Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started.Lesley Logan 0:47  Hi, Be It babe. Hello. Welcome to your Fuck Yeah Friday. Welcome to the one of my favorite episodes put together because it changes every week. I mean, it's not, it doesn't change every week, but there's something new and exciting and inspiring. So you might be excited about what I'm gonna say right now which I, 10 most inspiring quotes from some of the greatest women around the world. I'm gonna tell you that in a minute. You might be inspired by a win from someone else, or you might hear one of your own that you sent in, or maybe a win of mine gives you permission to celebrate something that's a win of yours, right? So we celebrate big wins around here, but especially the small ones, especially those. And then we leave you with a mantra. So welcome to Be It Pod. If you are new here. This is our short and sweet episode. We have our longer interviews on Tuesdays, and Brad and I recap and have fun on Thursdays. Lesley Logan 1:26  Okay, so let's go through these 10 most inspiring quotes from some of the greatest women around the world. So this is from Maya Angelou. Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it's possible, without claiming it, she stands up for all women. I mean, that right there would just be like enough of an inspiration. Thank you, Maya Angelou for always doing that. So next up is from Michelle Obama. There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish. There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish. This is from Shirley Chilsom. If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair. Yeah, she did. She's freaking awesome. If you don't know her history, go educate yourself this weekend. From Oprah Winfrey. Think like a Queen. A Queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another stepping stone to greatness. Thank you, Oprah. Coco Channel. A girl should be two things: who and what she wants. Who and what she wants. This is from G.D. Anderson. Feminism isn't about making women strong. Women are already strong. It's about changing how the world perceives that strength. Oh, chills. Serena Williams. Every woman's success should be an inspiration to another. We're strongest when we cheer each other on. Malala. I raise my voice not so I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard. Florence Griffith Joyner. When anyone tells me I can't do anything, I'm just not listening anymore. Margaret Thatcher. If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman. Well, these ladies are just some bad asses. So I don't know which one your favorite was, but I think that sometimes we just need to have those quotes somewhere. So I'm super excited to have read those, they came out on International Women's Day, but like every day should be International Women's Day, I think, so there's that to me. Lesley Logan 3:27  Anyways, let's get into your wins. This is from Nancy Lawrence. I actually have two wins from her, and so we'll have a Nancy Lawrence win day because she sent us a couple. I think I said this before, Nancy Lawrence came on our Cambodia retreat, and she's been having some epic wins that were all from what she manifested during the retreat, so. I live in Dallas, Texas and have a spa in Memphis, Tennessee. I'm an aesthetician and Pilates teacher. My brand is strength and beauty. I want to promote both skincare and Pilates to my clientele. Well, in doing so, I have a skincare client who owns a ballet studio in Memphis. She loves Pilates. She has hired me to teach Pilates to her 12 to 17 year old ballerinas. I'm so excited in this opportunity, and this week, I'll be teaching a birthday party in Dallas. She turns 23 at Club Pilates. The birthday girl specifically asked me to teach her and her friends and told me to bring it on like I do in class. So cute. And I got hired to teach at Club Pilates in Memphis Metropolitan Area Pilates studios. I love working with young people and the youthfulness Pilates has given me. And I love Lesley Logan for being that inspiration in my life. Well, Nancy Lawrence, these wins are so cool, I mean, so cool that you can live in one place, have dreams and have a business in another place, and be not only rocking that, but allowing yourself to support others along the way, like that, like people are seeing that energy and wanting you to be part of it. It's just so cool. I do love that the young kids are getting into Pilates. It's gonna be so much better for them. So way to find ways to take your Pilates magic everywhere and have your skincare practice. And I think it's so easy for us, for people to go like you have to be one thing, so you should only be a Pilates instructor. And then you're like, no, I'm gonna be both. And then what we have to do it in Dallas, that's where you live, and it's like, well, I'm gonna do it in Memphis, too. You're just not letting people put you in a box, Nancy, so thank you for inspiring all of us, because we can go outside the lines and we can go beyond states and counties and make magic happen everywhere. So Nancy, you're just