Today we're talking with (Ret.) Army Lt. Colonel Jim Whaley, CEO of the veteran organization, Mission Roll Call. Every year they continually survey the veteran community with thought provoking polls about a wide variety of issues. Then apply pressure to law makers to ensure their needs are met. We begin with stories from Whaley's Army aviation days, as a combat helicopter in Germany during the height of the Cold War.From the ominous threat of Russia in the 80's to the complex terrorism threats we face today; Whaley describes how underserving generations of war fighters has profoundly negative affects our national security.Whaley also describes the top veteran issues today- suicide prevention, access to health care and post military transition … and he says there are obvious ways to solve these complex problems.Whaley discusses where the VA needs to improve, and why the suicide crisis demands our government start researching and using more alternative medical treatments, including psychedelics. And why our government needs to look beyond its past reputation.Join Mission Roll Call's movement and make your voice heard on Capitol HillSign up here:https://www.missionrollcall.org/To reach CBS Eye on Veterans, Host and Navy vet, Phil Briggsphil@connectingvets.comFollow on X@philbriggsVet@EyeOnVeteransSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

(7:03) • I was an Eagle Scout.  (8:11) • When you enlist, they give you a rank for it [Being an Eagle Scout]. (8:27) • I didn't have a positive male influence except for my scout masters and football coaches. (9:11) • There's a tangible benefit of having a group of people that come from all walks of life. You come from such diverse backgrounds, you forget all your differences and your bullshit to accomplish a mission. (10:35) • 67% of Gen-Z does not know a veteran or someone on active duty. (11:56) • That [Marine] uniform has gotten so many guys and girls. (15:05) • The majority of casualties in GWOT came from fuel convoys. (17:15) • Men and women get out, and they have to learn how to be an adult again. (25:53) • One night I spiraled down about that far away from being a suicide statistic. Another marine came and banged on my door. I was actually surprised that him banging on the door didn't jerk my finger. (28:42) • My mindset went from ”I have nothing” to “I have the opportunity to do anything.” (29:05) • 2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. (29:16) • She [Kaya) was specifically trained to recognize when I was having a nightmare and she'd jump on the bed and lick my face, wake me up, and stay with me until my heartrate went down. Or she would recognize when I was having an anxiety attack and would do animal assisted intervention, where she'd get up in my face and distract me to keep the snowball effect from getting worse. (31:38) • You may have kids, you may have a wife that love you very much, but there's something not wired right and you're going down this path, so having a dog there you look down at the dog and think “this dog loves me.” (34:42) • Our connection with dogs is a lot like our relationship with God. Jim Whaley is a former US Army Aviation Officer and CEO of Mission Roll Call. This nonprofit provides veterans with a unified voice to the nation's leaders and communities. The American public supports the military but there is a chasm between what people know and what veterans have to live through everyday.   There are 18.5 million veterans and over 1 million are homeless. Suicide and food insecurity remain rampant. The military today is falling short of recruitment targets and there is a gap between what the military needs to do and the available people actually to do it. When Service members retire from the military, they are entitled to both retirement pay from the Department of Defense and if they were injured, disability payments from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Unfortunately, due to current law, over 42,000 veterans are unable to fully collect both benefits at the same time. USMC combat vet Cole Lyle, Executive Director of Mission Roll Call is fighting to change that. Also, this week Revolutionary War soldiers, our nation's very first heroes, were honored in South Carolina. This week we welcome Cole Lyle, Executive Director of Mission Roll Call.  Prior to Mission Roll Call, Cole worked as an advisor to senior leadership at the VA and on veteran policy in the United States Senate.  As a veteran and advocate, Cole uses his experience in both fields to highlight the voices of 1.4 million members in MRC's network to advocate for veteran's issues across the United States.  Cole is uniquely positioned to lead MRC as he knows personally the struggles of military members and veterans.  From fighting on the ground in Afghanistan to battling PTSD, and then helping write the PAWs Act after his life was changed thanks to his service dog, Kaya - Cole knows the ups and downs of veteran life.  Traditional advocacy groups require veterans to voice their opinions through layers of bureaucracy at their local, state, and national levels, where veterans lose their voice.  Using modern technology, Mission Roll Call hears the unfiltered voice of veterans across America and tells their collective story directly to lawmakers and interest groups.  Roughly half of veterans are unaffiliated with the VA or any veteran service organization.  Mission Roll Call is the first of its kind: a movement that gives every veteran a voice on the issues that are most important to them.  It is a community where veterans and their families share stories, voice concerns, and present solutions for their benefit.  So if you are ready to have your voice heard from Main Street to Washington...this is the episode for you.For more information about Mission Roll Call go to https://www.missionrollcall.org.This week's highlighted veteran owned business is Thigh Huggers.  If you believe in great thighs then show yours off in the industries best "Ranger Panties".  So many designs to choose from you just have to head over to thighhuggers.com to see which pair of short shorts fits your personality!Support the show and get your Bulletproof Veteran apparel at https://amzn.to/3BA3dx9 or see all the available shirts at http://bulletproofveteran.com/apparel.

