Could Miles Davis' peak performance come alongside a bunch of kids who weren't even getting paid? In this episode, Peter and Adam dive into one of the greatest live albums ever captured, My Funny Valentine: Live at the Philharmonic (1964). We explore how Miles Davis, sideman George Coleman, and a young rhythm section (Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and teenage Tony Williams) made jazz history in real time with their one-of-a-kind (unpaid) voter registration benefit concert. Learn how the quintet remade Miles' go-to standards (“All of You”, “Stella”, “All Blues”...) with their conversational, free-flowing, spacious playing – and hear the evolution across Davis' career. Join us as we break down these incredible performances and prove why this underappreciated live album captures Miles' greatest playing ever (at least for Peter's ears).ABOUT OPEN STUDIO------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------As the premier online jazz education platform, with an ever-expanding course library and 20,000+ members, Open Studio (OS) has everything you need to excel and thrive on your jazz journey.Featuring everything from beginner to advanced lessons, engaging courses from A-list instructors, step-by-step curriculum, real-time classes and a thriving and incredibly supportive community, OS is the perfect platform to level up your jazz playing, whether you're a total beginner, or an advanced pro-level improvisor.Try OS Membership today! → https://osjazz.link/aboutAll about YHIhttps://lnk.to/youllhearitYB
Regarded as the most important and influential musician on the Irish jazz scene, saxophonist/flutist and composer Michael Buckley has been playing professionally since the age of six when critics hailed him as a child prodigy. Born in Dublin city in 1971 Michael first came to prominence on an International level when, aged 10, he played flute with the legendary saxophonist George Coleman in the National Concert Hall. Though largely self-taught, his obvious talent has been developed by his father Dick Buckley, and such legends as Milt Hinton. Buckley has found his unique voice playing both saxophone and flute. Buckley has been collaborating with the World Jazz Orchestra, where Michael represented Ireland, the Edinburgh Jazz Festival Orchestra (led by Tim Hagans), and small group tours and concerts with Dave Liebman, John Abercrombie, Joey Baron, Jason Rebello, Nils Wolgram, Tom Rainey, and Chander Sardjoe, to name but a few. Now in his early 40s, Buckley is rapidly becoming the most important producer of his generation. With countless albums ranging from jazz to traditional to hip-hop, Michael is making a name for himself internationally as a producer and engineer. Buckley has also performed and toured in recent years with The Mingus Big Band, Jason Moran, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Edward Simon, Pete King, Badal Roy, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Grant Stewart, Ingrid Jensen, Guy Barker, Greg Burk, Damon Brown, Kevin Dean, Florian Ross, soloist with the BBC big band, Albert Sanz, and Gerard Presencer among others. As well as frequent radio spots, Michael has made numerous television appearances, regularly works on film and television scores, and recently collaborated on recordings with Donovan, the Cranberries, The Coors, Jerry Lee Louis, and Johnny Mattis.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Russell Hall migrated to the United States in 2007 where his double bass studies progressed quickly through the rigorous programs of The Dillard Center for the Arts and The Juilliard School. Russell deeply understands the jazz tradition, having studied with many of the double bass world's most renowned artists including Ron Carter and Ben Wolfe. Still, he is also an artist looking forward with his own distinct approach to the double bass. As a first-call bassist in New York City, Russell has performed with some of the biggest names in music including Joey Alexander, Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Jon Batiste, Roy Hargrove, Kathleen Battle, Christian McBride, Emmet Cohen, Russell Malone, George Coleman and many more. Well known for his work with the Emmet Cohen Trio alongside drummer Kyle Poole, Russell also leads his own bands, including Bessie and the Rainbowkids to much critical acclaim. Russell Hall joined the Discover Double Bass faculty as a jazz bass specialist in 2022 where he presented his course, Bessie's Bass Busters. Russell Hall is well known as a member of the Emmet Cohen Trio and bassist for the wildly popular ‘Live From Emmet's Place' series. In this video, he was joined by non-other than the great Christian McBride for a tasteful double bass duo.
