The passion of music and choreography in film was never more prevalent than in the Best Picture winner of 1961. West Side Story is a story about love, gangs, cultural wars, and ultimately tragedy. But mostly it's about the music and dance. We remember all the songs ... incredible tunes including Tonight, I Feel Pretty, Officer Krupke, and of course America. They have stood the test of time. We also love the story of two young adults madly in love amidst the turmoil and hate of other cultures within New York between the whites and the Puerto Ricans. However, does this movie hold up over six decades later? Do we still love the movie as a piece of filmmaking the way it was embraced in 1961?Listen to film critic Jack Ferdman's take on it as he analyzes everything about West Side Story, as well as many other films from that year, and hear which film he gives his Rewatch Oscar of 1961.Download, listen, and share ALL Rewatching Oscar episodes.SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW Rewatching Oscar:Website: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comApple Podcasts/iTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsiHeart RadioPodchaserPodcast AddictTuneInAlexaAmazon Overcasts Podcast Addict Player FMRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1815964.rssWebsite: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comSocial Media Links: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, BlueSkyShare your thoughts and suggestions with us through:Facebook Messanger or email us atjack@rewatchingoscar.com or jackferdman@gmail.comMusic by TurpacShow Producer: Jack FerdmanPodcast Logo Design: Jack FerdmanMovie (audio) trailer courtesy of MovieClips Classic TrailersMovie (audio) clips courtesy of YouTubeSupport us by downloading, sharing, and giving us a 5-star Rating. There are TV shows like "Better Call Saul", “Barry”, “Julia” and "Our Flag Means Death" to weigh in on, and movies like "The Batman", "Kimi" and "Everything Everywhere All at Once" to analyze. A wide array of classic and contemporary performers will get celebrated, including George Chakiris, John Cassavetes, Michelle Yeoh and Zoe Kravitz. Original Air Date: Monday 4 April, 9 pm EasternDescription: This week, Dean and Phil follow up on one of their best episodes ever by discussing the importance of manners as they relate to masks, shoes, and award shows! They have some bracing words about the nature of "safety" in show business. Then, they turn their attention to the Oscar-winning documentary Summer of Soul before discussing Oscar-winner George Chakiris and what he thought made original West Side Story choreographer Jerome Robbins so great. They also discuss the importance of representation, which leads to a discussion of an early Vincente Minnelli film, Cabin in the Sky from 1943, featuring an incredible all-black cast. That leads to a discussion of the version of A Star is Born produced by and starring Minnelli's one-time wife, Judy Garland. It was a remake, of course, and has been remade twice more. And speaking of remakes, Dean and Phil conclude by analyzing Kenneth Branagh's Death on the Nile, why it failed as a movie and what is being blamed for its failure at the box office.

In this first part of 2, it's an all out rumble on Fabulous Film and Friends, as we compare and contrast the two visions of the classic musical West Side Story—the 1961 version directed by Star Trek The Motion Picture's Robert Wise and the 2021 version directed by Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull's Steven Spielberg. The first version starred Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn. And the update stars Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez and Mike Faist. I'm joined once again by my stalwart war council of movie watchers and deep thinkers, Roseanne Caputi, Burton Brown, Dr. David Johnson and Gordon Alex Robertson. Welcome one and all! If, for whatever reason, you've never heard of this story and what it's all about here's, a synopsis: West Side Story is a musical retelling of William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet set in late 1950's New York where in the stead of feuding Italian families it's warring ethnic gangs. The white gang call themselves the Jets and are led by Riff and Tony and a Puerto Rican gang called the Sharks led by Bernardo and Chino. Tony, however, while one of the founders of the Jets, is starting to grow up and grow past gang life and predicts something coming in the future to fulfill him. And lo and behold when he attends a dance where the Jets and Sharks are both in attendance, Tony falls slackjawed, awestruck, head over heels in love with Bernardo's younger sister Maria, who has just arrived in America. Maria, equally gobsmacked by Tony, dances with him and kisses him in front of her friends and family, which incites an all out rumble between the Jets and the Sharks. Instantly and deeply and love with each other, Tony and Maria commit to marrying each other but before they can have peace, Maria entreats Tony to stop the rumble. Tony promises he will but as the fight unfolds, Bernardo kills Riff, who is Tony's best friend and like a brother to him. Grief-stricken and angry, Tony retaliates and stabs Bernardo, killing him as well. Through plot machinations and misunderstandings similar to Romeo and Juliet, Tony and Maria's innocent and tender love is spoiled by the hatred of one group towards another and we leave the theater to ponder whether love can conquer all? Is that what's truly important as we battle over which version is better?Find out!
Academy Award & Golden Globe winner, George Chakiris, is perhaps best known internationally for his role of Bernardo in West Side Story. In Nov of 2012, Chakiris received what many refer to as the highest honor in Hollywood - His Hand & Foot Prints were placed in cement for all history in connection with the 50th anniversary of classic film West Side Story which premiered at Grauman's over 50 years ago. George Chakiris was born in Norwood, Ohio. He is the son of Steven and Zoe Chakiris. They were immigrants from Greece. A graduate of the American School of Dance, Chakiris recalls the early days of passing the Grauman's Chinese Theatre, "where the worlds most glamorous people were seen," never thinking that one day he would be attending his own premiere for "Westside Story" (For which he received a Golden Globe and an Academy Award) and eventually, in Dec, 2011, would have his hand and foot prints placed in the famous forecourt, among those whom he had idolized. In 1947, Chakiris made his film debut in the chorus of Song of Love. Later he appeared in several small roles, usually as a dancer or a member of the chorus in various musical films. He was one of the dancers in Marilyn Monroe's "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" number in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes released in 1953. He again appeared as a dancer alongside Rosemary Clooney in "White Christmas" in "Love, You Didn't Do Right by Me." In 1961, George's biggest success came with the film West Side Story, for which he won the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Bernardo, leader of the Sharks. He had also appeared as Riff, leader of the Jets, in the West End in London. He starred as a doctor in the film Diamond Head released in 1963, opposite Charlton Heston and Yvette Mimieux, and in 1967, he appeared alongside Gene Kelly in Jacques Demy's French musical Les Demoiselles de Rochefort. Besides films, Chakiris performed on Broadway and for television. In the early 1960s, he embarked on a career as a pop singer, resulting in a couple of minor hit songs. In 1960, he recorded one single with noted producer Joe Meek. George worked more in television in the 1970s and 1980s, appearing on such shows as Wonder Woman, Medical Center, Hawaii Five-O, Dallas, Murder, She Wrote and the TV daytime drama Santa Barbara In Superboy, he appeared as Professor Peterson during the series first two seasons from 1988-1990. Chakiris's last role to date was in a 1996 episode of the sitcom Last of the Summer Wine. FROM THE SILVER SCREEN TO STERLING SILVER - George Chakiris, parlayed his talent from the Silver Screen to Sterling Silver Jewelry, featuring necklaces, bracelets, earrings, dramatic belts and more. Many of his designs have been inspired by colleagues such as Marilyn Monroe and Rosemarie Clooney, whom he had the privelege of dancing with, in "Gentlemen Prefer Blonds" and "White Christmas" respectfully. Living a life with passion for the creative arts drew George quite by chance to jewelry making as a hobby. What began as a diversion became a full time appreciation for design and construction and a new creative outlet, which became The George Chakiris Collections. Chakiris recently unveiled his latest collection in Japan. The George Chakiris collections are now on display at Tokyo's prestigious Mitsukoshi Department Store as well as in America online at his georgechakiris.com. 00h 00'00" Presentación 00h 02'41" Cabecera 00h 04'10" Overture 00h 09'51" Prologue 00h 17'19" Jet song 00h 19'55" Something's coming 00h 23'25" The dance at the gym 00h 33'17" Maria 00h 36'11" América 00h 41'33" Tonight 00h 48'40" Gee, officer Krupke 00h 54'12" I feel pretty 00h 58'33" One hand, one heart 01h 02'04" Tonight quintet 01h 06'44" The rumble 01h 10'22" Somewhere 01h 12'46" Cool 01h 18'11" A boy like that / I have a love 01h 23'26" Taunted scene 01h 26'20" Finale 01h 30'40" Curiosidades y anécdotas 01h 31'53" End credits 01h 38'06" América Broadway Cast 01h 43'03" Ballet sequence complete 01h 53'26" Me siento hermosa 01h 56'47" Tonight Quintet 02h 00’25” Un hombre así / I have a love 02h 08’36” Symphonic dances
For Video Editon, Please Click and Subscribe Here: https://youtu.be/2ICFKnhAfJ4 The making and impact of West Side Story has so far been recounted only in vestiges. In the pages of this book, the backstage tale comes to life along with insight on what has made the film a favorite across six decades: its brilliant use of dance as staged by erstwhile co-director Jerome Robbins; a meaningful story, as set to Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's soundtrack; the performances of a youthful ensemble cast featuring Natalie Wood, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, and more; a film with Shakespearean roots (Romeo and Juliet) that is simultaneously timeless and current. West Side Story was a triumph that appeared to be very much of its time; over the years it has shown itself to be eternal. Richard Barrios received degrees in both music and film history and worked in both music and film before turning his attention to writing. Still in the realm of musicals, he then directed his attention to a beloved film with WEST SIDE STORY: THE JETS, THE SHARKS, AND THE MAKING OF A CLASSIC (2020). For Busby Berkeley: Going Through the Roof, a co-production of PBS Great Performances, Turner Classic Movies, and Channel 4 (UK), Barrios was both narrator and onscreen commentator. Barrios served as both programmer and lecturer for the film series “Musicals Before the Code.” Among the many venues where he has spoken and presented films are the 92nd Street Y in New York, the American Film Institute, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Gershwin Festival in Washington DC. https://www.amazon.com/West-Side-Story-Sharks-Classic/dp/076246948X

