In this Allocator's Edge episode of the Value Perspective we're joined by Greg Dean, the founder of Langdon Equity Partners, an asset management firm he launched just two and a half years ago after an impressive career at Cambridge Global Asset Management. This is the first in at least four episodes where we will dive deep into the challenges of launching an asset management business, exploring the tough decisions risks and insights that come with setting up a boutique firm. We discuss Greg's journey in building Langdon Equity Partners, the thought process behind going independent and the obstacles he faced along the way. From avoiding hindsight bias in decision making to understanding why small cap stocks hold their appeal in today's market, Greg shares his expertise on everything from global small cap strategies to the ongoing battle between active and passive management. In this episode of Girl, You So Random, I had the pleasure of talking with Comedian, D'Marie born and raised in LA. She's a standup comedienne whose style of comedy is observational and definitely her own! She's performed at Hollywood Improv, Ice-House Comedy Club, Pioneer Dancer Awards (honoring the legendary “Original Lockers” Dance Group, presented by The Dancer Jo Foundation), and more! Studying under the “Comedy Teacher's Teacher,” Greg Dean, as well as the comedic legend and “King of Venice Beach,” Michael Colyar, D'Marie's act can range from her family, to her relationship and slight addiction to Randy's Doughnuts, all the way to exploring why men over 75 always seem to approach her - don't ask. She may be considered a millennial, but she's got a soul of gold which allows her to reach audiences both young and old. She believes that her stage presence, honesty, transparency, and desire to have and bring fun onstage are what truly stands out in her act.   IG/TT: @TearItUpDee   FB: @dmarie.marie.129 Vocals by: Dian Sentino @belifuna Follow me on IG @drhollysfunny

The Rules of Investing
Why trying to time small caps is a "big waste of time"

The Rules of Investing

Much has been made of the “Great Rotation” of late and the move away from highly concentrated large caps into small-cap equities, particularly in the US. Greg Dean, founder of Langdon Equity Partners, is having none of it. When quizzed about whether the rotation was impacting how Dean and his team invest, the short answer was ‘no'. Late last year, amid widespread commentary about 2024 being the ‘year for small caps', Langdon wrote about the time and energy people spend talking about timing in small caps and called it a “big waste of time”. Dean feels a similar way about the rotation. “The reality is if you wait for the perfect time, you've probably missed out on a lot of opportunity during that period when fewer people were interested”, says Dean. Dean founded Langdon in 2021 on the concept of a “clean sheet of paper” – i.e. not being beholden to anyone but investors. His philosophy is built on deep research and holding management to account, allowing him to ‘trust but verify'. He adds that speaking with management is a delicate balance that is often “executed poorly”. “You think you have to be aggressive and definitive or you have to be a “yes” person and agree with everything that they're telling you, and neither of those is optimal”, says Dean. In the following episode of The Rules of Investing, Dean delves deeper into small-cap investing, explains why he and his team take more than 300 individual company meetings each year, talks through the current portfolio tilt, and shares why the fund favours Europe over the US. He also upacks two global small-cap stock ideas that highlight Langdon's approach.  Note: This episode was recorded on 31 July 2024. In the same way that Moneyball has swept every professional sport, data science is bringing greater transparency into portfolio managers' decision-making skill. Decision attribution, which analyses the buy and sell decisions of individual portfolio managers, helps identify patterns of demonstrated skill - and specific areas for improvement. For portfolio construction practitioners seeking to select managers capable of outperforming, behavioural analysis of fund managers is crucial. - Essentia Analytics' Clare Flynn Levy and Langdon Equity Partners' Greg Dean. Today's episode is the next in our series of profiles of emerging investment firms. In these interviews, we dive deep into the various components of building an investment firm that can compound. Our guest on the show today is Greg Dean, the Founder and Lead of Investor at Toronto-based Langdon Equity Partners. Greg founded Langdon in 2021 after successful stints at Fidelity and Cambridge Global Asset Management. Langdon describes itself as an “active and engaged owner of world class smaller companies.” The firm has assembled concentrated portfolios of companies with enterprise values between $500 million and $5 billion that are cash generative and are run by long-term-oriented executives. In this conversation, we discuss: Why Greg wants the Langdon office to be more like a library than a train station; His definition of a compounder and the unique challenges of managing such companies within small cap strategies; How Langdon has tried to position itself differently from other small-cap-focused firms; The kinds of mistakes that prevent companies from realizing their full compounder potential; and The cultural elements that are most important when building a new investment firm. [3:12] O sea, puedo decirte “NERD”. Sistemas on line, soy bastante “NERD”… Y ahora estamos dedicados “full-time”… A ver… [8:38] ¡No! [9:15] ¡Claro!…. (risas)… y no…. [9:18] ¡Nada que ver! (risas) [9:20] Ehh… no, ¡ojala! (risas) [11:12] ¡¡¡Yo fui a verte varias veces!!! [14:27] (risas) Sí, si… yo no me acuerdo si iba primero o segundo… [15:40] (Risas)… Bueno, escuchen, ¿no? [19:04] Y después de muchos shows… Hoy no me gusta verme. Y no te diste cuenta. Los esperamos en el show! http://thecomedycast.com Greg Dean is someone very well-known in the comedy world and if you've ever look for a book on stand-up comedy then chances are you've come across his book on stand-up; Step by Step to Stand-up Comedy. We started off by talking a bit about Greg heritage, coming from British stock, one side being Scottish, who still have a castle, and the other English. We spoke about Greg growing up in rural California and joining the theatre as a young man before literally running away with the circus at the age of 21. Then we chatted about Greg going onto becoming a successful, touring stand-up comedian before he turned his hand to teaching the craft of stand-up. Greg reveals the basics of his classes, the three mechanics as he calls them; the target assumption, connector and reinterpretation. Greg also speaks about being a member of the Internation Society of Humour Studies, being the only member that isn't part of academia. He also talks about reading as much academia as possible while researching his book and his contributions to the society. We talk then about the importance of comedians learning to read the reactions of their audiences so they can know how far they can take jokes, we speak too about nothing being off limits and about offending people from time to time and that comedians just have to get used to it. We chat then about whether anything still surprises him in comedy anymore or has it seen it all already? We speak more in depth about his book Step by Step to Stand-up Comedy and how it was a real labour of love that took 10 years to write and the struggle to find a publisher. And Greg tells two absolutely hilarious stories about previous students of his that had me roaring, you might be offended by if you are you're probably listening to the wrong podcast.