Francia fue posiblemente el país preferido de Miles Davis para tocar. Desde luego donde más veces lo hizo desde la primera en 1949 con tan solo 22 años. Una caja de seis discos, 'Miles in France. Miles Davis Quintet 1963 & 1964. The bootleg series vol. So what', 'All of you'. On the PRmoment Podcast, we catch up with UK public relations leaders and today we're chatting with Current Global CEO George Coleman. It's a timely discussion as we seem to be celebrating a few PR firm birthdays recently, so this is the latest in our unofficial “Birthday” Series as Current Global celebrates five years of existence!Current Global was born out of Weber Shandwick. It now has a reported fee income of over £35 m and about 300 employees globally, with about 30 in the UK.It describes itself as a multidisciplinary PR firm that works in corporate, healthcare, technology, and consumer sectors. It's an interesting example of a pretty young PR firm coming out of a holding group (in this case, Interpublic) and doing quite well. Over the past five years, most of the holding groups have mainly concentrated on merging their PR firms, not launching new ones!Clients include Microsoft, Novartis and FedEx.If you're listening to this podcast, it probably means you are interested in updating yourself on the challenges and opportunities that the future of public relations will offer. With that in mind, do take a look at our latest PR Masterclass: AI in PR. It's a cracker! Also, thanks so much to the PRmoment Podcast sponsors the PRCA.Here is a summary of what George and PRmoment founder Ben Smith discussed:2 mins Is Current Global one of those large, mid-sized global PR firms that many of our listeners might not have heard of?3 mins George gives a brief history lesson on how and why Current Global came about.“For us, it (the merger) was a positive, forward-looking move.”“If your reason to merge is to save money, that is a more difficult brief.”10 mins George talks about what it's like being a global CEO of a PR firm based out of London, when the US is the largest market for Current Global.“40-50% of my time is billable…I love the job… It's less about operations and the admin and more about doing great client work.”18 mins George reflects on the challenge of running a PR firm across global markets. “Culture is an expression of connection.”21 mins How have the complicated geo-political environment and the complicated societies that we seem to now live in impacted the type of work that PR firms do?“There seems to be an ongoing process of polarisation in public discourse fuelled by social media. Traditional media plays less of an influential role in creating that common ground, that understanding. A lot of our discussions are becoming more polarised, more tribal…We (society) can't even agree on facts."“Communications sits in the middle of that.”25 mins Brands face a challenge in leading conversations at the moment in this era of increased polarisation.27 mins “The importance of what we do has never been greater.”28 mins George reflects on how he thinks AI will impact the PR agency model over the next 18 months.“There are two ways AI is going to transform public relations…”“We've had ten years where search has been king. With AI, that dynamic changes.”35 mins What do global PR clients want currently?38 mins Why George believes that we're seeing a fundamental change in the PR agency: employee relationships. 42 mins George talks about the need for the PR sector as a whole to make its communications more accessible, reminding us that much of the tech you already have access to can transform the accessibility of their communications to a broader r

George Coleman Jr. was born into a musical family. As a drummer, producer, composer, filmmaker, and son of two musical jazz greats, saxophone legend George Coleman Sr. and organist, composer and vocalist, Gloria Coleman, he was seven when master drummer Max Roach gave him his first set of drums. George studied with master teachers including Sam Ulano, Michael Carvin and Billy Higgins. In 2019, George took on the role of film producer and released a documentary entitled “Another Kind of Soul: The Coleman Family Legacy”. The film chronicles his family's personal and musical histories and includes concert footage as well as interviews with his family and other iconic jazz figures including Branford Marsalis. Another Kind of Soul is available on various streaming services including Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, and Tubi TV. He has also released a new record as a leader entitled Resurgence. Born in 1967 to the late, great bassist Jamil Nasser, Muneer 's exposure to the jazz idiom was early and powerful. In 1976, "My dad took me to see Dizzy Gillespie at the Village Gate and Dizzy blew the place apart. I had to get a trumpet and weeks later I did." In 1979, he went to the International Art of Jazz Workshop for college students. Dave Burns, a trumpeter in Gillespie's Big Band, had reservations about his age. Muneer's talent, however, overshadowed this concern. "Mr. Burns acceptance fortified my confidence and I began studying with him." Muneer also received private instruction from George Coleman, Jimmy Owens, Oliver Beener, and Webster Young. These workshops and lessons taught him the basics of jazz improvisation, which were tested at serious jam sessions conducted by Eddie Henderson, Ted Curson, Tommy Turrentine, Barry Harris, C Sharpe, and Gil Coggins. "If you couldn't play, they would bench you with quickness and give you a homework assignment." As a youngster, Muneer saw many masters in concert such as George Coleman, Randy Weston, Lou Donaldson, Woody Shaw, Roy Eldridge, and Phineas Newborn.Support the show

On today's episode of Strictly Jazz Sounds, I have a conversation with Emmet about his show: how he selects the guests, the challenges doing the show, the dreams he holds for it and the impact he hopes to have on jazz as an artform. Emmet Cohen is a pianist, composer, bandleader, and internet entrepreneur. What began as a means to play a gig when the Covid 19 pandemic-imposed lockdown closed the Kansas City venue he was scheduled to play, became a whole other enterprise. Every Monday night at 7:30 pm ET since March 2020, Emmet Cohen, with his show “Live at Emmet's Place”, kicks off his shoes, sits at his Steinway piano, joined by his trio companions Russell Hall on bass and Kyle Poole on drums, and converts his Harlem apartment into one of the hottest places to be in New York City. It's the old-time Harlem rent party transformed into an internet-streamed production that has attracted millions of people the world over. Emmet and his trio initially performed on his iPhone. Today, he has an entire crew setting up the show and working it. Emmet has invited many performers from the New York jazz scene into his apartment along with others from the extended jazz diaspora. These include Patrick Bartley, Bruce Harris, Samara Joy, Christian McBride, Nicole Glover, Benny Bennack III, Veronica Swift, and many others. The legacy musicians include Joe Lovano, Sheila Jordon, Mary Stallings, Houston Person, Albert “Tootie” Heath, and George Coleman. The results have been nothing short of historical and amazing. As a result, Emmet has been recognized by the Jazz Journalists Association for what many consider as legendary and visionary streaming of live jazz.