inspiring all of us. Thank you for sharing your win. Lesley Logan 5:19  Okay, my win. So here's the thing, Brad and I had a really, like, not so awesome thing, it's very tragic thing that happened a couple months ago at this point, and it happened really suddenly like most tragic, traumatizing things do. WBe share a lot, right? We're really good at sharing here. I think you know that about me, like, I'll share anything, but I also share things that I've fully processed and, and even in this moment when we record it, I'm just not there. I'm not able to share it. But I remember thinking like, how am I supposed to get in the car and drive to Denver and be around hundreds of people and support them, if you listen to my win last week, how am I supposed to do that and teach these long workshops and be all the things that they're expecting, because they know me as this energetic, excited person, and I am that person, but I'm really sad right now. I'm really sad right now. And what was really cool, and this is a win, is that Brad and I were able to be so present and so excited to see everyone and so energetic and so supportive and hold space for all these people. And then when we needed to feel our feelings, we, at night in our room, and we're driving home in our van, and on a hike, we did. We absolutely did. So I'm just, I just share that with you, because I think it's really, like, life sucks a lot of the time, and then it's also super awesome, and they often happen to, like, in the same day or in the same weekend, and so it can be hard to celebrate the win for very long, because then something else happened, and it might not have happened to you, it might have happened to someone else around you, and then you feel bad celebrating something that happened good to you when something bad happens around somewhere else. But here's the deal, we can actually hold several emotions at once, right? I could cry and feel our feelings at the end of each day, and I could wake up and go, I'm so grateful to be here right now with all these people. I get to do this, and I'm gonna go enjoy that, and I will say that actually was really grateful that all that happened was to happen at the same time, because I could have space and a distraction from the thing that I was reconciling with. I could have that space and I could come back to it, and it felt really good, rather than just submersing myself in it for a few days and then coming out of my shell, we just, we got to really do it. We could do all the things. We got to do all the things. So I think it's something we'll keep to ourselves. But I just want you to know that I get it like I get when bad things happen and it's really hard to see the win, I think that's when you have to find the win even more. And it's not a toxic positivity thing. It's not what I'm talking about here. It's a feeling your feelings and being present where you are, right, what's going on around you, what good thing that you worked so hard for is happening in this exact moment at the same time, and can you be present for that right and not let this tragic thing take away from the win. So the thing that happened in no way takes away from the great thing that happened or the great things that happened before it at all. It's its own thing. It's its own book. It's its own chapter. It's its own start and stop. And I hope that that makes sense, trying to, trying to make sure that you understand, like it's not always bright-eyed and rainbows and unicorns. But that doesn't mean that you can't go look for things. I have a girlfriend who lost her father, and we were talking, and she was looking for spring, looking for signs of spring, like there could be also spring happening while you're grieving. So anyways, sharing that win with you. Lesley Logan 8:47  Now, it's time for a mantra. Let's end this on a high note. I'm a magical manifester. Yeah, you are. I am a magical manifester. I'm a magical manifester. All right, babe, send your wins in. Les, Kurt, and Jason haven't stopped referencing the Hulu limited series Good American Family about the family that adopted Natalia Grace, so this week they decided to actually watch an episode for the podcast! But first, Les started texting EVERYONE to let them know about his perfect colon (obviously), and Kurt has some Blac Chyna news… as well as some Donny Most news! Plus, Jason vision boards his dream lineup of guests for the podcast: an episode featuring Blac Chyna, Natalia Grace, and the Pornhub math guy. Then it's time to spill some seed, rock out to Hey Soul Sister, and meet a young Zelda Rubinstein in the first episode of Good American Family. Let's just say the title is presumptious. But what the show may lack in “good execution” it makes up for with the speed of Florence Griffith Joyner, and the strength of Bam Bam Rubble doing parkour whilst eating pancake burritos on the beach.    Bluesky: lifetimeofhallmark Facebook : lifetimeofhallmark Instagram : lifetimeofhallmarkpodcast Threads: lifetimeofhallmarkpodcast TikTok: lifetimeofhallmarkpod Theme song generously donated by purple-planet.com

