His hobbies include getting injured doing jiu-jitsu, snowboarding, and CrossFit.A magnum opus, a tour de force—Dr. Ben Zweibelson's latest book, Reconceptualizing War, is all of these and more. I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy, and it was a rich feast. If you've ever wondered what your favourite strategist, philosopher, or school of thought had to say about warfare, you're more than likely to find them in the pages of Reconceptualizing War. From Clausewitz to Kant, Tolstoy, Engels, Mao, the Futurists, Marcuse, or Deleuze and Guattari—and several dozen more—every time I wondered if a thinker was about to appear, there they were. I especially appreciated how Reconceptualizing War complemented the aims of my Hypervelocity podcast: going deeper to examine the philosophical underpinnings of conflict. The cover art goes hard too. Our conversation delves into the themes of reconceptualising war through various philosophical and theoretical lenses. Dr. Ben Zweibelson discusses the importance of social paradigms, the historical context of anti-fascism, and the evolution of ideological movements like Antifa. The dialogue also explores the theoretical connections between Kant, Clausewitz, and contemporary armed movements, as well as the implications of game theory and the future of warfare in the age of artificial intelligence.Chapters00:00 – Introduction to Reconceptualizing War02:44 – Theoretical Foundations: Burrell, Morgan, and Rapoport10:48 – Kant, Clausewitz, and Contemporary Movements17:01 – Antifa: Historical Context and Modern Implications26:03 – Understanding War: Paradigms and Frameworks37:48 – Radical Structuralism and Omnism in Warfare47:49 – The Marxist Vision of Utopia50:15 – The Enduring Nature of War52:04 – Game Theory and Warfare57:57 – Complexity Science and the Afghan Conflict01:06:28 – Radical Structuralism and Revolutionary Success01:14:56 – Détente and Radical Structuralism01:21:47 – Interpretivism and the Limitations of DiagramsAll comments and opinions are those of the individuals recorded; they do not reflect any official policy or position of the Department of Defense or U.S. government.

//The Wire//2200Z December 3, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: MARTIAL LAW DECLARED IN SOUTH KOREA, PRESIDENT DEPLOYS MILITARY THROUGHOUT SEOUL BEFORE PARLIAMENT NULLIFIES ORDER. SYRIAN REBEL FORCES CAPTURE ALEPPO, PIVOT SOUTH TOWARD HAMA.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Syria: Opposition forces have completely taken the city of Aleppo, which largely remains under the control of opposition forces comprising of HTS, ISIS, and various other smaller al-Qaeda splinter groups. Syrian governmental forces largely have offered little resistance to the advance, which has continued to push south toward Hama. Fighting has now reached the suburbs of Hama, where the Syrian Army and Russia have mounted varying levels of defense.Korean Peninsula: This morning President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law throughout South Korea and immediately ordered the suspension of Parliament and the deployment of military forces in Seoul. Immediately following this declaration, many events occurred in very short order. As military forces surrounded Parliament and entered the building with the goal of shutting down proceedings, legislators called an Emergency Session to conduct a snap vote to nullify the martial law declaration. While Members of Parliament were climbing over barricades and using other means to gain access to the main voting hall of the National Assembly Building, soldiers encircled the building, with a large complement of military and police taking up position at the main entrance on the south side of the building. A detachment of unidentified soldiers (likely a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) from the RoK Army Special Warfare Command) were observed breaching the exterior windows of the Assembly Building to gain entry as at least 3x UH-60 helicopters established an aerial presence over the structure (possibly intending to conduct an Air Assault to fast-rope soldiers onto the roof of the building, but more likely to provide transportation for other QRF elements that deployed to the Assembly complex). As armed soldiers were in the hallway outside the main chamber attempting to break through and/or bypass the barricades hastily constructed by Parliamentary staffers, the vote to nullify the martial law order passed unanimously, with 190 Members of Parliament who were able to vote supporting the reversal of the martial law declaration. Zero MPs voted to continue the state of martial law. Following the vote, the Speaker was able to convince the soldiers to depart from the building. A few minutes after the vote, military forces began withdrawing from the interior of the National Assembly Building, with most forces remaining in the vicinity while the details of command were being worked out.Per South Korean law, the vote to nullify the state of marital law does not actually do so in practice, President Yoon is still required to issue the stand-down order himself. The vote in Parliament merely forces the President to issue the recension order. Consequently, Parliament announced that they will not leave the building until the order is rescinded by Yoon. Though the initial confrontations have simmered down, President Yoon has not been seen or heard from since the order was issued around midnight, and military spokesmen have indicated that they will not fully stand down without the order from Yoon himself. A few moments ago, rumors indicated that Yoon may issue the order to withdraw tomorrow. However, several hours after the initial scuffle at the National Assembly Building, some reports suggested that military forces had indeed decided to follow their original orders as issued by President Yoon, which included arresting the leaders of Yoon's opposition movement in Parliament: Lee Jae-myung, Han Dong-hoon, and Woo Won-sik. Earlier in the day, Lee Jae-myung had filmed himself stating that President Yoon was no longer President due to his actions. At the moment it is not clear
