On today's episode, Dennis speaks with Inspirational Speaker, Performer and Purple Heart Recipient, J.P. Lane. J.P. joined the Army at the age of 20, In 2008. He joined the U.S. Army as a Combat Engineer and was deployed, in 2010, to Afghanistan to search for IED's (Improvised Explosive Device). He was blown up 3 separate times, and the 3rd one got him causing severe injury that almost took his life. July 2nd, 2011, J.P. was blown up by a 200lb IED while on mission, it was the first IED to penetrate an RG31 truck. The blast resulted in putting J.P. in a coma for 6 weeks. He lost both my legs, his right arm snapped in half, he lost his four front teeth, his pelvis snapped in half, spine dislocated from his pelvis, and everything in his torso was destroyed by shrapnel except for his heart and left lung. In total, J.P. received 26 injuries, and had 28 surgeries, this completely changed his life. Doctors said he wasn't going to be able to do many things, like, use prosthetics because his legs were so badly damaged. Today, J.P. gets deep into sharing his story starting from what inspired him to join the Army, the loss of his friend Justin while on mission and how that impacted his view on life, the day of his incident that led to his tragic injuries, his battle with recovery and his 12 suicide attempts, keeping faith when you're in the darkness, the book he wrote "Walking Again" and the support to handle life together. This interview is guaranteed to inspire you and brighten your day! Swim Ft. Lauderdale Masters Team (SFTL) is one of the largest and best masters swimming programs in the nation.  Esteemed Head Swim Coach Marty Hendricks gives only one award each year, "The Clyde Akbar Spirit Award".  In this interview you'll meet the man behind the award, Clyde Akbar himself.  Clyde's life reads like a page-turning novel, starting with being thrown off a cliff into the sea at age 12  as his intro to swimming. Clyde's mother was murdered when he was only 13, causing him and his 7 siblings to be scattered around the globe from their home country of Trinidad. Clyde then landed in the US and joined the US military at age 17, later receiving a Purple Heart Award for his service in Vietnam, and that's just the beginning of his story.  Swimming and Violin came later in his life after a 27 year "tough career" as a probation officer and being one of few blacks (during his tenure) to graduate from Loyola University with a degree in Criminal Justice after earning his GED in the military. Then after retiring Clyde moved to Ft. Lauderdale, learned to swim and fell in love with Masters Swimming in his sixties. He also learned violin late in life and still takes lessons with kids! You'll be inspired and entertained by this man of faith, determination and love for life- a man who, "doesn't quit (that easy)".  Be sure to stay until the end for Kelly and Maria's insightful takeaways from Clyde's interview.  Support the showThank you for listening to Champion's Mojo! Super Bowls are a time for leaders to step up. And for heroes to me made.  But they're not real heroes. They're football players. And most of them are not real heroes.  But a generation ago, there was a real hero playing in the Super Bowl.  A true legend. And that legend was established the moment he stepped back on an NFL field. And was elevated after he made it to the Super Bowl. And after he won FOUR of them.  Against all odds, he became the only purple heart recipient in history to win a Super Bowl. And the only one to win FOUR! For more than two years, he drove himself. Little by little he overcame obstacles and fought his way back. He not only made the Pittsburgh Steelers, but also eventually became a starting running back on a team that won four Super Bowls and became the greatest football team of the 20th century. The hard lessons Rocky Bleier (@RockyBleier) learned early in his life that helped him overcome adversity and reach his goals, have paid off after football. These lessons are seen between the lines in the popular book on his life, "Fighting Back" and on stages of speaking appearances around the country. Rocky Bleier is a true hero. A true champion. Not just a Super Bowl champion. But a champion for veterans. A champion for America. And, now, a champion for independents everywhere. He's leading an effort in his home state of Pennsylvania to end the ridiculous and un-American closed primaries. And continuing to inspire millions.  Welcome to a conversation with a true champion. This week's Urban Valor episode features Retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Praxedes. This Marine is a 2x Purple Heart Recipient that saw a close-quarters battle in Fallujah, Chaos in Afghanistan, and so much more. Thomas grew up in Los Angeles, CA and wanted to be a soldier until he saw a Marine in dress blues. After the September 11th attack on America, he committed to the Marine Corps. Thomas served in the second battle of Fallujah, Iraq in 2004 where he experienced up close and personal combat with the enemy during urban warfare.  He also served in Sangin, Afghanistan where his platoon would stumble across a field of buried IEDs causing trauma, chaos, and loss of life. After experiencing everything Thomas did, he put in for early retirement in order to deal with his mental health. Military mental health and veteran PTSD are major reasons Urban Valor exists. As we started this movement to bring awareness, attention, and support to mental health for military veterans. Thomas Praxedes story is action-packed from start to finish and is truly one for the books here at Urban Valor.
