The highway is loud, the stakes are louder, and we still hit record. We're rolling south on I-90 in the Proud American Express, headed for the Erie County Fair in Hamburg, New York, and we're doing it on limited sleep, last-minute repairs, and sheer commitment to keep the podcast streak alive. If you've ever tried to build a small business while life keeps moving, you'll recognize every ounce of this pressure. We talk through the behind-the-scenes reality of preparing for a major vendor event: fixing a bus with expensive parts and tight timing, testing just enough to take the leap, and trusting the people who show up to help when the plan gets heavy. Then we get into the grind of inventory management for an apparel brand, including pushing hundreds of heat-pressed items into stock, launching new products, and trying to get everything organized before stepping onto the fairgrounds. But the real core is mindset. Vendor checklists, insurance requirements, sales tax certificates, tent rules, inspections, and potential fines can spiral into imposter syndrome fast, especially when you feel like you “mortgaged the farm” to take the shot. We say the quiet parts out loud, then walk through how we're handling the anxiety in real time: focusing on the next right step, leaning on faith, and choosing to grow through the stress instead of just going through it.If this hits home, subscribe, share the episode with a friend building something hard, and leave a review so more people can find these honest conversations. Every year, the Vermont Edition team heads out to a Vermont fair to bring you the sounds and voices of our states favorite summertime traditions. Today we come to you live from Addison County Fair and Field Days in New Haven. This hour we'll get to know the fair's history, talk with 4-H members and animal experts, and get a little taste — literally — of what the fair has to offer. We're joined today by a host of guests that bring different energies and expertise to the fair-going experience. Benj Deppman is a fair board member whose roots run deep at the Addison Fair. We're also joined by Scythe Sister Michaela Stickney to learn about hand mowing competitions. Sugarhouse manager Andrew Rainville brings some of the fairs blue ribbon winners in the maple contest. Ethan Gervy coordinates the fair's demolition derby and is joined alongside Dylan Mason who has participated in the derby for the past two years and is competing this year as well. Dairy superintendent Stephanie Pope joins us alongside 16 year old 4-H competitor to talk about showing dairy cows. We hear from children's performer Pirate Man Dan who tells us what makes Addison County's fair distinct from the many others he performs at around the country. And board member Meghan Sutton tells us about the home and garden barn. Broadcast live on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026, at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
Holy Hump Day, Batman! We are loaded this morning as we head towards the weekend. In the news, the latest on the clean-up of the encampment in Madison, Kelly Osbourne posts & deletes some "cryptic" stuff on social media, a recall on nut butter sold at Walmart, Bryan Kohberger is looking for a new attorney, a Space-X rocket is going to crash into the moon today In sports, the Brewers beat the Pirates last night, Bijan Robinson…Zay Flowers…and Darnell Wright all signed contract extensions yesterday, Brock Lesnar announces his retirement on the Pat McAfee show, the NASCAR Clash is moving back to Daytona in 2027, and the NCAAF pre-season rankings are released. We talked about what's on TV & streaming today/tonight. Plus, Zac Brown killed on Family Feud last night, and a celebrity version of "The Voice" is coming. County Fairs have a long history of amazing food, local & national music acts, various forms of entertainment….and plenty of other weird traditions. Here's a list of some of the more interesting things that happen at county fairs across America. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a dad who pretended to be his 11 year-old daughter on TikTok so he could attempt to kill her alleged rapist, a #Florida restaurant that launches a nude dining experience, a couple in Taiwan that were busted having sex in an IKEA, and a Canadian woman who got pulled over and had TWELVE fake IDs.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

That Don't Sound Right is a podcast about talking—the way we did before the internet, when you couldn't instantly prove anyone right or wrong and all the expertise lived in the people around the conversation. We hope you enjoy our conversations, and if you ever find yourself thinking, That Don't Sound Right, send us a comment. You're one of us. This week, Peter and Cecil take a nostalgic trip through one of America's most beloved traditions—the county fair. From prize-winning hay bales and giant gourds to elaborate LEGO creations, decorated vegetables, homemade crafts, baked goods, and collections you never knew people judged, they explore the wonderfully quirky competitions that make local fairs so memorable. Along the way, the conversation drifts into childhood memories, favorite fair exhibits, the surprising pride behind earning a blue ribbon, and the unique personalities that keep these hometown traditions alive. The hosts even share a memorable "Judge's Choice" story that proves sometimes the most unexpected entries leave the biggest impression. Why do people spend months growing the perfect pumpkin, arranging vegetables into works of art, or carefully displaying lifelong collections? Peter and Cecil celebrate the creativity, community, friendly competition, and simple joy that make county fairs a cherished part of small-town life. Whether you grew up walking the livestock barns, admiring the quilt displays, or heading straight for the funnel cakes, this episode is a fun reminder of why county fairs continue to bring generations together. Because somewhere between the giant zucchini, the prize-winning tomatoes, and the blue ribbon hay bale... you'll probably find yourself saying, That Don't Sound Right. #tdsrpodcast #ThatDontSoundRight #CountyFair #StateFair #BlueRibbon #SmallTownAmerica #Agriculture #FairSeason #Nostalgia #Community #LEGO #Homemade #CountryLife #FarmLife #Americana #LocalTraditions #FunnelCake #SmallTownStories Connect with us:
