A discussion with invited guests about their personal relationships with automotive nostalgia. Despite the title, it doesn't even matter if the topic of discussion is their Dad's car or not. It could be their Mums, their Grans, parents, guardians or even a neighbours. If it made an impression, we want to talk about it.Season 1 - February - May 2023Season 2 - July - November 2023Hosted by Andy Gregory and Jon Recknell. Want to be a guest? Send us a textWe know you enjoyed the episode with Jonny Smith... so here's a little conversation we kept back for you to enjoy all about lawn mowers and car washing.Jonny's first job was mowing lawns for neighbours, and as it happens, that is what Jon does for a day job too. Send us a textOur latest guest is the one and only Robbie Knox! If you're familiar with @meggarobbie you probably first saw him on cult football morning show Soccer AM, but if you missed the 90s/00s he can now be found trading as an influencer extraordinaire.Robbie was kind enough to spare us an hour or so as we attempted to pick his brains on all things cars and car nostalgia. Naturally this did veer away from cars rather a lot, including why Butlins is like Center Parcs without the trees. Circus marketing campaigns. Send us a textA first for our podcast, an intergenerational episode, as we welcome Elliot Mitchell, who came to us after hearing his Dad on Season 2 Episode 8.We had a great time on that one, and remained in contact with the family afterwards as Rob is a personal friend, so it made sense to hear what his eldest son had to say about his memories of cars growing up. Some lovely tales of Grandparents, travelling to and from his Dad's after growing up living with his Mum - something Andy can relate closely too. We hope you enjoy this one, and please do go and check out Rob's episode (S2E8) it's one of our most listened too!Support the showWe'd love you to hear and share your stories, please tag and follow us on social media. www.instagram.com/mydadscar_podcastwww.Facebook.com/mydadscar podcastwww.buymeacoffee.com/mydadscarIf you'd like to support the podcast and are able to, you can ‘buy us a coffee' which will help towards costs of hosting and purchasing equipment to allow us to record guests in person, rather than just on zoom. Send us a textIt was a real pleasure to have Motoring Journalist, TV and You Tuber Jonny Smith join us for a full fat chat about cars of yesteryear. His story starts with a couple of British classics. A Harvest Gold Austin Allegro belonging to his Grandparents, and a Hillman Avenger that his parents owned from 1979 to the late nineties, perhaps even beyond the millennium! We take in an Austin Maxi with a ‘drink driver facelift' which his Dad repaired overnight with piano wire, ready for work the next day. There's a Vauxhall Carlton, an honourable mention for the Mk2 Vauxhall Cavalier Estate (apparently built in Australia by Holden). We also speak about a white Austin Rover Montego estate, why used car dealers have bunting, and more puzzlingly always leave the boot of a car open, when on display. We finish things up with a chat about gifting books to schools, and incentivising car manufacturers painting their cars bright colours rather than ‘soviet grey' or appliance white. It goes without saying we recommend you take a listen to the wonderful Smith and Sniff Podcast, and check out The Late Brake Show on You Tube. https://smithandsniff.com/https://www.youtube.com/@TheLateBrakeShowSupport the showWe'd love you to hear and share your stories, please tag and follow us on social media. www.instagram.com/mydadscar_podcastwww.Facebook.com/mydadscar podcastwww.buymeacoffee.com/mydadscarIf you'd like to support the podcast and are able to, you can ‘buy us a coffee' which will help towards costs of hosting and purchasing equipment to allow us to record guests in person, rather than just on zoom. Send us a textWe're joined by Stuart Weaver for today's episode.Recommended to us by previous guest, Jamie Orr's mum no less, Stuart is a survivor of male breast cancer, and met Sally Orr through her work in this field. Stuart's parents have had their fair share of MG's - and some of them are still in the family now.His Dad beat Adam Faith to a red MGA, and was due to use it as Stuart's wedding car. However, a ladder fell on it the night before, and it's never really be used since. His Mum used to drive him around in a Fiat 500, but has had a couple of MG BGT's and currently there's a blue one on his parents drive awaiting re-commissioning. We also touch on Stuart's history with breast cancer, and we urge you to take 2 minutes to check yourselves over, and report any suspicious lumps or discharges to your Doctor ASAP. We should add, we're publishing this on April 15th, which by sheer fluke is Stuart's Dads birthday!! We hope you enjoy this