Seven musicians, two recordings, five songs: musical magic. This week marks the 65th anniversary of “Kind of Blue,” the iconic album recorded and performed by a young group of talented rising stars – John Coltrane, Julian “Cannonball” Adderly, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb and Wynton Kelly – before they were jazz legends, all under the leadership of the visionary trumpeter Miles Davis. “Kind of Blue” remains a treasured classic recording and is still selling copies, still taught in music classrooms, still covered by jazz musicians and still deconstructed by cultural critics. So why has Kind of Blue endured as the top classic jazz album for 65 years? We speak with three jazz experts to learn more about the revolutionary album.

From the age of ten, Steve immersed himself in classical percussion, marching drumlines, pit orchestras and big band jazz ensembles. He then made the commitment to study with world-renown jazz drummer Danny Gottlieb at the University of North Florida. There he had the opportunity to learn the extensive hand techniques originated by Joe Morello. He focused on the history of jazz drummers, most notably Mel Lewis and his influence on big band drumming. As well as the drummers of Count Basie and gravitated towards small group drummers such as Shelly Manne, Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy Cobb, Ben Riley and Ed Thigpen. During his time in Jacksonville, Steve met Ulysses Owens Jr. a native Floridian and NYC based jazz drummer. For five years Owens mentored Steve on drums and the music industry. Under Ulysses' guidance, Steve expanded his musical knowledge and mindset and was given the tools required to be a successful musician in New York. This mentorship jump started Steve's journey to New York City in 2011, where he studied with Billy Drummond at New York University Steinhardt School of Music while pursuing his Master's Degree in Jazz Performance. After graduating from NYU in 2013, Steve Picataggio began a professional career as a bandleader and sideman. He has performed at The Blue Note Jazz Club, Birdland, The Kitano, The Bar Next Door and Feinstein's 54 Below. His debut record Two Feet on the Ground features original compositions and arrangements and is available on iTunes and CD Baby. He performs regularly in New York with jazz and Broadway singers, straight ahead jazz small groups, big bands, cabaret, and musical theatre shows. Steve has also toured the US performing with the jazz group The Hot Sardines. In 2018, Steve began playing drums for Suzi Shelton, an award winning children's music singer/songwriter. Performances include Outreach morning concerts for the Brooklyn Public Schools, Fort Greene Music Festival, Madison Square Park Summer Festival, Brookfield Place and The Levitt Pavilion in Westport, Connecticut. He also played in Suzi's band for a performance and interview on Kids Place Live at the Sirius XM Radio Studios in Washington, DC. Steve has been the drummer for Broadway's Lesli Margherita since 2013 and appears on her record Rule Your Kingdom: Live at 54 Below (Broadway Records), All Hail The Queen (Feinstein's 54 Below) and Broad (Birdland Jazz Club). He also plays drums for Wicked Divas, a cabaret show featuring current and former actors from Wicked. He has played the Off-Broadway shows Under The Bodhi Tree (Royal Family Theater) and About Love (Sheen Center).
The Moss Center in Blacksburg, Virginia presented a live performance and historic collaboration between renowned poet and Virginia Tech legend Nikki Giovanni and saxophonist-composer and former Jazz Messenger Javon Jackson. Their collaboration for over a year has yielded the CD The Gospel According to Nikki Giovanni. For an intimate jazz performance, Jackson brought his bold-toned, Trane-inspired tenor lines to bear on a series of hymns, spirituals, and gospel numbers hand-picked by Giovanni. The live performance also included jazz singer, Nnenna Freelon. This collaboration with Nikki Giovanni produced Jackson's fifth album for his Solid Jackson Records label. With a remarkable career as a Jazz saxophonist, Jackson released a potent tribute to a towering influence, Celebrating John Coltrane. His inaugural release on Solid Jackson Records featured the venerable drummer and former Coltrane collaborator Jimmy Cobb. He followed later in 2012 with Lucky 13, which featured the great soul-jazz keyboardist Les McCann and included a mellow instrumental rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry' Bout a Thing" along with a version of McCann's 1969 hit, "Compared to What." That same remarkably productive year, Jackson received the prestigious Benny Golson Award from Howard University in Washington, D.C., for recognition of excellence in jazz. Jackson's debut on the Smoke Sessions label, 2014's Expression, was a live quartet recording from the Smoke Jazz & Supper Club in Upper Manhattan. https://javonjackson.com/
