The Department of Veterans Affairs is one of the most complex organizations in government. At the center of this complexity is VA disability ratings and compensation; a program developed over 200 years ago to compensate service members while they recovered from service. Today, this program is convoluted, lengthy and often the most challenging process a Veteran must endure during transition to civilian life. Daniel Gade, a retired Army Officer, combat-wounded amputee and author of Wounding Warriors: How Bad Policy is Making Veterans Sicker and Poorer joins host Fran Racioppi to challenge the current one-size fits all approach to VA disability compensation calling it outdated and antiquated; as well as providing recommendations for reform. Daniel served in the Bush and Obama administrations and was the Republican nominee in the 2020 election to represent Virginia in the US Senate.Read the full episode transcription here and learn more on The Jedburgh Podcast Website.Highlights:-Daniel breaks down the VA disability claims process through a personal account of his combat and non-combat related injuries, including a detailed account of being wounded twice in Iraq and the events leading to the loss of his leg.-We explain the numbers behind the VA, the increase in disability claims over the last two decades, the addition of bi-partisian policy and the cost of disability claims as related to other VA education and health programs.-After losing his leg in Iraq, Daniel explains how he took control of his rehabilitation by focusing on the future, what factors would aid in his recovery and what must be done to “self-rescue.”-Daniel used extreme sports like triathlons and cross-fit to prove he could recover and raise his expectations of himself and his ability to thrive as an amputee.-The concept of “Stolen Valor” demonstrates how too many people misrepresent their service, the level of their injuries and their disabilities to increase their payments from the VA leading to increased policy complexity and bureaucracy.-Daniel defines the term “permanent and total” and shows how it allows veterans to avoid treatment to ensure continued compensation.-The path to reform requires three initiatives: focus on employment, link compensation to treatment, separation of military-related injuries vs those incurred while in the military.Quotes:-”It causes veterans to see themselves as sick, or as disabled, or as useless and worthless.”-”Receiving benefits from government has become much more normalized across society.”-”We should be much more careful about how we use the word disability. The current process uses disability for anything wrong with a veteran.”-”The VA spends more on veterans staying sick than veterans getting better.”-”The VA's priority is on paying people disability benefits. Not on rehabilitating them, educating them, housing them, or helping them in other ways.”-“It ripped a chunk out of my thigh and I woke up in a ditch.”-”I was in a surgeon's care in 37 minutes and my blood pressure was 60 over 0.”-”My philosophy has always been find a solution and engage in whatever the solution might be.”-“I realized right then that I wanted to be a person who can do anything.”-”The veterans' Iron Triangle is the most difficult Iron Triangle in all of politics.” Daniel's Three Daily Foundations to Success:-Hug my kids-Connect to something greater than yourself-Find a way to serve othersThis episode is brought to you by Jersey Mike's, 18A Fitness and Analytix Solutions.

(11/11/21) Retired US Army lieutenant colonel, American University professor, public policy leader and former Republican Senate candidate from Virginia Daniel Gade teamed up with Wall Street Journal Reporter Daniel Huang for his new book Wounding Warriors: How Bad Policy is Making Veterans Sicker and Poorer. Drawing from interviews with dozens of veterans along with years of internal reporting, the book lays deep structural rot inside the Department of Veterans Affairs and what we can all do to turn things around. Join us for a look at how we can really support the troops in this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large on WBAI.
“Daniel M. Gade is a retired US Army lieutenant colonel, avid hunter, former US Senate candidate, and twice-wounded combat veteran. His new, hard-hitting book blows the lid off of how our country treats veterans as if we are all sick and broken, and then turns around and wonders why we have so many sick veterans. General Mattis calls it a “must-read”. His book “Wounding Warriors” is available now at: https://www.woundingwarriors.com (signed copy) or on Amazon. Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Daniel Gade graduated from West Point and eventually served as a tank company commander as part of the Second Infantry Division in Iraq in 2004-2005. While serving there, Gade was wounded twice. The second set of injuries nearly killed him and did lead to the amputation of his right leg. Exactly one year after that horrific attack, Col. Gade began graduate school and became a triathlete. He also took an intense interest in the veterans benefits program, which he believe is a badly arranged system leading to tragic results for our nations heroes. He is the author of "Wounding Warriors: How Bad Policy Is Making Veterans Sicker and Poorer."
