Episode 196 - Stephen Kurczy. Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Stephen Kurczy. Stephen Kurczy is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Economist, The Christian Science Monitor, and VICE, among other outlets. He graduated from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where he was a 2016-2017 Knight-Bagehot Fellow in Business and Economics Journalism. His fifteen-year career began as a community newspaper reporter, winning top prizes from the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists and the New England Press Association. He has since reported on finance, global affairs, and mega sports events as a foreign correspondent from more than a dozen countries. He has also received recognition from Columbia University for his writing. Kurczy has lived without a cell phone for over a decade. Learn more at stephenkurczy.com or follow him on Twitter @StephenKurczy. About the book: Deep in the Appalachian Mountains lies the last truly quiet town in America. Green Bank, West Virginia, is a place at once futuristic and old-fashioned: It's home to the Green Bank Observatory, where astronomers search the depths of the universe using the latest technology, while schoolchildren go without WiFi or iPads. With a ban on all devices emanating radio frequencies that might interfere with the observatory's telescopes, Quiet Zone residents live a life free from constant digital connectivity. But a community that on the surface seems idyllic is a place of contradictions, where the provincial meets the seemingly supernatural and quiet can serve as a cover for something darker. * Website: http://www.stephenkurczy.com * Buy The Quiet Zone: https://hc.com/thequietzone * You can also buy signed copies here: https://www.banksquarebooks.com/signed-copies * Buy on Indiebound: https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780062945495 * Audiobook prologue: https://soundcloud.com/harperaudio_us/the-quiet-zone-by-stephen-kurczy Note: Guests create their own bio description for each episode. Today we are talking to very special guest Greg Lainas, Senior Vice President of Management Resources at Robert Half and President of the Connecticut Society of CPAs. He is also a character in the novel Flashback by Gary Bravely, an Accidental Accountant, and a world-class networker. Whether you’re a student looking for your first job or a professional who hasn’t had to look for a job in over 20 years, Greg has a lot of really useful information.   “If I can network my way into a book you should be able to network your way into a job.”   Greg also uses improvisational techniques and Yes, And to incredible effect. Through networking and saying Yes, And, Greg secured his first job as a CPA at Whittlesey and Hadley, found a way into ESPN in its infancy, received second interviews with IBM and Texas Instruments at their height, rose through the ranks of Robert Half to become Senior Vice President of Management Resources, and became President of the Connecticut Society of CPAs. Those are just some of the incredible stories that Greg shares in this interview – and it doesn’t even touch on how he ended up as a character in a novel. Greg understands that anything worth pursuing in life takes effort, but that doesn’t mean it’s complicated. Everything comes down to forming relationships.   “When everything else fails, let common sense prevail.”   In a business environment there’s no such thing as a stranger. When you’re looking for a job, when you’re looking for a favor, what’s the worse thing that can happen? Someone says no, and that really isn’t very bad.   “There's no magic formula. It’s ask for help and you'll get help.”   I can't thank Greg enough for taking time out of his schedule. It was a lot of fun, and it gave me a few ideas of new things I’d like to try in my own businesses. Greg manages to find both creative and simple solutions to common problems, and I hope he inspires you to go out there, talk to your network, join professional and community organizations, and start saying Yes, And today.     This week’s Improv article: Manage Stress With These 6 Improv Principles Resources: Connect with Greg on LinkedIn Robert Half Flashback by Gary Braver   Production & Development for The Impact Entrepreneur Show by Podcast Masters Learn more about your ad choices. We both have avid interest in jazz music, 20th century rock and pop music and experimental sounds. We met for lunch about a year ago when Kurt was down from New York City for a Philadelphia trip and when we planned to meet up in early summer for a show from the Philadelphia chamber choir The Crossing I took the opportunity to sit Kurt down to record a conversation at the show kitchen table studio. We discuss Kurt's love of avant gardist Anthony Braxton as well as his record collecting roots, getting cheated by the Kiss Army, living in Chicago in the 90s, John Zorn's New York, Kurt's work with guitarist Loren Connors, the late Bernie Worrell and being visited by Prince in his dreams.