episode! Send us a textRecently whilst clearing out my loft, I've found lots of old car books from when i was a kid. Rather than take them to a charity shop, for another 40-something guy to buy for a quid and stash in his study, i chose to give them to my kids school, in the hope they might just inspire the next generation. So, if you've got any old car books at home, please do the same - these kids (and our hobby) need your help. Send us a textIt's a pleasure to bring you this episode with Ed Foster, a farmer, a motoring journalist, a racer, and perhaps most familiar to you as the (tall) face and voice in the Goodwood Paddocks during the Revival, Festival of Speed and Members Meeting. He grew up on a Farm in Scotland, although boarded at a school in London. His Dad was into racing, and owned the last ever E-Type lightweight, along with an XK120 racecar, a Ford Maverick (with a Joseph tape stuck on repeat) and his Mum daily drove a Ford Escort Cosworth. This is a chat full of horsepower and petrol! Strap and in hold on there's lots to be discussed... Including an F40 that came to his school on a parents visiting day, and his Dad driving a Land Rover twice around Australia.... which has now returned to the family farm! Send us a textWe welcome Tom McCooey, a journalist and author onto our podcast to chat about his parents cars, and in particular an MG Magnette called Maggie. The car had previously last been used in 1983 and was his parent's wedding car. After his father passed away in 2016, his mother offered him the car and he set about restoring it.Financially it should never have been saved, but the vehicle lives, and was the basis for a book which is now available to buy.Maggie – A Lifelong MG Love Affair - Scratching Shed PublishingBeyond this car we chat about a Mk2 Fiesta with no rear seat belts, mini disc players and ipods, a Montego Estate with the 'vomit seats' a pair of aging BMWS which sounded posh, but Tom assures us really weren't.These were later replaced by the Zafira, and then a Vauxhall Agila, which he learnt to drive in.In this episode we also discuss how Tom's father passed away, likewise what led to Andy's Dad and Jon's Dad's checking out early, and what we would have done given the opportunity to take on our Father's cars.Hope you enjoy this one. Send us a textWe're joined by Faye Hatton, an Automotive PR specialist who just so happened to answer a social media post by Jonny Smith with a memory of her parents cars.Naturally, we hijacked that post and got in touch, and shortly afterward had this chat. Faye's earliest memories are of the cars she used to walk past on her way to and from school. Not a long walk, 300 yards, as she lives next door! But she would test herself on recognising headlamps and badges from a distance. The first car she recalls her parents driving was a silver Sierra hatchback. They never had ‘posh' cars when she was growing up, and unusually due her Dads working schedule, most journeys were made with her Mum at the wheel. Send us a textIn the second of our full length live podcasts recorded at the NEC Classic Car Show we were joined by Phil Weeden, the MD of Kelsey Media and Classics World. We have a great chat about his earliest car memories, what got him into the industry, his time editing Car Mechanics magazine, before taking the helm in charge of all Motoring titles at Kelsey Media. From his first memory sat on his father's lap, driving his Talbot (not Chrysler) Avenger around a car park, whilst waiting to pick his Nan up from work to a Ford Escort (with roof rack) which his Father could have died in…Having had a crash just 3 weeks after the seat belt laws came into place… and the seatbelt undoubtedly saved his life. Send us a textWe're joined by Andy's friend Martin Hackett who has plenty of great stories to share. His earliest car memory is a Ford Granada belonging to his Grandfather, who used to drive down from Scotland to see him on the South Coast, then take him back again to spend the school holidays. His Mum drove a peppermint green Mk1 Fiesta Sport, and was a bit of a girl racer. His Dad has Nissan Stanza's and Bluebirds, and van he used for work.Later on his Mum bought a brand new Yugo 45, and then a VW Golf Mk2 which Martin had a bit of an incident with involving a garage! Later on, as a bit of a bonus Martin discloses how he and some school friends had shares in a car when they were 14 or 15, and they would drive it to nightclubs, and they even got jump started by the Police one night when it failed to start!!Martin runs a number of businesses which may be of interest to you.Paint protection specialists - Paint Protection Film & Ceramic Coating Services in West SussexCeramic Coating - WAX IS DEAD® - Professional One Layer Ceramic Coatingsand lighting supplier - Hexagon Lighting Systems - Hexi-Grid LED Lighting - UK CompanySupport the showWe'd love you to hear and share your stories, please tag and follow us on social media. www.instagram.com/mydadscar_podcastwww.Facebook.com/mydadscar podcastwww.buymeacoffee.com/mydadscarIf you'd like to support the podcast and are able to, you can ‘buy us a coffee' which will help towards costs of hosting and purchasing equipment to allow us to record guests in person, rather than just on zoom. This episode was recorded in front of a live audience in the Podcast Lounge at the Classic Car Show at the NEC in November 2024.Our guest, Anna Bebbington is the events organiser for the VW Golf Mk1 Owners Club, and told us some brilliant motoring tales from her childhood. From a 3 wheeled van, a Reliant Robin, through to a Mk1 Golf, a Mk2 Golf GTI and several Volkswagen campervans, it is a tale inspired and influenced by her Grandfather.Even when Anna could drive, the first person she would show a new car to, would be her Grandfather. We hope you enjoy this one as much, if not more than the last. We are joined this week by Ian Robertson, an enthusiast of Peugeot 405s, and publisher of Classic Retro Modern car magazine, an independent title that celebrates many of the same cars we discuss in each of our shows.Join us for a journey through Simca's, Talbots, Peugeot 405's, a history lesson on the loveable (but not strictly) Peugeot 309, and Ford Sierra. His Dad would do up to 50,000 miles a year, so was changing cars every 3 months at times, in order to keep the resale value in them. We explore Ford's ability to divide popular opinion with the Sierra, but also with the Focus and the KA later on. Ian is a collector of dealer brochures and model launch literature, so naturally we chat about that. We are joined by Sam White, co-Founder of Apiar Watches, and Porsche 911 owner. In fact this episode is pretty 911 centric, as his father bought the yellow 1971 Targa model the week Sam was born, and always promised the car to him when he was old enough. True to his word, the classic coupe is now in his ownership, complete with its uber-rare 6 pipe exhaust system, which is somewhat of an internet sensation!! Welcome back to season 5 of My Dad's Car! We are joined by Paul Gardner from SpeedBroker who found us through our popular social media game 'Car Spotting Tennis' in which we trade interesting vehicle spots with a racquet sports twist. It was a black Citroen BX that Jon spotted that used to belong to Paul's Dad.He had a run of mundane cars Paul recalls...Boring stuff - Toyota Corolla, Citroen BX (boring at the time), Nissan Primera, Almera, Mum's Mini, Morris Minor the list goes on...Along with the rebellion from his parents bade taste was his Uncle's taste in motor vehicles that lit the spark, firstly a pair of matching Tornado Red Mk2 Golf GTI's, then his Mk3 Cavalier GSI 'was the fastest car in the world' when he was a kid! Join us for a great chat with Sheridan from We Blog Any Car for a trip down memory lane. It starts with his Dad's Vauxhall Viva in bright metallic green (with the obligatory vinyl roof), and in juxtaposition, his colleagues and customers Audi 100s with their 5 cylinder engines. His Dad didn't drive fast (whilst listening to country music or Boney-M on his Pioneer radio cassette with electric aerial) but he was fond of a wheelspin in the wet, and once tried to race a Mazda RX7... After the Viva came a brown Mk2 Cavalier saloon, which he later 'facelifted' with parts from work. A bit like the 'One bit at a time' song by Jonny Cash. Much to our joy, the Citroen BX comes up in discussion, belonging to a teacher at school. Likewise a Mk1 Golf GTI with which the keys were trusted to Sheridan to go and retrieve things by his teacher, should any school stuff be left inside during lessons. Talk then changes to suggestions for classic cars and investment cars of the future. The Mk1 Audi TT is Andy's choice, Sheridan albeit with bias is backing the Alfa GTV and Spyder of the late nineties. We discuss what cars need to have or not have to make the cut, and we feel part of this is a lack of availability, perhaps having fallen out of favour or been a bit rubbish when first available. The MG ZR or the Proton Satria GTI might just make the mark. We hope you enjoy this episode (one of our longest to date) and if you do, please consider supporting us by buying a coffee or donating on a monthly basis. Please follow Sheridan here: We Blog Any Car – Car Blog & Car NewsWe Blog Any Car - YouTube We Blog Any Car (@webloganycar) • Instagram photos and videosSupport the Show. We'd love you to hear and share your stories, please tag and follow us on social media. www.instagram.com/mydadscar_podcastwww.Facebook.com/mydadscar podcastwww.buymeacoffee.com/mydadscarIf you'd like to support the podcast and are able to, you can ‘buy us a coffee' which will help