Wilma, Florence, and Sha'Carri: American Women of Speed

Black Is America

Episode Description: In this inspiring episode of Black Is America, host Dominic Lawson takes us on a cinematic, time-traveling journey through the lives of three iconic Black women whose speed transcended the track: Wilma Rudolph, Florence Griffith Joyner (Flo Jo), and Sha'Carri Richardson. Joined by Olympic gold medalist Moushaumi Robinson, Dominic explores how each of these women didn't just run — they defied societal expectations, symbolizing freedom, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of Black womanhood. From Wilma's battle with polio to Flo Jo's fashion-forward domination, and Sha'Carri's public redemption arc, this episode is a masterclass in perseverance and Black excellence. Tune in to uncover why for Black women, speed isn't just about winning — it's about being seen, celebrated, and rewriting history. Episode Highlights & Key Takeaways: Wilma Rudolph's journey: From polio-stricken childhood to becoming the fastest woman in the world at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Florence Griffith Joyner's style and speed: How Flo Jo combined athletic dominance with unapologetic beauty and cultural impact, redefining what a champion could look like. Sha'Carri Richardson's redemption story: How the sprinter's suspension became a national conversation on grace, resilience, and how Black women are held to impossible standards — and how she roared back stronger. The power of representation and freedom: Olympic gold medalist Moushaumi Robinson reflects on seeing Flo Jo as a child and how that vision of beauty and freedom inspired generations. Black women in business and politics: How Black women continue to break records not just on the track, but as entrepreneurs, educators, and changemakers. Historical context and cinematic storytelling: A non-linear journey through the stories of these women, enriched with sound design, Olympic archives, and historical parallels. The ongoing conversation around protecting and celebrating Black women: From Sandra Bland to Breonna Taylor, the episode challenges listeners to see victories without footnotes and to honor Black women's humanity and excellence fully. Notable Soundbites & Quotes from the Episode: "Speed is not just about moving fast — it's freedom." — Moushaumi Robinson "Black women don't just show up. They show out." — Dominic Lawson "It's always the first, but rarely the celebration." — Moushaumi Robinson "Sha'Carri's suspension wasn't just about track; it was about who gets grace and who doesn't." — Dominic Lawson "Black women mold adversity into strength — on the track, in boardrooms, and in Congress." — Dominic Lawson Final Thoughts This episode is a moving tribute to the legacy of Black women who run not just to win, but to inspire, break barriers, and push the world forward. Through Wilma, Flo Jo, and Sha'Carri, we're reminded that speed is more than physical — it's a spiritual declaration of freedom and resilience. It might not seem like it, but celebrities are people, too. Their estate plans prove that, just like us, some are forward-thinking and prepared while others fail to protect their assets. Jeff uses the stories of some of the wealthiest and most fascinating figures in entertainment and sports to teach us valuable lessons in estate planning because our legacies matter, too!     What You Need to Know  (00) Episode introduction.  (07:04) Elvis Presley established a trust for his daughter, Lisa Marie. The trust dissolved when she turned 25 and that made the assets vulnerable. The lesson: Use non-dissolving trusts and carefully consider the age and maturity of the beneficiary. (13:10) Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman did not provide for after-born children. The lesson: Add a clause, “and any after-born children” and don't rely on governmental statutes that might not be in place when needed.   (15:50) Jim Morrison of The Doors died with an overly simplistic will. Plans should be able to accommodate the many “what if” scenarios that could be playing out at the time of death. The lesson: Provide for various contingencies and backup the backup. (19:32) Track star Florence Griffith Joyner kept the location of her will a secret. As a result, it took four years to close her estate and members of her family disagreed on what they thought were her wishes. The lesson: Make your document(s) location known and keep the papers in a professional's safe, secure facility. 22:50) Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, created a trust, but he never funded it. Jackson's family spent a lot of time in probate court. With trusts, you avoid probate and keep your business private. The lesson: Fund your trust.  (24:30) Actor Marlon Brando supposedly made oral promises to his long-time housekeeper. His estate plan excluded those promises, and his housekeeper brought a lawsuit. In the end, she won just a fraction of what she allegedly had been promised. The lesson: Document the details.    (26:57) James Gandolfini of The Sopranos had an estate worth $70 million when he died suddenly. He hadn't finalized his plan before leaving on vacation and 55% of the wealth was lost to taxes. The lesson: Work with an attorney or financial pro to make sure your plan is complete. Who's That Girl? A New Girl Podcast

