EP305 - Christmas Planters For The Festive Season & Beyond!!

Your front door deserves more than a week of glitter. We break down how to build Christmas planters that look festive now, thrive in deep shade, and transition smoothly into spring without waste. The secret is designing for longevity: choose a strong evergreen centrepiece, layer hardy winter colour, and add seasonal touches you can lift out in January. We start with structure. Skimmia japonica tops our list for glossy leaves and vibrant buds that read instantly “Christmas” yet stay handsome for months. Holly brings classic winter mood, while taxus and box cones or balls give clean shapes that handle outdoor lights beautifully. We also explore pieris and compact conifers like junipers and cryptomeria for texture that stands up under a porch with minimal winter watering. If you want to keep them in pots, match compost to plant needs and watch moisture as days get longer. Then we build colour that lasts. Violas and pansies in deep reds and purples are cold-tolerant and cheerful well into spring. Cyclamen adds drama if you're happy to deadhead, and primroses, polyanthus, and bellis round out a soft, friendly palette. For the long game, tuck bulbs beneath the bedding; hyacinths or dwarf narcissus will push through late winter and extend the show. Prefer zero maintenance? We share a cut-greenery planter: damp compost, layered evergreens, red-stem dogwood or birch twigs, pine cones, and warm micro-lights for a lush, foam-free display you can compost after New Year.We make a strong case for skipping sprayed or painted plants. They look dated by mid-January and usually end up in the bin. Instead, use simple picks—a small robin, a subtle Santa, tiny parcels—to add Christmas notes you can remove later, revealing a timeless winter container. By repeating two or three colours, mixing glossy leaves with soft blooms, and scaling pots to your doorway, you'll get a display that feels fresh, natural, and welcoming every day.If this guide helps you rethink festive containers, follow the show, share it with a gardening friend, and leave a quick review. Got a planter you're proud of? Tag us with a photo and tell us your go-to winter centrepiece.Support the showIf there is any topic you would like covered in future episodes, please let me know. Episode 622: Compost Wins, Edible Violas, and Garlic Growing Tips

The veg grower podcast

This week on the Veg Grower Podcast I have been busy on both the allotment and in the kitchen garden. September always feels like the start of a new gardening year and with that in mind I have been preparing beds, harvesting plenty, and even picking up a bargain or two. Allotment Update: I started the week by harvesting a couple of cauliflowers and some broccoli. Timing is everything with these crops. Too soon and they are small, too late and they bolt. Thankfully these were just right and have been blanched for the freezer, made into cauliflower cheese, and enjoyed fresh. Harvesting them also freed up space in the brassica bed which will be home to garlic and overwintering onions. To prepare, I dug out some of my homemade compost and mulched the beds. It is satisfying to know that garden waste has come full circle to feed the soil for the next crops. While digging compost I also took the opportunity to tidy up the scruffy corner where the bins live. Nettles were cut back and the area generally smartened up, which gave me better access to my leaf mould bins. These will be filled with fallen leaves in October and left to break down into a useful soil conditioner. A trip to B&M also turned up an unexpected find. Trays of violas for just 20p each. After a good soak they perked up and I have planted them around the allotment and kitchen garden. Not only do they add colour but their flowers are edible too, perfect for salads or garnishes. Kitchen Garden update: At home compost has been another big theme. The hot bin continues to churn out high-quality compost and thanks to my neighbours pruning their vines I had more material to add. Chopping it up finely helps it rot down faster and makes a better end product. Looking ahead I am planning to try more polyculture planting next year in the kitchen garden. Rather than having beds for each crop, I want to mix things up with tomatoes and beetroot together or herbs tucked between vegetables. This will make the space more productive and resilient. Another highlight was pricking out thyme seedlings. The smell was fantastic and it reminded me why I want to grow more herbs. Not just for cooking, but also as companion plants. Thyme works well with brassicas as its scent confuses cabbage whites, basil helps tomatoes by repelling whitefly, and chives can deter aphids. Herbs really can bring both flavour and natural pest control. With rain finally arriving I have also been pumping water from full butts into others to make sure nothing goes to waste. My Autopot systems in the greenhouse have been a real help this year, keeping moisture levels steady and helping produce bumper crops. Recipe of the Week In the kitchen garlic was the star with a batch of homemade aioli. This is a simple garlicky mayonnaise made with garlic, egg yolks, mustard, olive oil and lemon juice. It is easy to make but full of flavour and shows just how versatile garlic is both in the ground and in the kitchen. Growing Garlic Finally, a few tips on growing garlic. I aim to plant mine around the 20th of September, which is also my wedding anniversary so I never forget. Garlic likes well-prepared, free-draining soil. I plant cloves 10cm deep and 10cm apart, pointy end up, and water well. Planting in September means the bulbs get the cold spell they need to split properly and by June they will be ready to harvest. Garlic is one of the easiest and most rewarding crops to grow and one I always look forward to. Final Thoughts This week has been a reminder of how September is a turning point. Harvesting summer crops, preparing for winter, and planning ahead for next year. With compost, violas, herbs, and garlic all on the go it feels like the garden is full of energy and potential.