Air Cavalry was a new tactic employed during the Vietnam War. Jack List participated in those early days of air assault, including seeing action in the Ia Drang Valley, made famous in the movie “We Were Soldiers”. Jack served 30 years, 11 months and 25 days in the Army, retiring at the rank of Command Sergeant Major. Jack was born in Germany and his father served in the German Army during World War II. During his first tour in Vietnam he was notified by his grandmother that he had been drafted into the German Army! Jack was assigned to the 11th Air Assault “Test” Division that was evaluating the Air Assault concept. Jack would eventually serve as a Crew Chief with the newly minted 1st Air Cavalry. He became responsible for a UH-1 “Huey”. Jack flew as a door gunner on missions and then had to patch up the aircraft upon return to base. The 1st Air Cavalry was based at Camp Radcliff, An Khe'. At the time it was the largest helicopter base in the world with more than 400 helicopters. On his first mission they launched 110 helicopters to support a Special Forces camp. “The thing that scared me the most was not the enemy shooting at us, it was potential for midair collisions.” The scenes at LZ X-Ray depicted in “We Were Soldiers” were just a small part of the larger Pleiku campaign. At LZ-Albany, further north in the Ia Drang valley, our troops suffered a 50% casualty rate. Jack described one of his missions where 5 of the 10 persons on board were wounded upon approach to the landing zone. He says he has no idea how he completed two tours without being wounded himself. His pilot trained other crew members so they would know the basics in case they had to fly the helicopter. Jack says that Sergeant Major Basil Plumley was an excellent leader and always had his troops well squared away. Col. Hal Moore went back into both LZ X-Ray and LZ Albany to retrieve remains.

The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the forty-sixth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by LTC Mason Thornal, the Battalion Commander of 1-509th IN (OPFOR) on behalf of the Commander of Operations Group. Today's guest is the Brigade Commander for 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), COL James Stultz. The 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), which was activated on 1 July 1941 at Ft. Benning (now Ft. Moore), GA. The IBCT draws its infantry battalions primarily from the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment. They have the Hollywood call-sign of “Strike,” but commonly called “Five oh Duece,” and the motto of “Strike.” (The rest of the motto is “I fight where I am told, and win where I fight.”) They are easily identified by the black heart patches on their helmets dating back to preparation for the invasion of France in World War II and have been known by the enemy as the “Black Hearts Brigade.” In this episode we discuss how leaders should prepare for large scale combat operations from an air assault perspective. Specifically, we discuss how the brigade with division assets was able to conduct the first large-scale, long-range air assault for nearly thirty years. Strike was able to lift an entire infantry battalion and various enablers simultaneously. The air assault task force then flew over seven hundred miles, utilizing several forward arming and refueling points (FARPs) before arriving at their area of operation. Additionally, we look at how commanders and their staffs build training plans, standard operating procedures, and conduct countless rehearsals, staff exercises, and various field problems in preparation for conducting effective air assaults under combat conditions. Part of S02 “If I Would Have Only Known” series. Ian Inman's story is one of triumph over adversity, a testament to the human spirit and the power of faith. Growing up, Ian faced significant challenges as he struggled to escape the destructive influence of an alcoholic mother. In search of a way out, he dropped out of high school his junior year, a decision that would shape his life in unexpected ways. For three years, Ian gave himself over to a life of partying, drinking, and drugs. A path that ultimately led him to burn out and to reassess his priorities. Determined to turn his life around, he made the difficult decision to go back to school and earn his high school diploma at the age of 20. Soon after, he joined the US Army, where he discovered a passion for excellence and a drive to succeed as a way to make up for the life he previously lived. Over the course of his military career, Ian distinguished himself as a warrior and a leader, winning five Best Warrior Competitions and two Special Forces Commando Competitions. He completed the coveted US Army