This podcast covers New Girl Season 3, Episode 22, Dance, which originally aired on April 29, 2014 and was directed by Trent O'Donnell and written by Rebecca Addelman and Ryan Koh. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Jess is throwing a school dance where the theme is Love is Forever and Ever and Ever (with 12 total Evers) so when the dance is sabotaged, the loft comes together to fill in the gaps and support Jess.We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Flo-Jo - When Schmidt went outside to race the bully, he said, “I'm like a Hebrew cheetah, on the count of three. One, two... Flo Jo!” Gosford Park - When the dance was being sabotaged, Jess shared that all the doors should be locked to keep everyone in like it was Gosford Park.Additional Pop Culture References such as:Good Will Hunting -  When making jokes about Buster's age, Schmidt said Buster would have been 7 when Good Will Hunting came out. Good Will Hunting is a 1997 American psychological drama film directed by Gus Van Sant, and written by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The film received nominations in nine categories at the Academy Awards and won in two: Best Supporting Actor for Robin Williams and Best Original Screenplay for Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The film was met with highly positive reviews and in 2014, it was ranked at number 53 in The Hollywood Reporter's "100 Favorite Films" list.“Call Me Maybe” - Carly Rae Jepsen - This song played when Winston was having trouble turning down the “heat” on the dance floor. "Call Me Maybe" is a song recorded by Canadian singer-songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen for her EP Curiosity and later appeared on her second studio album and first international album Kiss. "Call Me Maybe" was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2012 – Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. The song was the best-selling single worldwide, selling over 12 million copies in that year alone.Ray Charles - Coach said the three guys were the worst chaperones, noting that Ray Charles' ghost would be better. Ray Charles Robinson Sr. was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, and alto saxophonist who is regarded as one of the most iconic and influential singers in history. Charles was blinded during childhood, possibly due to glaucoma and when Coach is saying Ray Charles' ghost would be a better chaperone, even though he was blind.8 Mile - When having a rap battle at the end of the episode, Schmidt says it's like 8 Mile. 8 Mile is a 2002 American musical drama film that contains autobiographical elements from Eminem's life. The story follows white rapper Jimmy Smith Jr. aka B-Rabbit and his attempt to launch a career in hip hop, a music genre dominated by African-Americans. The title is derived from 8 Mile Road, the highway between the predominantly African-American city of Detroit and the largely white suburban communities to the north that Eminem originally lived in.  On this episode's Most Likely To we discuss who is more likely to challenge a little kid to a foot race, sabotage an event, accidentally hurt their friend while trying to bond or hug, and race in a shopping cart. We also cover what Schmidt thinks “makes a man” in our “Schmidtism”. For “Not in the 2020s” we mention Nick calling Cece a “stupid girl” and the kid calling Schmidt a “flamer”. In our “Yes in the 2020s” we highlight Jess and Cece's conversation with Wendy where they talk to her but don't punish her. We also give a brief look into Mary-Charles Jones (Wendy) and Mason Cook (Tommy), the guest stars of this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Angela Kinsey (Rose - Previously Discussed in S3E2), Brian Posehn (Biology Teacher - Previously Discussed in S3E11), Samuel Gilbert (Young Schmidt - Previously Discussed in S3E6), Clint Culp (Gary the Janitor), Isaac White (Felipe), Josie Totah (Todd), Cody Benjamin Lee (Oscar), Zoé Hendrix (Winston's Girl), Seaonna Chanadet (Winston's Girl), and Jacqueline Jones (Student). In this episode we also discuss some of the callbacks from earlier seasons like how Jess couldn't say penis in Season 1 and how the men chant “Men!” like they did in this season's Thanksgiving episode. Neither of us found the bear this episode. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:City of big shoulders and dreams - When Nick is trying to entertain the kids he asks “who is from Chicago, the city of big shoulders and dreams.” The reference is from a 1916 poem by Carl Sandburg where he mentions the hard-working tradesmen and physical laborers who made the city the industrial center of the region.Munchausen syndrome - In this episode, one of the teachers mentions that she has never volunteered to chaperone a school dance because of her Munchausen syndrome. Munchausen's syndrome is a rare condition where a person fabricates or induces symptoms of illness in themselves. This is different from hypochondria as people with Munchausen syndrome actually manipulate results rather than just believe they are ill. This episode got a 7/10 rating from both Kritika and Kelly; Kritika's favorite character was Coach and Kelly's favorite was Cece. Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 23!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