Cole Lyle held a gun in his hand, ready to take his own life, when a friend knocked on his door. “I'll be honest with you, in my opinion it is divine intervention because my finger was literally on the trigger,” Lyle, a Marine veteran, says. After six years in the military, Lyle was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. He had tried medication and was going to therapy, but none of it worked, he recalls. That's when he began exploring the option of getting a service dog.Lyle spent $10,000 of his own money on Kaya, a loving German shepherd, because the Department of Veterans Affairs didn't provide funds for acquiring service dogs. Kaya brought needed purpose back to his life, Lyle says, so he became an advocate of veterans getting access to service dogs. Today, Lyle is executive director of Mission Roll Call, a nonprofit that brings the needs of veterans directly to members of Congress. Lyle joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share his personal story and to explain how all Americans can help veterans who are struggling after their service to America. Cole Lyle, a Marine veteran who served in Afghanistan, once put a revolver to his head intending to kill himself. The depression and anxiety of post-traumatic stress had taken its emotional toll. He saw no other way out. But for some reason instead he put down the gun and took up a Bible, locked himself in a room telling himself he wouldn't come out until God's Word helped him figure out what his life was for. Mission Roll Call is the result of that crisis of faith. On this "On the Road" edition of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Lyle talks about how he created Mission Roll Call to help other veterans like himself. One of the top priorities is suicide prevention. Veterans are at much higher risk than the rest of the population. Another priority is helping vets get access to healthcare. Helping Lyle in that quest is a beautiful German Shepherd named Kaia, a specially trained service animal that senses his moods, bringing him back from the brink of an emotional episode like a post-traumatic nightmare. Lyle says, there's a long waiting list for animals like Kaia, so the two lobby the halls of congress to get lawmakers attention to the needs of the men and women who put their lives on the line for the sake of Freedom. Garrett Cathcart - Mission Roll Call, Giving Every Veteran a Voice Garrett's military career started as a student at West Point. After graduation he served until 2012 in the United States Army. He spent time in both the Iraq and Afghan wars and ended his time as a Cavalry Troop Commander. There are many lessons he took from his time in service but his greatest lesson was how to take care of people. Upon separating from the Army, Garrett wasn't sure where to land. After a stint with a medical device company he knew he needed to find purpose in his work. It was this drive that led him to get plugged into veteran organizations. He has for worked for Vetlanta, Bunker Labs, Team Red, White and Blue and now Mission Roll Call. The idea of Mission Roll Call came from a conversation around a campfire in Montana. Mission Roll Call: Mission Roll Call was born out of the realization that almost half of all veterans are unaffiliated with the Department of Veterans Affairs or any veteran service organization. They give all veterans a voice on issues impacting their lives. "This unified voice is getting the attention of our nation's leaders and communities so change can happen." “A community where veterans, their spouses, families, and caregivers can share their stories, concerns, hopes, wins, and voice their issues."
