I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Tuesday morning, the 11th of February, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Hebrews 11:1: ”Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” And then verse 6:”But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”Faith is to simply believe. You and I try so hard to please God, we try so hard to do things by faith. We must stop that. It is about believing that Christ is for us, that Jesus is not standing against us. Romans 8:31:”What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” Beautiful, we have the majority. Faith like potatoes! Listen, I didn't think that one up. No, I'm not clever enough! There was a Scottish preacher by the name of Peter Marshall. He was the chaplain to the US Senate. He said, ”You must have simple faith - faith you can touch, faith you can see, faith that you can feel - faith like potatoes.” That cliché has been amazing in my own life. He has done it all. We do not need to do anything. All we have to do is receive the finished work of Christ on the cross. How many times, many of you listening to this message now have been with me where we've prayed and asked God to bring rain, and He's brought the rain and filled the dams to overflowing. How, at big open air events, we've asked the Lord to hold the rain back and it's rained right around the meeting, all the way around but it never rained on the meeting. What we need to do is to believe that He can do it. How do we get faith? Well, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God and you'll find that in Romans 10:17.Today, go out and simply believe that Christ is for you and He's for me.Jesus bless you and goodbye.

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Valarie Long, daughter of actors Richard Long and Mara Corday. At times our conversation was breezy, at times difficult and at other times funny, Valerie really took some time with this interview because there was so much to discuss.    From health issues that plagued Richard his whole life to some of those same issues that Valerie herself faced, we hear about how her father was plucked from obscurity as a high school senior at Hollywood High School and within no time was working on films with Orson Welles, Claudette Colbert, Loretta Young and Edward G. Robinson. We also discuss her father's first marriage prior to meeting the pinup girl Playboy model turned actress Mara Corday, to a young ingénue named Suzan Ball who tragically passed away at age 22 when Richard was only 23 whose tragic story is one we had never heard of prior to connecting to Valerie. Somehow we end up talking to Valerie about people like Clint Eastwood, Peter Marshall, Lee Majors, Barbara Stanwyck, Roddy McDowell, Dan Rowan and Sit John Mills. We also discuss iconic TV shows like The Big Valley, The Twilight Zone, 77 Sunset Strip, Nanny and the Professor and more. We discuss movies like Tarantula, Sudden Impact, Tomorrow is Forever, Ma and Pa Kettle and Make Like a Thiefand others. It's a rollicking conversation that was equal parts funny, heartwarming and poignant and we thank Valerie for shying away from nothing in our conversation.. But that's how things happen on the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story. And this one is a keeper.

It is National Family Week. As I write this warm thoughts column, families have traveled from far and near to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. There is more travel over the Thanksgiving weekend than any other time of the year. How wonderful for families to be together and celebrate the family ties. Every day is a day to celebrate the family. In today's world, there is a concern about the family and their relationships. Peter Marshall once wrote, "We are not willing to risk losing the love in our relationship with our children by persevering with them in matters of discipline, the biggest single cause of the breakdown of the American family is that so much of what we could call love, the Puritans would have another name for...idolatry." Unlike most modern parents, the Puritans knew that their children did not belong to them. They belonged to God. Consequently, they did not possess them. On the contrary, they considered that their children had been entrusted to their care by God. They were to protect them, raise them and teach them, training them up in the way that He would have them go. Parenthood was sacred responsibility. Arnold H Glass once stated, "The family fireside is the best of schools. Families that are built on love, respect and togetherness, instead of social climbing or the pursuit of successful careers. Our nation's hope for survival. Every joy shared adds more love. Every crisis faced together makes the family stronger."Think about it, how do strong families provide stability for a nation? Your kindness influences your children, your humor influences your home, your joy influences your actions, your service influences your society. A nation is only as strong as its families. God made us a family. We need one another, we love one another, we forgive one another, we work together, we play together, we worship together together. We use God's Word together. We grow in Christ together. We love all men together. We serve our God together. We hope for heaven. An unknown writer once stated that, "A happy family is an early heaven." Thank God for our loving and caring, strong families throughout the world. Have a joy filled holiday season! Warm Thoughts from the Little Home on the Prairie Over a Cup of Tea by Dr. Luetta G. Dr. Melissa Givens is a retired colonel with over 25 years of service in the U.S. Army, specializing in emergency and disaster medicine. She holds both an MD and an MPH (Master of Public Health) and is experienced in military and special operations medicine. Dr. Melissa also served as the medical director of the Ryan Larkin Field Hospital, established during the COVID-19 pandemic at Columbia University's Baker Athletic Complex. She reflects on her time as a military physician in Iraq, highlighting the challenges of maintaining order in high-stress environments and the importance of collaboration over ego. She discusses how tone, energy, and non-verbal communication are crucial in trauma situations, and how breaking down hierarchies can improve teamwork and patient care. Melissa recalls how the anonymity of full protective gear during COVID-19 reduced posturing and fostered greater collaboration. Addressing leadership development, she encourages medical students to embrace leadership early, make decisions with incomplete information, and overcome their desire for certainty. She also emphasizes creating an open environment within all teams, allowing for dissent and input from all members.      