The More I See You Trombonist/composer Michael Davis has enjoyed a diverse and acclaimed career over the past 40 years. Widely known as the trombonist for five world tours with the Rolling Stones, he toured and recorded extensively with Frank Sinatra, has released 14 CDs as a solo artist, composed over 150 works, authored a dozen books for brass players of all levels and appeared on over 500 CDs, television themes and motion picture soundtracks. He is the founder, creator and president of Hip-Bone Music, Inc. In 2011, the S.E. Shires Company released the Michael Davis signature model trombone and followed that in 2014 with the release of the Michael Davis+ trombone. Born to a musical family in San Francisco, CA on August 13th, 1961, Michael's early musical studies included the piano, drums, tuba, baritone horn and electric bass. Settling on the trombone in high school, he quickly found his stride and received principal chairs in many all-state honor groups. His collegiate career commenced at the Eastman School of Music in the fall of 1979. In the spring of 1983, Davis received the break he had hoped for when the Buddy Rich Band called and asked him to sign on. His two-year stint with the band forged musical and personal friendships that continue to this day and presented him with “the best graduate degree anyone could possibly hope for.” Michael's freelance career in New York City began in earnest in 1986 and before long he was one of the top trombonists around. As testimony to his versatility and wide regard, the list of jazz and pop luminaries he has worked with includes: James Taylor, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Aerosmith, Tony Bennett, Jay Z, Sarah Vaughan, Sting, Beck, Branford Marsalis, Peter Gabriel, Sheryl Crow, Lyle Lovett, Bob Mintzer, Paul Simon, David Sanborn, Terence Blanchard and scores of others. In the field of music education, Davis has served as a guest artist and clinician around the world, while also authoring a number of highly esteemed instructional books and arrangements for musicians of all ages and abilities. A multiple recipient of awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, he maintains his own jazz groups and projects through Hip-Bone Music. He has documented his efforts on 14 CDs as a leader, including his latest, Open City with the Hip-Bone Big Band featuring a star studded line-up of New York jazz and studio luminaries. Open City showcases a unique family alliance with Michael's oldest son Cole penning three of the compositions, co-producing the entire project, and playing bass while his younger son Zaq brings his talents to the trumpet section. Currently, Davis continues his busy schedule as an in demand New York freelance musician with a steady diet of Broadway shows, studio recording work and live concerts. He travels extensively as a solo artist guesting with professional, college and high school bands around the world, while also continuing to build his publishing company into one of the preeminent purveyors of the highest quality music for brass.
Today's guest is Jake Reed.Jake is a drummer based in LA. His credits include Katy Perry, Seth Macfarlane and Bob Mintzer. He's also recorded on several TV and film soundtracks including “The Old Man”, “Queer As Folk (reboot)” and Cobra Kai.Amongst many other things, we discussed growing up in Kansas City, studying with Peter Erskine, learning through teaching, and dealing with the pressure of the studio. We didn't discuss it, but Jake has a very successful YouTube channel, and sells drum sample packs. The industry is changing ever so quickly, and I think it's important for us as session musicians to consider trying to create multiple income streams so we're not 100% reliant on the gigs and studio dates. Jake has certainly found his place in the drum sample world.Jake's YouTube channelI hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.(Recorded June 22nd 2023)Support the showFollow me on Instagram - @nategrooveSupport the show hereAny questions or guest suggestions, please email nwinsessionwith@gmail.comGet 20% off all Safari Pedals plugins. New York Voices are a jazz vocal quartet comprising four of my favourite musicians and people-Darmon Meader, Lauren Kinhan, Kim Nazarian, and Peter Eldridge. They've been described as “the gold standard for jazz vocals”, “timeless”, and “masters of their art.” They recently celebrated their 34th birthday and seem to go from strength to strength. Collaborations with Bob Mintzer, and the WDR Big Band are peppered throughout a touring career that has seen them perform on stages all over Europe, the USA, the UK, Israel and Asia. How do they do it? Why do they still do it? And what do they love about being part of a working band that continues to create at the highest standard? Well, listen to our conversation to discover the answers to those burning questions and so much more. Saxophonist Matt Carmichael has been making a big impression on audiences since he emerged on the Scottish jazz scene as a teenager with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland. No longer a teen, his debut album “Where Will The River Flow” was released in March 2021 and caught the attention of the WDR Big Band and Bob Mintzer, who has arranged the entire album for the band with Matt as a featured soloist. This concert will take place in March 2022 if you're lucky enough to be in Germany then. I love Matt's music for its emphasis on melody, the brilliant way it marries virtuosic Scottish traditional music with improvisation, and its ability to transport the listener to the greenest hills of Scotland. Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
Today's guest is Jake Reed. Jake is a Los Angeles-based session player / educator and the host of an incredible YouTube Channel breaking down recording techniques….(also, I must give a big shoutout to Blair Sinta for inspiring me to reach out to Jake after hearing him as a guest on the “Recording Drums with Blair Sinta” podcast). On top of knowing how to explain things in an extremely approachable way, Jake is simply an amazing drummer. He's performed / recorded with trioKAIT, Bill Holman, Johnny Mandel, Bill Cunliffe, Bruce Forman, Cow Bop, Seth MacFarlane, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Matt Forbes, Larry Goldings, Anthony Wilson, Adam Levy, Bob Mintzer, Les McCann, Freda Payne, the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, Andrew Synowiec, Mako, Ellis Hall, Tommy Torres, and Frenship. He's even been asked to sub for Peter Erskine soooooo there's that. I love his overall energy and perspective on this often-too-serious world of drumming and I knew his choices would expand my own palate and (since I'm recording this after our conversion) I can confidently say I was rightt…just like always! Anyways….I have a feeling Jake will be a recurring guest on this podcast in many facets…so I hope you like this one. If you don't. Just push PLAY while your phone is on mute because it's all about those numbers baby. Cheers. Between 1998 and 2003 I wrote and hosted a series on BBC Radio 2, New Jazz Standards. I played contemporary releases, but I also interviewed artists and recorded them playing live in my little studio in Chiswick, London. This show featured acclaimed group the YELLOWJACKETS. Originally broadcast in 2003, I interviewed Bob Mintzer who had just joined the group. A wonderful chance to hear that band on two life performances with Russel Ferrante, Jimmy Haslip and Marcus Baylor.
