAS offices in Pakistan and Turkey sent delegations by our booth to discuss the market, market access issues and future cooperation opportunities. Other visitors included buyers and processors from Russia, Ukraine, Algeria, Cyprus, India, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, etc. A logistics company from Dubai's Al Ras wholesale market shared a google map link that shows how product moves from Dubai to Afghanistan and other ports in the area. Check it out here. FAS/Dubai also led a tour of the DMCC Tea and Coffee Processing Center at the local Port's FTZ. DMCC is partially owned by the UAE government and has years of experience in trading/processing gold and diamonds. More than 240 importers and processors attended the meeting this year. Starting with a regulatory update, discussions focused on the greatest impediments to the market which were identified through a survey of Indian trade. Retaliatory tariffs and FSSAI regulation were among the key concerns. The need to form alliances and engage through Indian partners was highlighted as an important means of addressing concerns. Considerable interest was expressed in the crop status, particularly insights from a California handler panel. While everyone is waiting to see how the California crop progresses, there was considerable optimism related to the long-term growth potential of the India market. This carried into the presentation of ABC marketing initiatives in India. Building on a strong tradition and culture, programs are expanding to encompass more health influencers. Other opportunities exist in ingredients, which are a growing sector for almonds, as well as expanding into rural India.Great Britain PEC CertificateGreat Britain (GB) is in the process of reviewing/revising regulations that it retained from the European Union (EU) post-Brexit. This includes EU regulation 2015/1949, which governs the Pre-Export Check (PEC) program that recognizes California Almonds for a reduced inspection rate upon arrival in the EU. ABC has been made aware of a GB-specific version of the Pre-Export Check certificate to accompany California almond exports to Great Britain. ABC contacted both UK Port Authority and FAS staff to ensure no shipments are detained pending an agreement between GB and USA. USDA has advised that UK authorities have agreed to accept the current PEC certificate while the situation is being reviewed. Optimally, UK import control authorities will agree to use the existing PEC system with slight modifications to satisfy GB requirements. This week the topic is: Comparing the effect of concurrent resistance and endurance training with that of resistance training only on the development of maximal dynamic strength in three groups, untrained, moderately trained, and trained individuals.  Study: Development of Maximal Dynamic Strength During Concurrent Resistance and Endurance Training in Untrained, Moderately Trained, and Trained Individuals: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (2021) Results: The authors did find interference with concurrent training in lower body strength gains in trained but not untrained individuals, and it only appears to be an issue when the aerobic and resistance bouts are performed within a short interval of each other (< 20 min). So within the same training session, yes interference, but not when performed separately (> 2 hours). As mentioned, this is not the case for moderately trained or untrained individuals. In these populations, concurrent resistance and endurance training did not have a negative effect on lower-body strength development. Ellie describes her ideal client as anyone without a preexisting medical condition who wants to improve their health. She takes each client on a highly personalized journey to a lifestyle change that is effective and sustainable. What Are The Ten Healthy Habits With The Highest ROI? 1. Focus on getting 10,000 steps a day, preferably outdoors. 2. Start drinking ½ of your body weight in ounces of pure water per day. 3. Eat as close to your ideal or actual body weight in grams of protein as you can per day. 4. Track a day or a week of the foods you eat for awareness purposes. 5. Go to bed and wake up roughly around the same time each day with a minimum of 7 hours of sleep. 6. Buy a fitness tracker and ignore the part about “Calories Burned” during a workout. 7. Buy a protein powder that you love. 8. Find your “tribe” when it comes to fitness. Find a fitness routine you love and find a community of people who will help motivate you. 9. Optimally eat 800 grams of fruits and vegetables a day. Aim for at least a cup of vegetables at 2 meals per day. 10. Set your intentions for the day. His father passed away from a stroke, and his brother passed away from a heart attack. Growing up, Dr. Mansor was overweight. During his undergrad, Dr. Mansor learned about physiology and metabolism. Plus, during college, Dr. Mansor started to exercise and actually enjoyed exercise for the first time in his life. With all this knowledge, Dr. Mansor realized he could be healthy without worrying about the diseases his family members suffered from.  [10:35] Why Are 88% of American Adults Metabolically Inflexible?  Your nerves have a higher risk of getting damaged when there is a constant increase in elevated glucose in the blood. Your body knows something is wrong with increased glucose, which triggers chronic inflammation. Metabolism is all about balance and moderation.  Every enzyme has a specific temperature range at which it's optimal.  When you activate inflammation constantly, there are bound to be adverse side effects.  [15:35] Life Is All About Challenges and Growth - Use Trial and Error To Find Your Sweet Spot  Life is all about giving yourself a challenge, adapting, learning, and growing. Next time you face the same challenge, you can tackle it in a much more efficient way.  It can be difficult to find the sweet spot when you are challenging yourself. Dr. Mansor uses a trial and error approach when it comes to knowing his sweet spot while exercising.  Your body will adapt. People want instant change; however, you need to give your body time to change.  [22:40] You Need To Train Your Body To Respond To Certain Conditions Effectively and Optimally  Metabolic inflexibility is your body's inability to switch from burning glucose to burning fat. When there is dysfunction, there is bound to be a deficiency, and there is bound to be wasted energy. Everyone thinks cortisol is the bad guy; however, you need cortisol to function.  The goal is not to shut down whatever is related to chronic disease. Instead, you want to train your body to respond to specific conditions effectively and optimally.  [30:20] Exogenous Ketones Are a Source of Energy and Can Help Lower Your Hunger Hormones Ketones are fuel for you to create energy.  There are still calories with exogenous ketones.  You won't lose weight if you have too many calories and are not exercising.  Ghrelin is the hunger hormone. Ketones can help lower that hunger hormone. [36:05] Exogenous Ketones Are Useful For Getting Back Into Ketosis  If you are following a ketogenic diet, you may not need exogenous ketones. However, do you have a hard time getting back into ketosis? If you fall out of ketosis, exogenous ketones can be a helpful way for you to get back into ketosis. Exogenous ketones are also a great tool to use before exercising.  [43:20] The Brain Doesn't Metabolize Glucose As Efficiently After A Traumatic Brain Injury  Dr. Mansor researched how ketones can be a therapeutic intervention to treat traumatic brain injury. Within 48 hours, studies show hypermetabolism of glucose after trauma.  Some researchers think the body wants glucose for energy to repair.  Ketones can help give the brain another option to produce energy.  For some reason, the brain doesn't metabolize glucose as efficiently after a traumatic brain injury.  [55:55] Ketone-IQ Is A Useful Biohack To Improve Your Sleep and Recover Faster  A dose of ketones after a workout and a dose of ketones before sleep can be helpful for recovery.  Plus, ketones before sleep can improve sleep quality.  Ketone-IQ has been proven to support energy, focus, and endurance.
