Probably the best nostalgic Christmas movie ever! It took being an adult for us to recognize the magic as seen through the eyes of young Ralphie. The film showcases vignettes now classic in our minds: sticking your tongue to the frozen flagpole, fantasizing about just how to get your favorite Christmas present, and of course, getting your mouth washed out with soap!Don't forget to drink your Ovaltine!Today we did Tim Tam Slams.Intro and Outro music by PlayAgain on Pond5Send us a text

Send us a textKatie and Bridget shoot their eyes out as they re-watch the holiday classic: A Christmas Story! It's a movie so iconic and overplayed around Christmas that we guarantee you've probably fallen asleep at least ONCE while watching it! Come along as we meet Ralphie, a kid obsessed with getting the one thing he wants for Christmas: An official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and a "thing" that tells time. Over the days leading up to Christmas we follow Ralphie through all typical kid things, such as: surviving and then (eventually) beating up bullies, NOT being an upstander for his friends, getting scammed by capitalistic corporations, and learning how Mom's deal with stupid decisions by their husbands (Pst - Just break the lamp!). After psychological warfare, coercion through badly written essays, and even attempting to enlist Santa on his mission, Ralphie eventually gets his gift and to absolutely no one's surprise - he shoots his eye out. This timeless classic continues to make us laugh even to this day! Released in 1983, it stars Peter Billingsley, Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin, Scott Schwartz, RD Robb, and Zack Ward.

Starring a young Sam Rockwell in his second role after Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles…well, “starring” might be overstating it a bit. "A Christmas Story" is a beloved American Christmas comedy film released in 1983, directed by Bob Clark and based on the short stories and semi-fictional anecdotes of author and radio personality Jean Shepherd, primarily from his book "In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash." Filmed in both the US and in Toronto Canada. This is the story of the Canadian connection to this classic film. Here are some key aspects of the movie: ### Plot: The story is set in the 1940s in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana. It follows the young Ralphie Parker, played by Peter Billingsley, over the course of several weeks leading up to Christmas. Ralphie's main wish is to receive a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, despite warnings from adults that he'll "shoot his eye out." ### Key Elements: - **The Red Ryder BB Gun:** This is central to the plot, with Ralphie's repeated attempts to convince his parents, his teacher, and even Santa Claus that he should get this gift. - **Memorable Scenes:** - **The Leg Lamp:** Ralphie's father wins a "major award" - a lamp shaped like a woman's leg in fishnet stockings, which becomes a significant and humorous point of contention in the household. - **The Tongue Stuck to the Flagpole:** A dare gone wrong where one of Ralphie's friends gets his tongue stuck to a frozen flagpole. - **Ralphie's Fantasy Sequences:** These scenes show his imagination running wild with scenarios where he uses the BB gun to save the day or exact revenge. - **Cultural Impact:** - The film has gained a cult following and is now a staple in American holiday viewing. It's often played on a 24-hour loop starting Christmas Eve on some TV channels. - Iconic phrases from the movie like "You'll shoot your eye out!" have entered popular culture. - **Characters:** - Ralphie Parker - The protagonist, portrayed as both dreamy and scheming in his quest for the BB gun. - The Old Man (Ralphie's father) - Played by Darren McGavin, he's depicted as both gruff and endearing, especially in his pride over the leg lamp. - Mother Parker - Played by Melinda Dillon, she is the more reasonable and protective figure in the family. - **Themes:** - The innocence of childhood, the magic of Christmas, the dynamics of family life, and the humorous side of holiday mishaps. - **Legacy:** - "A Christmas Story" has inspired sequels, merchandise, and even a Broadway musical. This movie captures the nostalgia of the holiday season through the lens of humor and heart, making it a perennial favorite for many during Christmas time.