Airborne and Air Assault Schools, and deployed across Africa, Afghanistan, and Europe, supporting missions across the globe. His accomplishments earned him a reputation as one of the most talented and capable soldiers in his unit, and his dedication to service and excellence inspired those who served alongside him. He did all of this all while battling a divorce, suicide, and renouncing his faith to become agnostic. Shortly after conquering his military career, Ian embarked on a new journey as an entrepreneur, founding a marketing agency that nearly allowed him to buy out of his military contract. However, his desire for fame and power led him down a path of self-destruction, and he lost everything he had worked for. Now he was on the verge of medical separation after 10 years of service for deployment related injuries. Without a backup plan and a second divorce on the way, he spent 2 straight years not being able to drive, in the hospital weekly, not being able to be exposed to the environment, and fighting a brutal health battle which almost claimed his life on multiple occasions. It wasn't until Ian reclaimed a genuine relationship with Jesus again that he was able to turn his life around and begin a new journey of helping others. Today, he is a renowned speaker, author, business developer, coach and investor, whose principles of revenue generation and sustainable growth are built to withstand the test of time. He draws upon his own experiences to provide a roadmap for others looking to find success in their entrepreneurial journey. Ian's transformational journey is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of faith. Guided by his passion for excellence and his unwavering commitment to Christian values, Ian is driven to create a legacy of impact and success, one that will inspire and uplift generations to come. 5x Best Warrior Competition Winner 2x Special Forces Commando Competition Winner Airborne, Air Assault, SERE, SEMA, Recruiter, & Geospatial Intelligence Staff Sergeant Deployed across Africa & Afghanistan while also supporting missions in North America, South America, and Europe Special Operations Enabler for 2/10th Special Forces Group and Non-Rated Crew Member for the 204th Military Intelligence (Aerial Reconnaissance) Battalion Top 20 US Army Recruiter out of 15k+ people and top 10 Army Recruiting Station out of 3,500+ in the U.S.A. @theianinman @OperationLifeHQ | Instagram, TikTok | Linktree

Robin and I have known each other for years. I met her a few years back as she was initially transitioning out of the Army. At that time, Robin was just starting her comedy career, but it was clear in just those first few times meeting her, she had a gift for making others laugh and was going to go so far. She's now not only showing the world what a successful post-military transition can be, but she is using this skill to demonstrate how laughter can help us in our darkest periods. And she is an Ohio State buckeye like me! In 1994, Robin enlisted in the Ohio National Guard and served as a 92Y Unit Supply Specialist. She was later commissioned through THE Ohio State University ROTC program as a Quartermaster Officer. Robin's career highlights include five deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, Company Commander, A Co, 603rd ASB, 3d Combat Aviation Brigade, 3d Infantry Division; Support Operations Officer, 3d Cavalry Regiment; Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Battalion Commander, 526th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division; and Employment Director, Soldier For Life. Her awards and decorations include the Airborne, Air Assault, and Pathfinder badges, three Bronze stars, and the Defense Meritorious Service medal. Robin's new mission is to heal people, organizations, and communities through humor. She created Best Medicine Brigade to give veteran and military spouse comedians performance opportunities and heal people with humor. Robin's passion is the applied and therapeutic use of humor for mental health which is why she also facilitates HEAL*ARIOUS, a humor therapy program for veterans. She is a Level 2 Certified Humor Professional with the Association For Applied and Therapeutic Humor and a comedy boot camp instructor for Armed Services Arts Partnership. She has been featured on USA Today, ABC, and Fox. Voted as Charleston's Best Comic of 2022, Robin is currently on tour and has performed at Carolines on Broadway, Atlanta Comedy Theater, Charlotte Comedy Zone, Bricktown Comedy Club, Louisville Comedy Club, and for corporate audiences all over the country. Cartoon Artist David Gorden talks about art and creativity through the eyes and the mind of a cartoonist. David is a creator, writer, and sequential artist who specializes in the creation of intellectual properties. Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, he fell in love with art, particularly visual storytelling, at a young age. He began making his own comic strips and submitting them to the Post-Dispatch, at the age of 8. The Post very graciously turned David down; with the editor at the time sending him a rejection letter that encouraged him to continue to pursue his dream of becoming a cartoonist. David went on to become a professional graphic artist and cartoonist and was a founding member of legendary St. Louis art crews Air Assault and later Mach One. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/koolkard/support
