Among other topics this segment, Ruta shares a few memories of co-starring opposite Patrick O'Neal in “A Short Drink from a Certain Fountain,” an episode of The Twilight Zone from 1963 that Ruta considers one of her all-time favorite television performances, not only because of the character she played, but for the opportunity to perform the words of the great Rod Serling. Today our guest is Ruta Lee, one of Hollywood's most multifaceted and top-notched civic contributors. Born in Montreal, Lee is the daughter of a Lithuanian tailor. While at Hollywood High, Lee's career in show business began at the famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre… as an usherette, then candy girl. She was quickly promoted to box office cashier and just as quickly fired. Her dancing was better than her math. She vowed to return to that famous courtyard (years later, talent and serendipity placed her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, directly in front of that box office from which she was fired). Soon after, she was signed by MGM as the youngest of the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and subsequently in Funny Face with Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn, as Tyrone Power's secret love in Witness for the Prosecution, and Frank Sinatra's leading lady in Sergeant's Three, to name but a few of the many films in her credits. Simultaneously, Lee launched into television, with over 2000 appearances on shows from Perry Mason to Power Rangers, Twilight Zone to Murder She Wrote, Hogan's Heroes to Love Boat, and Roseanne. Lee was also co-host on NBC's High Rollers with Alex Trebek, and a regular on Hollywood Squares with Peter Marshall. Ms Lee's connection to her roots in Lithuania, stem from her grandmother, whose release from Siberia made international headlines, and the subject in her recently released, best-selling memoir title Consider Your Ass Kissed. A title referencing the actions required and gratitude for the monumental effort to bring her family to America from Russia during the Cold War. At the time her grandmother made all the news and even went on Johnny Carson with her. Lee is highly acclaimed for her leadership role in The Thalians, a charitable organization which is committed to good mental health from pediatric to geriatric. She has been either chairman or president for over 45 years… roles exchanged between herself and Debbie Reynolds. The Thalians honored Ruta Lee for her dedication to mental health, where she joined the ranks of previous honorees, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Mary Tyler Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Angela Lansbury and and Clint Eastwood, to name just a few. Recently, the legendary actress received Lithuania's highest honor from President Valdas Adamkus at a magnificent ceremony in the Vilnius Presidential Palace. Her famous Hollywood Estate served as the perfect backdrop to receive a visit from the Lithuanian President and First Lady, with Lithuanian Ambassador To the US Audra Plepyte in attendance. The President and First Lady remarked on how the visit to the estate gave them the rare experience of Hollywood's golden era, as the former home of entertainment icons, Rita Hayworth and Orson Wells. In addition to the Hollywood luminaries that were imagined to have gathered at galas in the estates palacios living room, or having dinners of 20 or more in the dinning hall, as well as the thought of Ms Hayworth and Mr Wells themselves making an entrance on the grand staircase, is like stepping back in time, as mental images of Citizen Kane come to mind. www.rutalee.com https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/consider-your-ass-kissed-ruta-lee/1139109864
Ruta Lee, the legendary actress known for her captivating performances in classic films such as "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," "Funny Face," and "Witness for the Prosecution," recently achieved a remarkable milestone in her illustrious career. The estate, with its rich history as the former residence of entertainment icons Rita Hayworth and Orson Welles, served as a breathtaking backdrop for the occasion. President Nauseda and First Lady Diana marvelled at the rare opportunity to step back in time and experience Hollywood's golden era, imagining the gatherings of luminaries in the palatial living room and the grandeur of dinners hosted in the dining hall.During the visit, the esteemed guests, including Lithuanian Ambassador to the US Audra Plepyte, had the privilege of relishing the ambience that once hosted the likes of George Chakiris, Rich Little, Phyllis Diller, Bob Hope, Alex Trebek, Michael Feinstein, Carol Channing, Hugh O'Brien, Sally Struthers, Debbie Reynolds, and the Rat Pack. Ruta Lee's Hollywood Estate continues to be a hub for hosting the elite of the entertainment industry, both past and present. In recognition of her lifelong connection to and pride in her Lithuanian heritage, Ruta Lee was presented with a stunning Lithuanian glass art sculpture during the state gathering. This heartfelt gesture acknowledged her deep roots in Lithuania, which trace back to her grandmother—a figure whose release from Siberia made international headlines. Ruta Lee delves into this compelling family history in her recently released, best-selling memoir titled "Consider Your Ass Kissed." The memoir aptly references the monumental effort and gratitude required to bring her family to America from Russia during the Cold War, a narrative that captivated audiences and even earned her grandmother a spot on Johnny Carson's iconic show. Ruta Lee's extraordinary journey and her enduring commitment to preserving her heritage continue to make her an iconic figure in both the realms of Hollywood and Lithuania. Hosted on Acast. Ruta Lee "IS" Hollywood. From Classic to Contemporary. Currently, Ms. Lee has just signed with Vriton Publishing to release her memoirs, entitled “Consider Your Ass Kissed.” A treasure trove of wonderful stories, anecdotes with rare first hand and authentic memories of the entertainment industry.