In this episode, I join jazz bassist, composer, and bandleader Omer Avital in his beautiful, intimate studio in Brooklyn, NY. Born in Givatayim, Israel, to Moroccan and Yemeni parents, Omer studied classical guitar from age 11 before eventually shifting to acoustic bass. We talk about his 1992 arrival in New York, where he shook up the city playing in groups with jazz legends Roy Haynes, Jimmy Cobb, Kenny Garrett, and Rashied Ali. We discuss his musical influences and the importance of learning about the elders and jazz masters who paved the way for him, as well as politics in the Middle East and how he views it all as an artist. Lastly we consider the Brooklyn oasis he created called Wilson Live. Founded in 2018, Wilson Live provides a platform that enables local artists to document and present their work in an easy and effective way, all while forming a musical community in the heart of the borough. Wilson Live hosts weekly musical happenings with great homemade food by its culinary curator, Yoav Adereth.https://www.omeravital.com
Born on June 16, 1965, in Carthage, Missouri, Javon Jackson was raised in Denver, Colorado and chose saxophone at the age of 10. At age 16 he switched from alto to tenor and later enrolled at the University of Denver before spending part of 1985–86 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He left Berklee in 1986 to join Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, where he later played alongside pianist Benny Green, trumpeter Philip Harper, trombonist Robin Eubanks and bassist Peter Washington. Jackson remained a fixture in the Jazz Messengers until Blakey's passing in 1990. In 1991, Jackson made his recording debut with Me and Mr. Jones, featuring James Williams, Christian McBride, and master drummer Elvin Jones. He joined Jones' group in 1992, appearing on the great drummer's albums Youngblood and Going Home. Jackson's 1994 Blue Note debut, When the Time Is Right, was a straight-ahead affair produced by iconic jazz vocalist and bandleader Betty Carter. His subsequent four recordings for the Blue Note label through the ‘90s were produced by Craig Street and featured wildly eclectic programs ranging from Caetano Veloso, Frank Zappa and Santana to Muddy Waters, Al Green and Serge Gainsbourg. His subsequent four recordings for the Palmetto label had him exploring a blend of funk, jazz and soul with such stellar sidemen as organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, guitarists Mark Whitfield and David Gilmore, trombonist Fred Wesley and drummer Lenny White. In 2009, Javon was commissioned by the Syracuse International Film Festival to compose a full-length score for the Alfred Hitchcock film, “The Lodger,” a silent movie based on the hunt for Jack the Ripper. The original score had its debut at the festival, performed live by Jackson's band (featuring pianist Manasia) at the film's screening in October 2010. In 2012, the saxophonist released a potent tribute to a towering influence, Celebrating John Coltrane, his inaugural release on his Solid Jackson Records which featured the venerable drummer and former Coltrane collaborator Jimmy Cobb. He followed later in 2012 with Lucky 13, which featured the great soul-jazz keyboardist Les McCann and included a mellow instrumental rendition of Stevie Wonder's “Don't You Worry ‘Bout a Thing” along with a version of McCann's 1969 hit, “Compared to What.” That same remarkably productive year, Jackson was the recipient of the prestigious Benny Golson Award from Howard University in Washington, D.C. for recognition of excellence in jazz. Jackson's debut on the Smoke Sessions label, 2014's Expression, was a live quartet recording from the Smoke Jazz & Supper Club in Upper Manhattan. On February 18, 2022, Javon will release, The Gospel According to Nikki Giovanni, his fifth album for his Solid Jackson Records label. Conception based teachings, the interactions between the bass and drums, and mastering alternate side parking. Adam Scone (Adam Scone, Scone Cash Players, The Sugarman 3) The Florida Room, Episode 6 - Scone Cash Players- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoFnbjkVhwo “Adam Scone is a Hammond Organ specialist. The sound of the Hammond will get inside of your heart and pound out some emotion. Scone transformed from a young wiz kid to a seasoned master due to a few key factors. One was years playing a six night a week gig at a classic organ lounge in New York City. The other was getting the chance to tour the world playing Hammond B3 organ with great bands. First were the incredible tours with Daptone Recording artist Sugarman Three. This exposed him to an international audience at the worlds top Music Festivals. These included Glastonbury in the UK, Montreaux Festival in Switzerland, and the North Sea Festival in the Netherlands to name a few. Scone also played in Jazz and Boogaloo Legend Lou Donaldson's band at the Village Vanguard and the Blue Note in New York City. Scone has also shared the stage or recorded with legends with Jimmy Cobb, George Braith, Ben Dixon, Lee Fields, Fred Thomas & Naomi Shelton. He was also selected a 4 time Jazz Ambassador by Lincoln Center & Kennedy Center for the Arts. a selection that took him to over 35 different countries to play organ. Then he directed his attention to the Organ sound in Rock and Roll, spending five years of relentless touring with southern rock masters JJ Grey & Mofro. Scone played the US's top festivals including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits and Bumbershoot. Scone's organ playing has appeared on over 50 albums.” Excerpt from https://www.adamscone.com/about Adam Scone: Bandcamp: https://adamscone.bandcamp.com/album/low-slow Instagram: @adamscone Website: https://www.adamscone.com Records: https://adamscone.bandcamp.com/album/low-slow Scone Cash Players: Bandcamp: https://sconecashplayers.