WISCONSIN MUSIC PODCAST Episode 53 Original Progressive Rock Guitarist, Rob Wessel   Robs' Bio:   "I began teaching myself guitar at age 13 or 14. I began learning guitar parts off of rock records at about age 15. In my 20s and into my 30s I took lessons and classes at the WI Conservatory of Music in jazz guitar and theory. I had classes with John Foshager and David Hazeltine, lessons with Michael Sullivan, and an ensemble class with Don Linke.  I attended guitar seminars at the National Guitar Workship with Mike Keneally, Jack Grassel, Matt Smith and Terry Syrek. I played in local groups Beacon and Jonah's Vacation and in my church's worship group through the 1990s.  I played in classic rock cover group Thick Aza Brick from 2001 to about 2010.  I played in local progressive rock group Lyndenthal from 2014 to 2019.   I taught guitar lessons at Academy of Music in Menomonee Falls from 2001 to 2012, at Wondersound Music in Menomonee Falls from 2012 to 2020, and at North Shore Academy of the Arts from 2009-2015.    I formed Concept of Innocence in 1998 to play my original progressive rock songs. The band ended up being a duo of myself and drummer Jim Kube and recorded one album, Songs From the Heart. The group ran its course after this album. Jim contributed to writing songs and performed drums. I wrote songs, and performed vocals, guitar, bass and programmed the synth parts.   Since 2010 I have been spending most of the time I have to devote to music working in my home studio recording progressive rock, blues, and ambient/electronic pieces, which I've posted on soundcloud and have released on Spotify, itunes, etc. Since 2019 I've worked exclusively on another progressive rock release, which will feature new original songs similar to Concept of Innocence but also incorporating some of the ambient electronic and maybe even the blues sounds I've recorded.   The name of the group whose album I released a year ago is Concept of Innocence. I am writing and recording more original progressive rock but don't yet know if I will release it under my name or a new band name."   Links: https://www.deezer.com/us/album/165643352   https://www.facebook.com/ConceptofInnocenceprog   https://open.spotify.com/album/3XVzmX6IUEI3WUGFGPavvX?fbclid=IwAR1MnAdruEQTjiV6f9_z4GTFf_-_BSSxXfegebaYS3p7Cc_JmLx5c8U9Zxs   https://music.apple.com/us/album/songs-from-the-heart/1526767597?uo=4&app=itunes&fbclid=IwAR0286WHVy4nTRe4tJLkIJZjYpwWY04dDY46bifFO_be08CQW6YACeTHpok ------------------- Wisconsin Music Podcast is:   Created, hosted, mixed, mastered, and edited by: Zach T Fell of ZTF Studio (www.ztfStudio.com)   Sponsored by: ZTF Studio   Podcast Theme Music created by: Nate Wycoff of Frequency Farm Recording Studio   Podcast Voice Over performed by: Dean Bundy   Syndicated on: cwHipHop.com – Wisconsin's online Hip Hop radio station

WISCONSIN MUSIC PODCAST FRIDAY MUSIC SHOWCASE #13   Artist: Robert Wessel Group: Concept of Innocence From the album Songs From the Heart by Concept of Innocence.    "As in Art": Taken from a saying that I'm not sure I'm quoting correctly. Someone I know once said "You have to live in the real world!". I thought "What's the real world? It's what we make it. It doesn't have to be an ugly place. We can make it something beautiful, the way an artist makes a thing of beauty out of something ordinary".   "From the Heart": There is something special and spiritual about music that comes from the heart. As a musician for many years, it has often been a battle between making music to appeal to some audience and making music that's true to myself.    "Without Limits": A song in which I tried to capture the joy and exhilaration of a life lived in search of one's own destiny rather than others determining one's destiny, and of reaching one's fullest potential, not letting limitations hold you back.   BIO:   I began teaching myself guitar at age 13 or 14. My guest today is Greg Skaff. A native of Wichita, Kansas, Greg is a NYC-based jazz guitarist and composer whose skills and reputation place him among the premier practitioners of his craft. After moving to New York in the early 1980s, Skaff's first professional gig was with the legendary Stanley Turrentine. The list of luminaries who have tapped Skaff for his fretwork includes Ron Carter, Bobby Watson, Freddie Hubbard, David Hazeltine, Martha Wash, and many others. With his latest CD release “Soulmation,” one reviewer reports that Greg Skaff reaches new heights as a guitarist and composer. Slated for late 2020 release, is a trio recording that finds Skaff in the company of two music legends - bassist Ron Carter and drummer “Tootie” Heath. Under normal circumstances, you can hear Greg's guitar playing at the Broadway musical Wicked, where he's manned the guitar chair since it opened in 2003. We welcome Greg to the show. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/brian-doherty8/support

