PayPal study reveals almost half (46%) of Irish consumers would prefer to send money to avoid buying Christmas gifts

PayPal has announced the findings of a new study which found that almost half (46%) of Irish consumers would prefer to send money to family/friends so they wouldn't have to buy gifts this Christmas. This preference was most popular among Gen Z respondents (50%). The research - conducted by Censuswide and involving 1,001 consumers across Ireland - also revealed that more than three-quarters (78%) would prefer to spend quality time with friends and family rather than buying them gifts this Christmas. This time, Gen X was most inclined to express this sentiment (81%). Festive finances & not-so-silent nights Despite the implied desire to move away from the tradition of buying Christmas gifts, the average expected spend per person on presents came in at €525. When it comes to the counties, people from Carlow (€780), Kildare (€692), and Meath (€674) expect to spend most. Furthermore, 49% of people surveyed feel under pressure to spend more than planned/budgeted based on what others are spending. It also appears that people are eager to get their Christmas shopping, with two-thirds (66%) predicting they will have theirs finished by the second week of December1. Just 14%2 appear to be last-minute shoppers, completing their purchases during Christmas week or on Christmas Eve. As well as gifting, 47% of Irish consumers surveyed expect to spend more on social events and gatherings this festive season. The average anticipated spend was estimated to be €339, with respondents from Kildare (€428), Dublin (€385) and Mayo (€376) set to spend most on such outings. Sharing is caring Given the expectations around spending, there seems to be a shift towards sharing the load - and cost - when it comes to gifting. In fact, 63% of Irish consumers surveyed will engage in bill-splitting or group purchases. The top bill splitting activities were revealed to be nights out (47%), family gifts (37%), and Christmas dinner (35%). When paying people back, 46% of people typically round up, while just over a third (36%) would pay people back to the exact cent. At the other end of the scale, 45% revealed that they have previously not been paid back by friends or family for a gift or activity during the festive season. Moreover, 58% felt too awkward to ask for money they were owed, so they didn't mention it. Loud budgeting Something people aren't feeling awkward about is loud budgeting (being honest with others about their finances) - with 47% saying they would feel comfortable telling friends or family they haven't budgeted for a specific activity or gift and almost a third (32%) having told friends as much previously over the festive season. Speaking about the findings, Jonas Breding, General Manager Northern Europe, PayPal, said: "While it is a time of year when people are spending and when some are feeling more financial pressure than usual, people's preferences and behaviours are changing. As well as more convenient and cost-effective ways of treating friends and family at this time of year, people are also opting to do activities with, rather than buying things for their loved ones. "Consumers in Ireland want to make the most of the festive season, but they also want to be smart and realistic regarding their budgets. We know that being able to send money or split bills3 via person-to-person payments is important, as well as feeling empowered and vocal when it comes to priorities for this festive season." Even folks who have been following a comprehensive financial plan and building wealth for decades can struggle with the idea of cashing their final paychecks and living off their nest eggs. So, I understand why a headline like "New study finds many seniors who retire at 65 will run out of money" can make some folks question their retirement plans. On today's show, we unpack the details of that study and discuss a practical approach to preparing for and enjoying your golden years.

SD Worx survey research almost half of employees in Ireland suffer from financial stress

SD Worx, formerly Intelligo, a leading payroll and HR solutions provider, has announced the results of its latest research which reveals the high levels of financial stress being felt by employees in Ireland. It found that nearly half (44%) of employees in Ireland are experiencing financial stress, while a third (33%) do not believe that their organisation shows concern for their financial wellbeing or reducing this stress. The independent study was commissioned by SD Worx and carried out by iVOX among 1,000 employees in Ireland to gain insights into their financial concerns and wellbeing. As the cost of living continues to rise, 41% of those surveyed believe that their employer did not adequately compensate for inflation last year, while 44% said that they would like to be able to request a salary advance. Just 28% of workers feel like they have a significant influence in their salary negotiations. SD Worx, which has software solutions that can support dynamic salary adjustments, including inflation-based salary reviews, found that many employees in Ireland believe they are not adequately compensated. Some 27% say they are dissatisfied with their complete reward package, which includes their salary, bonus, and other fringe benefits such as health insurance. The same percentage are not satisfied with the monetary part of their package such as the base salary and bonus. Meanwhile, 29% reported that personal performance is not sufficiently rewarded within their workplace. The survey also suggests that financial stress among employees can have a major impact on businesses. Some 23% of employees say that they would leave a job if they were dissatisfied with their financial stability and job security. Eimear Byrne, Country Leader, SD Worx Ireland, said: "In the current economic climate, organisations must take into account the impact that adequate rewards packages have on employees' financial wellbeing. Our research shows that employees are grappling with rising costs and are concerned with their financial stability. When not reflected by proportionate salary increases, the increasing cost of living amplifies the stress and pressure that employees and their families are placed under. "It's crucial that employers take a step back and understand the influence that this stress can have on their employees, both inside and outside of work. Payroll shouldn't be a silo - payroll and HR are closely linked, and they must work together to ensure a happy and well-rounded workforce. SD Worx's integrated payroll and HR software can enable more efficient salary management to support cost of living adjustments, enhance employees' financial wellbeing through industry insights and benchmarking, and adjust rewards packages to more accurately reflect individual performance - providing a holistic approach to improving the employee experience." A new report found Michigan school districts spent their COVID-19 funds similarly to their general budget, with nearly half spent on employee compensation and benefits. A Mackinac Center for Public Policy report shows how school districts have spent $2.5 billion of the $6 billion in federal pandemic aid between the 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years. To help address the challenges of the government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress distributed unprecedented amounts of money to public schools across the country from March 2020 to March 2021. Michigan schools received $6 billion total, with each district receiving varying amounts, ranging from about $500 extra per student to as much as $50,000 per pupil. Almost HALF of all women experience birth trauma. Today, I chat with Audrey Ross of A Joyful Birth about why this might be. Why is it so hard to trust our bodies when it comes to birth? Why are we as a society so scared of birth? How do we break free from the fear and step back into our innate womanly power? Audrey is a birthkeeper, educator of physiologic birth, and a mother. She went from a breech hospital birth with her first, to a homebirth with licensed midwives with her second baby, to a freebirth, and now she's currently journeying through a wild pregnancy (no medical intervention, no scans, etc.) and planning her second freebirth! Together we dive into: Why the hospital might NOT be the safest place to give birth (failure to progress, anyone?!) Pros and cons of homebirth with midwives How to protect yourself and your space in pregnancy and birth Audrey's choice of wild pregnancy and freebirth How to build trust in your body's ability to birth a healthy baby ------------------------- Connect with me on Instagram @carolineofenstein Shop my favorites on my Amazon storefront ------------------------- If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a rating and review!

She insists the party is still a broad church but admits it is a problem that there are no MPs from the left in Keir Starmer's shadow cabinet. She also tells Nish and Coco why she donates almost half of her MP salary to worthy causes - in stark contrast to the Tory MP who resigned from his ministerial role because it didn't pay enough! Coco celebrates the drag artist Crystal for taking down a high-profile right-wing troll, while Nish is left exasperated by the Tory ‘evil plotters' WhatsApp group.