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @sconecashplayers Website: https://www.sconecashplayers.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/scone-cash-players Merch: https://sconecashplayers.bandcamp.com/merch The Sugarman 3: Bandcamp: https://thesugarman3.bandcamp.com Records: https://daptonerecords.com/artists/the-sugarman-3/ Merch: https://thesugarman3.bandcamp.com/merch The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5Ndle3K... Tonight an iconic recording and a classic. Tenor saxophone master John Coltrane and his seminal recording "Giant Steps". Coltrane performs here with a hand picked quartet with the magnificent Tommy Flanagan on piano who with his light touch and lyricism provides a perfect foil for Coltrane's intensity. Coltrane's favorite bassist is here...Mr. P.C. aka Paul Chambers and drum great Arthur Taylor whom Coltrane liked for his tough swing and great cymbal ride. All the compositions are by Coltrane and they cover the gamut of feelings from blasting intensity to the soft ballad styling of "Naima" dedicated to Mrs. Coltrane to the playfulness of Syeeda's Song Flute, for his daughter.. All of this was recorded in New York for Atlantic Records on May 8, 9,1959. "Naima" was from a later recording date with Coltrane, Wynton Kelly on piano, Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Coltrane chose the sequence of tunes and liked this later version of Naima and chose it for the album. That's it...tonight's Jazz feature: "Giant Steps".

The great New Orleans clarinetist Jimmie Noone had prolific life in the recording studio with his band, variously called the Apex Club, El Rado or Nest Orchestra, the two reed front line was unique, as was the focus on sophisticated pop songs of the day in addition to jazz and blues. In these last four sessions (1931, 33, 34, and 35) Noone is paired with saxophonist and vocalist Eddie Pollack and occasionally trumpeter Jimmy Cobb along with either Zinky Cohn or Earl Hines on piano, John Henley on guitar, either Quinn Wilson or John Lindsay on bass and Benny Jackson on drums. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-clark49/support

Oct 15, 2021 In this episode of SOMETHING came from Baltimore, I chat with Joey D about his new recording, "More Music". There is a Youtube exclusive interview also on this site where he chats about Questlove and Christian McBride...and we go down memory lane and chat about Philly's Orlieb's Jazzhauz. Bio On Joey D.! Raised in Philadelphia, this is where the foundation of his musical roots in Jazz, Blues and other musical art forms were born. To hear Joey DeFrancesco today, his music embodies the traditional art form infused with a distinct modern approach, just part of what makes his music unmistakably his own. " He has dominated the instrument and the field as no one of his generation has.” – Chicago Tribune “Mr. DeFrancesco is a deeply authoritative musician, a master of rhythmic pocket, and of the custom of stomping bass lines beneath chords and riffs.” - New York Times Joey DeFrancesco's emergence in the 1980s marked the onset of a musical renaissance. Organ jazz had all but gone into hibernation from the mid-'70s to the mid-'80s until DeFrancesco reignited the flame with his vintage Hammond organ and Leslie speaker cabinet. The son of "Papa" John DeFrancesco, an organist himself, the younger DeFrancesco remembers playing as early as four-years-old. Soon after, his father began bringing him to gigs in Philadelphia, sitting in with legendary players like Hank Mobley and Philly Joe Jones, who quickly recognized his talent and enthusiasm. With a natural gift for music, DeFrancesco also swiftly picked up on the trumpet after a touring stint with Miles Davis as one of the two youngest players ever recruited for any of Davis' ensembles. DeFrancesco has recorded and/or toured with his own groups as well as numerous renowned artists that include Ray Charles, Van Morrison, Diana Krall, Nancy Wilson, George Benson, James Moody, John Scofield, Bobby Hutcherson, Jimmy Cobb, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, David Sanborn and many more. The four time Grammy® Award-nominee, with more than 30 recordings as a leader under his belt, has received countless Jazz Journalist Association awards and other accolades worldwide, including being inducted into the inaugural Hammond Organ Hall of Fame in 2014, the Philadelphia Music Walk of Fame in 2016 as well as topping the Critics Polls in DownBeat Magazine eleven times over the past fifteen years and the Readers Polls every year since 2005. DeFrancesco also hosts a weekly program on SiriusXM Radio's Real Jazz channel titled "Organized." More Music, due out September 24, via Mack Avenue Records, is “more” in every conceivable way. It offers up ten new DeFrancesco originals, brought to life by a scintillating new trio. And the master organist, who has long supplemented his keyboard virtuoso with his skilled trumpet playing, here brings out his full arsenal: organ, keyboard, piano, trumpet, and, for the first time on record, tenor saxophone. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/support
"Kind Of Blue" de Miles Davis es el título en que se centra este episodio, donde revisamos la importancia de esta obra, los músicos participantes en ella y su influencia para la escena del jazz de la época, entre otros aspectos.
