Howdy and so long! We hate to say it, but season 3 is about to be in the rearview mirror. Wow. 3 Seasons. It's incredibly humbling to have been able to make it this far, so let me start off by speaking for both Idiots when I say thank you, thank you, thank you for supporting us then, now, and in the future. As has become a tradition, we like to end or begin seasons with more lighthearted things, and we brought back Dr. Dean Scott for this season closer, and he bookends the season nicely. We talk all sorts of fictional creatures, some from books suggested to us by the Brain Witch Idiot, and some from Dean's books. These include dragons and griffins from the Empyrian Series (for the love of god, Rebecca Yarros, please don't sue me) and the Harry Potter series (for the love of god, JK Rowling, please learn about love) and critters from Scott's book series "The Dragon Vet" and "The Half-Life of Grief". Everything Scott writes is amazing, please, check him out, but check out our second conversation with him. Then, inbetween waiting for next season to drop and re-listening to our entire back log and listening to Cory Johnson and the Broken Nightscape's musical breadth, you can read his many books. You can find the Common Idiot's music on any streaming service. You can also hear a song written and performed in about an hour (without the studio, so the quality isn't great, but it's an homage to you!) at the end of this episode, which may or may not eventually be on all streaming services, with the rest of my music. Also, still planning on a full album out soon. Still so excited. While I'm stealing the spotlight and being selfish for a second, I do want to take a moment to be vulnerable. I have a bit of a...stomach issue. The doctors are still working on figuring out what it is exactly. Don't worry, this isn't a "I have 3 months to live" message, but it's still important to be open. The best guess is GERD, but it presents in a lot of different ways. There are some other health complications that might be along side and either exacerbating the problem, or being a menace of its own. Unsure, and unclear. The worst part, from a performer's standpoint, is I sometimes have difficulty swallowing, and I'm quite literally unable to do anything until it passes. So, if you've heard times where it sounds like I'm letting out a big sigh of disinterest, it is because I'm finally drawing my first breath in 30 seconds, or have moments where I pause for a long time between words, same thing. Adding to this is I have a tic in my face that sort of comes and goes, and I think sometimes these two problems love to tag team me into submission. It honestly has affected my confidence, but that's a whole different thing. The problem manifests itself, too, with a lot of burping, or even just throat sound from my esophogus doing...idk, bullshit things. I normally edit it all out, but it's often extremely time consuming. I did not do that in this one, and it can be heard. I apologize if it sickens you. I'm not a fan of the sound, hopefully everything else distracts nicely. There have been a few other episodes where it was there and I either missed them in editing, or ran out of time and had to leave them. I shied away, I'm not anymore. Also, I'm seeking treatment, trying to fix it, and hopefully it will never be a problem in the future. A note about Kent. I want to take a second to just thank my best friend on this whole fucking planet for being with me in this. He could have picked a lot more qualified people to run this with, he chose me. He does tend to make poor life choices. Anyway, I love you, brother. JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - House Bill 1020, one of the more controversial bills passed during the 2023 Legislative session, is now in effect. “We're all excited about working with more law enforcement because any time you see blue lights, you're gonna not quite commit the crime,” said Wendell Watts. Previously, the Capitol Complex Improvement District spanned over 8.63 square miles. Now, that coverage area has doubled, giving Capitol Police primary jurisdiction in 15% of Jackson. “We've been building our police force, too,” said Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell. “We were granted up to 150 officers a year ago, and we've reached that goal. We actually have a couple more than that. So we built that foresight, [and] we've been preparing, and we're ready for the expansion.” So what happens if you call 911 in the new CCID? “911, right now, will go through all of us, Watts explained. “[It] will go through the Jackson Police Department. Now once AT&T is done with the 911 system for Capitol [Police], they will be routed to their dispatch system at that point.” When it comes to the new court system where judges and prosecutors are appointed rather than elected, construction on the new court house and holding facility is