Software is unique: when it works as it should, no one thinks twice about it. But the moment there's a hiccup or delay, it becomes an issue.Building software that consistently runs seamlessly, while integrating additional features to create an “all-in-one” solution that's easy to use? That's nearly impossible.Kudos to Chris Violas and the Blaze team for achieving just that. Leveraging his AWS background, Chris has created a software environment that boasts an impressive 99.1% customer satisfaction score. The infrastructure may not be the sexiest part of software, but it's the foundation everything else is built on. Much like adding a second level to a house, it can either be a smooth process or a massive headache, depending on the strength of the foundation. This week, we sit down with Chris Violas to discuss:What most people don't know about software in cannabis.Infrastructure and the connection to customer success.Acquisitions, ecosystems, and the evolution of “all-in-one” solutions.About Blaze:A complete cannabis software suite designed to streamline and scale dispensary operations. BLAZE powers every aspect of your retail business with an intuitive point-of-sale, advanced inventory management, built-in loyalty, native e-commerce, and integrated cashless payments. Our goal is to provide a cohesive ecosystem that allows dispensaries to offer an exceptional shopping experience for customers.when we talk mission critical infrastructure, like our system, like it's not okay just to have a lag. We have someone in front of the point of sale, like literally pushing buttons and wanting to check out. And so there's just no space for issues.it's nice to have a storefront, but the reality is it is like 80% more efficient on so many levels to fulfill an online order than to have someone walk around with someone in store and hold their hand. Key Topics DiscussedChris's Entrepreneurial Journey (00:01:35)Started in college after breaking his wristLaunched a dispensary with his father during senior yearTransitioned to technology after realizing software could solve operational challengesBlaze's Technology Infrastructure (00:08:29)Focus on mission-critical, stable infrastructureDesigned with redundancy and performance in mindSeparating production and reporting databasesCompliance and Innovation Challenges (00:23:22)Navigating state-by-state regulatory variationsDeveloping solutions like Metric Retail ID for product serializationPotential time and cost savings for retailersPayment and E-commerce Strategies (00:49:51)Pushing towards more efficient online orderingImproving average order value through e-commerceExploring payment solutions in different marketsSocial Impact Initiative (00:42:23)Launching Blaze Cares partnership with SickKids Hospital in CanadaImplementing donation roundup program for retailers Guest Links:https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrisviolas/https://www.blaze.me/https://www.linkedin.com/company/goblaze/https://x.com/blazecannabishttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1ag_Kpjm6G8IAOaK8iTcIAOur Links Bryan Fields on Twitter Kellan Finney on Twitter The Dime on Twitter At Eighth Revolution (8th Rev), we provide services from capital to cannabinoid and everything in between in the cannabinoid industry.8th Revolution Cannabinoid Playbook is an Industry-leading report covering the entire cannabis supply chain The Dime is a top 5% most shared  global podcast The Dime has a New Website. Syngenta Flowers technical lead Dr. Brian Krug joins host Bill Calkins to discuss two new series—Pansy Delta Pro and Viola Penny Pro—sharing tips and tricks for maximizing production of these breakthrough new varieties. The Delta Pro pansy series was released a couple years ago as a comprehensive upgrade to Delta, an industry leader for more than 30 years and Penny Pro violas are new for 2025. When such iconic series are completely retooled, it shows that the breeders have been hard at work and truly identified improvements that can be brought to growers and end users.   Brian explains exactly why both Delta Pro and Penny Pro offer major benefits for growers, including Delta's super-short timing window (all colors bloom within 10 days!), reduced need for PGRs and huge 3-inch blooms; and Penny's flower power, non-stretching habit and vigorous root system.   After taking you through the key features, Dr. Krug dives deep into best practices when propagating and finishing both Delta Pro and Penny Pro. Although your production of these new series will look a lot like typical pansy and viola plans, there are a few nuances to note. Breeding for compact habit in production dictates lower PGR needs and the tight bloom window for Delta Pro means you don't have to stagger these pansies to ship the full color range in flower. Brian also shares some tips and tricks learned throughout the years working with pansy and viola growers that will no doubt benefit your team. NOTE: Delta Pro was bred for Spring OR Fall production, which is fantastic, and Brian touches on this in his presentation, as well as some regionally-specific advice to help growers across all of North America.   RESOURCES: Delta Pro—Produced for Precision: https://www.syngentaflowers-us.com/deltapro   Penny Pro—Produced for Performance: https://www.syngentaflowers-us.com/pennypro   Syngenta Technical Library: https://www.syngentaflowers-us.com/techlibrary/search/techlibrary   WATCH Delta Pro Grow—Comparison Trial Time Lapse Video: https://youtu.be/PnChUHNehcE?si=NVe-8QVNQe0XmZ_Z

There aren't many jobs for people who play viola, let alone top viola jobs. The Twin Cities is rare for having two professional orchestras with viola sections. That's what makes it possible for Maiya Papach and Rebecca Albers to chase their music dreams and create a life together in Minnesota. Maiya Papach is principal violist of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Rebecca Albers is the principal violist of the Minnesota Orchestra.  Coming up at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, MPR News host Angela Davis talks with the latest couple in her Power Pairs series about how to gracefully play a supporting role in music and in marriage.