Welcome back to another episode of the Video Store Podcast! As baseball season is winding down, we've selected four more baseball films to help you get through the post-season, especially if your team isn't looking quite as good as they were at the start. Batting first is 1988's Bull Durham, written and directed by Ron Shelton. This film is a wonderful snapshot of minor league ball in the late 80s and reminds the audience that it's not just about the game. It's about figuring out who you are and what you want out of life, regardless of your occupation. Starring Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Robbins, it's a drama that will keep you swinging for the fences. Next up is 1989's Major League. A wealthy divorcee obtains the Cleveland Indians in the divorce but wants to relocate the team to a warmer climate. However, the escape clause only triggers if attendance drops below a certain threshold. Stacking the team with nobodies and has-beens, she hopes to move to Miami by the end of the season. When the team learns why they've been dealt the hand they've dealt, they rally to show her what they're really made of. It's a cheeky comedy that will make you stand up and cheer. Batting third in our line up is The Natural from 1984, starring Robert Redford, Glenn Close, Robert Duvall, Kim Basinger, Wilford Brimley, Barbara Hershey, Darren McGavin, and Robert Farnsworth. Adapted from a book of the same name by Bernard Malamud, The Natural is a 4-time Academy Award-nominated film about finding your purpose, even in less-than-ideal circumstances, and knowing that you could be “the greatest that ever was.”On clean-up duty is 1989's Field of Dreams. If you podcast it, they will come, and they hopefully will check out this film. Field of Dreams is about creating space, both literally and figuratively, for the unimaginable. It's about making peace with your past, and moving towards a better future. It's a truly beautiful film, nominated for three Academy Awards, and boasts an incredible cast of performers, including Kevin Costnery, Amy Madigan, Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones, Burt Lancaster, Gaby Hoffmann, and Tim Busfield, among others. Television marathons helped A Christmas Story become a huge favourite this time of year, but Bob Clark's holiday comedy didn't need to be stuffed down people's throats. It earns the rep of being one of the greatest Christmas movies by being funny and sweet. Jean Shepherd's joyful memories of his own life as a kid growing up about 80 years ago in Indiana offset some of the bad memories, whether it be a furnace or a Farkus. The story is episodic by design, but the running storyline is of course Peter Billingsley's obsession with someone making sure to put a Red Ryder BB gun under the tree. He's ideally cast and pretty good as Ralphie, but Melinda Dillon is terrific as his mother and Darren McGavin is having a ball playing The Old Man. Ryan's solo show triple dog dares you not to shoot your eye out as this 555th episode of Have You Ever Seen breaks down the enduring classic that is A Christmas Story. Reviews reviews reviews, hey ho, let's GO! That said I'm still not a Ramones fan, though I like about 2 songs, whatever. Love them or hate em, let's kick off another round of 70's movie reviews. Today's offering starts off with a 1970 made for TV movie which later did get a theatrical release titled (The Tribe). Here the dad from a Christmas story, hates that the marines are now taking draftee's. He also hates hippies, especially one played by Jan Michael Vincent. Set a course for zaniness here on the military base. So great to see Darren McGavin play a drill Sargent. Seems unlikely but I heart it very much. Lets move on to (Walkin g stick 1970). Here we have Samantha Eggar as Deborah a cool person who is used for crime by this asshat. I believe it's called a love con. Lots of 70's London in this and she figures out asshat in the end, oops spoiler. I can't really figure out how the whole spoiler thing fits into our lil pod, I do know that I'd like to assume you've seen it and wanna hear our take, but also we could be turning you on to some great films so I'll keep spoilers to a minimum. Let's advance now to level 3 with (11 Harrowhouse 1974) and can Candice Bergen, Charles Gordon, and James Mason, make this jewel heist film NOT dull as dishwater. See Ma, no spoilers, HA. Ok next up is (Green Eye's 1977) No spoilers but we love us some Paul Winfield, and this made for TV movie about a very sweet man with a cool mom, trying to do right and cope with what happened in nam, that I've been searching for forever and is now on you tube, is flipping amazing!!!! Also it deals with a very under talked subject in film, and that's our war orphans. Along comes another made for t.v. movie that is finally available on you tube, and that's (Perfect Gentlemen 1978). So much amazing stuff going into this one, Lauren flipping Bacall, Ruth Flippin Gordon, Sandy flipping Dennis, with a script by Nora flipping Ephron. It's quite a feat that this doesn't seem to exceed the sum of it's parts. Oops spoiler. It is good though, and you can always listen, if you want to know more. Finally today we have (Starting Over 1979) this is also a film that has a lot of awesome goin into it. Screenplay by Mary Tyler Moore and the Simpson's creator James Brooks, Murphy flipping brown, Jill Clayburgh, Charles Durning, Francis Sternhagen, the expert directing of Alan Pakula, and even Burt flipping Reynolds. Lets hear it folks. I think this one delivers, but I may sadly be alone in that assessment, but I'm writing this SO , it's the best and is loved by all. He he, I'm having a bit of fun today, thank you dear listers for your time, please tell your friends and or write us a review. Love us or hate us we'll take the feedback form, today only. Seriously though , thanks.