The classic lyrics have been reworked to chronicle the milestones, struggles, tragedies, and triumphs of African American history.   Starting from 1619 and stretching more than four hundred years, this book features pivotal moments such as the arrival of enslaved people in Jamestown, Virginia; Nat Turner's rebellion; the integration of the US military; the Selma to Montgomery marches; and present-day protests. It also celebrates the feats of African American musicians and athletes, such as Duke Ellington and Florence Griffith Joyner. Carole Boston Weatherford's riveting text and Frank Morrison's evocative and detailed paintings are informative reminders of yesterday, hopeful images for today, and aspirational dreams of tomorrow.   Carole Boston Weatherford is a two-time NAACP Image Award winner and the author of Unspeakable: The Tulsa Race Massacre, which won the Coretta Scott King Author and Illustrator Awards, a Caldecott Honor, and a Sibert Honor; the Newbery Honor book Box: Henry Brown Mails Himself to Freedom; and the Caldecott Honor books Freedom in Congo Square, Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer, Spirit of the Civil Rights Movement, and Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom. When Florence Griffith-Joyner retired after the 1988 season, she was closing out her career as one of the greatest athletes in track and field history. Flo-Jo had broken world records in the 100m and 200m, setting seemingly untouchable times that still stand to this day. She also won Olympic Gold in the 100m, 200m, 4x100 as well as silver in the 4x400 at 1988 Seoul Games. But prior to her legendary success as a professional, she was setting the foundation for her career in the NCAA. While competing for UCLA, Flo-Jo won multiple NCAA sprint titles including the 200m and 400m in 1982 and 1983 NCAA championships respectively. She still remains the only woman in NCAA history to have won both events.  Today we'll tell the story of Florence Griffith and her achievements at the 1982 and 1983 NCAA Outdoor Championships.   Follow Track and Field Black History on Instagram: instagram.com/trackandfieldblackhistory

Sometimes all that glitters is gold. Actress, dancer, philanthropist, pisser, Ruta Lee, is one bodacious, bawdy broad, absolutely gorgeous, inside and out. This was not the time to be having a bad hair day and wardrobe issues. Sitting across the virtual desk from this stunner I felt like an ill-kempt man. I couldn't take my eyes off the perfectly coiffed and made-up woman whose lipstick never lost its luster through an hour of conversation, whilst mine disappeared faster than Florence Griffith-Joyner at the starting gate. And yet, Ruta, at every turn, was warm, inclusive, and oh so kind to me. Literally giddy with her attention, I consider my ass well kissed. And, what a conversation it 'twas! From her earliest days in Montreal with her adoring Lithuanian parents who sacrificed everything to get their Ruta to Hollywood. Dance lessons, acting classes, and live theatre swiftly led to teenage Ruta being featured on The Burns and Allen Show, The Adventures Superman, to starring in the Academy Award Nominated, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Ruta talked about Frank Sinatra and how he unknowingly led to her casting in Witness for the Prosecution, and then knowingly her starring role opposite him and the rest of the Rat Pack in Sergeants 3. Frank, Dean, Sammy, and Peter, oh my! We got stories! About meeting Marilyn, sitting across the table from Elizabeth Taylor (with whom she later co-starred in Sweet Bird of Youth), Milton Berle, and John Wayne. What a story that is! Meeting Debbie Reynolds with whom she shared 50 years of great friendship and philanthropy. The Thalians, a huge part of both of their lives which has changed more lives than can be counted. Playing charades with Lucy, getting Clint, being adored by George Burns, kissing more Hollywood stars than you can shake a stick at, and getting the reveal on who were two of her favorites. *sigh* We talked Perry Mason, High Rollers, and Alex Trebeck, Match Game, Hollywood Squares, Johnny Carson, leaving us with a tear, yet we barely scratched the Ruta surface. There's a promised Part 2 in both of our futures. As soon as I mentioned her recently dropped memoir, Consider Your Ass Kissed, https://amzn.to/3mB2ZAy she hit it back to me, giving a nod to my, Don't Jump. Generosity seeps from this woman's pores. I can't wait to dive into her juicy tome. What a life she's lived and continues to savor, and wow, can this woman tell a tale. I'll be volunteering at the Ruta Lee fan club, devouring her book, jumping to schedule another sit-down, and, I hope sharing many more moments and belly laughs with this Hollywood glamour puss. Ruta Lee defies age and gravity. I'd kill to have what she's having. The Sports Experience Podcast with Chris Quinn and Dominic DiTolla