towards costs of hosting and purchasing equipment to allow us to record guests in person, rather than just on zoom. We're joined for this episode by Andy's cousin Sally Alington. By day she is the Founder and CEO of Ethos Farm and high flying business woman, at the weekends she loves going for a drive in her Ford Mustang... A car that was not at all influenced by her parents choices, except perhaps for the fact they named her Sally!Expect stories of matresses in the back of Mini vans, a Citroen 2CV with a roll back roof (which Sally and her brother Luke would stand up and look out through). There's talk of a carpet cleaning business (hence the mini Van) and Sally's Mum Angela gets lots of airtime, having previously worked as a London Taxi Driver. Her Nan is also a key part to this episode, choosing to leave her keys in her car so she wouldn't lose them in the house - in fact leaving them in the ignition, but hiding them behind a winter glove! Lastly we finish on tales of holiday hire cars, a free Porsche wedding car and a Business Class day trip to New York with her Dad for her 13th birthday. We hope you enjoy this one, and please leave us a review if you do. Later on, he moved down south and was taught to drive at the legendary TRL (home of GTI International). His Dad used to restore motorbikes in a high rise flat, had a manual lathe from a submarine, and bought a Lotus Elise as his company car! But both of his parents are petrol heads - now driving a VW Beetle and Mk4 Golf with BBS alloys! We touch on the DVLA in Swansea, how this may have been a 'gift' from the Government in lieu of closing the coal mines. In fact the DVLA was formed in Swansea in 1965 and the mines closed in the 1980's but it was a nice theory! We also speak about how Jamie got into VWs (his grandparents Scirocco Storm may have been a slight influence) but he bought his first when he moved to the USA. We hope you enjoy these tales and many more in this great episode. Yep! You read that right, we will be appearing in the all new Podcast Lounge on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th November at the NEC Classic Motor Show.(Yes, this should have been a full episode this week, but this news needed to be shared!)We were over the moon to be asked to take part and we have been named alongside Auto Alex and Driven as podcasts which will be appearing in the recent press release sent out by the organisers.'To say we're excited is an understatement - we had a great time at this venue earlier in the year when we recorded a fabulous bonus episode, so the chance to do that, and also appear in front of an audience doing what we do is simply wonderful!Stay tuned - we've been promised a discount code for tickets, and potentially even a pair to give away to one lucky listener! We are joined this week by Max Newman, a die hard car enthusiast and one third of the 9Werks Podcast team. Max tells us about Citroen Dyanes, White Mk1 Golf L which his Mum got a speeding ticket in, Mk2 Golf GTI's driving to get the Michael Jackson Bad album, Phil Collins No Jacket Required and Philip Bailey Chinese Wall on casette. There's plenty of kit car chat from Sylva Leaders to a Ginetta G33 - the very first in fact, a bright yellow machine which was test driven by CAR magazine, and his father later took to Isle of Man with him to watch the TT. There are Austin 7 specials sat in an Apple loft in Norfolk and an Audi S2 that Max wishes he'd saved from his Fathers neglect after the keys got lost. It's another belter, and we really hope you enjoy it. It also marks 50 episodes since we began recording My Dad's Car. Andy and Jon. The first time we have done a full in person podcast, and it wasn't without its troubles... However, Danny James was a great guest, very accommodating in his workshop at home, and across two takes we managed to get all the audio and most of the video. Yep! There's an actual video of this conversation.. Check it out here. https://youtu.be/zMJByStJ_OcExpect stories about a purple Ford Capri, with 4 kids in the back. Teddy Boy Fords, Land Rovers and buying brand new cars at midnight so you could have the latest registration letter in the morning. A great chat, and one we are most grateful for having. We'd initially said we would do this back when we started, but Danny sadly lost his Dad, and we felt it best for him to take some time to get his thoughts in order first. We're joined by Matt Godfrey, an artist who works under the 'Drawn by Matt' alias. We chat about old Fords, Metros, the embarrassment of his childhood friends seeing the cars his parents had, as he lived next to the school! We discuss the NEC Classic Car show, Goodwood Revival, and inadvertently start planning our own 'fancy dress' classic car event aimed at the slightly lower end of the market. It's a great chat, and we hope you