Key Takeaways [01:33] Melissa, a mother and experienced leader, talks about balancing professional and personal life. She emphasizes how important it is to be a parent her kids can be proud of, which serves as a grounding principle in her life. [03:21] She reflects on her experiences as a military physician in Iraq, dealing with a unique "red line" designed to separate emergency doctors from trauma surgeons in high-stress environments. The goal was to create order but often exacerbated tensions, highlighting the importance of collaboration over ego. [07:17] Melissa describes the critical importance of energy, tone, and non-verbal communication in trauma situations. Being aware of how these factors impact both patients and medical teams is crucial, as is creating an environment of trust and clear communication. [12:40] She discusses how breaking down hierarchies in medical settings, such as addressing colleagues by first names rather than titles, can foster better teamwork and communication, leading to improved patient care. [09:15] Melissa recounts a fascinating experience during COVID-19 in a field hospital. The anonymity created by full protective gear eliminated the usual posturing and egos that can sometimes dominate medical teams, fostering greater collaboration and a singular focus on patient care. [18:30] When discussing gaps in leadership development, Missy mentions the importance of encouraging medical students to embrace leadership roles early, avoid hesitation, and overcome their desire for certainty. She emphasizes the value of making decisions with incomplete information—an essential skill in medicine and leadership. [20:35] Melissa shares an entertaining story about leadership and problem-solving under pressure, involving a boat trip to see hippos in Africa. When the motor failed, she had to think quickly to save the team from an approaching hippo, using nothing but the boat's floorboards to row. This story highlights the importance of being accountable and prepared for the unexpected in any leadership situation. [24:11] Melissa emphasizes how creating a welcoming environment for a trauma team, allowing for dissent and encouraging open dialogue, leads to the best outcomes. She believes clear roles, articulation of plans, and encouraging input from all team members are critical to effective collaboration. [31:48] Melissa advises that leaders approach situations with curiosity rather than judgment, especially when being second-guessed or dealing with Monday-morning quarterbacks. This open mindset fosters trust and continuous improvement through after-action reviews. [33:20] Reflecting on work-life balance, Melissa shares her motto, inspired by her college powerlifting coach: "If you're nothing sore every day for the rest of your life, you're not working hard enough." She encourages leaders to challenge themselves in various aspects of life but also emphasizes the importance of rest and recovery for growth and balance. [35:37] Closing quote: "When we long for life without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds, and diamonds are made under pressure." – Peter Marshall.   Quotable Quotes "If you're not sore every day for the rest of your life, you're not working hard enough."  "Approach all things with curiosity." "Check your ego at the door and act accordingly."  "Creating that welcoming environment where there is room for either dissent or insertion of new ideas is really what I've seen make the most successful trauma teams."  “Don't make these assumptions. Be accountable." "You need to challenge yourself intellectually, emotionally, cognitively, and physically, and always be aspiring for that growth state."   "When we long for life without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds, and diamonds are made under pressure." – Peter Marshall.   Resources Mentioned The Leadership Podcast | Sponsored by | Rafti Advisors. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss both the startling rise of cultural Christianity in the West, as well as the incurably churchy desires of our souls. While there is an upward trend in America for people to identify themselves as religiously unaffiliated, they don't actually seem to want to disaffiliate themselves from all things related to religion. In fact, there are many traditions and symbols associated with Christianity that they seem to long for. So what causes this spiritual hunger? Episode Links Dr. White recently blogged about this topic, which is part of what prompted today's conversation. We'd suggest reading “The Rise of Cultural Christianity” and “Surprising Mourners for the Decline of Christianity.” There was also an article written by Madeleine Davies for The New Statesman titled “The rise of cultural Christianity,” which you can find HERE. Dr. White also mentioned the surprising commentary made recently by famed atheist Richard Dawkins stating that he would consider himself to be a cultural Christian. You can watch the LBC video post of Richard Dawkins on X HERE, as well as read the article written by Walter Sánchez Silva titled “Famous Atheist Richard Dawkins Says He Considers Himself a ‘Cultural Christian'.” There was another article Dr. White referenced written by Derek Thompson - who considers himself to be an agnostic - in The Atlantic. You can read “The True Cost of the Churchgoing Bust” HERE. There were a few books that Dr. White noted related to today's conversation: The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order by Sam Huntington, Mr. Jones, Meet the Master: Sermons and Prayers of Peter Marshall by Catherine Marshall and How the Irish Saved Civilization by Thomas Cahill. There are a couple past podcasts that you may be interested in checking out related to today's conversation. One is CCP106: On Atheists and Agnostics and the other is CCP9: On Unchurched Christians. The first explores the rise in Americans saying “no” to organized religion and the second focuses on this desire that so many have to find church-like experiences in other settings. There is also an article written by Marc Ramirez in USA Today titled “As Millions Leave Organized Religion, Spiritual and Secular Communities Offer Refuge.” You can read that article HERE. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday. Could a Catholic be on the Throne of England? In this final episode of our series on the Puritan movement, we hear how the Church of England worked through this question with Catholic James as heir to the throne. Learn about the creation of the Whigs and Tories, the reign of King James, how religious freedom ebbs and flows during this period, and the Act of Toleration in 1689 that finally allowed dissenting churches (Baptists, Congregationalists, Presbyterians) freedom of worship, although not yet freedom to participate in government. It wouldn't be until the 1829 Catholic Emancipation Act that Roman Catholics would be granted admission to politics in England. Rev.