One of track and field's most dominant female athletes, “Flo-Jo” was a once in a generation talent. Rising from poverty to earn a college scholarship, dropping out to work as a bank teller & hairdresser and regaining financial aid, Griffith-Joyner became an Olympic hero. Not only a world record setter in the 100M & 200M, Griffith-Joyner won three gold medals & two silver in her Olympic career and did it with her own flair and swag. Tragically taken by a seizure in her sleep in 1998, “Flo-Jo” remains a legend. Chris Quinn: @cquinncomedy Dominic DiTolla: @ditolladominic Produced by @ty_englestudio

If you follow track and field, you'll know how difficult certain world records are to break. One of those that has proved almost unbreakable is that female 100m world record. But guess what? There was an athlete who came to close to breaking it. Closer than anyone ever has. That athlete was Carmelita Jeter, the fastest woman alive. Her personal best time of 10.64secs is the second fastest time in history. The reason she's the fastest woman alive is because the record holder herself is late, the late great Florence Griffith-Joyner (episode 301). To achieve this feat Jeter did certain things, she lived by certain principles and its three of those principles that we share with you today. NBA Creative Director (former), Gameplan Creative CEO and Sports Design Trendsetter, Tom O'Grady. Tom was born and raised in Chicago and graduated with a degree in Design, Marketing and Visual Communications from Columbia College Chicago in 1981. We talk about his childhood memories and the large influence that sport had on him and his family. During the 1980s, Tom worked as an ad agency art director on the McDonald’s business. Simultaneously, McDonald’s began to devote resources to sports marketing. This was the perfect opportunity for Tom – he combined his love of sports with his passion for design. He met and worked with Michael Jordan on the memorable Large fries for “Small Fries” ad campaign and also contributed design work to the inaugural McDonald’s Open later that same year (1987). Judy Shoemaker was the agency account director that Tom worked with on the McDonald’s Open project. In 1988, she accepted the role of Vice President, Marketing, with NBA Properties. Two years later, Judy began to recruit Tom to join her at the NBA. Commissioner David Stern named Tom O’Grady the league’s first Creative Director in 1990. Tom discusses the process that led him to leave Chicago and take up residence in New York. We discuss the impact that well-known designer, Alexander Julian, had on the aesthetics of the expansion Charlotte Hornets (1989 season). To that point, equipment managers were largely responsible for their team’s uniform design (in concert with Medalist Sand-Knit). Tom talks about how he built the NBA’s creative services team, recruiting designers who were comfortable with the explosion in graphic design software of the early 1990s. Tom was tasked with the creative direction for The Dream Team (1992 Olympic Games). He shares inside stories on how the now-iconic photos were created during the 1992 NBA season. Tom was responsible for the rebrand of the Phoenix Suns (1993 season). He met with then-team president, Jerry Colangelo, and the Suns’ ownership group. We do a deep dive on the creative process. That same season, Phoenix celebrated its silver anniversary (25th season) in the NBA, Charles Barkley joined the team and the Suns met Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the 1993 NBA Finals. A fascinating aspect of our conversation relates to design considerations the NBA factored in to its television broadcasts. For example, when the league received team prototypes, they would broadcast test the new uniforms at the New Jersey Nets’ home arena (The Meadowlands), to ensure colors and numbers would “read”. 1995 was a big year for the NBA and Tom. He oversaw the launch of the NBA.com website and was also vital in the Atlanta Hawks’ new logo – a hawk in flight, its claws clutching a basketball. Further, two expansion teams – the Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies – were set to enter the league for the 1996 season. Tom was responsible for the brand identity creation of the franchises. In a future episode of the show, Tom will return to discuss (in-depth) the Raptors / Grizzlies origin story, plus, the iconic 1995 and 1996 NBA All-Star Weekend designs. Our discussion also includes the near-rebrand from the New Jersey Nets to the New Jersey Swamp Dragons. We talk about Zach Lowe‘s excellent ESPN piece that detailed the proposed identity change. We round out the episode by talking about Tom’s all-time favourite NBA uniforms, his crucial role as brand architect for the WNBA’s launch in 1997. All this and plenty more in one of the best conversations I’ve had yet. Topics / links discussed (include): * A would-be secondary logo for the Chicago Bulls? * The rebranded Phoenix Suns uniform (debuted in 1993 season) * 1995 and 1996 NBA All-Star Weekend * What if?! The Nets were almost the New Jersey Swamp Dragons!   People mentioned in this episode, include: Chris Tripucka, Florence Griffith-Joyner, Rick Welts, Don Sperling, Peter Capolino, Dick Sakahara, Andrew Bernstein, Anne Occi, David Haney, & David Boss.   Editor's note: sign-up for my monthly newsletter - receive exclusive details on upcoming podcast episodes and future, high-profile guests to appear on the show. Rekord som fortfarande är ohotade. Hon hade genomgått en kroppslig förvandling inför rekordsommaren. Många misstänkte dopning, men Flo-Jo åkte aldrig fast. Tio år senare dog hon i sömnen i sitt hem, bara 39 år gammal. Skulle obduktionsrapporten bevisa att hon varit dopad hela tiden? I dokumentären medverkar Maria Akraka. Hon tränade med "Flo-Jo" våren 1988, bara månader före världsrekordslakten. Dokumentären är gjord av Alexander Lundholm. Gäst i studion är Isabell Gradin. Alexander Lundholm alexander.lundholm@sr.se