Odd as it may seem today, there was a time when sequels were considered inferior rip-offs by studios and critics alike. A desperate ploy at milking the success of likely superior original film. Rarely was a sequel directed by the film's original director (of course there are many notable exceptions such as Evil Dead 2, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Dawn of the Dead) with the filmmakers having concern that there wasn't artistic value in returning to the well or that the studio execs would see them as one and done type creatives. And yet, that didn't stop many of the genres most successful franchises from soldiering on. Jason, Freddy, Chucky, Pinhead… to name a few. All continued on with involvement from their creators at some level. One of the most resilient has been the Halloween franchise. The first sequel was written and produced by the creators of the original, John Carpenter and Debra Hill and directed by relative newcomer Rick Rosenthal. The film also saw the return of stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence and continued directly where the first film left off as Michael Myers' continued his night of terror. The film was a success and Carpenter and Hill were asked to come up with a third. So, having seemingly killed off both Myers and Loomis in the previous film, they decided to try something different and create a completely new story with new characters set on Halloween. The idea being that if this model worked, you'd have a formula for an anthology Halloween horror film you could release every couple of years.  It didn't. The fans were puzzled and pissed at the absence of beloved villain Michael Myers and the movie soon became persona non grata with fans. That would change over the years as the film, titled Halloween 3: Season of the Witch and well directed by Carpenter pal Tommy Lee Wallace and staring genre greats Tom Atkins and Dan O'Herlihy, would go on to become a fan favorite. Long live Silver Shamrock. A few years later, undeterred executive producer of the series Moustapha Akkad felt that it was time to bring Michael back. Carpenter and Hill had moved on and stepped away from the series. Who was going to bring back the Shape for another terror filled night of treat or treating? Enter Dwight Little. Having directed 3 action-adventure films prior to signing on to do Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Little didn't necessarily seem like the obvious choice. However, one thing anyone could see by looking at his first three films was a strong eye for big set pieces and a deft way with suspense. Halloween 4 also sees the return of Donald Pleasence as Doctor Loomis and Little and writer Allan B. McElroy give this genre legend more to do here than in previous films. It's a smart move and Pleasence gives a knockout performance. Halloween 4 has a strong cast all around with Danielle Harris beginning her career as a Scream Queen playing the 7-year-old Jamie Lloyd, Ellie Cornell in a relatable and strong protector roll (an underrated contribution in many ways) as Rachel Carruthers, Jamie's step-sister and great supporting cast including Beau Starr as Sheriff Ben Meeker and veteran character actor Michael Pataki as Doctor Hoffman. Dwight Little found just the right balance of the controlled and deliberate tone of Carpenter's original film and his own sensibilities as a filmmaker. Cutting down on the gore of Halloween 2 (which was really there as response to the popularity of the “Friday the 13th” films and doesn't quite fit the Halloween series) and playing up the tension, “Halloween 4” also captures the spirit of Halloween itself. The opening montage of fall imagery rooting the film firmly in the season in a way few of the many oncoming sequels would recapture. “Halloween 4” is not only the best of the Halloween sequels, it's a testament to Dwight Little's skill as a filmmaker that the film has become a traditional selection in many genre fans seasonal film playlist. Dwight has gone on to direct plenty more films and television series in the genre including the vastly underrated 1989 version of “Phantom of the Opera” starring Robert Englund (no points for guessing which role he plays), the extremely fun and well directed “Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid”, “the X-Files” and the brilliant “Millennium” (for which he did one of its best episodes, a Christmas episode featuring Darren McGavin as the father of Frank Black, series lead Lance Henriksen) and “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series”. All of this on top of an extremely successful career as an action film director, of which he's made many greats! Dwight and Kevin talk on the high jinks of shooting a crazy movie like his early action adventure film “Bloodstone, why he approached Halloween 4 as though it were a detective movie, working with the late legend Donald Pleasence, getting around Andrew Lloyd Webber while making his version of “Phantom” and his new horror film “Natty Knocks” which has him reuniting with both Danielle Harris and Robert Englund. In 1988 he changed the face of Halloween. Tonight, he's back. Spill Your Guts is proud to present, a conversation with director Dwight Little. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

This week the gang is all back together (along with some Christmas spirits) to discuss the sequel (or one of many sequels) to A Christmas Story with A Christmas Story Christmas.  For some the nostalgia and love of the original was enough to make this one entertaining but everyone agreed, on it's own, it's just not a good film.  Sarcastro does a little research on the actor who played Flick and opens up a whole new film catalogue for Fatty to watch.  The fellas question how or why this had to be shot in Bulgaria while Sarcastro offers a minor story change that would have brought back Darren McGavin for a heartfelt moment and one last appearace as "The Old Man".