One of the most overlooked masters of the alto saxophone is Frank Strozier. Frank is still alive in New York but reclusive. Mr. Strozier was one of the many talented musicians who was born in Memphis. He came up with pianist Harold Mabern, tenor saxophonists George Coleman, Charles Lloyd and trumpeter Booker Little. Frank like most of these players moved to Chicago and graduated from the Chicago Conservatory of Music then made his way to New York. Frank was praised by none other than John Coltrane as "having one of the most advanced harmonic senses of any young player on the scene today". Frank worked briefly with Miles Davis and then with drummer Roy Haynes and then moved to Los Angeles where he played with drummer Shelly Manne and big bands led by Oliver Nelson and Don Ellis and did movie and studio work. He moved back to NYC in 1971 and soon began recording for the Danish based Steeplechase label. Tonight's Jazz Feature is his second date done in November 1977. It spotlights Frank on alto saxophone and also flute along with the great but little known trumpeter Danny Moore on some tunes. Harold Mabern is on piano and he sparks this session. The rhythm is premier: Stafford James on bass and the great Louis Hayes on drums. The title track of course is the Marvin Gaye classic arranged by Harold Mabern and begins the date on a high level. Another Mabern selection follows and then three compositions by Frank Strozier conclude this important Jazz Feature. Check it out tonight!
Within about a week of home quarantine in March 2020, pianist Emmet Cohen started live-streaming shows every Monday night from his apartment in Harlem. At first it was just Cohen and his bandmates, drummer Kyle Poole and bassist Russell Hall, set up in Cohen's living room. Eventually they started inviting guests, and Emmet's Place became one of the spots for live jazz in pandemic New York. Six months in, it had really caught on: the Emmet's Place performance of “La Vie en Rose” featuring singer Cyrille Aimée has over 4 million views on Youtube. Since then, Emmet's Place has become a kind of jazz incubator in New York; featured guests have included legends like Houston Person, Victor Lewis, Joe Lovano, Sheila Jordan, Randy Brecker, Regina Carter, Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, and dozens more. Cohen has one foot planted in the future and the other in the past. Maybe that's why he chose to call his most recent record Future Stride: as a nod to the stride piano that he loves and the modern world in which he lives. That tension between these two impulses, the old school and the new, is at the heart of the Emmet Cohen phenomenon. He's deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, and believes in the importance of oral history and intergenerational connection. When he was in his 20s (not so long ago!) he made a series of albums, live interviews, and performances featuring jazz masters Jimmy Cobb, Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Albert “Tootie” Heath, and George Coleman. He called it the Master Legacy Series. Meanwhile, he's an active digital citizen. He was quick to embrace streaming, NFTs, and direct-to-fan connection. (He offers a subscription service to his fans to support his work directly.) He's a product of the 21st century and he understands how to thrive in both physical and virtual space. We got together recently to talk about how he straddles the line between tradition and modernity, starting out as a prodigy in Miami, being a “repertory player,” his community in Harlem, “blues therapy” and the common lesson he learned from all his mentors. It's episode 75 and we have a double feature for you guys! We've danced around jazz music up to this point, as it is an influence on many other music genres, but today we're finally diving in to jazz proper. Since there were so few tracks on these albums (and because jazz music is a little harder to discuss), we decided to do our first double feature for an artist. First we have Hancock's 1965 album "Maiden Voyage", which is very much what you'd expect when throwing on jazz, which is in this case considered "modal jazz". Considering Hancock was only 24 at the time, this album was extraordinarily sophisticated. Coming off the heels of playing with Miles Davis, he employed some amazing jazz legends to help him make his mark, with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor sax, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. These songs became so big that a few of them are still standards for jazz bands today. But Hancock wasn't one to dwell on the past. His time with Miles Davis taught him that he needed to constantly push and reinvent himself. Eight years later, with the release of "Head Hunters" he did just that by making a fusion of jazz and funk, and changed the whole jazz game in the process. This brought him out of the purely jazz scene, which was fading from relevance, and into a fresh, new world where the youth were picking up on his music and loving every second of it. This album is astounding start to finish and there's a reason that it is so highly regarded by critics and hipsters alike: It slaps. With the regular crew, Brad, Jon, Dave, and Jake Foster!!!