still in the works. “I think there were certain aspects of it that was struck down,” Tindell said. “But one of the things that did remain was having the CCID court, which is focused on misdemeanors, preliminary hearings, and bond hearings. Every municipality across the state has one of those.” However, Chief Justice Mike Randolph has yet to appoint a CCID judge at this time, which means the Jackson Municipal Court judges will continue to handle Capitol Police cases. Despite the coordination overlap in dispatch, court hearings, and cases, DPS and JPD feel the transition will be smooth. “I haven't seen that type of collaboration in a very long time,” Watts said. “I think we're going do a lot for the city.” “This is by no means a takeover,” Tindell said. “This is a force multiplier, and law enforcement agencies working together to create a safer city.” _________________________________________________________________ HINDS COUNTY, Miss. — The Hinds County Sheriff's Office is teaming up with Capitol police to launch the "4th of July Holiday Blitz." The operation, which kicks off Wednesday, July 3, and goes through Sunday, July 7, is aimed at enhancing safety and promoting “responsible celebrations during the holiday weekend,” according to a news release from the sheriff. The operation will include saturation patrols across Hinds County to deter criminal activity and enforce traffic laws. Residents can also expect to see traffic safety checkpoints that will target impaired drivers and seat belt violations, among other safety concerns. “Let's celebrate safely,” Sheriff Tyree Jones said. “Designate a sober driver, buckle up and enjoy the holiday responsibly.” ___________________________________________________________________ JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - A former Pearl police chief who was the subject of a 3 On Your Side investigation into possible misuse of Rankin County tax dollars now has a high-ranking role at one state agency while he's being investigated by another. The Department of Public Safety confirmed Dean Scott started working for Capitol Police on July 1. Spokesperson Bailey Martin said Scott was hired as a lieutenant and will be over communications and dispatch but did not disclose his salary. The average annual pay for a lieutenant with Capitol Police is approximately $70,000, according to records WLBT obtained from the Mississippi State Personnel Board. “With the growth of Capitol Police, the department is continuing to build its team and seeking experienced law enforcement officers to meet the demands of the expanding district,” Martin said in a statement to WLBT. “Dean Scott's former experience in communications will be an asset as a Dispatch Supervisor.”

This case was sent to us by a listener named Erin. HI, Erin! Anne reveals a winning recipe for a delicious Pound Cake and redeems herself from an early Pound Cake disaster. Karen unpacks a case that draws eerie similarity to the case of their book, CLICK, CLICK, CLICK. Set in a community within Henrico County, VA, this is a case of Mortal Frenemies. Dean Scott Phillips was described as a confident, thriving teenager on his way to chase his future at Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State University (VA Tech). His friends say he was a fierce baseball and swimming competitor that strived to make others laugh and wanted to be friends with everyone. In July 1989, just after high school graduation, Scott Phillips worked at a roofing company for his summer job before leaving for his freshman year in college in August. Also working at that roofing company was his classmate, Matthew Miller. When Scott accepted an invitation from Matthew to join him for an afternoon of three-wheeling and target shooting in the swamps of the Chickahominy River, it was a fatal mistake. Only one of the boys exited the swamp alive that day. #frenemies #AK47S #hidingabody #partialconfession #halftruth #violence #autopsy #causeofdeath #medicalexaminerreport #murderinvestigation #milliondollarpoundcake #killavanilla #karendevanie #annescott #jealousy #psychiatricevaluation #smalltownmurder #redemption Indie Pod spotlight: The MILF and Me podcast - Ya gotta hear this awesome podcast! Prospects for the Green New Deal legislative package were looking dim after it was introduced in Congress early last year. But since then it's had some surprising ripple effects. For example, Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) used his early support of the Green New Deal to fend off an intra-party challenge from Rep. Joe Kennedy III. Markey beat Kennedy by more than 10 percentage points in their state's Sept. 1 primary. On this episode of Parts Per Billion, environment reporter Dean Scott explains how Markey used his environmental credentials to hold onto his seat and how the Green New Deal may play a significant role on Capitol Hill for years to come.