Within about a week of home quarantine in March 2020, pianist Emmet Cohen started live-streaming shows every Monday night from his apartment in Harlem. At first it was just Cohen and his bandmates, drummer Kyle Poole and bassist Russell Hall, set up in Cohen's living room. Eventually they started inviting guests, and Emmet's Place became one of the spots for live jazz in pandemic New York. Six months in, it had really caught on: the Emmet's Place performance of “La Vie en Rose” featuring singer Cyrille Aimée has over 4 million views on Youtube. Since then, Emmet's Place has become a kind of jazz incubator in New York; featured guests have included legends like Houston Person, Victor Lewis, Joe Lovano, Sheila Jordan, Randy Brecker, Regina Carter, Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, and dozens more. Cohen has one foot planted in the future and the other in the past. Maybe that's why he chose to call his most recent record Future Stride: as a nod to the stride piano that he loves and the modern world in which he lives. That tension between these two impulses, the old school and the new, is at the heart of the Emmet Cohen phenomenon. He's deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, and believes in the importance of oral history and intergenerational connection. When he was in his 20s (not so long ago!) he made a series of albums, live interviews, and performances featuring jazz masters Jimmy Cobb, Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Albert “Tootie” Heath, and George Coleman. He called it the Master Legacy Series. Meanwhile, he's an active digital citizen. He was quick to embrace streaming, NFTs, and direct-to-fan connection. (He offers a subscription service to his fans to support his work directly.) He's a product of the 21st century and he understands how to thrive in both physical and virtual space. We got together recently to talk about how he straddles the line between tradition and modernity, starting out as a prodigy in Miami, being a “repertory player,” his community in Harlem, “blues therapy” and the common lesson he learned from all his mentors. Tonight the Jazz feature spotlight is on a sadly neglected and forgotten great voice of the tenor saxophone: Walter Benton. Walter after touring with Latin bandleader Perez Prado Walter returned to his home town of L.A. and freelanced there until he decided to move to New York in 1960. Here he joined Max Roach and his band and achieved a higher profile. He was asked to do an album for Jazzland Records, a division of Riverside Records run by the indominable Orrin Keepnews. This album is our Jazz Feature but sadly Walter Benton's only album under his name. Walter was given carte blanche and he picked a young Freddie Hubbard on trumpet for the front line and Miles Davis' rhythm section for the rest with Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums for the first session and Albert "Tootie" Heath replacing Cobb for the second session a few days later. This fine album has 5 good original compositions by Walter and two fine standards beginning with the title track "Out of This World" and Walter's ballad feature "Lover Man". The highlight is Walter's smoky sounding saxophone and his authoritative concept. Walter was a distinctive and original player who deserved much more recognition and opportunities than he received but I'm very happy to share this fine album with you as our Jazz Feature tonight.
Grammy nominated saxophonist Tim Armacost has established himself as one of the most distinct saxophone voices on the New York scene today. Touring regularly around the world both as a sideman and a leader, Armacost has worked with a phenomenal number of jazz greats, including Al Foster, Jimmy Cobb, Kenny Barron, Tom Harrell, Billy Hart, […]
This is a very special edition of The Miles Davis Quintet. After the departure of pianist Bill Evans and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Miles Davis performed with John Coltrane, Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Jimmy Cobb (drums)....a quintet. John Coltrane decided to leave the group as he was about to form his own band and Miles Davis needed another saxophone player. Davis' first choice was Jimmy Heath but circumstances prevented Jimmy from travelling outside of New York and Philadelphia so Miles chose his old pal who he knew since the 1940's....Sonny Stitt. Stitt was adept on both alto and tenor saxophones and knew thousands of songs! Unfortunately during Stitt's six month stay in the band, there were no domestic recordings. Fortunately while on a short Fall tour in 1960 this special quintet was recorded in England and in Sweden. It's the Swedish concert that is our Jazz Feature tonight. It was recorded by Swedish Radio and has great audio quality. The playing is superb with Miles in great form with some inspired Sonny Stitt. The best rhythm section in Jazz propels them both to great heights. Miles Davis, Sonny Stitt, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb....five giants of music.....enjoy!
Back in 1996 I was lucky to have dinner with Jimmy Cobb in a small town in northern Japan. Today, as we mourn Jimmy's passing and celebrate his life, I'd like to share that story.
