This tradition of warrior Stoics continued up through and past Admiral Stockdale, who would test Epictetus's doctrines in the prison camps of Vietnam (his book Courage Under Fire is a must read for any modern Stoic).Zeno, the founder of Stoicism, all but predicted this would be the fate of the Stoics. “If you lay violent hands on me,” he said in 3rd century Greece, “you'll have my body, but my mind will remain with Stilpo.” Stilpo was a Greek philosopher, meaning that you could torture Zeno, you could possess his body, but you could never control his mind. He was saying a version of what we said recently—that the idea of Stoicism is to surrender but not give yourself away.Isn't that what Stockdale was doing? He submitted to his imprisonment because it was a physical fact of his existence. He accepted, perhaps a bit more realistically than the Stoics, that under torture, no man was fully unbreakable, that you would ultimately have to give some information up under duress. (We talked to one of his fellow POWs, Dave Carey, on the podcast about just this idea.) But Stockdale still asserted that he had ultimate control of his thoughts, of his character, his sense of self. By staying attuned to the tech-savvy visitors and implementing a user-friendly system that accommodates everyone, parks can significantly enhance the overall guest experience by simply letting them forget.    Managing Pain Points "When decision-makers are sitting around the table, they are looking out for their own interests." It's too often that attractions try to force a square peg into a round hole. When it comes to addressing and managing pain points, Kristen and Dave know the significance of identifying not only the current pain points but also anticipating potential ones. This comprehensive assessment involves examining issues from various angles and perspectives, from the high levels of finance to the mindset of the frontline operator. But if pain points had easy fixes, we wouldn't have any. Kristen underscores that in order to effectively address these points, the team must immerse themselves in the situation by putting their boots on the ground and gaining a thorough understanding of the issue at hand in order to offer a viable solution.   Entitlements vs. Tickets "We're not talking about tickets. We're talking about entitlements." An entitlement is simply a ticket with great functionality. By providing guests with greater capabilities through their ticket, such as granting access to their rooms and serving as a means of payment, we can significantly enhance the overall guest experience. This added flexibility empowers guests to have more control over their day, ultimately contributing to a better experience. Additionally, by providing these services with one entitlement, it can become possible to collect more comprehensive data. Dave Carey, Executive Director of Redberry Bible Camp, teaches from Hebrews 12:1-2.

Dave Carey was born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, in 1942. He entered the U.S. Naval Academy in June 1960, and was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy on June 4, 1964. Carey next attended flight training at NAS Pensacola, Florida, and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1966. After completing A-4 Skyhawk Replacement Air Group training he served as an A-4 pilot with VA-163 at NAS Lemoore, California, and deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany (CVA-34) from 1966 until he was forced to eject over North Vietnam and was taken as a Prisoner of War on August 31, 1967. After spending 2,022 days in captivity, LCDR Carey was released during Operation Homecoming on March 14, 1973. He then returned to flying status and served as Operations Officer, Maintenance Officer, and Safety Officer with VF-126 at NAS Miramar, California, from 1974 to 1979, followed by service as Commanding Officer of Fleet Composite Squadron 7 from 1979 to 1981. His next assignment was as Commanding Officer of VF-126 at NAS Miramar from July 1982 to 1984, and then as Commanding Officer of the Naval Amphibious School, Director of the Navy's Leadership and Management Effectiveness Program, and Lead Facilitator in the Leadership and Management Seminar for Prospective Commanding and Executive Officers at Coronado, California, from 1984 until his retirement from the Navy on January 1, 1986. Since his retirement from the Navy, Dave has been a professional speaker, consultant, and trainer. He is the author of the book "The Ways We Choose, Lessons for Life from a POW's Experience".