Crosswords: Puzzling Since 1913

Trivia Minute by TriviaPeople.com

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 21, 2016 5:14

On this date in 1913, the first crossword puzzle was printed in the New York World newspaper. Here are some things you may not have known about crossword puzzles. The first puzzle was actually called a word-cross puzzle. It was created by Arthur Wynne, who was a journalist from Liverpool, England. It was based on earlier puzzles, such as the word diamond, but also included many of the features of the modern crossword puzzle, such as black squares to separate some answers. It came to be known as a crossword puzzle early on as a result of a typesetting error. The New Yorker magazine’s first issue made mention of the large number of puzzle solvers on public transportation and noted that the puzzles had become a fad. The New York Public Library complained that puzzlers were hogging dictionaries that should be used by “legitimate readers.” The New York Times expressed alarm that so many people were wasting so much time with the puzzles. The New Republic magazine reported that the fad was sure to fade away in 1925; it repeated the claim in 1929. In 1930, The New York Times touted the fact that it had never run a crossword puzzle. The Times didn’t run one until 1942; their puzzle is now considered one of the gold standards of the genre. In the United Kingdom and many Commonwealth countries, the dominant form of crossword is the cryptic crossword. In these, the clue is a word puzzle, which must be solved first before filling in the solution. Roger Squires, who sets these types of puzzles, holds the world record for number of crosswords created. In 2007, he published his 66,666th puzzle, all of which totaled more than 2 million clues. During World War II, cryptologists at Bletchley Park in England were selected using a crossword competition.  Also during the war, It was also noted that an unusual number of military code words were showing up in puzzles in The Daily Telegraph.  In 1942, the French port of Dieppe appeared as an answer the day before an Allied raid on the port. Later, in the run up to D-Day, the words “Utah,” “Omaha,” “Overlord,” “Mulberry,” and “Neptune” were answers. All of them were codewords. The authorities suspected that the words were a form of espionage. An investigation by Britain’s MI5 determined that the puzzle’s creator was a school headmaster, who used answers supplied by his students. The school happened to be located next to an American and Canadian military base where the boys overheard the words.  Our question, what Broadway songwriter was responsible for introducing the cryptic crossword to the United States in New York magazine? Today is the December Solstice, meaning it’s the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the longest day in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s unofficially National Hamburger Day, National Kiwi Fruit Day, and National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day. It’s the birthday of musician Frank Zappa, who was born in 1940; actor Samuel L. Jackson, who is 68; and athlete Florence Griffith Joyner, who was born in 1959, whose records in the 100 and 200 meters still stand. Because our topic happened before 1960, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1979, the top song in the U.S. was “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” by Rupert Holmes. The No. 1 movie was “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” while the novel “Triple” by Ken Follett topped the New York Times Bestsellers list.  Weekly question What was the first broadcast network in the United States?

Programledare: Moa Svan.