How’s it going everybody, today I am speaking with saxophonist Ken Fowser. His lyrical approach to line construction and depth of harmonic sensibility allow him to record and play all over the world with such master players and burgeoning stars as David Hazeltine, Ugonna Okegwo, Donald Vega, Willie Jones III, Rick Germanson, Quincy Davis, David Wong, Jason Brown, Dezon Douglas and Rodney Green. A prolific composer, Fowser has celebrated four cooperative releases on Posi-tone Records, co-led with vibraphone virtuoso, Behn Gillece. His debut release as a leader, Standing Tall earned him the number-one spot on JazzWeek Radio Chart seven weeks in a row. Each track reflects a contemporary treatment of conventional harmonic concepts—a creative manipulation that has become part of his signature sound as a composer and an arranger, as well as a soloist. Set for release in February 2017, Now Hear This, Fowser’s second release as a soloist for Posi-tone features 11 original compositions and the same chart-topping lineup as Standing Tall: Josh Bruneau, Rick Germanson, Paul Gill and Jason Tiemann. Performing live every Friday night, his blistering quintet headlines the New York nightlife scene at the Django inside the Roxy Hotel on the corner of Walker and Church (www.thedjangonyc.com). Fowser’s fluid phrasing and melodic approach to improvising developed as a result of his exposure to the rich musical legacy of the Philly Sound, following in time with the rhythmic footsteps of John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, McCoy Tyner, Philly Joe Jones, Benny Golson and The Heath Brothers. Attending The University of the Arts in the early 2000s, Fowser studied with Tony Salicandro and Chris Farr, before transferring to William Paterson University in New Jersey, where he studied with NEA Jazz Master, Harold Mabern—an artistic force who remains one of Fowser’s major musical influences, today. As a grad student at SUNY Purchase, Fowser studied with contemporary legends of the tenor saxophone Ralph Lalama, Grant Stewart and Eric Alexander—the latter with whom he forged a professional relationship, subbing for Alexander on many of his gigs, and playing with him live, in classic two tenor context. Becoming more visible on the live music scene, in the latter 2000s Fowser enjoyed both downtown and uptown residencies at iconic New York venues. Hosting the session at Smalls Jazz Club every Tuesday for four years, and playing the late set at Smoke Jazz and Supper Club every Friday for two years, he followed headlining sets of such masters as the late Cedar Walton, Buster Williams and perhaps his greatest influence, GSupport the show (http://berniesbootlegs.com/support)

On this third installment of the Mob Town Tour series of episodes, we explore the Milwaukee jazz scene. I’ve always been interested in the Milwaukee players and sound, going back to when I was a young musician coming up in Madison. Here I talk to pianist David Hazeltine, bassist Jeff Hamann and pianist Mark Davis, and my father Ben, about the history of jazz in Milwaukee. We’re also exploring the idea of regional dialects when it comes to jazz, and music in general. What does it mean to have a bunch of creative people leaning in the same direction, or speaking in the same accent, and what brings that on? Particularly today, is it still possible retain local flavor and speak a regional dialect in a global world? Today all musicians have access to the same information - and that’s all the information. But do they still have access to their scene? third-story.com

During the course of the weekend, we connected with some wonderful jazz personalities, including Jon Batiste, Dr. John, Jason Lindner, Maria Schneider, Jose James, James Carter, Jamie Cullum, David Hazeltine, and Bob Dorough. Each of them helped us to paint the picture of real life as it comes into contact with a career in music.

This band of musicians are the cream of the crop of New York City's "straight-ahead" players. I hate to use that cliche phrase but to expand that a bit I would like to say that the musicians in this band reflect the deep and rich traditions of Jazz music while still remaining modern and relevant. The people involved in this great band called "One For All" have been playing together as a group for over 20 years and when you hear their music you'll understand that fact as the ensembles are tight and beautifully orchestrated to make the three horn front line sound much bigger than it is. There is a huge difference between a one time get-together of great musicians and a band and this is a BAND! The people involved are Jim Rotondi on trumpet and flugelhorn, Eric Alexander on tenor saxophone, Steve Davis on trombone, David Hazeltine on piano, John Webber on bass and the dynamic Joe Farnsworth on drums. When you read these names you will recognize them all as they are some of the most significant voices on their instruments in Modern Jazz. Sit back and enjoy the sounds of "One For All" and their latest offering: "Incorrigible".
