She received the MBA Distinguished Teaching Award for her work in numerous courses, including Interpersonal Dynamics (the most popular elective course at the GSB for over 45 years). She is the Co-Founder of Leaders in Tech for leaders of high growth tech companies committed to building high-performing and culturally healthy organizations. In addition to her teaching, she has coached and consulted for individuals and groups of high-profile executives for the last fifteen years. Her clients work with her to develop their interpersonal skills, update limiting mental models, and learn to modify their style. She has become internationally known for her expertise in interpersonal relations and, particularly, experiential small group learning. The Broad Center at the Yale School of Management fosters the ideas, policies, and leadership to help all students in K-12 public schools — particularly those from underserved communities — to learn and thrive.  Broad is a stellar example of the unique mission of Yale SOM: educating leaders for business and society. Since I feel connected and inspired by the mission, I appreciate how much the presence of Broad in my experience at Yale keeps me particularly connected and inspired by the noble and meaningful work of transforming the school system. In March of 2024, the Broad Fellows were part of an immersion learning experience with me. I love Broad and was inspired by the way they engaged in learning through an immersion intensive. Many of us would rank getting along with colleagues as an important aspect of work, but, as Amy Gallo explains, relationships devoid of disagreement can actually be less productive. “While our natural human instinct is to avoid conflict, I believe that conflicts are not only an inevitable part of interacting with other humans, but they're a necessary part.”Gallo is a workplace expert, host of HBR's Women at Work podcast, and the author of Getting Along: How to Work With Anyone. Across her work, Gallo touts that the key to transforming conflicts into something productive is to understand its root cause and learn how to reframe them. “Even at the base of those unhealthy conflicts or those unproductive conflicts is something that needs to be resolved,” she says. Ed also provides insight into their experience with a course called "Interpersonal Dynamics" at Stanford, also known as "touchy-feely”. He provides a historical context, detailing the course's evolution and its enduring impact on individuals and organizations. [17:09] With the increasing challenges in this world, including social, political, and economic issues, Ed explains that there is a need for coaching, particularly among leaders. In the current environment, leaders may find it challenging to navigate these complexities and may feel compelled to issue statements or commitments that prove difficult to fulfill. With this, the need for leaders to address these challenges in coaching relationships is crucial, because coaching provides a safe space for leaders to acknowledge the pressure they face, discuss the complexity of issues, and explore different perspectives.  [20:11] He discusses the challenges faced by leaders in addressing social and political issues within the current tumultuous and polarized environment. Ed highlights the complexity of these issues and the pressure leaders feel to adopt simplified stances that may not align with the best interests of their businesses. He also emphasized the importance of acknowledging the nuanced needs of various stakeholders, including employees and customers. Ed also diverted into the topic of impacts of virtual work on social connections, suggesting that even in virtual settings, finding ways to create in-person experiences can foster social cohesion, and how to address problems in the workplace. [30:19] Ed Bautista contrasts one-on-one coaching, highlighting its high fidelity and settled mindset, with challenges faced by leaders in group settings, especially in virtual environments. He stresses the importance of camera use, in virtual meetings, and recommends one-on-one interactions within group contexts for deeper insights. Ed provides advice on group facilitation, emphasizing a leader's intervention when necessary, and the consideration of external facilitators.  Ed advises workplace leaders to offer support, coaching, and clear expectations while cautioning against prematurely assigning leadership responsibilities. [38:44] He talks about the challenges individuals face when transitioning from individual contributor roles to leadership positions. There is a need for a shift in mindset, especially for those who were valued for their technical expertise. He also highlights the emotional difficulty in relinquishing the role of the "smartest person in the room" and adapting to a new way of adding value as a leader. Ed also notes the misconception of overworking as a way to add value and stresses the importance of understanding where one truly adds the greatest value, focusing on high-impact tasks rather than routine activities. GUEST David has been teaching the landmark Interpersonal Dynamics course (informally called as Touchy Feely by many) at Stanford for over 50 years. He has distilled some of his learnings and insight from these five decades in a recently published book titled – Connect: Building Exceptional Relationships with Family, Friends and Colleagues. Born and raised in Guatemala Central America; Luis is a brain tumor survivor and an avid endurance athlete. He has completed over 100 marathons and ultramarathons, some at the 100-mile range and 9 Ironman Triathlons. He is currently writing a book “Ordinary Resilience” which is a blend of autobiography, research, and how-to guide for overcoming fear, finding strength, undergoing change, finding passion, and building relationships.
