Hello everyone! In today's episode I describe my first time experience watching a cross country race at a local park and share the excitement and joy of seeing my students participate in the race, and the sense of fulfillment that comes from witnessing their accomplishments. It was such a positive experience to be part of students' success and the wider community.  Scripts and useful expression below. Let me know if you have any questions or have any suggestions. Have a wonderful day! 越野 (yuèyě) - Cross country赛区冠军赛 (sàiqū guànjūnsài) - Conference championship坚持努力 (jiānchí nǔlì) - Perseverance加油 (jiāyóu) - Cheer on, encourage高兴 (gāoxìng) - Happy, delighted谦虚 (qiānxū) - Humble全力以赴 (quánlì yǐfù) - Give it your all棚子 (péngzi) - Tent or canop目标 (mùbiāo) - Goal, objective激动 (jīdòng) - Excited回报 (huíbào) - Return, reward沉浸 (chénjìn) - Immerse喜悦 (xǐyuè) - Joy流畅 (liúchàng) - Smooth, fluent夸张 (kuāzhāng) - ExaggerateSupport the showThank you for listening. ...and we are back! This episode was recorded live from the finish of the 2022 Arkansas High Country Race in beautiful Hot Springs, AR where Ezra and Andrew sat down for an in person conversation with 3rd place finisher Daniel Connell. The conversation begins with a much too short exploration of Dan's extensive touring excursions in Central America, across the entirety of Africa (@locociclos on IG) , and on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route . We discuss the challenges and benefits of "winging it" while on an adventure, trip saving encounters with members of the Sudanese national cycling team, and much much more. We eventually transition to all things AHCR, where Dan and Ezra give a day by day recap of their battle for the final podium spot in the mountains of Arkansas...Spoiler alert: Dan wins!

Bike Talk with Dave: Bicycle racing, cyclocross, gravel, mountain bike, road and tech

Sparkling streams, hills and hollows, shady rivers, mountain views, waterfalls, swimming holes, historic sites, bustling cities – the Arkansas High Country Route has it all. According to local route designer Chuck Campbell, “That route don't go no where — It just runs around everywhere!” Indeed, this route is designed to connect many of the interesting places in west-central and northwest Arkansas. We connected with Race Director Andrew Onermaa to talk about the AHCR and what it takes to complete the 1000-mile, 450-mile and 187-mile back country bike packing routes. We also talk about the scholarship program to help people defray the cost of registering for the race - thanks to a legacy gift left by a bike packing enthusiast named Daniel Collins. Thanks to Andrew for taking the time to talk with me and tell us all about the Arkansas High Country Race - be sure to follow them on instagram and facebook at arhighcountryrace and check out all the details online at arkansashighcountry.com - and if you want to apply for an entry fee scholarship send your request directly to Andrew at race@arkansashighcountry.com. The Aldrich Family, a popular radio teenage situation comedy (1939-1953), was also presented in films, television and comic books. In the radio series' well-remembered weekly opening exchange, awkward teen Henry's mother called, "Hen-reeeeeeeeeeeee! Hen-ree Al-drich!", and he responded with a breaking adolescent voice, "Com-ing, Mother!". Henry Aldrich was an endearingly bumbling kid growing awkwardly into adolescence, and The Aldrich Family often revolved around Henry's misadventures with the girls and with his friends.Henry Aldrich was the creation of playwright Clifford Goldsmith. Aldrich began on Broadway as a minor character in Goldsmith's play What a Life. Produced and directed by George Abbott, The actor who brought Henry to life on stage was 20-year-old Ezra Stone, who was billed near the bottom as the 20th actor in the cast. Stone was also employed as the play's production assistant. When Rudy Vallee saw the play, he asked Goldsmith to adapt it into some sketches for his radio program, and this was followed in 1938 by a 39-week run of a sketch comedy series on The Kate Smith Hour with Stone continuing in the role of Henry. Kate Smith's director, Bob Welsh, is credited with the creation of the "Hen-reeeeeeeeeeeee! Hen-ree Al-drich!" opening, which eventually became one of the most famous signature sounds in radio. After finding an audience with Kate Smith's listeners, The Aldrich Family was launched in its own series as a summer replacement program for Jack Benny in 1939 on NBC. The Aldriches survived its replacement status and ran from 1939 to 1944. After a brief hiatus, the show moved to CBS, running on Fridays from 1944 until 1946 with sponsors Grape Nuts and Jell-O before moving back to NBC from 1946 to 1951 on Thursdays and, then, as a sustaining program in its final run of September 21, 1952 to April 19, 1953 on Sundays.

