Schlocktober is over! But the horrors continue! (depending on how much you like Billy Barty) This week! Parker and Sean are off to see the Wizard! Either that, or they're just wearing their ruby slippers for no reason at all. But one thing's for sure: they're reviewing the weird-ass Chevy Chase / Carrie Fisher comedy "Under the Rainbow" from 1981! And they're also catching up on the official JFS movie rankings. So #DonloydNow and enjoy this bite-sized Junk Food Supper. We got all this plus exchanging digits like the kids in Strange Darling do, celebrating small victories, the worst election results in our lifetime, a quick run down of some recent releases (The Fall Guy, Twisters, The Substance, Anora and maybe more!), the hottest spot for plaster cranks in Sin City (we're talking dongs), do we need to all calm down about Bruce Campbell (just a little)?, Parker defends puke movies (and also heaps mild praise on a Journey to the Center of the Earth movie), walking simulations explored, a drop requested (and delivered), sneezes, blank stares, gleeks and so much more!! Tread Perilously continues a witchy October with The Paul Lynde Halloween Special. When neighborhood kids harass Paul Lynde about his plans to celebrate Halloween, he flees to the home of his housekeeper's sister. But he soon learns both are witches with remarkable resemblances to Witchiepoo and The Wicked Witch of the West. As it turns out, they want him to be a spokesman for witches. In return, he'll get three wishes granted and a private concert from KISS. The latter aspect is not negotiable. What wishes will Paul get granted? Will KISS let Peter sing "Beth"? And will guest stars Billy Barty, Florence Henderson, and Betty White make a mark on the proceedings? Erik and Justin try to deal with a variety special making a stab at an ongoing narrative. They also conjure the Osmonds back into existence. The previous on-screen persona of Betty White is explored. Bruce Vilanch returns as Erik reads out a very long list of writers. The Pinky Tuscadero phenomenon gets explained ... including the unlikely connection to Suzi Quatro. The pair take a closer look at KISS and give "Beth" a review. Erik decries the industry for not giving Margaret Hamilton a true starring role and the long delayed Alien: Romulus chat finally occurs.

Send us a textDo you remember Masters of the Universe? The 1987 He-Man movie that did not resemble the beloved cartoon of the 80s, at all! We remember some good casting decisions. Frank Langella as Skeletor is awesome. Meg Foster as Evil Lynn is awesome. Dolph Lungren as He-Man, a guy who could barely speak English, why the hell not? It also stars "Friends" star, Courtney Cox, that dick of a principal from "Back to the Future" and the kid that later gets a job being an Uber driver for the Star Trek Voyager crew. And this beloved cartoon and toy empire was put in the hands of a first-time director and production company known for B-Movies starring Charles Bronson, Chuck Norris, and Jean Claude Van Damn. Oh yeah, they also ruined "Superman" by producing "The Quest For Peace". So now we're not sure what to expect. But it should be fun either way.  Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