Sometimes all that glitters is gold. Actress, dancer, philanthropist, pisser, Ruta Lee, is one bodacious, bawdy broad, absolutely gorgeous, inside and out. This was not the time to be having a bad hair day and wardrobe issues. Sitting across the virtual desk from this stunner I felt like an ill-kempt man. I couldn't take my eyes off the perfectly coiffed and made-up woman whose lipstick never lost its luster through an hour of conversation, whilst mine disappeared faster than Florence Griffith-Joyner at the starting gate. And yet, Ruta, at every turn, was warm, inclusive, and oh so kind to me. Literally giddy with her attention, I consider my ass well kissed. And, what a conversation it 'twas! From her earliest days in Montreal with her adoring Lithuanian parents who sacrificed everything to get their Ruta to Hollywood. Dance lessons, acting classes, and live theatre swiftly led to teenage Ruta being featured on The Burns and Allen Show, The Adventures Superman, to starring in the Academy Award Nominated, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Ruta talked about Frank Sinatra and how he unknowingly led to her casting in Witness for the Prosecution, and then knowingly her starring role opposite him and the rest of the Rat Pack in Sergeants 3. Frank, Dean, Sammy, and Peter, oh my! We got stories! About meeting Marilyn, sitting across the table from Elizabeth Taylor (with whom she later co-starred in Sweet Bird of Youth), Milton Berle, and John Wayne. What a story that is! Meeting Debbie Reynolds with whom she shared 50 years of great friendship and philanthropy. The Thalians, a huge part of both of their lives which has changed more lives than can be counted. Playing charades with Lucy, getting Clint, being adored by George Burns, kissing more Hollywood stars than you can shake a stick at, and getting the reveal on who were two of her favorites. *sigh* We talked Perry Mason, High Rollers, and Alex Trebeck, Match Game, Hollywood Squares, Johnny Carson, leaving us with a tear, yet we barely scratched the Ruta surface. There's a promised Part 2 in both of our futures. As soon as I mentioned her recently dropped memoir, Consider Your Ass Kissed, https://amzn.to/3mB2ZAy she hit it back to me, giving a nod to my, Don't Jump. Generosity seeps from this woman's pores. I can't wait to dive into her juicy tome. What a life she's lived and continues to savor, and wow, can this woman tell a tale. I'll be volunteering at the Ruta Lee fan club, devouring her book, jumping to schedule another sit-down, and, I hope sharing many more moments and belly laughs with this Hollywood glamour puss. Ruta Lee defies age and gravity. I'd kill to have what she's having. Certainly one of Hollywood's most glamorous ladies, Ruta Lee is also one of its most multifaceted and top-notched civic contributors. She vowed to return to that famous courtyard (years later, talent and serendipity placed her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, directly in front of that box office from which she was fired).Soon after, she was signed by MGM as the youngest of the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and subsequently in Funny Face with Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn, as Tyrone Power's secret love in Witness for the Prosecution, and Frank Sinatra's leading lady in Sergeant's Three, to name but a few of the many films in her credits. Simultaneously, Lee launched into television, with over 2000 appearances on shows from Perry Mason to Power Rangers, Twilight Zone to Murder She Wrote, Hogan's Heroes to Love Boat, and Roseanne. Lee was also co-host on NBC's High Rollers with Alex Trebek, a regular on Hollywood Squares with Peter Marshall and made several television movies. She had series leads in CBS' Coming of Age and HBO's 1st and Ten. Her stints on the Bonnie Hunt Show remain among her favorites. As a young starlet, Ruta made international headlines when she convinced Khrushchev to release her grandmother from the Soviet Union. She brought her to the U.S. where she lived her remaining years in the sunshine of freedom. She is grateful to all for the prayers that helped in that effort.Lee has headlined around the country in many musicals as Dolly, Annie, Molly, Peter Pan, Mame, Irene, Nelly, Irma, Rose, The Woman of the Year, and Madame in the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, these are just a few of her leading lady roles.Critics have raved about all of her stage roles, but two stand out as favorites, The Unsinkable Molly Brown and Goodbye Charlie. Lee's performance in the former was described by composer Meredith Willson as "the greatest Molly of them all and had Ruta Lee created the role on Broadway, the original production would still be running."More recently she took a star turn in the critically acclaimed Steel Magnolias at Garry Marshall's Falcon Theater as well as Fort Worth's Casa Manana and Funny Business at the L.A.'s Coronet. She headlined 4 seasons to the hit musical revue, Senior Class at the Annenberg Theater, Palm Springs.Lee is highly acclaimed for her leadership role in The Thalians, a charitable organization which is committed to good mental health from pediatric to geriatric. She has been either chairman or president for over 45 years… roles exchanged between herself and Debbie Reynolds. The Thalians honored Ruta Lee for her dedication to mental health, where she joined the ranks of previous honorees, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Mary Tyler Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Angela Lansbury and and Clint Eastwood, to name just a few.She has served as Commissioner on the Los Angeles Board of Environmental Quality and as a member of the Economic Development Board, acted as a national spokesperson for the American Cancer Society, was honored Woman of the Year by B'nai B'rith, received the Humanitarian Award from the Beverly Hills Business Women's Association as well as top honors from the City of Hope. Ruta is very proud to be the recipient of the prestigious Yellow Rose of Texas from President George W. Bush. Recently, she received Lithuania's highest honors from President Valdas Adamkus at a magnificent ceremony in the Vilnius Presidential Palace. Ruta is also the proud recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which added to her stars on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars and the Celebrity Walk at the Thalians Mental Health Center, Cedars-Sinai,