Third time is the charm! Twice scheduled to grace my living room pre-pandemic, what a Thanksgiving gift Academy Award and Golden Globe Winner, George Chakiris is. Perfectly timed. Ridiculously easy on the eyes, he defies the passage of time and is as gracefully humble in word and deed as he is gliding across a dance floor, or the streets of the barrio, as the case may be. Forever, Bernardo, we dove into a multitude of his other films, from his first, singing with a boys choir opposite Katherine Hepburn in Song of Love, to background dancer alongside Marilyn Monroe, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosalind Russell, and Cyd Charisse, to name but a few. Taking his first dance class at 19, he did over a dozen films almost immediately, and went from gypsy to starring in the London production of West Side Story, as… wait for it, Riff. George had not only never acted, he'd nary taken an acting class, and yet in short shrift, he was earning an Oscar, as Bernardo opposite Rita Moreno, in the winningest musical of all time, besting Montgomery Clift, Peter Falk, George C Scott, and Jackie Gleason. A multitude of dramatic films followed, starring opposite Yul Brenner, Charlton Heston, Gene Kelly, Richard Widmark, and Yvette Mimieux, which names but a few. Fabulous stories about fabulous women, Judy Garland (genuis), Liza Minelli, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlene Dietrich, Shirley Jones, Natalie Wood, Elaine Stritch, and a great one about Elvis. As taken with all of the above as I think we'd be, George's refreshing humility is a gentle kiss to Hollywood glitz and glamour. Speaking of glitz, George parlayed his talent from the silver screen to sterling silver Jewelry, featuring necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and more. BLING! I was shocked to discover he not only designes the gorgeous pieces, he silversmiths them into reality. Perfect holiday gifts for that very special someone. You? I've got my eye on one or two. georgechakiris.com I'm currently devouring George's memoir, My West Side Story, with story upon story of the movie and all that is George Chakiris's delicious life. https://amzn.to/30OeD36 These have been challenging days. Spending time with gorgeous George fills my gratitude jar to the rim. Just in time. Happy Thanksgiving. Please pardon the sound at the top of the show. Tech issues glitched the glitz. Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film. In this episode, we're talking about 1961's West Side Story, which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won ten, making it still the all-time most successful musical at the Oscars. Based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and with a score by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a screenplay by Ernest Lehman, this was the highest grossing film of 1961 and pretty much changed the face of movie musicals forever. The Hollywood Reporter said ‘It is so good that superlatives are superfluous. Let it be noted that the film musical, the one dramatic form that is purely American and purely Hollywood, has never been done better”. Tonight we'll be heading to the roof with Bernardo, played by George Chakiris and Anita, played by Rita Moreno. And along the way we'll stop off at the bridal shop with Tony, played by Richard Beymer and Maria, played by Natalie Wood. Are these relationships wild and bright or are they going mad, shooting stars into space? Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Academy Award Winning Actor, George Chakiris. He is best known for his appearance in the 1961 film version of West Side Story as Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks gang, for which he won both the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture.West Side Story had been running for a year on Broadway, and Chakiris auditioned for Jerome Robbins. He was cast in the London production as Riff, leader of the Jets. The musical launched on the West End in late 1958, and Chakiris received excellent reviews, playing it for almost 22 months. The Mirisch Brothers bought the film rights to West Side Story and tested Chakiris. They ended up feeling his dark complexion made him more ideal for the role of Bernardo, leader of the Sharks, and cast Russ Tamblyn as Riff. The film of West Side Story (1961) was hugely successful, and Chakiris won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. In the early 1960s, he embarked on a career as a pop singer, resulting in a couple of minor hit songs. In 1960, he recorded one single with noted producer Joe Meek.He has given occasional television interviews since then but is mostly retired. His hobby of making sterling silver jewelry has turned into a new occupation, working as a jewelry designer for his own brand, George Chakiris Collections, consisting of handmade original sterling silver jewelry. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com https://www.georgechakiris.com/#georgechakiris #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Lehet-e a hollywoodi stúdiórendszeren kívül is újrateremteni a musical aranykorának a sikereit?