Fabulous Film & Friends

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 16, 2024 69:57

On our 80th episode of Fabulous Film & Friends what better way to follow up a Road House podcast than by looking at the highlights of pioneering gay director John Schlesinger? We're talking about 1969's Midnight Cowboy starring Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Brenda Vaccaro, John McGiver, Sylvia Miles, Bob Balaban and Barnard Hughes as well as 1971's Sunday, Bloody Sunday starring Peter Finch, Glenda Jackson, Murry Head and Dame Peggy Ashcroft topped off with 1975's The Day of the Locust starring William Atherton, Donald Sutherland, Karen Black, Burgess Meredith, Bo Hopkins, Pepe Serna, Geraldine Paige, Richard Dysart, Lil' Jackie Earl Haley, an even littler Billy Barty and Mrs. Lovey Howell, herself, Natalie Schaeffer.  I'm joined this week by the reliably ab-fab crew of my kid-sister and lit major Roseanne Caputi as well as the sensitive cowhand himself, actor, photographer and snappy patter producer par excellence Gordon Alex Robertson!  Okay, before we don the fringed suede jackets and find a spot on 43rd St., the synopses:  In Midnight Cowboy big, dumb Texan Joe Buck quits his job as a dishwasher and hops on a Greyhound to the big town, New York City with dreams of making his fortune as a male prostitute servicing rich, bored housewives on Park Avenue. After a series of cringe-inducing misfires, Joe finds himself penniless and living in a squalid, condemned apartment with a sickly, limping con man named Enrico “Ratso” Rizzo. With Ratso serving as Joe's manager the only place they can go is straight down. Barely surviving a New York winter, Joe's fortunes finally start to change for the better until a dying Ratso implores Joe to get him to Florida.  Sunday, Bloody Sunday slowly--ever so slowly-- catalogues the highs and lows of two middle-aged, upper-class Londoners, one man, Dr. Daniel Hirsch, a perennially single doctor and one woman, Alex Greville a divorcee who both find purpose and vitality in a love triangle with Bob Elkin, a young sculptor in his 20's. The three must deal with abrupt change, loss and acceptance when Bob the sculptor moves to America.  The Day of the Locust, based on the 1939 novel by Nathaniel West, follows the course of three, tragic dreamers who came to Hollywood with eyes toward stardom but end up victims of its cold-hearted excess: Tod Hacket, a somewhat idealistic --if a bit rapey set designer from Yale-- who is in love with Fay Greener, a beautiful but talentless day playing actress who refuses to date men that aren't wealthy, and none other than Homer Simpson, a simple, religious and socially awkward accountant who naively takes Fay in to live with him.  Was Mr. Schlesinger an all time great? Or a one hit wonder?  Find out! Watch this podcast on Youtube: https://youtu.be/rVaMo465c8A Follow FF&F on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/fabulousfilmandfriends

The Film Flamers: A Horror Movie Podcast

Legend is a 1985 American epic dark fantasy adventure film directed and initiated by Ridley Scott and starring Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, Tim Curry, David Bennent, Alice Playten, Billy Barty, Cork Hubbert, and Annabelle Lanyon. The film revolves around Jack, a pure being who must stop the Lord of Darkness who plots to cover the world with eternal night.  Although not a commercial success when first released, the film would find audiences after its release in the booming 80's home video market and through repeat playing on cable networks. The film has gone on to become a cult classic, especially after a Director's Cut was released. The film stars Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley, Jean Marsh, and Billy Barty. The majority of filming took place in Wales as well as a small section in New Zealand. Industrial Light & Magic created the visual effects sequences, which led to a revolutionary breakthrough with digital morphing technology. The film was released in 1988 to mixed reviews from critics with some praising the special effects and character designs while some criticized the direction and plot. It grossed $137.6 million worldwide against a $35 million budget. While not the blockbuster some expected, it turned a profit based on international box office returns and strong home video and television returns. Additionally, it received two Academy Award nominations. A television series based on the film is scheduled to be released on Disney+ in 2022. He's also not a stranger to making changes upon changes, so you know that this movie has a Theatrical Release as well as a Director's cut version. We focused on the Director's cut, but any version of this movie will leave most viewers scratching their heads. Legend is rated PG and was released on April 18, 1986. He very much encouraged fans to go with the Director's Cut. For years, it was falsely rumored that this film was the source of inspiration for Shigeru Miyamoto's 'The Legend of Zelda' games. The movie notoriously had 4 cuts and 2 soundtracks. European and Directors Cut has Jerry Goldsmith score and the tv and theatrical cuts have boss tracks from Tangerine Dream.Rumors are during production issues, someone suggested the movie get Disney method. Story evolved from Ridley telling the screenwriter a basic idea of a Grimms fairy tale inspired hero fighting some evil and also to reference the book Faeries. There is a flirtatious deleted scene between Darkness and Princess; the original script took it even farther with a sex scene because the movie was going to be R rated for grown ups. Eludes screen rant movie website. Our favorite bits from Legend 1985 include the seduction dancing dress scene and the creation of “Lady Darkness.”We also watched Umbrella Academy Season 3 which just got released.  We appreciate it tying up loose ends and maybe leaving it open for another season. We put a staff pick spotlight on a new dramedy called The Bear. Baz Luhrmann's ELVIS is upon us, so it is now time for OMFYS' ELVIS EPISODE! First, Elvis Presley himself is a karate-chopping, motorcycle-riding, rock and roll rebel with a big chip on his shoulder who falls in with a traveling carnival in ROUSTABOUT (1964). Only Elvis' singing can keep the carnival from being gobbled up by a sideshow conglomerate, so it's up to carny queen Barbara Stanwyck (!) to convince him to stop being a dick long enough to save the show in what is (kinda sorta) the Elvis movie version of Nightmare Alley. Also starring Joan Freeman and the age appropriate love interest and Leif Erickson as the drunken carnival foreman who runs Elvis off the road in a fit of rage + Richard Kiel as the strong man, Teri Garr shaking her tail as a cooch tent dancer and Billy Barty as the butt of Elvis' cancellable jokes. Raquel Welch is also in here somewhere. Produced by Hal Wallis (Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, True Grit) if you can believe that! Roustabout is currently streaming for free with ads on Pluto. And next, we go for a bit of ELVIS PANIC with THE WORLD'S GREATEST SINNER (1962), the zero-budget passion project from Timothy Carey, the unhinged character actor who once drove Marlon Brando to stab him with a pencil. Best known for small but utterly engrossing performances in Kubrick's The Killing (1956) and Paths of Glory (1957), Carey poured everything he had (including the labor of several family members) into this tale of Clarence Hilliard, a bored insurance salesman who transforms himself into a dangerous cult leader and proclaims himself a god through very Elvis-like rock and roll performances. Featuring Paul Frees (Mars and Beyond/Episode 3) as the voice of the Devil himself and music by a very young Frank Zappa. Now streaming on Prime for an extra 99¢ rental. All this plus Robert Lopez AKA EL VEZ stops by to discuss the upcoming mega Elvis biopic, Elvis Presley's own movie career and the continuing impact of the King of Rock and Roll on pop culture. Hosts: Bob Calhoun, Cory Sklar, and the father-daughter duo of Greg Franklin & Philena Franklin Weed is available at your local dispensary in participating states.

