Dr. Charlotte Markey, is a world-leading expert in body image research, having studied all things body image, eating behavior, and weight management for her entire adult life (about 25 years!). She is passionate about understanding what makes us feel good about our bodies and helping people to develop a healthy body image. Charlotte loves to share her body image wisdom with others and is an experienced book author, blogger, and professor at Rutgers University, Camden. One of the things that I found fascinating and why I had to get her on the podcast, is that she has written a book specifically aimed at tween and teen boys in this area called, “Being You: The Body Image Book for Boys." She's also written the counterpart to this book, "The Body Image Book for Girls." YES, boys and men struggle with our body image as well and it's super-important that we are able and willing to talk about this often uncomfortable area. In this episode, Charlotte shares her wealth of knowledge in this area. We discuss general body image issues and we even talk a bit about some of her research into how chronic pain can impact our body image. So, if you or someone you love struggles with chronic pain, this will be a great episode for you as well. The research paper that we discussed during part of the episode is titled, "Body image experiences in the context of chronic pain: An examination of associations among perceptions of pain, body dissatisfaction, and positive body image" by Charlotte H.Markey, Jamie L.Dunaev, and Kristin J.August in 2019. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.bodyim.2019.11.005 To connect with Charlotte or to learn more about her work: www.TheBodyImageBookforGirls.com www.TheBodyImageBookforBoys.com IG: @char_markey Twitter: @char_markey Facebook: DrCharlotteMarkey ========================== If you'd like to contact me to work together, provide feedback on the podcast, ask clarifying questions, provide a suggestion for a guest or future episode, or for any other reason you can find me at: IG: @intuitive.eating.men Web: hopedrivesme.com

Both the directness and the intensity with which we express disagreement influence the solution. A paper titled “The Directness and Oppositional Intensity of Conflict Expression” explored combinations of high or low directness and high or low intensity in expressing opposition. The best approach, according to the paper, is high directness/low intensity. In that case, the clear expression of opposition leads to a clear understanding of it. And a low intensity approach allows those involved to focus on the problem they are trying to solve and to avoid getting caught up in personal attacks or defenses. Say what you mean, mean what you say – but get your point across without being mean. The brief newspaper article featuring the research paper can be found here: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/10/business/be-direct-and-low-key-to-defuse-discord-at-the-office.html “Applied Science” column, New York Times, May 10, 2015, Phyllis Korkki, “Defuse Discord at the Office: Be More Direct”. Bogi Ágústsson fór yfir stöðuna í Danmörku í Heimsglugganum í dag, hann ræddi stöðu Theresu May, forsætisráðherra Bretlands, sem nú hefur gefið í skyn að hún kunni að leggja sama Brexit-samninginn fyrir þingið og felldur hefur verið í þrígang.

TRANSMISSION INTERCEPTED 03/01/99 18:48 TRANSCRIPT FOLLOWS: I’m close to cracking the black box but it’s been a nightmare. Kristin Jónsdóttir totally modified security protocol without informing any of the higher ups and I have nothing else to go on. When the gas ignited the whole facility blew and this one little hard drive is all that’s left to tell us what happened in there beside some chargrilled mantises and the remains of at least five unidentified specimens. Doctor Jónsdóttir was keeping a whole lot of secrets from us and it’s my job to find out just how many. If a main facility could hide so much from us we have to question the security of the entire operation. With all due respect sir, your decision to oust Bias was ill timed. We’re losing our grip, and if Babel splinters… well sir, it doesn’t bear thinking about. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Written by Elodie Cunningham: https://twitter.com/ChemyWords Performed and produced by Andrew Jones Recording support given by the Leith Recording Company: https://www.leithrecordingcompany.com/ Find more of Andrew's voice work at http://anightofhorror.co.uk/ Background Music used was Panic Man 3 by David Fesliyan: http://www.fesliyanstudios.com/ The Babel theme is Serene Darkness, which you can listen to in full here: https://chemicalwordsmith.bandcamp.com/track/serene-darkness