From the export of the Chicago Police Department’s interrogation experts to Iraq after 2003, to casual references of the US-Indian Wars by US soldiers in Vietnam, Race and America’s Long War (University of California Press, 2017) highlights how the policies and cultural norms of war have become deeply intertwined with, and often dependent on, the architecture of racial difference inside and outside the United States. Blurring the lines between domestic and international affairs, configurations of war represent subtle and direct continuities of US imperialism, colonialism, and structural racism, sometimes across centuries and other times within the same Presidential administration. This book is a collection of essays by Nikhil Pal Singh in which he traces the racialized narratives of security in the United States from the settler colonial wars to acquire Indigenous land, through several centuries of slavery and the period of Reconstruction that followed, through the Civil Rights era and Black Freedom struggles to the Vietnam and Iraq Wars among many other periods and movements, and finally in the context of the more amorphous Wars on Drugs and Terror. Singh draws out one of the core paradoxes of contemporary liberalism, long posited as a remedy to perpetual war, in highlighting that while, “racial exclusion and inclusion have arisen in tandem, so have colorblindness and multiculturalism.” Published in a year of political transition often depicted as a grave departure from the country’s structural and moral past, Singh alternatively frames the current political crisis in terms of five hundred years of continuous inner- and outer-wars, suggesting alternatively that this political transition is a period to confront the long held norms of public life that produced it. Nikhil Pal Singh is Associate Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis and History. He is author of Black is a Country: Race and the Unfinished Struggle for Democracy. Anna Levy is an independent researcher and policy analyst with interests in critical political economy, historical memory, histories and philosophies of normalization, accountability politics, science and technology, and structural inequality. From 1984-1997 I worked retail pharmacy. If you count the years I spent working retail as a pharmacy intern whilst in college at North Dakota State University, I had spent 17 years in this particular chapter of my life.In 1997, I started writing a new chapter when I landed a job with a pharmacy benefit management company. For the next 17 years, I applied my trade in an environment where I no longer needed to work nights, weekends, and holidays like I had while in retail. During this time, Podium Boy was born (April 2000) and I also started working from home part-time, and then finally was full-time from home for the last three years. This was greatly advantageous as any parent with a youngin' can attest to.This past Friday was my last day with this company. The time had come for me to close that chapter and write the next one. One that hopefully take me through to retirement. And more importantly, leave a legacy, be more rewarding, and be much less stressful than the past employment.I embark on this period of unemployment with a blank piece of paper, with no idea what career I might attempt to pursue. But to start with, I'm actually going to be a volunteer coach for the Wayzata Middle School cross country team. And first up was the annual Alumni race, pitting the current 7-12 grade class versus the past alumni, or parent of a current runner. Somehow, the alumni always manage to win. It was no different today.Start of the Alumni RaceI ran this race with the sole purpose of being a rabbit and pace setter for Podium Boy. We planned to go out at about 6:30 or better pace and then hold it as best we could. There are two fairly significant, albeit short, climbs that really sap the legs.I'm in the white cap, Podium Boy in blue shirtWe went through the first mile in 6:28 and I was really happy with our position and with how Podium Boy was responding to several mini-surges. Much of the course was on a single-track wood chip trail and often we'd have to surge past slower runners when the opportunity presented itself as the trail was lined by trees on either side. The wood chip trail was nice on the old bonesJust a little over one mile inWe came to the last hill with about one-half mile to go. I was started to struggle and Podium Boy was laboring on the hill. However, upon cresting I told him to go if he had gas left and he went. This was very pleasing that he was able to pick up the pace after a climb this early in the season. He opened up around 10-yards on me and maintained that going into the finish.Podium Boy zooms for the finish linePodium Boy beats me fair & squareIt was a great day to be running cross country as the weather was ideal. And it was a great way to begin my new chapter in the book of life.Next RaceAugust 25 - Minneapolis DuathlonOn DeckSeptember 14 - Park Tool "Fall Classic" DuathlonSeptember 21 - Trees and Trails 5K