Our childhood memories are filled with images of all the toys we loved. From the glorious transforming of Optimus Prime to that first borderline-orgasmic sensation of getting our grubby little sausage fingers on the Millenium Falcon, nothing fills our minds with more joy than those plastic figures and vehicles. Masters of the Universe figures found their way into many a toy chest, ours being no exception. And between the cool and innovative characters and the psychedelic cartoon, we can honestly say that we went into this movie with hearts open and minds ready. If you loved the toys and cartoon like we did, and are thinking to yourself “I vaguely remember the live action movie, maybe I should watch it”...don't. Much like Benny's love for his children, Masters of the Universe tries its best to be coherent and genuine, but ends up a fragmented and confusing dumpster fire. Is it a story about He-Man defeating Skeletor and saving Eternia, or is it a love story between a boy, a 50-year-old-looking Courtney Cox and a musical key? Are He-Man and Skeletor mortal enemies hell bent on mutual destruction, or does the evil bone wizard just want to chill for a while and watch a near-naked Russian man get whipped? Why is the main evil henchman, Karg, modelled after a preserved testicle? And why the hell is a cow hanging out in the middle of a forest? Who cares at this point. We need a drink. Masters of the Universe is a prime example of nostalgia gone bad; it's best left floating in the ether of our memories. It doesn't get a medal - it face-planted on its way to barely receiving a participation ribbon. Let's just bite down on the stick of shame and slog through this fever dream of crap together. Some especially painful things we force ourselves to cover include: For a movie entirely about He-Man, this movie has very little to do with He-Man We understand creative license and blazing your own path, but did anyone involved in this movie actually...you know...watch the He-Man cartoon? For such a little person, Billy Barty must have powerful shoulders because he is absolutely carrying this gong show - kicking and screaming - towards tolerability Dolf Lungren; all of the sexy barbarian looks, none of the sexy barbarian machismo. He looks the part, but he can't charisma his way out of a wet paper bag For a movie that is supposed to be about a giant nearly-naked sword-wielding barbarian versus a creepy skeleton-wizard thing, they sure do love to focus the ENTIRE MOVIE on an 80's stylized dimensional key that doubles as a Casio Green screens are kind of expected for movies of the 80's and 90's, but Masters of the Universe revolutionized the art of having actors stay perfectly still in front of them, leading to some of the most ridiculously hilarious effects ever seen on film Pro tip: If you're a gym teacher, and you run into a small group of Eternia mercenaries, you are going to get your crap unnecessarily ruined  Ah, the 80's...when a police officer - without a warrant - can just force their way into your home, listen to your private phone conversations, and take your property while ashing a dirty dart all over your carpet