enjoy it too. Join us for a quick chat about Car Spotting Etiquette. With the response to our Car Spotting Tennis is shows no signs of slowing up, so we'll continue for now - but there are some rules we have put in place. The cars need to be in a public place, either a car park or on the road. If the car is parked on a drive, or behind a block of flats, then it doesn't count...It comes down to how you would feel if someone was snooping around your stuff really, and I do value a bit of privacy. I don't mind if someone photographs my car, but keep my house and my family out of it! So, there you go... We're joined by Jay from Players Classic, Players Shows, Flat 6 Show, Hoonigan and star of many PVW magazine features for this fantastic episode. Come with us, back in time to when Skoda's were seriously uncool - His Dad had many of them! Fortunately in Jay's words, he knew how to take care of himself, otherwise it would have been a very unpleasant time at school. Jay's Dad also had a Rover P6 with the number plate 999 BAN - and he was a Police Officer!! Other stories in this episode include his Aunt Mick's Ford Fiesta Supersport and she was arguably responsible for getting Jay into cars. The Fiesta later got part exchanged for a Honda Civic, which eventually ended up with Jay after she passed away - and he ran that car into the ground. This week we're joined by Dave Carey from Adelaide in Australia!Yep! The good work we have been doing has trickled down under, and we're gathering some momentum, which attracted motoring journalist and petrol head Dave to get in touch with us. Dave's father passed away when he was just over 5 years old, but he still has some strong memories of his car, he also recalls his Mums car, and their matching number plates.Conversation also covers an ex partner of his Mum's who robbed a service station to fund his motorsport season, and a kid at his school who's parents owned one of only a handful of Brock Directors. We may be more used to home grown saloons than Holden Utes, but this conversation proved that these memories and good story telling will survive, even if told from another continent. Thanks again Dave for coming on - our first truly international guest, dialing in from overseas. Enjoy!Andy and JonSupport the Show. The first episode of Season 4 really sets the bar high (but panic not, we've got some great guests waiting in the wings too), Steve Waddingham is the official company historian for none other than Aston Martin Lagonda, but when he's not researching old colour names, and digging out race cars from dusty barns, he's behind the wheel of his own Austin Allegro! Yep... you read that right! We talk about his Father's Austin Cambridge, him working at his Dad's garage fixing cars. His Grandad who was a chauffeur, but typically drove a Morris Minor not a Daimler like everyone else - at the request of his employer! Think you're gonna love this one! Jon and Andy went wild in the halls of the NEC with the newly acquired podcasting machine (thanks coffee buyers..) gathering together a wonderful and eclectic collection of earliest car memories from many different show goers. Jon and Andy are joined by Russell Quirk who recalls countless tales of his Dad's cars.He reckons his Dad swapped cars every 6 months, and we're not just talking old Ford Escorts (although he had an RS2000) we're talking E-Types, Aston Martin's, Rolls Royces, TVR, Porsche and more. Russell's Dad was an Estate Agent in Essex, and liked to show off a little as to how successful he was. In later life he got into Car Dealerships, and was known as Mazda Man due to his brand allegiance. Russell's proudest tale is the story of tracking down the personalised number plate that used to be worn by his father's Aston Martin V8 Vantage, until, one day when he came home from work without it, as it had been sold... with the 4 digit plate GO 92. Many years later Russell chanced upon the plate for sale and simply had to buy it! So it now lives on one of his own cars in tribute to his late father. We hope you enjoy this one as much as all the others. A big thanks to Russell for coming on to talk with us. Jon and Andy welcome Helen Stanley to My Dad's car this week. She may be familar to some of you having graced our TV screens on Goblin Works Garage and Motor Pickers to name but a few. These day's Helen is working as an artist - check out her pop art here: helenstanleyofficial.comHelen also hosts a podcast with her cousin, called Cars of the Macabre - take a listen in all the usual places. Discussion on her own car influence starts with toys, and then builds into a love of watching James Bond with her Dad. Her Dad had a few cool cars, a Peugeot 405 Mi16 and an E36 BMW 3 series. He also owned a classic Mini back when they were just regular cars... A vehicle Helen would love to own in the future. On top of discussions about Helen's TV work, Andy also pitches the idea of Part-X, a new classifieds service aimed at bringing back the joy of the acronym and word limited for sale adverts. We were most grateful to Helen for coming on - to date probably our 'most famous' guest. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did recording it. Andy and Jon are joined by Steve Holden, a friend of Andy's whom he knows through classic VW ownership. The discussion kicks off with Steve's Mum's Datsun Cherry Coupe, before talk turns to a Morris Marina Van, and a love in for the Renault 9 - which led Steve to buy a Renualt 19 later in life.Steve's Dad surprised his mum with an Escort XR3i Cabriolet one Christmas, he'd hidden it in the garage the week before, but the marks on the grass almost gave the game away.Being a hands on Dad (having built his own house) there was a Dumper Truck in the garden that Steve learnt to drive in. His Dad would also help with mechanical repairs, lowering modifications and even a full engine swap on an aging Rover.Another great episode which really captures the magic of the subject. Add into the mix of this bonus, a discussion on the Bromley Pageant of Motoring, a Christmas day car show in London and Porsche 911 Targa that left a lasting impression with Jon's eldest half brother. Jon and Andy are joined by Takona founder Lewis Warren to discover what got him into cars... Fortunately for us, the blame lies very firmly at his Father's door, and there's a string of decent cars indicating why. However, it wasn't a car thing for his Dad really, after the 205 GTI and the Toyota Celica, cars became an accessory for work. The Audi TT was the sportiest car available on the company car scheme, and as a Financial Advisor, the vehicles became an identity, and a way to demonstrate knowledge in investment, rather than a hobby. There are some great tales, including a roadtrip to Spain in the TT with his brother, with just a Country and Western CD for entertainment... There might be a bit of travel sickness too! Takona, as Lewis explains is a clothing brand aimed at getting car enthusiasts talking, and talking about their mental health. We'd love you to look him up www.takona.co.uk or check out the Takona Tlks podcast with a string of great guests, including recently, Jonny Smith and Richard Porter aka Smith and Sniff. Andy and Jon are joined by Charles Clegg, Co-Founder and CEO of Custodian, a car management app, designed for car collectors and enthusiasts. The story begins for Charles with a pair of Bristols... (oooh eer misses). One that he miraculously identified from his pushchair, the second belonging to his Mother, which after 20 years of ownership, met a fiery end parked in Knightsbridge, causing shop evacuations and road closures. Later on discussion turns to a Ferrari, in grey, bought new by Charles father, and he would travel on a small shelf behind the front seats! As he grew, he was afforded the luxury of Range Rovers, with arm rests both in the centre and the side of the rear bench. Clearly paving the way for what Charles comically calls a 'masochistic' relationship with the classic 4x4. Naturally, there is also lots of talk around the benefits of the Custodian platform, what it can do, and excitingly we manage to discover what is in store too...Please do check it out (we're not being paid for this.. we think it is cool) In their words…"Loving your car is easy. Owning it isn't.Meet Custodian, the free platform that simplifies car ownership. Create a digital garage, protect your car's history, schedule tasks, browse a specialist car marketplace, and manage your insurance - all in one convenient place.”www.custodian.club Hopefully this is once more an episode you enjoy, and wish to share with friends, maybe even leave a review for. He's an automotive photographer by trade, and Andy's had the pleasure of his professional company (that sounds a bit sordid) on a number of photoshoots with work. Jon and Andy are joined today by Dan Rees.Dan is a friend of Andy's brother, and a jewelry designer by trade, he's also a dab hand at You Tube and Tik Tok, and a budding stand up comedian too. By his own admission, early on Dan tells us that he's the worst guest we could get on, but that doesn't stop the chat, or the laughs... Lots of silliness, stories about his brothers Mini, and later a Hearse, chasing would be car thieves with a screw driver, and his Mums Polo getting pulled out a ditch by some Rugby players! The tangent kicks in quite early as Dan recalls a run of his own cars, each with some wonderful names, many of which met their fate at the scrap yard after letting Dan down in service!Lastly we enjoy tales from Dan's time in Australia, certainly not on topic, but being a brilliant story teller we couldn't bare to cut it out the edit!