This week Burke speaks with Daniel Gade, an amputee veteran who lost his leg while serving as a commander in Iraq back in 2005. Gade has spent his time post-service critiquing the services provided by the VA, discussing some of the horror stories he personally experienced after his amputation. Gade's book, Wounding Warriors: How Bad Policy Is Making Veterans Sicker and Poorer, goes into great detail talking about serious issues within the VA system and how they care for veterans after their time of service. Gade is a professor and activist for veterans' rights and hopes to draw attention to these issues after hearing other stories around the country. You can preorder Daniel's book on his site for a signed copy, Gade has also partnered with a variety of veteran's organizations. A new book says federal policy makes the nation's veterans sicker and poorer. Its author is not just anybody. Daniel Gade is a former Army lieutenant colonel, who lost a leg in combat, now an adjunct lecturer in public administration and policy at American University. He's the co-author and publisher of Wounding Warriors, How Bad Policy is Making Veterans Sicker and Poorer., a book about VA policy.
A NEW BOOK HAS BEEN CALLED “AN UNFLINCHING APPRAISAL” OF HOW THE DEPT. OF VETERAN AFFAIRS REWARDS DISINGENUITY AND DISHONESTY IN IT'S FLAWED SYSTEM. JOINING US TO DISCUSS IS RETIRED U.S. ARMY LT. COL. DANIEL GADE, CO-AUTHOR OF “WOUNDING WARRIORS: HOW BAD POLICY IS MAKING VETERANS SICKER AND POORER.”
Daniel Gade enlisted in the Army in 1992 and deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom as a company commander in August 2004. He was wounded by enemy fire twice and decorated for valor; the second wounding resulted in the amputation of his entire right leg. After retiring from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2017, he accepted a political appointment as a Senior Advisor at the US Department of Labor's Veterans Employment and Training Service (VETS). In 2019, he ran unsuccessfully for United States Senate in Virginia, but garnered more votes than any Republican candidate in Virginia history. Daniel's military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, the Combat Action Badge, Ranger Tab, Presidential Service Badge, and both Airborne and Air Assault wings. He and his family reside in Mount Vernon, Virginia. Daniel's book Wounding Warriors: How Bad Policy Is Making Veterans Sicker and Poorer explores the ways in which the VA Healthcare System creates incentives for veterans to stay sick and poor.
Jesse Ventura and Brigida Santos discuss the Pandora Papers and how world leaders, celebrities, criminals and the uber wealthy hide their money in offshore accounts. Army veteran Daniel Gade talks about improving the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Daniel Gade spent a year in hospital after losing his leg while serving in the US Army in Iraq, yet, he is by no means a victim. Rather he is a passionate advocate for helping wounded warriors to thrive. His life story (which is far from over) holds a powerful lesson on actively choosing how you will show up for life, regardless of the circumstances you find yourself in. In a period of history when so many people are almost encouraged to operate from a victim mindset, Dan is testament to the principle that we are the creators of our own destiny and that those experiences which test us the most can ultimately shape us in the most positively transformative ways. Dan's book Wounding Warriors is available at www.woundingwarriors.com or Amazon.

Dan joins his friend and fellow veteran LTC Daniel Gade, PhD to recount their post-combat injury experiences with the VA's perverse structure of incentivizes which cause veterans to become sicker, poorer, and disempowered. We look at the policies and culture which enable this victimhood mentality among injured and non-injured veterans alike, and what we should be doing to help our veterans thrive in civilian life. Army veteran Lt. Col (Ret.) Daniel Gade lost a leg in Iraq. Politics is a tough business, and for a long time I have felt we need more leadership in Congress - specifically more veterans. And while the Presidential campaign floods the airwaves, it is the local and statewide elections this fall that will shape Congress and the political landscape. I also believe the future of our nation depends upon an informed electorate, and so much of the news and information today is influence rather than fact. We have to invest more time listening. Because we want to share the facts and let you decide, we asked Dan to step into the VeteranCrowd Spotlight. Dr. Daniel Gade is certainly tough enough to enter the political arena. He is a decorated combat veteran running to represent the Commonwealth of Virginia in the US Senate race in November. A West Point graduate, Class of 1997, he was severely wounded by an IED near Ramadi in Iraq in 2004, eventually losing his right leg. When he bled out from his wounds and exhausted the supply of blood at the field hospital, 25 Sailors and Marines with A+ blood stepped up, saving his life. “This is America at its highest and best.” he said. Refusing to let the enemy determine when he would leave the Army, he recovered and served until his retirement in 2017. Now Dan is the Republican candidate for the US Senate in Virginia seeking to unseat incumbent Democrat Mark Warner. Dan was open - we talked about national issues and Virginia. Though this is his first run, he is no stranger to Washington. We talked about the economy, education, reforming healthcare, and veterans. He is a scholar on the Constitution. We discussed free speech, gun measures, and attempts to modify or eliminate the Electoral College. And he did not shy away from the current political unrest, nor the attempts by fringe elements to hijack the message. Many thanks to Dan for stepping into the Spotlight.
